  • The Southern Pacific's striking red and orange Daylight series of trains made their debut on March 21, 1937, on the run over the Coast Line between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The success of these trains spawned more equipment in Daylight colors on SP's passenger trains on its most popular routes.
In addition to the Coast Daylight, the companion San Joaquin Daylight to Los Angeles from Oakland over the Valley Route was put into service on July 4, 1941. These trains were the least glamorous of the Daylight series, and toward the end of the steam era, almost always ran with mixed equipment. This circumstance however, made the these trains the last steam powered named passenger trains on the Southern Pacific, lasting until the fall of 1956.
This video takes you on a journey from Los Angeles to the Bay Area and return aboard the Coast and San Joaquin Daylights. Along the way, operations for both trains are observed as connections are made and helper districts and power swaps are navigated. A maritime journey is also had as we cross San Francisco Bay aboard one of Southern Pacific's transbay ferries.
These 8mm and 16mm films come from the movie cameras of 9 different railfans, and we are indebted to them all for preserving these images of railroading's Golden Age for future generations!

High speed rail in its day and long before the interstate highway act, what a beautiful and awesome way to travel across California. A comprehensive and much appreciated look into a unique time in history

All of it is from GS engines as well. The clip from the MT is from a GS-1. Most of the deep Hancock audio is from GS-4 4455

Amazing video. Really gives you a sense of SP operations in the 50s on the daylight routes. Especially well done with the audio dubbing, can't imagine that was easy.

When I was a kid my aunts took us to San Francisco in this train. It may have been in 1959 or a little later. Maybe we had an Alco. This was an 8 or more hour trip and I didn't like it. From Santa Clara to San Mateo just took forever. But, I wasn't a train enthusiast then. I heard Pacific Fruit Express had priority and we had to wait on a siding as it passed us.

The last two cars on the Coast Daylight were extra-fare parlor cars, which remained all the way to Amtrak due to the large number of wealthy SP stockholders in the Bay Area (which is why the parlor-car equipped Del Monte to Monterey made it to Amtrak as well). The first car had a stateroom, said to be used by movie stars who demanded privacy.

Yes. Amtrak's four-times a week Daylight ended service when the Coast Starlight to Seattle went daily. I took a photo of the last Daylight down near Watsonville.

Nearly all SP steam locomotives were equipped with horns, and generally used them over the whistles.

Just in case if anyone doesn’t know (or remember why the horns were used) the sounds travelled farther and are also used whenever it gets foggy on the coast.

But not the original. I’m not sure what whistle it was, but I think it was similar to the one she currently has right now. I’m not referring to the SP 6 chime used in the 1980s or the ATSF 6 chime from the late 1970s either.

Like New Haven's McGinnis scheme and Atlantic Coast Line's purple, SPs Daylight scheme was suggested by an executive's wife. It was a perfect complement to California's golden grass hills.
