1920's Brass Spray Pump Restoration

- I wish I was born in the time when tools were well made, from good quality materials. I saw this spray pump & although being a simple tool, I could see the beauty lying beneath the tarnished brass. In today's throw away society, to manufacturer something like this spray pump would be prohibitive and pointless. This pump is manufactured by the Deming Company in Salem Ohio. It is their "Perfect Success" Bucket Spray Pump. Typically used for garden work but is also versatile to spray and clean any number of household tasks. An item from a very different time to now.
Anyway, follow along as I give this thing some loving! Thanks for watching! - Навчання та стиль
I'm so happy that channels like these have appeared, focused on restoration. This is preservation of the old, and it's very important. In several cases in my path from hobby to a marginal side job in machining and similar, many times i have drawn inspiration or have been helped by old books, old items, and old in general. There's a lot of things we've "forgotten" or laid to the side, and in some cases, for no good reason. So kudos to you, the Hand Tool Rescue channel, and any other channels that follow the vein. With UA-cam's issues, this kind of video content might, hopefully, attract good numbers.
My Dad worked at Deming's for 38 years. They shut down the Salem plant in the early 2000's. Damn shame. By the time he retired they one of the foremost pump manufacturers in the world. Great to see this piece of history restored. Thank you, Will.
Wow, I am 80 years old and that's the first time I have seen one of those. Great restoration indeed and it works. Ken
As someone from Ohio, I must say it’s nice to see a tool that was not only made in Ohio but also a part of my life. My grandfather still uses one to water his vegetables garden. Thank you for the memories and amazing job. You have shown me a way to restore his!!
+Mathew Young you're welcome! Thanks for watching :)
Please keep up these great videos I enjoy watching them.
+Mathew Young I will try to! Thanks
Mathew Young i use it the same wat, with rain water
Mathew Young I'm from Ohio too
Splendid job restoring the brass sprayer. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.
Really liked the perseverance on the brass bulb, another great video.
Love this channel. . . No talking, no music, just a beautiful restoration time lapse
Love the "Success" bulb! You should fill that pail with alcohol. Also, I suggest raising that drill press up or you are going to destroy your neck and back.
Hand Tool Rescue
Hi i love your channel two
Do you feel jealous of this channel being the exact same style of content you make?
To some extent sucess breeds sucess. Similar channels can build up each other's following as long as there's not so many that some get drowned out...
Polish that success bulb das right. That pump is useless but it's nice loioking
This felt eerily familiar. But using that shiny new worm clamp was a little lazy
Wow... What a thing of beauty! Thanks for restoring it to its former glory!!!
Great job they make brasso paste you can use on your polishing wheel a lot easier then by hand keep the videos coming keep the old stuff alive
The workbench is really coming along! I love the well used look! Well done bringing that sprayer back to life!
Will, you never cease to amaze me how you can bring the dead back to life. Although I would never have the patience to do what you do, I have the patience to watch your videos from beginning to end. Another GREAT video and rebuild!!! Keep up the great videos my friend. GOD BLESS!!!
Great job! I collect antique farm and garden tools and have a couple sprayers like this. You have inspired me to restore them . Thanks!!
Labour of love, for these vintage machines. Thats a well made quality product and you have done a good restoration.
Amazing work and very relaxing video! Thank you
Gorgeous!! Thank you for sharing.
Finally using 3-in-1! :) :) :) great vid mate.
Fantastic! I grew up in Salem, Ohio acrss the street from the Deming family. The historical society has a display of Deming's pumps. I do not recall the small pump like because they were known for the large gov. Contract pumps. You have restored it to museum quality. This Christmas when I am back in Salem I will need to visit that display again
Kevin Fehr I agree. Well done with particular care to the aesthetic as per the gold lettering. Nice!
I enjoyed this video more than your usual videos for some reason. Beautiful work!
I've seen almost all of your restoration videos, and it always surprises me just how many parts a given subject consists of.
Great work, and you have a beautiful garden!
when you started to paint the letters you've nailed me. awesome job man!!! bravo!
Beautiful work Will !
You, man, are creative in your work, and I admire your calmness with your fine work
Your restoration videos are awesome!
Outstanding! amazing job!
Very good Will, you're the best!
Crazy good. Like the setup clean but functional.
The level of fine detail is damn impressive. Nicely done.
Awesome stuff dude! I love the gold lettering I thought that was a nice touch.
That thing looks very cool!
Awesome restoration!!
That looks fantastic. Here's a handy tip i learned painting amplifiers in the Navy. "foamies" or the little foam ear plugs are fantastic for masking small holes before paint. Much easier to get out too!
Wow beautiful work!!
Will, nice job mate saving a well built tool. Something most companies today lack, If not made in the US or England chances are it stays on the shelf. That's not to say one doesn't have a lot of stuff that if it breaks or strips out... all is not lost. That's a keeper for sure....
They were about when I was growing up in 60's Queensland. WE called them stirrup pumps. My recollection was they were mainly used for watering back then. Greta video, thanks.
Nicely done!
Impressive that the old hose was salvageable, pity the clamps weren't, but it's a functional beauty now!
I like your videos you are good at restoring stuff and making them work and look new
Amazing work done. More interesting. Many many thanks.
grouse work mate she looks lovely after being cleaned up and of course restored to new condition and well even the pot plants would love this one for sure etc.
Great attention to detail.
Success in watering those flowers!
Wow very nice restore really enjoyed watching it
Beautiful restoration 😊
Real nice job on this!
amazing art piece!!
Great video!
Beautiful job.
Very nicely done! You need to get on Patreon by the way. As with HTR, happy to throw in a bit to see these beautiful tools restored.
I don't really know anything about Patreon to tell you the truth. Maybe will have to research one day. Thanks for watching Dan!
;)
awesome stuff!
you need to get your hands on 3m`s radial bristle Discs/brushes, i think it will up your game a lot!
good job as always
Wow, it's in great shape already. Awesome work. I think the nozzle originally had a stepped plug that it screws onto that inserts into the hose. That's what those threads are for.
Great success!!
Holy Crap!! Born and Raised!! My home town!!
Stunning. More of this please. New sub.
Awesome work
Nice work mate. I restore a lot of brass lamps and I’ll give you a tip. Paint any brass you want to restore with tomato ketchup ( not tomato sauce) , let it sit for 20-30 minutes and you will be amazed at result. Then just rinse off with water. Finish of with brasso.
Cheers
That was made in a town near me. So cool to see new life brought back to it. Good eye on a tool to save!!!
Watching you put your hands in solvent reminds me of when I used to clean parts in leaded gasoline with my hands back in the 50's. In the 60's, I worked with a really nice guy who loved to clean parts in methyl alcohol because it was such a fantastic cleaner. He turned a dark gray color and died. He had survived WW2 only to die from cleaning parts.
Love the colour of brass.
THANK YOU...for sharing. Very nice.
Great Job, Excellent, Man..
Top Work dude ... love the videos
That’s pretty crazy I actually live in Salem Ohio very nice restoration.
You're the man. Impressive.
Amazing!!!
well done man !
Liked the video and subscribed. Very informative!! i need to make one for my leather work.
!! A satisfação de mais um trabalho bem feito.
Лепота. Кругом природа, флора-фауна. Червячки всякие чирикают... Мечтаю о такой жизни...
Found one of those success bulbs in a field, nothing else with it. Always wondered what it was for.
A new way to drink beer!!! All done and would look great in a man cave /den /crib... whatever you wanna call it, top job mate! awesome videos, just found your channel, subbed without even watching any videos... Love the content, good to see others who appreciate old things. Cant spend enough time on this sort of thing myself :)
Great video! To cut hose off hose fittings I fasten the hose just under half way in a vise, cut the top of the hose lengthwise then refasten the vice all the way so that the fitting will pop out of the vice by breaking through the weakened cut area. For high pressure fittings I'll use a hacksaw to make a diagonal cut toward the nut through the collar but the extraction is the same.
Good job !
Realy nice work man, must be hard to find a project like this, it can’t be many of these around.
Incredible that the plastic hose was stil in one piece, it can’t have seen much sunlight. :)

Not going to lie, that made me chuckle
¡Qué bonito trabajo!
Great work! If you put the hose in warm/hot water, it will expand and become easier to remove or apply.
I wanted to cry when you polished the success bulb, looked like it had a lovely patina. I get why you did it though. Well done mate!
Never mind, rewatched and my eyes deceived me ;)
please do more,i love your videos

Well done....very nice!

Nice restore, but just a little tip, when removing or replacing rubber hose, soak the end in some hot water for a few minutes, it will soften up the rubber and make it easier to work will.
+steve gray thanks for the tip Steve!
no problem. also, if you have a compressor, get yourself a sandblaster attachment and some baking soda or very very fine grit, that will help a lot.
beautiful
С удовольствием смотрю ваши видео вы лучший
I have the same pump minus the mounting system and hose. Works good though. 👍🏻
I was surprised to see you didn’t use the original clamps, especially after saving that original old hose.
Oh cool! That is from Salem Ohio! Just south of me!
Awesome!
Good job. Keep it up.
BTW a before & after picture might be good.
parts on string make jingling sound.... cat shows up promptly to investigate lol.
Turned out great!
For removing rust, try citric acid. It's super cheap and can be bought from brewing/ wine making supply places in powdered form. It will leave a much brighter, clean surface than evaporust.
