So happy to see a review from you. Take care of your self and get well soon. That fart sound is just ridiculous BUT those bi directional beams are stunning. I can see a million uses for them esp in building big trusses and so on.
The car is built with a positive caster angle on the front tires, when going in reverse it's negative, the wheels shaking is not due to the controller but due to the lack of control of a negative caster angle, the wheels are always trying to go back to a positive angle.
I actually got this set early from a toy shop yesterday and I gotta say I love it! I don't have the beta app or anything so I actually created my own custom control interface! I found that the servo calibration block itself isn't perfect at all so I created buttons that would fine tune the servo to have a deafult more to the left or more to the right, in increments of 10. Your review of this set is epic and I gotta say I love the fart sound effect!
Thank you for posting this. I like the building aspect but seeing it actually drive makes me want to dig out a traxxas RC car and drive that around for a bit
9:49 I've seen this same thing happen in RC cars, more commonly if using a gyro-sensing receiver. My best guess is the car thinks it's oversteering or understeering, but the car's gyro assumes it's still moving forward and incorrectly steers. As a hobbyist myself, I have yet to find an easy solution.
It's good to see that you are well and review - ready! Those tyres are awesome though... When will you review the Mclaren Senna GTR set? Just asking because it will go really well with my 42093.
Great review, Balazs! With I 40% discount I might get this set. Too bad the Control+ App sux even more than previously. And if I want to play a video game I will certainly not use this dumb virtual battle.
The in-app game reminds me of some of LEGO's proto-mixed-reality stuff from the '90s/early '00s. Some of it workd because it required interacting with physical things (e.g. Spybotics) but others were even worse than the buggy. It's a significant challenge to try to gamify toys but, as you say, the important thing is that you've got a physical toy to play with - you don't want to be looking away from it at a screen all the time. That buggy game *might* be good if it worked with 2 buggies and you could race and attack a real opponent... maybe.
That'd require sensors and other (expensive) equipment on the buggies to detect each other, and the dual control/focus issue is still there to resolve. I don't see how this could work unless they try something like Mario Kart Live.
2:26 this piece was kinda already existing in the CaDa construction sets (a "knock off" lego company, that makes some good quality sets! And the cada pieces are also of a pretty good quality)
I tested the L motor with a traditional geared rack steering setup, and it couldn't even get past the calibration process without popping out of gear or exploding the whole assembly. I see why they used this odd steering setup: the steering program for powered up isn't sensitive enough for delicate technic parts. I was hoping to convert some classic technic sets to Powered Up, but this is a big setback.
Battle Mode seems like a response to Mario Kart Live's AR elements. Just, y'know, without the AR elements or any sense of fun. Maybe they're planning to update it with a two-player mode? I noticed a lot of the marketing features 2 kids driving 2 cars. Perhaps they're holding off on it during the launch of the set, so it doesn't come across as 'hey, you just bought this expensive new car; now you gotta buy a second one to get the complete experience'. (Or maybe a 2-player battle mode was the plan, but Lego's marketing said 'nope, we're not convincing kids to spend €260 on two cars' and the designers tried to salvage the mode with a virtual opponent. Either way, not a great look, Lego.) Thanks for the review!
I get that this pokes fun at Lego, but keep in mind a good amount of hobbyists like myself started with Lego growing up and still enjoy Lego. For RC, I've went to hobby-grade, but I do occasionally try building models of mechanisms in Lego.
I checked the L and the XL in my Arocs-Scale trucks, they have two drive motors and a weight of 5 to 6 kg (my TGX with the container trailer). With the L the technic hub shuts down earlier than with the XL.
A good set of Li-ion batteries would do this set well.. The customs sound effects that simulates your horn for your buggy are typical and the Pokémon style battles seems awkward unless you were in the Baja 1000.. Good review and looking forward to purchase this set when its available
It is a very good buggy, it is beautiful and I am very interesting but his price is expensive for a small car who has not much bricks. The noise in the application control+ is funny. The buggy 42124 is more better than the buggy 42101.
The best way to make any Lego set motorized and remote controllable is simply build a traditional rc chassis of it's size then fit the frame on it. The longer Lego doing it the worst it gets imo after watching all these pre-release reviews on YT.
If the profile had all the bells and whistles required for precise remote control then I would not say anything about the sounds effects. But with a single poorly designed joystick and no other options, such "extra" is pretty sad to see.
Interesting idea, but the execution of the Battle mode is still a complete failure. You can't drive a car around in real life while trying to "fight" a virtual opponent.
Nice review! I really dont like the path lego is choosing. 130 bucks for some motors and a couple of pieces.... at least put a decent remote control in there. Remember the old buggys with 2 buggy motors? They had some serious power and speed!
And those old buggys had even less pieces as they needed huge chunks of plastic to survive the power and speed of the buggy motors... those times are gone.
I'm looking to buy eventually a 2nd technic hub with motors, but a set like this one or the rally car is cheaper and it comes with other pieces... but the thing is I only want the XL motors, so I don't know maybe I'll buy the xtreme off roader...
Could you do a tutorial for this model on how to offset the steering slightly with the powered up app? I'm finding 42124 has a slight right bias, due to the differential. More noticeable when going off-road. Thank you!
You can use this guide, it has code to adjust steering. There are custom controllers (buttons and sliders) introduced since then, makes it even easier to set up. Here's the guide - racingbrick.com/lego-powered-up-simple-car-control/
If I had a choice in 2021, which car should I pick to buy- the top gear rally car, or this? Also great video which I cannot believe was filmed in a hospital!
Brilliant review as always, thank you. As a 60+ builder I, like you hate the rubbish controller. Every comment you made regarding this mirrors mine. Joystick control really? I would never use any of the other stupid stuff. Much better if they say had a mode which restricted the power a bit and then a Nitro boost button with a limit on use. Could make racing with another model much more fun. Another button use, random race start lights. Press the button and F1 style start, easy to rate, as the controller could measure how quickly you could be on the start. Add Buwizz (hint) and then you would have a really great model to review I think.
I like the knobby, realistic tires, and I'm surprised how it has such a low piece count. Also, RB, to clarify, it's RADIO controlled, not remote controlled. Remote controlled cars are those ancient ones, which have a cable between the remote and the car, or the kind that uses IR. Modern R/Cs use radio waves, and thus the controller is called a transmitter, or radio. Just a little detail that kinda bugs me. Great video though! Edit: Yeah, the sound effects are bizarre, although my sister will find it hilarious...kids and farts, don't even get me started about that...and the "battle" thing is just downright strange.
I guess the remote vs radio label can be an issue for RC enthusiasts only :) I think we can agree that the Tx *is* a remote that uses radio waves, so technically it is remote controlled as it's a bigger category :) If you have a look at Amazon or Walmart, they also categorize these as remote controlled, that's a common term used.
But I get your point, it's like people calling these motors Control+ motors :) Yeah I see the label on the set but I think these are Powered Up or LPF2 motors :)
I am a R/C enthusiast (like R/Cs, not Lego RCs, although I certainly would love a Lego RC set) though, so it bugs me a little more then other people. But I see your point.
lego seems to think its only for little kids, i just use the parts to make models that are ten times better than what they provide, literally just the parts...
Couple days ago they updated the powered up app with new songs for the piano AND most importantly they fixed the scaling issue on iOS! So now all the buttons appear in the correct size for all interfaces within the app.
11:21 trust me here you do not want to put these in dirt because all of the dirt will get into the axles and gears and act like sandpaper destroying the model, I have firsthand experience with this so please keep it out of any sand/ dirt
Luckily this is LEGO so you can easily replace the damaged parts ;) If you check my videos I play regularly outdoors with my RC LEGO sets and they are all fine.
Dear Racing Brick. I have two questions. Where did you get the remote controller that you have in your hands? You are controlling the Lego Technic 42124 Off-road buggy with it. By the way, does it works with other Lego Technic remote controlled sets too, normally controlled by the Lego Technic app on Android devices like smartphones and tablet computers?
You can buy the remote at lego.com, the number is 88010. Without the Powered Up app it only works with the AAA hub, but if you create a control profile for it in the Powered Up app just like I did then you can configure it for any set you prefer. Here's a video about it in action with a previous version of the app, now the configuration can be even more simple - ua-cam.com/video/hLbr4si2Qfs/v-deo.html
Re rechargeable batteries. Have you seen the new lithium ion rechargeable batteries. They are 1.5 Volt, and you recharge them from any USB port. They're available on e-Bay. They can be recharged up to 1,000 times. They are available in different capacities and prices.
At first I was like wow, finally a really cool motorized buggy, but when you started driving it... The app looks terrible and the car is ridiculously slow, for that price you can buy a real, fast and capable RC Car. To me, this set is a missed oportunity :(
I honestly don't understand why people expect an RC buggy's performance. It is a toy for indoor usage, and for a room it is pretty fast. Actually with this stupid joystick controller it is too fast, very difficult to control. If you set up a useable configuration in the Powered Up app then it's pretty good, but the speed is more than enough. I know you can buy a capable RC car, but that is an RC car and this is a LEGO set. Two very different worlds.
@@RacingBrick Well, I don't expect performance of a hobby grade RC car, I know it's a toy, but it would be a much better toy if it was faster and had a better controller.
I totally agree with the controller part, LEGO desperately needs a physical controller with proportional controls separately for throttle and steering.
well i know some ppl like joystick better but i hate it - i would prefer to have sliders in case of those useless sounds from phone... - well hope they will add option to choose sliders cuz its better ( i like app and design of it) also the "battle" mode seems something they just need to add to say "hey we have new things" - its totally useless and i guess even as i kid i would get bored fast cuz of it
How did you connect the powered up remote to the technic hub? On their website it doesn’t list that as an option. I’m hooking a train engine up to mine and I would LOVE to buy that cheap remote to let my son drive the train with it rather than my phone or iPad.
A szervó mennyire szervós? remek videó!
Does your custom Powered Up profile allow for incremental speed and steering? The virtual joystick would be a deal-breaker for me, but your custom controls look great.
@@cobalt_plated_eyeball I did not mean you can change the size, but you can gradually change the direction of steering and also the speed, not only 0/1 states.
I don't like how Lego is using smart apps to control their technic models. How long will they keep supporting the app? Will the app still work in a few years?
This was raised a million times already. The protocol is open and there are already several 3rd party apps, so even if LEGO discontinues the support in e.g. 10 years there will be other solutions available. You can still play 30 year old video games on your smartphone so there will be a solution for this one as well in the future.
I agree that LEGO dropped the ball with the app, like what the actual heck were they thinking?!!?!? Who in the sandhill needs dumb sound effects and if i wanted to play a fighting game I would play clash of clans like geez. Great model tho, I think I will probably buy it when it becomes available.
If it get a nice discount on sale maybe. the buggy itself looks great.... but the app is useless. Lego make enough money to hire some decent coders to make that stuff better.
Palindromic set number! That won’t happen again for a while!
The new alternating beam is super interesting, I bet it's going to help massively with a lot of builds
So happy to see a review from you. Take care of your self and get well soon.
That fart sound is just ridiculous
BUT those bi directional beams are stunning. I can see a million uses for them esp in building big trusses and so on.

This is a very good comment. Truly no sarcasm.
Why were you in the hospital? Edit: Nvm I watched the video, so glad the surgery went well, so glad you recovered well.
Looks like some of the rc cars from the eighties and early nineties! Tyco Turbo Hopper comes to mind.

And if I want to play a video game I will certainly not use this dumb virtual battle.
i got the top gear set for half priced and i still felt that was over priced
The in-app game reminds me of some of LEGO's proto-mixed-reality stuff from the '90s/early '00s. I really like your review. Already looking forward to your modification of this model with buwizz! ;-)
as a vintage rc buggy enthusiast i just found out about this! and i might get one!
Oh reminds me of my old Jet Hopper from back in the 80s
2:26 this piece was kinda already existing in the CaDa construction sets (a "knock off" lego company, that makes some good quality sets! And the cada pieces are also of a pretty good quality)
Cada also have pretty good remote control for pf motors
Well it is new to LEGO. Not CaDa.
The Chinese copy lego, lego copies Chinese bricks :)
Cada doesn't copy old Lego sets, they make their own designs or work together with fan designers
Well they don't copy sets but they borrowed a lot of part designs, so I think we cannot blame LEGO here to get inspired by them :)
10+ Lego, really? This is like a 4+ set. Thanks for the review by the way!
i highly doubt a 4 year old would be able to build this by himself without help
I tested the L motor with a traditional geared rack steering setup, and it couldn't even get past the calibration process without popping out of gear or exploding the whole assembly. I see why they used this odd steering setup: the steering program for powered up isn't sensitive enough for delicate technic parts. I never noticed but the buggy is based off the city buggy set, also thanks for the tutorial I wanted to see if I should get this or not
cant wait for mod videos to make this faster and stronger...
I read that wrong. Thought you said mod videos to make the farts louder! :)

Fart means speed in Swedish! ;)
And in Norwegian
wow is it around 70% more expensive (for euro) from previous Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer because of control+ ?
The sound effects are an embarrassment to lego. Needs a bigger motor. I was excited for it although after this honest review I will be saving my money
Nice video review, when will you review 42125 Ferrari? I just like your style and POV other than someome who think he is great 😉
I will finish the review in a few days

Finally a quick buggy, that's great. But 130 bucks, seriously??? Come on Lego!!!
Yeah I've raced RC Offroad cars for the past 14 years. This is never going to be used offroad. It's what we call A Shelf Queen.
Personally I think the fart sound effect is perfect for any age group lol
If the profile had all the bells and whistles required for precise remote control then I would not say anything about the sounds effects. But with a single poorly designed joystick and no other options, such "extra" is pretty sad to see.
I do agree that they should of prioritized the joystick and controls.
That alternating beam. Yes. Very yes. So many struggles to rigidly change stud direction begone!
The app is sad :(
So the car is nice (albeit being really expensive because of the Control+ parts), but the app is a big no.
This is the RC car that I wished the late 90s one was, which I bought and was kinda disappointed by almost instantly.
Excellent review. Thank you!
I think this whole duck-fart-etc, and Battle Mode with the power-ups is a reference to ReVolt, which was a huge fun back in 1999. ;)
Interesting idea, but the execution of the Battle mode is still a complete failure. You can't drive a car around in real life while trying to "fight" a virtual opponent.
Welcome back!!
I really want this set but if they don't change the joystick controls, I won't be, as much as I want it

Egy igazi buggy szett akkor lenne, ha olajos gátlókkal szerelnék. Ez egy igazi upgrade lenne a legónál. Akkor lehetne értelme az outdoor-ságnak.
A szervó mennyire szervós? remek videó!
A LEGO nem állítja hogy ez kültéri szett lenne, nem összehasonlítható az RC buggykkal. Egész más a célcsoport, itt továbbra is az építés a lényeg.
@@RacingBrick persze, tudom. De hatalmas ugrás lenne. Maga a gátló valós működésének tanulmányozása is remek dolog.
Does your custom Powered Up profile allow for incremental speed and steering? The virtual joystick would be a deal-breaker for me, but your custom controls look great.
Sure, the sliders are proportional
@@RacingBrick how did you resize them?
@@cobalt_plated_eyeball I did not mean you can change the size, but you can gradually change the direction of steering and also the speed, not only 0/1 states.
Power functions still are better.
I was absolutely sold until the joystick control...
You can easily create a better slider control - ua-cam.com/video/AuL-wdn3v4g/v-deo.html
Perfect investigation. I will drive it with BrickController2 and instead of alkaline i will use buwizz 3 or lipo adjustment. Thank you
I don't like how Lego is using smart apps to control their technic models.
@@RacingBrick Thank you for your answer.
Looks like an old Tamiya Grasshopper
Great review!
The app turns me off...
Thanks for the review.
like the horn thing is cool but why would a buggy fart?
This is a nice set!!
I am excited for the AMA!
It'll come
@@RacingBrick Nice! Looking forward to it and glad you are doing good!
Lol Tesla fart feature LEGO edition 😂
I never have the inner end of the rim facing out. I always put the inner the way it should inner in the inner side
thanks for the perfect review
