That push and pull feel you were getting from Jimmy is actually a huge part of SP’s sound, especially in the 90s. It created this hypnotic feel that you sort of felt subconsciously. When they played with other drummers it didn’t quite sound or feel the same.
This was the first single of their massive 1995 hit album "Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness". That song was all over the place, as the next singles
I'll preface this by saying I love the Pumpkins. They were as good live in the 90s as they were a few years ago, which I was surprised by. The dynamic they use, softer verse, loud chorus is one often attributed to The Pixies, who used it before the Seattle sound came on the scene. Nirvana, Pumpkins, Radiohead have all used it to great effect, to name a few..xo
Great video and reaction. I had not seen this video version before. I love the song, it was used on British Television as intro for "Whale Wars" series. Thank you.
Great Reaction! yep this song was a huge hit for them back in the 90s (and had a ton of radio play) so had a feeling it would be one where you had a "wait a minute..." moment, but if you never knew the song title there's nothing inherently obvious linking it to the lyrics, so equally not surprising you didn't recognize the title. In addition to the chorus I think the opening with the line "The World is a Vampire..." gets used a bit, probably not to the extent of the chorus but pretty sure I've also heard it in multiple mediums.
very interesting, wonder where you coulda gone during the 2 years this song was all over the place peaking at no 1 in one country, maybe you were just really busy with your own thing or radio was broke, mind blowing shocked the intro got by ya, thanks for sharing
I was a bit late to Smashing Pumpkins, it was 1996 when I saw The Simpsons episode "Homerbalooza" where they played part of "Zero" that I instanlty got hooked. Also: BC: Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins. Homer: Homer Simpson, smiling politely. x)
It's in the top 50 of EVERYONE'S greatest hard rock songs of all time. Prolific era of songwriting for Mr. Corgan. And Jimmy... Even Billy said Jimmy is the best musician in the band.
lmao his face when D'arcy is first shown. this was the coolest sounding and coolest looking band maybe ever at their peak. if you liked this video and performance, and given your Metal proclivities, highly recommend the live performance by the Pumpkins of a song called XYU. you'll know which video when you search it, it's got hundreds of thousands of views. a song and performance w some similar vibes to this.
I see BWBW and Everlasting Gaze as sister songs. But much prefer TEG. Harder. Stronger. More dynamics. More frenzy. Billy's acapella breakdown. Frenzy outro, Just a shame no one agrees with me! 😶
So was this just an extra surprise video? Because on your instagram it said this was slated for release on the 18th not the 15th But hey its out early im not complaining
yes but it often wrecked songs live. Corgan seemed to like not performing his own hits correctly for paying audiences. this was different and not all that sped up, bc it's for TV. pumpkins always played beautifully for tv and close to album version/tempo.
im shocked that you not have heard this song before... :) (* ok you heard it... ) but hard to avoid it was back then... but i always found the song good enough to not get annoyed too much.
Love this song. One of my favorite from Mellon Collie (I rank Siamese Dream much higher). However, I dont know if I rank this higher than the Muse Invincible video, which was given a flat 8. First, I think the mix was much better for Muse's performance. Second, Matt Bellamy is a much better frontman and vocalist than Corgan. Billy even seems to not have full command of the mic, pulling away too far and or too fast at some points. Also, the rest of the band is not much in terms of stage presence. Even though Muse is only a 3 piece, and it started really somber and beautiful, they had more of a stage personality, in spite of neither performance moving much. These performances were at least on par, however, I would rank Muse's higher, not the Pumpkins. Also, the dynamic worked better on the Muse performance.

jimmy's drumming is just brilliant. nice video, cool bananas.

The pumpkins were always AMAZING with dynamics.

Love playing along to this one
This song brings back memories. It's great! (Like this reaction video!)
It was in many movies and trailers back in the day, even in a Call of Duty trailer a few months ago i remember
I recommend you do X.Y.U. by Smashing Pumpkins
100% the most frustration in any Smashing Pumpkins song.

I'm not that into these guys, but this slapped

The world is a vampire ❤ it was on trailer for dead space 2 video game 👍👍
In 1995 or whatever, this played on the radio EVERY OTHER SONG. I'd be like, "The Wor--" yep heard it 😂
Smashing Pumpkins The Everlasting Gaze live at abc is a good one
I see BWBW and Everlasting Gaze as sister songs. But much prefer TEG. Harder. Stronger. More dynamics. More frenzy. Billy's acapella breakdown. Frenzy outro, Just a shame no one agrees with me! 😶
yea i figured there was no way you haven't heard this one

Had to make a couple of last minute changes to the release dates. Like the filming announcement every month says...*Card Subject To Change.
Good
Pumpkins are notorious for speeding up their tempo. I think they prefer it. Embrace it really.

This is a great faceoff song
