  • The Nevada Northern Railway is one of the best preserved historic shortline railroads in the United States. After Kennecott Copper abandoned the railroad in 1983, the railroad was donated to the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation in 1986, and excursions started running in 1987 behind the railroad's beautiful 1910 Baldwin 4-6-0, 40, one of few operating examples of Baker valve gear.
The 40 is seen getting ready for the day and taking the train over to the East Ely Depot for its departures the Ruth. The train is then followed to Ruth amidst landscapes of vast untouched desert before running around the wye and returning to East Ely.
This VHS recording was made by Fred Klyver, and is now part of the collection of Rob Klyver.
Enjoy this look at steam running in the west looking very much the way it was!
