I love seeing situations where something that everyone would write off has a niche application or an antimeta pick. I think it speaks to how metas evolve and why for instance things that are top tier don’t always stay top tier. I’m not saying Porygon is going to break the RBY meta wide open, but looking at some overall recent changes to a game I’ve been interested in since I was like six is absolutely fascinating. Best of luck in the Melee tournament! May your victories be swift and decisive and your losses non-existent!
Awesome video! Plague von Karma also did a video on this topic recently and I love the attention that some of the more interesting parts of RBY have been getting recently, including Porygon’s slight but legitimate OU niche. Love ya

7:50 correction - the chance of not getting paralyzed in 24 Body Slams is 0.019%, not 0.0019%. Also, just for fun, the chance of avoiding para in the same scenario but *accounting for* the 1/256 miss chance is 0,0199%, as opposed to 0,0192% when ignoring misses. It's honestly even more insignificant than what I expected; then again, idk what I was thinking lol
Would love to see a video that covers all of the weird jank RBY has, stuff like the 256 miss, weird paralysis interactions after stat changes and weird substitute interactions
@@cyanideytcuriousseadoggo is there any proof that gen 1 miss is even a glitch? because it seems like people just dont like it and therefore assume its a glitch. i dont think its that unreasonable for every move except swift [which is supposed to always hit] to have a small chance of missing, when you consider the fact that red and blue were not intended to have multiplayer and it was tacked on at the end of development. just seems like a [bad] design choice to me
I just realized why Porygon is so bad: it’s a joke about how the creators were ostracized for making a gameboy game in the age of 3D graphics, so in frustration the creators made Porygon (which in Japanese is pronounced identically to polygon) as a 3D Pokemon in a 2D game. And they hated polygonal games so “Porygons suck”

This is why I love hearing about competitive Pokemon even though I don't really play it myself. I just really love the random stuff like the Body Slam glitch and how it shook up the meta. I don't know what it is; I just find things like that fascinating. The fact that you've got this pretty well developed meta being played on emulators for years...and then one day someone's like "oh, shit...hold up. RBY is even more glitchy than we thought..." and that just changed so much. Made Porygon have a niche, destroyed Golem's viability...other things I'm not thinking of just now...I just love it. I also love things like the way Flareon got shafted by being a Pokemon with a massive attack stat but only special STAB.
I once used a Porygon in a doubles battle in FRLG. Using Conversion 2, it transformed into the Steel type and held off three other Pokemon by itself until it finally succumbed to the fourth. It has remained a low key favorite of mine ever since.
as much as i love the pokemon videos i just wanna say i 100% understand and respect that accidentally becoming a pokemon youtuber is not a great long term strategy for someone like you who wants to also make videos about things other than pokemon 💞 love yr work thanks for the great content, pokemon or otherwise. btw idk if you're already considering this but i think it'd be cool to see a recap of the melee tournament. highlights with commentary maybe?
Seeing the text on the thumbnail for this video sent it into a Schrodinger space for me: either it was dramatic, perhaps from the perspective of an onlooker witnessing an unassuming Porygon commit this terrifying feat, and whispering in disbelief, "...It's decent?", or incredibly comedic by undercutting every other element on the image with a flat, entirely meh, "It's decent." The lack of a shoutpole is, I think, a key part of what sold the two simultaneously. Excellent work; no notes. (And hey, good luck at Melee Thing!)
I came here for the fighting games but now I can't stop watching pokemon content pls send help In all seriousness, your vids are what got me into pokemon and I can't be more grateful for that. Also, your edits have significantly improved. Just astounding work, Yellow. Keep it up, champ!

As someone who's never gone back and played the original Gen 1 Pokémon games, I can't stress enough how surreal it is to hear the phrase "Gengar's damage output is much lower than Tauros," around the 9:22 mark of this video. Like damn, that really goes to illustrate just how far Tauros's fall from grace was; it went from being a stronger sweeper than Gengar to a complete nothing of a Pokémon that you'd barely ever choose for even casual playthroughs of the games from Gen 4 onwards. Let's hope it gets some love in Scarlet and Violet with an evolution/regional form like people have been speculating since that last trailer.
I found out about RBY Porygon a little while back because seeing it on the OU viability rankings blew my mind. It's amazing what a a bit of extra PP can do. Have fun at Fete, and good luck!
Your commentary on anything related to RBY tiers are all amazing, well put and concise. I love it! As a fellow trainer that played a lot the meta, I can say for sure that everything you say is relevant! Thanks for that! :D Edit: About what you said that novices must NOT use Porygon: that's because they need to understand what every single big threat in OU does, how to counter them and how to build a team. After that, they need to learn as much as they can about the meta. Only then, they can adventure with Lapras, Golem, Porygon, Persian, Victreebel.
coming back to this I remember when I used to play rby ou in 2022 I went up against a porygon with an amnesia snorlax once it just immediately switched out it's amazing haha
Body slam paralysis immunity is another thing I love about gen 1, imagine how much easier scald would be to deal with if water types were immune to its burn, or poison types were immune to dire claw sleep
Its a pretty cool mechanic regardless if it was unintentional. I wish they kept this being a thing it just gives more benefits to being specific types.

Can we just talk about how perfect Big Yellow is?

I'm sorry.
“Offensive presents.”
A pun after my own heart. XU
What a nice, quick analysis! I’ve been following your content for a while now, and it’s wonderful to see how much you’ve grown.
In conclusion: Every Porygon gangsta until the Snorlax forgets where its car keys are.
As per usual, the thumbnail and Pokémon nicknames are top tier. Especially Jynx being '"Stop"
Love ya
Very nice! Maybe "Staraptor: Constantly Borderline", or "Tyranitar: Always OU"?
i think ttar dropped to uu in swsh at some point (crown tundra?), but it did get back in ou
Staraptor is OU isn BDSP, for what it's worth
@@v1rgilio
Ttar had one of the biggest glow ups ever in Gen 8
went from a mon that temporarily dropped to UU, to one of the scariest breakers in the entire OU meta.
What a 180
Albiet it was always good, but the general opinion on Tyranitar changed so drastically against it, and then in favor of it it's crazy.
the fall and continued fall of dewgong
@Neon that is true, but my point is that ttar did drop to uu at some point
I absolutely love all the visual edits and gags in this video, especially the "offensive presence" one, that one was amazing. Have fun at your melee tournament!
You mentioned the 3HKO body slam and I was intrigued. But the instant you said normal type with recover I feel like my third eye opened
Understood. Will take Porygon on my first-ever gsc team in order to counter Snorlax. Honestly, how did no one think of this sooner?
Because porygon-2 just does it’s job better
I've heard about Porygon in OU before, but never knew why. That's pretty neat, and seems like a prime example of the flaws of a concrete and/or numerical tier list system
What's the flaw?
@@Tvboy777 kinda hard to put into words, but basically the fact that it's hard to really account for niches and matchups/counterpicks in tierlists. Porygon itself really isn't a "powerful" Pokemon like a glance at the viability rankings might imply, but its ability to counter Snorlax still lets it get in the viability rankings. It's like how with Golem was (or still is, I can't remember) prominent in OU, but fell out of favor to the point of dropping to UU. It didn't have any real niche in UU, and even got dropped to NU
I'm not really good at explaining shit, so I hope I made at least some sense
good luck at fete bb i believe in you
Porygon is a great example of how type and move pool are just as impactful as stats.
Big yellow be like
Just pick a top tier
I might be in the minority but man I actually watch both your fighting game videos and your Pokemon videos as I have a passion for both. Whatever video you make I'm always excited to watch. Whether it be dissecting a street fighter third strike character or talking about the most op Pokemon type I'm always looking forward to watching them.
I have no clue about anything “competitive Pokémon” but I’m happy to be here to see it
7:50 correction - the chance of not getting paralyzed in 24 Body Slams is 0.019%, not 0.0019%.
Also, just for fun, the chance of avoiding para in the same scenario but *accounting for* the 1/256 miss chance is 0,0199%, as opposed to 0,0192% when ignoring misses. It's honestly even more insignificant than what I expected; then again, idk what I was thinking lol
Ty for the clarification my math is crazy bad lmao
Pretty cringe tbh man
Would love to see a video that covers all of the weird jank RBY has, stuff like the 256 miss, weird paralysis interactions after stat changes and weird substitute interactions
And the fact that showdown patched Psy wave and counter in gen 1 to fix them to stop desyncs.
That'd take a series, not a video.
The one in 1/256 glitch is due to how the gen 1 Gb games check accuracy every move has 1/256 less accuracy than it is supposed to.
@@cyanideytcuriousseadoggo is there any proof that gen 1 miss is even a glitch? because it seems like people just dont like it and therefore assume its a glitch. i dont think its that unreasonable for every move except swift [which is supposed to always hit] to have a small chance of missing, when you consider the fact that red and blue were not intended to have multiplayer and it was tacked on at the end of development. just seems like a [bad] design choice to me
Fun fact: It is literally Impossible to beat Gen 1 without encountering any glitches.
Never played RBY competitive in my life but you convinced me to start with Porygon as a staple on my team
Let’s get this bread
I love your little jokes with these Pokemon please keep doing them they're amazing
That's honestly insanely cool if that's what they were going for
@@BigYellowSilly ua-cam.com/video/zOkpD6uqsxI/v-deo.html It’s in this video!
I love your videos so much! fantastic information, expertly timed humor, and pretty nails really make for an excellent comfort content to gravitate towards. Good luck at the tournament!
5:11 hands down the funniest bit
'pretty quick video'
15 minutes
Love this guy lmao
RBY Competitive has been I could just listen to for hours recently, please keep it up if want to its really enjoyable.
Imagine seeing Golem and Porygon next to each other on the viability rankings a decade ago.
This honestly might be one of favourite channels right now, idk if it’s the format or the content itself but I love it, it’s just so addicting man. Love pokemon so it’s so fun learning obscure stuff about these older metagames that I wouldn’t ever know otherwise. Keep it up ✨
They are OU viable because they are funny and everyone loves them and doesn't want to hurt them.
You are one of my new favorite youtubers, love the video essay format to eat my nuggies to. BIG FAN!
I once used a Porygon in a doubles battle in FRLG. Using Conversion 2, it transformed into the Steel type and held off three other Pokemon by itself until it finally succumbed to the fourth. It has remained a low key favorite of mine ever since.
Gotta be honest, I've never thought that I'd like this channel this much, kerp up the good work!
Your passion for RBY is great. As someone who never cared for it, your videos actually made me like it! Also, your hair is always a serve, cute.
as much as i love the pokemon videos i just wanna say i 100% understand and respect that accidentally becoming a pokemon youtuber is not a great long term strategy for someone like you who wants to also make videos about things other than pokemon 💞 love yr work thanks for the great content, pokemon or otherwise. btw idk if you're already considering this but i think it'd be cool to see a recap of the melee tournament. highlights with commentary maybe?
Seeing the text on the thumbnail for this video sent it into a Schrodinger space for me: either it was dramatic, perhaps from the perspective of an onlooker witnessing an unassuming Porygon commit this terrifying feat, and whispering in disbelief, "...It's decent?", or incredibly comedic by undercutting every other element on the image with a flat, entirely meh, "It's decent." The lack of a shoutpole is, I think, a key part of what sold the two simultaneously.
Excellent work; no notes.
(And hey, good luck at Melee Thing!)
I used Porygon in a Leaf Green playthrough recently and it wasn't bad thanks to its good special movepool, not exactly Gen 1 but you know
I came here for the fighting games but now I can't stop watching pokemon content pls send help
In all seriousness, your vids are what got me into pokemon and I can't be more grateful for that. Also, your edits have significantly improved. Just astounding work, Yellow. Keep it up, champ!
I can really see a improvment in the comedy and editing-y stuff! Great video and good luck with fete!
You're legitimately my sleepy sounds btw, every night, just falling asleep to the same explanations about RBY OU
I have a newfound respect for this weird duck, the fact you're rolling the dice on the opponent's Snorlax set can only be a positive for me because I have a serious gambling problem. All the best for Fête 2!
I haven't played pokemon competitively consistently since gen 4, but your videos on the different metas are genuinely some of my favorite pokemon content lmao. Thanks for the hard work!
I call my Dragonite "Chance the Wrapper"
Big Yellow talking about my favorite mon?? I thought the day would never come, and expected a small mention on RBY OU/UU talks, but you came in with the redemption arc
Ok, these videos finally got me to try Showdown and now I'm addicted to Gen 1 Random battles. Still too nervous to try OU but I'm having a blast.
These vids NEED more recognition, I can see the effort you put in every one
Your commentary on anything related to RBY tiers are all amazing, well put and concise. I love it! As a fellow trainer that played a lot the meta, I can say for sure that everything you say is relevant! Thanks for that! :D
Edit: About what you said that novices must NOT use Porygon: that's because they need to understand what every single big threat in OU does, how to counter them and how to build a team. After that, they need to learn as much as they can about the meta. Only then, they can adventure with Lapras, Golem, Porygon, Persian, Victreebel.
Nails looking fabulous as always. Similarly "as always", thanks for the video
coming back to this I remember when I used to play rby ou in 2022 I went up against a porygon with an amnesia snorlax once it just immediately switched out it's amazing haha
Porygon is unbelievably based
Watching these videos about comp Pokémon actually got me into gen one comp, and it’s a lot of fun! Thanks!
Body slam paralysis immunity is another thing I love about gen 1, imagine how much easier scald would be to deal with if water types were immune to its burn, or poison types were immune to dire claw sleep
Its a pretty cool mechanic regardless if it was unintentional.
I wish they kept this being a thing it just gives more benefits to being specific types.
omg, love love love watching these and learning abt competitive rby even tho i dont play, good luck at the melee tournament!!!!!
Love the pokemon stuff, I don't follow fighting games and this is how I found your channel!
5:10 I can't stop rewatching this bit, go little Porygon, stall the fuck outta that Snorlax.
Oh yeah? If Porygon is so good, why isn't there a Porygon 2?
coolest porygon thumbnail ever
This has become my favorite YT channel that talks about competitive PKMN. Your content is easy to understand, the editing is very good and the quick jokes on screen make it even better
Man I love these videos so much they’re so informative and the editing is great every time
idk where you suddenly came for but for the past 2 months ive been binging your vids, you got me back into competitive pokemon (and also into smash again) really appreciate it, have been relapsing into my depression and new intrests really help me get my mind out of things. the way you make your videos keep me watching, the funny thumbnails makes me laugh, and your way of talking about it is so great. keep it going man, love it!
Good Luck BigYellow! I believe in you! :D Have Fun
"I need to make this video short so I can grind melee"
THAT'S RIGHT CHAMP
The visual humor in these videos never fails to make me laugh
Go Pack Go
The thumbnail is absolutely goated
I also wouldn't mind at all if you made more Pokemon content! I know fighting games are your main thing but I really love the RBY competitive stuff especially. All Pokémon content is awesome but particularly gen 1 interests me a ton. Ive played the games a bunch of times as a kid and even once I got back into the game as a young adult. The gen 3 remakes are my preferred way to play, but ive never played competitive gen 1 and you have me interested enough to explore it.
Thanks for the content as always. Looking forward to more obscure early gen competitive facts in the future
It wasn't until I saw the damage calc where it made sense to me but the whole video is still really well made. Good luck on your major and I'll be looking for your sets on UA-cam
My day gets brighter every time I see you posted a new video
Ngl, your Pokemon vids got me completely hooked to competitive due to your analysis and fun suggestions.
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
porygon is one of my fave gen 1 pokemon and its so nice to know it has a niche in the first games
Another Big Yellow Pokemon video, another S-Tier thumbnail. You love to see it
I love these pokemon videos, they're fascinating and very well presented. Also your nail polish looks really great in this video, I love the colour.
Wow! This is the first video that I see from you and it's great! Thanks, this is very interesting! It's cool finding more videos like this one! New sub :D (Also your nails are really pretty)
The "Nothing personnel kid" Porygon in the thumbnail, neckbeard Snorlax. I am thoroughly tickled pink.
