I love how in this episode everyone was just so excited to talk to him. Like Alanah, Mike, and Austin were all jumping over each other to ask him questions (in a good way).

That's how you honestly know that someone is still insanely passionate about something. I've been part of my hobby for over half of my life at this point but the chance to talk to someone who is just starting out or is just getting interested in genuinely one of the most exciting things possible.

There's something highly entertaining about a full panel that is comprised of "I......HOW DID????" and there being a ton of great answers for each question. Happy for Abubakar on his delivery and success. Can't wait to pick this up myself.

Abubakar is such an inspiration. Growing up I dreamed of being in the voice over or video game industry in some capacity, but was told quite often I could never do it for x reason - he took that and ran with it, said “let me show you what I can do basically” when I sort of just.. cowered away from it and went with what society and the people around me expected. I have so much respect for him, being so open during the whole process, sharing his story and experiences. It’s moving to see. 💜

This is such a refreshing video. Abubakar is extremely open and clear about the process, sacrifices and more that went into the game. It’s rare to have such clarity. I was on the fence to be honest, but I want to support him and his team to make more games, there is clearly so much passion there. Good luck.

I think a lot of times giving advice doesn't really work. Like for many successful people in whatever field, if you look at their life you see that a series of events, circumstances, and personality traits led them to where they are now and others can't really replicate it. The "just start doing it" mentality came to them naturally as a result of their circumstances where they felt they could and should and did do it.
If you can afford to go just do it and afford to fail and learn over and over, that's great. But that's a privilege that many don't have and I think this should be talked about to when giving advice too.

    • @infecteddarkness442

Hello from months in the future!
Abubakar looks like decent fellow. And IMO he comes from a genuine place, especially with everything said on this podcast. Heck I didn't even know about all the controversy that went on up until googling the game after listening to this podcast.
I am a Dev myself (Technical Animator/Rigger), have been laid off twice in less than a span of a year - by two different companies who I was unlucky enough to be part of when they both were hit with the redundancy situation.
I want to bring up the SBI controversy as a question/opinion/guess.
I too would like to make a game - start my own small indie project. Looking for inspiration is what led me to finding this exact podcast episode the other day. I felt that the gist of the podcast was "Just do it and it can work out somehow, and not be afraid of failure" - yes, I love that sentiment of course. But - passion and drive can only take you so far. Without funding and backing - how can anyone afford to run a 12 person team? I've spoken to a number of acquaintances who have actually tried with smaller teams, and mostly did so unpaid. They even did rounds to join conventions and whatnot in hopes of finding investors, to no avail, hence their game never going off.
How was Abubakar able to get EA's interest in the first place? Was the pitch just that good that EA decided - sure we'll give u the funding needed to finish this game? So when I looked into the related controversy - I'm now wondering - was it his connections to key people involved in DEI consultancy that allowed him the opportunity that is not readily available to other people? I'm genuinely asking - apologies if I forgot some details mentioned in the podcast.

Alanah, do let Mr Salim know that I absolutely loved his performance as Bayek in AC Origins. Bayek imo is one of the most nuanced and tragic protagonists the series has had since Ezio. Hard to say without hard numbers, budgets etc. But it has a PS+ deal which is both money and will often lead to more sales of indies due to added mindshare where half the battle is getting the game noticed. Podcasts and things like this will help too. But I agree the initial figures don’t look too promising, but we really don’t know.

It was barely marketed. I remember seeing it at the game awards and hadn’t heard about it since. And the SBI stuff is utter nonsense. They’re a consulting company to increase diversity in games. To make stories feel more authentic. Black writers writing black stories, Asian writers writing Asian stories, Brazilian actors playing Brazilian characters. Things like that. Any “controversy” is manufactured by racists who are mad it isn’t white protagonist #1817478582738281847.
