I had this quote framed for my late father's workshop:
"When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, See! this our fathers did for us." JOHN RUSKIN

I commend you for your restoration skills and for preserving the beautifully crafted tools from the past. My late father was a mechanic and woodworker. He loved old tools and had reserved a corner of his workshop to display them; he called the area "Yesterday." He labeled the items with the name of the original owner when he knew it. I had a special wooden sign (Yesterday) made for his mini-museum and it hung in his shop for many years.

Next time you have to clean brass or copper, take a page from the old radiator shops. They used Muratic Acid (same acid used in swimming pools to maintain the proper pH) to clean the brass and copper radiators.
It will remove the corrosion without damaging the base metal.
    No sanding required to polish.

Tip you might not have come by: When you're punching on a wood block, use the end grain instead of the side. I've had FAR better luck that way, it cuts cleaner. Also, when you're painting a bright colour like red, throwing a white or silver base coat under it seems to make it "pop" way better for me, and be more brilliant. YMMV on that one, but I've had good luck with it.
This is a gorgeous restoration, what a gem!

FYI in the future, Brasso would take half the work in the polishing and the cork you put on the ends? They were originally oiled leather! And... if you want to keep it shiny, spray the tubes with clear lacquer. That's what I use and 5 years later, like new.

I doubt that pump looked as good as on it's born date. Nice work, love the red and bright brass

Looks great , I get in a hurry too about the red paint but hey I do like how you used the old tools for putting together the old pump, that was cool!

Very cool. I want one of those, now that I’ve seen an old brass one.

One trick I learned was to take small wooden parts, like the handle, and put it in a plastic bag with the finish and leave it over night to soak. Then wipe off the excess and your done. I use Boiled Linseed Oil.

That looks 1000 times better than my restore on our New Holland 451 sickle mower! Of course I was going for function not show room style lol. Always love these resto vids!

Excellent results. I love these small restoration jobs. Could you do a little more commentary as you are working telling us what you are doing, faults and repairs or even just what products you are using? Thanks for sharing.

The Good of the Land thanks for the reply, I will take the time to check out some of your other work. I have seen you with Mr. Cox before and he recommended this vid.
