Third time's a charm? LEGO Technic 42140 Transformation Vehicle building review

- This is the detailed building review of the LEGO Technic 42140 App-Controlled Transformation Vehicle set. It has one Technic hub and two Large Powered Up motors, and it is controlled by the Control+ app.
This is the 3rd Control+ set in this price category and the 3rd in line of the RC tracked vehicles, let's see in details how it performs!

For the new gears it's also about the shape of the teeth being optimised for ideal contact while bevel ones may not do it that perfectly because they need to handle side connections.
My favorite thing about this set is that you can detach the body under 10 seconds as it holds on 4 pins only. And then place other bodywork on top of the tracks or just play witgout body at all.
Do you (or anyone else reading this comment) have a link to any sort of example of this being done? I just acquired this set and fully intend to keep the tracks and drivetrain/motor intact, while redoing one side of it.
Thanks for the shoutout, appreciated!
The "screwed" hub LOL. Great review and definitely changed my mind about picking this up compared to the previous version that I avoided. :)
Great review! Love this style. Quick general focus on new parts, similar sets…
Great review, very informative. One additional advantage of these tracked vehicles is that, with their smaller turning radius, they are more fun in smaller spaces, like apartments.
I bought my 42095 Stunt Racer a few months ago, and it also came with the matte black tracks, so looks like they changed that not long ago, but not in this set. Great video :)
I recently bought a flip tank (42140) and I wanted to learn Powered Up programming. I could not find much documentation or examples from Lego.
But then I found your "LEGO Powered Up simple code block guide" on your racingbrick website. Thank you !!!
I have created my own tank control with 5 buttons. Forward, Reverse, Left, Right and Stop. For example, Forward sets motor A to -30 and motor B to 30 using the TachoMotorSpeed blocks. The tacho feature keeps the tank running straight. Wonderful. Of course, Stop sets both motors to 0.
This is much easier than the control with 2 sliders that Lego provides in the CONTROL+ app. I found this almost impossible to control the tank properly. Just going straight was difficult.
I also added a turbo button which sets the speed to 60 (fast enough :-)
Your guide has so many examples that I am already thinking of improved versions of this simple controller, and many interesting experiments to come.
"Tanks" again. Cheers from Canada :-)
Greetings. Thank you for your comment re: programming the Powered Up - how are you considering the flip tank these days?
I love those RC sets!
I really loved it, it'll be on my wishlist for sure 🤗😍
Thanks for the amazing review.
Again an interesting review with comments that always serve us. Thanks.
Based on just the track shape alone, I would love to see some custom LEGO WW1 British Mark V tank builds.
Exactly what I was thinking. Put a video up if you do it.
or a Goliath Tracked Mine. it looks like an almost identical suspension.
Is so similar in orange mod with Mark tanks in world war 1
Hi Balázs, as always a great presentation of this nice set. You provide us with construction changes which nobody else discovered. I do not like the screws at the hub. Maybe two scres will be enough to keep the cover closed.
The new gears will help soooo much with perfect tension on chained build!! Hopefully they come in adult colours
Adult colors 💀
I’ve waited for so long! Thanks for finally uploading 😍
I really like this set so far and I definitly want to get my hands on it :D
It gives me strong Spybotics vibes from 2002 and reminds me on my first Spybot, 3807 Snaptrax S45, and brings my closer to MOC the full Spybotics series for Control+.
I’m really excited about this one
Great revuew again!. Now im very curious to see defender with the new gears
Thank you for your revirew, Balazs! :) Light Bluish Gray Technic, Shock Absorber 6.5L - Soft Spring has a new spring but I see your sets is with the old one. My 42140 came with the new spring.
Thanks for the video Balázs! Excelllent job! Again! Your videos always helps me to make a decission that I need a set or not :)
I knew the new tracks looked different! I recently ordered some new tracks from bricklink and they already had the new matt black surface
Interesting features.
Your humour's the best, bro👍🏼...'screwed hub' 😆...and those new pieces will always be called 'toilet paper rolls' too 😋, loved your review, bro 🙏🏼🤗...let's see what the other moc builders have planned for this set too now 👍🏼☺️
I’m going to buy this when I finish middle school and maybe turn it into a ripsaw
I'll add the transformation vehicle will work just fine if you use an old hub (without screws). So if there's any hardware difference, the app isn't checking for it.
Cool video. I like this set.
I think LEGO just changed another material used for some parts.
Half year ago I've got the LEGO 42100 set (the Liebherr) for my 18'th birthday. For some reason there was a 1x2 transparent brick in my track pieces bag, that was counted as a track piece, so I had to order a replacement track part and it also arrived as this new matte plastic, but in gray colour.
Very cool and nice
Legos im a big fan
I owned a RC vehicle as a kid I think called Fast Trax. Same idea: slam it into any obstacle and it would bounce off or flip over. Of course I drive it off our roof.
Just finished the set. Cool looking. I thought the manual was hard to follow and found myself looking forward to see where parts fit. Wish it did not have a bunch of stickers. Can not figure out how to turn off the truck on the app. It takes 6 AA batteries.
I trued it outside its works on everything!
Damn dude, you did a better job opening the box then I did.
than neon yellow is INSANELY bright, thats wild.
Cool
You should add buggy motors and buwizz to this model so it can flip by accelerating
That are very cool
Awsome vide
hey racingbrick, i really enjoy your videos! btw im early
I want to get it and I'm getting it
it would be really fun have a score as a daily driver and a weekend category.
Thanks
Don't care much for treaded Technic vehicles, but Lego I think got it right with this one. May not be as fast as the previous two, but the flip function is fantastic, fun, and each body aesthetic different enough to make both interesting. Still pretty expensive at 180 Canadian, but love to try it on some snowy terrain as there's no shortage of it here.
just put rubber on the 42065 or the 43095s B model and you have way better models with a physical remote...
I really like this set and the C+ is cool but I'm making only manual models yet, I will buy 42139 Quadbike maybe. I don't like screwed HUB, it's weird for me
I’m very tempted to get this to mod but I just bought the zetros. 2 Lego sets in a month is a bit excessive for me.
Would it be possible to use a non-app based Remote Controller? Like you show for 42139 using Pybricks? What pieces should I get? I'm completely new to this, so I'd appreciate detailed instructions :) Also, would the code require changes? Or perhaps it's been done already but I haven't found it?
i wasn't going to buy it because of that neon yellow but it actually looks and works really good.
8:08 Glad I’m only getting this set for the 2 motor’s and battery box. And the parts lol
Does the app interface make any sound effects? I really want to hear them. 9:44
i will love a fan made model b juste the orange side
The new battery box is even more annoying since the rechargeable battery (# 45612) doesn't seem able to recharge unless the cover is removed. Maybe there will be another way to recharge it??
Great review, as always! I can't help but notice that your build performs a lot slower than the one in Sariel's review. Is there any kind of issue with the motors/power?
I checked his video and don't really see a speed difference. He has many closeup shots where the vehicle seems to be quicker, but if you see the speed in the room or outdoors it is pretty much the same
@@RacingBrick Ohh! Yeah, seems true. Sariel almost sold me one with his action shots :P
i think you should call it highlighter yellow instead of neon yellow. great review as always, awesome work RB
The name is neon yellow on Bricklink, so I used that one
I've long wanted arctic exploration vehicle.
How hard would it be to have it remote controller? not stupid app ?
I just built this set and for the wing I just moved it a bit and now wont scratch.
42096 had stickers on both sides of a panel.
As an easter gift for my son
Is there enough ground clearance to self-balance on its front or back side? In other words, should we buy one and make an example project? :D
Sure! ;)
Do the regulations say "use 4 screws" Wasn't it easier and more practical to use the same undetachable nails in closed position on one side and 1 screw on the other side...?
I just buyed it
I made the exact same wire routing mistake lol.
The new gears would be much more ideal than the beveled versions for gearbox construction
Numero uno
@ RacingBrick when do you think you are going to build some LEGO Creator 3 in 1 sets? Because the ones I really want you to build the 31126 Supersonic-jet and the 31127 Street Racer.
Don't know, currently i'm pretty busy with moving to our new house
I like the flipping design but I don't know about the 'find the fuel cell' minigame. Like changing and recharging all the batteries aren't painful enough already...................
I have it its amazing 9:30 I didn’t know what is this for now i know
Great review, Can we control the speed ( fast or slow ) ?
sure, you control the speed and the direction with the sliders
Let's goooooooooo
hey! nice vid
i wonder if the control hub thing would work with a rechargable battery like li-po's? maybe something smaller?
btw are you russian? just wondering as im getting russian man vibes
You can buy rechargeable AAs, like these - ua-cam.com/video/5dybdmCFTiA/v-deo.html
If you look closely at the background of the back of the box, you can see penguins in the background. Which means it is an Antarctic vehicle, not Arctic. 1:09
Tourist penguins? 🤔
@@RacingBrick I think the orange side is the Antarctic transporter. Although I like to call it the Antarctic explorer.
Nice video! A quick question not related to this lego: where could I purchase the exhibition cabinet like the one behind you? If it's a DIY, is there an instruction link you could share? Thanks!
It's a Billy cabinet from IKEA
@@RacingBrick Goin with the high-tech solutions!
im too old for lego now lol.. i was a kid when the green one came out
Off topic question. Where I can find a help with building an app in powered up application?
You can search for "powered up" on my channel as I have lots of videos about it, and you can also check the Powered Up section of racingbrick.com
I have an idea-
Has anyone made a mod of this where it’s a British Mark V tank? I keep seeing the treads and think that someone else must’ve thought the same
You mentioned that we could buy much better RC toys for this price. Do you have any suggestions? I haven't really delved much into what's out there for RC stuff at that price point.
I'm not that into RC but I have a few WPL RC cars that are quite fun to play with and you can get them under $100
do a appcontrolled dattle
What about forklifts or tractors? Are they 123th time a charm?
Has anyone tried to build this using power functions instead of control plus?
I just bought it at £73 from amazon, i hope its worth it :)
Noice I'm 6th nice set
"Yes the screwed hub!! I mean the misteryous box with screws"
'Racingbrick'
The one I built.. well does not want to connect to the app. Frustrating right out of the box. It went into a system update and nothing.
after i use the app, how can i turn the vehicle off? do i just leave it alone and it turns off by itself?
You need to quit the app, the hub disconnects and then turns off. Alternatively you can long press the green button on the hub (~7s), and then it starts to blink and then turns off.
Man, I really miss power functions :(
Where Is the truck White big big Wing???
👇People with the OG one
Can you do a battle between the 42124, 42140 and 42109
Ok
Can I use a physical Lego controller to control it?
You can use the Powered Up controller but you need to create your own code for it in the app
What is that set behind the microphone, just above the ATV?
42077 Rally Car from 2018
Thanks
reverse the gears engine - transmission for must speed.
I recieved mine a week ago. I'm not happy with the torque power on the motors. I wish lego came out with a adult power functions that you have to sign a waver for. Knowing lego they would make these extreme motors the color pink. Fine... I'll sharpie over it.
LEGO is still a toy company, despite all the 18+ sets :) If you want more power, there are companies selling those products, like BuWizz
Am I the only one whose set got "loose" after a couple of months standing on a tablet? What I mean is that the suspension now barely holds the weight of the vehicle making it drop as soon is it gets a sudden acceleration. In addition to rendering it in a kind of wheelie position and closing the spoiler close when on the blue side, the major problem is that it can't flip anymore since when in down position, the front of the car is longer than the tracks preventing it from climbing on the wall.
Just picked this up for only £89.99 in Smyths toy shop in the U.K. much better price!
Can you show us the 2nd control+ set of 2022?
Suuure, as soon as it will be released, as at this point I have no idea what it will be :)
@@RacingBrick Ever heard about 42146? :)
@@catzzzz1450 I heard many rumors, they even have a tendency to contradict to each other, or they change on the fly. I'll wait for the official information
i like this build, like if you cut off a tanks entire head :)
so theey wernt those RC flipping cars where they purposely add a wheel at the back to act as the shock absorbers and rubber band for this set to cut costs
9:01 nobody :
perfectionists : noooooo
(one rubber go away)
Can it flip sideways?
If you grab one of the tracks and flip it over...
What os the wehicle showed at min 5:15?
The Technic Land Rover Defender
the new gears is unsupported on my gearing tool
These are obviously same gear ratios like older one
I mean the gearing calculator tool.
11:57 Actually Unbrickme’s review of this set shows much, much better outdoor action than Sariel
Sorry for not evaluating every other review on UA-cam to offer the best experience...
