I've just bought a TP-Link AX11000 MU-MIMO Tri-Band.. But reception is still shit at the second floor.. If I'd buy a second one.. Can I use it to extend my first router? Would it work wireless or do I need a ethernet cable between them?
I have the RT-AX58u and RT-AC68u setup as aimesh that replaced my airport extreme. i live in a 3 storey TH. I am so glad I went with asus, it is easy to set up and configure. I got the 68u used from kijiji.

I am not sure why you wouldn't use the Better Router as the Primary?! The AC5300 should be your Primary, it has more through put capability and it is Tri-Band (5GHz, 5GHz, 2.4GHz). The AC2900 is only Dual Band ( 5GHz, 2.4GHz) and not as much though put and Bandwidth capabilities. By setting it up like you did you are Bottlenecking your Network and only getting 2 Bands for AiMesh... Plus the AC5300 would probably have better overall coverage to start with when going to the Stairs without the need for the second Router! Also why do you need so much Bandwidth in the hallway at the Stairs?! 🤷🏻♂️

You should have your strongest router as the primary as it will be handling the heavier load 😉
