Nevada Northern 81: The Robinson Canyon Express

- The Nevada Northern Railway, located in Ely, Nevada, is one of the most authentic railroads preserved in the United States. From East Ely Yard with all of the original structures to its vast collection of the original rolling stock and locomotives, the railroad truly is a one-of-a-kind in American railroading.
After decades of hauling copper ore, freight, and passengers, the railroad now survives as a tourist railroad and museum, providing visitors with a unique experience for how railroads operated throughout the 20th century.
Today, the Nevada Northern Railroad operates a variety of passenger excursions with their historic steam and diesel locomotives over various parts of the line. The iconic steam-powered excursion from Ely to Keystone through Robinson Canyon continues to be one of the railroad's most popular trip since the line re-opened as a tourist railroad in 1987.
Throughout all of 2023, recently-restored 2-8-0 number 81 has been the only operational steam locomotive on the railroad as work continues on both locomotive 40's 1472 and the major running gear overhaul on locomotive 93. For the 2023 excursion season, the railroad purchased a brand-new Boston & Maine 6 Chime whistle built by the Osborne Whistle Works serving as a new and permanent whistle for 81 which sounds fantastic on the hefty Consolidation.
This video takes a look into the daily operations on the Nevada Northern Railway. From preparing locomotive 81 in the morning, to covering the line with a variety of locations and angles, this immersive video gives viewers a taste of this remarkable American treasure. So sit back, relax, and enjoy Nevada Northern 81 on The Robinson Canyon Express.
A very special goes out to the volunteers, employees, and management of the Nevada Northern Railway for making this video possible.
This video was filmed on Friday, June 23, Saturday, June 24, Sunday, June 25, and Monday, June 26, 2023.

I am glad seeing Nevada Northern 81 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1917) back in April 16th 2023. Where I did the cab ride.
Maybe upload something then you can talk
Mega Cooles Video. 👍 Dankeschön dafür. Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland 👋 Gruß Roland 👋 😊
Great video, Mark! Easily one of the best videos of the Nevada Northern I've seen! I have a feeling this video is trying to convince me to buy a plane ticket to Nevada 😆
Thank you, Ben! I cannot recommend enough visiting, it’s awesome.
Great catches and awesome video
Thank you!
Cool how the caboose kept changing positions. That's a trip.
Haha, good eye. The way the railroad is set up only allows the full train to be turned on the wye at Keystone. Because of this, every other trip will have the coaches (or caboose) behind the tender.

This is easily your best work yet and easily the best coverage of this railroad! Very well done!
Thank you very much, Joe! Glad you enjoyed!
The amount of progress you’ve made over the years is immense man. I remember back in the day when you were making vids of ur model railroad, the Trainz vids, and all the early stuff. Now you’re making some super high quality stuff, and my god does it look amazing. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you very much for such a nice and thoughtful comment! I really appreciate it! While I often would rather not look back to the early days, I am glad you have enjoyed seeing what I consider to be an improvement in videos. Thanks again, and I am glad you enjoy my videos!

Actually got to see this steam engine
Mark,
This is a video you should be proud of. It is an excellent documentation of a day on the Nevada Northern that showcases not just the locomotive itself, but people who make it happen as well as the scenery the railroad runs through. It felt like I was along for the ride!
Joe,
Thank you very much for such kind words! That was exactly my goal with this film. Unfortunately, many railfans and photographers often overlook or even forget about this remarkable railroad. By providing them a look into what a day on the Nevada Northern is like, I hopefully can captivate others to the allure of the railroad, ultimately leading to many considering the Nevada Northern as one of the premiere railroads in the country. I am glad you enjoyed!
Such beautiful cinematography! And that whistle sounds amazing I may be biased though because most of my favorite engines have a similar sound
Thank you! I also really like the whistle.
Outstanding video. A great view of the NN from early morning preparations through the daily operation. Loved not having narration!
Thank you very much, Roger! That was exactly my goal with this film. I wanted to immerse the viewers in what a day on the Nevada Northern is like. And I am glad you liked not having narration! I think the scenes tell the story better than any narration would. Thanks for watching!

You are so welcome! 😊
Love the Firebox.
Just like an old fashioned pizza oven, but way bigger and way hotter.
@@T128Productions and did you love the Santa Fe 6 chime.
Sounds like 3751 and 2926
It sounds more like Milwaukee Road #261
@@SuperFoxyRailwayProduction6702yes that too
This trip goes up to copper flats, right? or do they not go there anymore? I'm just curious
Currently, excursions only go as far as the wye at Keystone.
what camera and mic did you use?
This was filmed with the Canon EOS R and 24-105 F4L lens and the Zoom H8 mic
Are more videos coming soon?
I upload videos as they are completed.
Is that bituminous or anthracite coal?
The Nevada Northern uses bituminous coal.
My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚝🚞🛤🚊🚋🚂 they're one of his favorite things in the whole world 🌎. He finds the Nevada Northern Railway museum very interesting and hopes the entire line to McGill is restored and the line into the mines and 4-6-0 #40 overhaul is finished real soon.
Well then I hope he enjoys this video!
@@MPT_Productions He certainly does and says thank you for filming and uploading it. John 3:16 🙏
