- Since it's been years since I covered the topic, I figured it was time to do another what is mesh wifi video. In this Decodr episode, we discuss what mesh wifi is, its benefits, as well as what the difference is between mesh wifi and wifi extenders plus all the new wifi standards that now work with mesh like WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E. Come watch!

Just ordered an extender today because been having lots of dropped service lately. After watching this though I think I'm just going to return it and go for a mesh now that I better understand the difference between the two. Thanks for the informative video!
An extender is terrible!!!
Can it be used with the main router or do you need to change it as well?
I only decided to get TP Link Deco X60 / AX5400 3-pack MESH wifi 6 system recently after all these years of internet .
Very good coverage even only with ONE mesh is switched on.
.
I am happy with the installation............................. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the awesome videos. These explain concepts so well, especially for those who are not technically oriented
When we finally got a gigabit fiber network in our neighborhood I decided to rethink everything so purchased an eero 6+ mesh wifi system with 3 boxes. It’s awesome. Never any issues. Very even coverage even out into the yard.
Thank you for this video, I learned a lot! I had no idea I needed mesh wifi, now I can't live without it. We are just getting Google Fiber, so I'm really excited to see the difference in streaming, my daughter's gaming, etc. I will subscribe because you made a dull subject (for this biology nerd) easy to learn... oooh, squirrel... shiny thing!
Thanks for this! I have a new mesh system and now I understand how it works.
Glad I could help!
Your video looks great! Can I ask what type of camera you're using for the screen-facing segments?
Thank you for explaining this in an understandable way for us who were born too early for all this tech talk. We are always struggling with our wifi, provided by Xfinity, which really stinks. We have tried extenders but we still can't even watch 30 mins of tv without it having to buffer. Thank you again. we will looking into this Mesh wifi!
Great video. Very clear and with a bit of humour to cheer up a fairly dry subject. Well done and thanks. Michael
Perfect, concise explanation, no waffle, entertaining and full of all the info we need to make a decision! Thanks 🙏🏻
Absolutely a fantastic video with tons of useful information. Many, many thanks!
Thank you!
Leaving a comment to boost the interaction. Great explanation mate, thankyou
Thank you!
Great content as always.
Love these Decodr episodes.
Keep them coming.
Thank you so much!!
Thank you. A simple, clear and concise walkthrough on a Mesh set up. Sold!
i absolutely loved this video and loved the transitions from room to room.
Thank you!
@0:12 Bro came in like he was going to tell me about the birds and the bees. 😂
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the great explanation!
My Cable tech recommended a Mesh Router to extend my WiFi range, but do I totally replace my current cable company supplied WiFi router or does a Mesh Router plug into my existing? And if it totally replaces my current WiFi router, will my cable company give me the standard excuse of “It’s not compatible with our system” as seems to always happen?
Thanks for the introduction to this topic. A couple of questions if I may:
1) Each nodes must be plugged into the mains for power but does it transmit any signals on the mains wiring? The reason I ask this is because HiFi critics often say that they have measurements to show that wifi extenders introduce noise into the system which has a detrimental effects the performance of Hi Fi components.
2) Do you have to run an ethernet patch cable between the base and the other nodes?
They dont need bash cable, but i believe they can utilize one if present. I dont know if they can balance the load between fired and fireless backbone though.
Thanks for asking those questions that were left out in the video
Why does everyone have to show a 15 step process making a cup of coffee ?? 🤦 It's almost like they think their video will be better by doing so....🙄
Look at his haircut. There's your answer.
Bald man mad @@Iloveyoutube11
It's called b roll footage lol. It could be anything, but in a home environment, the most common could be the little coffee montage.
Bro my question same lol
I wil be purchasing very soon the new Macbook M2 Ultra capable of using WiFi 6. I am fortunate enough to live in a house already wired for it by my son-in-law. I can't wait to witness the performance first hand as I begin to use the new system. Thanks for showing me what to expect. I moved here from the mountains in California (because of fire), and find myself reunited with family - and technology is my background thing so I watch all of your videos with anticipation. Thank you.
That's great, enjoy it and glad video this helped! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thorough and understandable for the less savvy.
awesome explanation! One quick question. Just bought a 2 mesh. What happens to the router wifi i had before? will i have 2 wifis or is going to be unified?
did you figure this out
Yes, he did
Never knew about mesh till last week. Set up a 5 piece eero 6e pro system.
I have 4 in the house and one in the garage and now I've got insane speed anywhere on my property. It took about an hour to set everybody up and its been wonderful.
which one did you end up going with ?
@@benhartson I went with the Eero 6e pro. Initially I set up 5 units as my house was fiarly large and I wanted garage coverage too, but I found out that the range these have is pretty good and I've sent 2 back. I actually had too many and it was causing occasional issues with not knowing which hub to connect me to. 1 on each floor and one on the garage and I have excellent coverage.
Hey, do each eero require a Ethernet cord or is it just one that requires the Ethernet cord and the others won’t require it ?
@@WarFighter so just the one nearest your modem needs an ethernet cable, the other ones in the mesh just require a USB charger which each unit comes with.
I have learned soooo much today. Thank for an expertly crafted and informative video!
Question: how to start with a mesh system ? I have a normal router (with wifi) and 4 output ports, that I currently use - If I replace my router with one of the mesh system then I have a limit of ethernet ports so do i first have a switch from my modem and then use one output to the mesh system or ???
Good video, Dude. I dig your channel's aesthetic.
Sending you gratitude & appreciation for an explanation that provided enough info & detail to grasp what mesh wifi accomplishes without the discouraging fog of incomprehension a sooo NOT techie can feel. 🙏👍
I have a google mesh network for home automation and improved WiFi. Funny thing is, i was surprised when the router i plugged in to use as an ethernet only connection automatically surrendered control to the mesh network, which tells me that if I wanted to, I could theoretically use any WiFi device to extend my network. That would make things very interesting if that is the case.
i've been using a wifi6 mesh network for about 4 years now. so stressful having to deal with the dumb connection between the nodes literally daily when the 5GHz channels start dropping for some reason. 🤦🏻♂️
Just buy standard routers and connect in Access Point mode, they are usually cheaper than mesh satellite devices, and you can also set them up with the same SSID - your devices will auto switch to whichever access point is nearest.
Thanks for a well done video that explains the mesh wifi well.
I liked the details of making coffee in your apartment. Coffee is your signature style. Great explainer video 👍
I see AT&T offering up to 5 GB. Which mesh supports to 2 -5 GB?
Many thanks for this video. Very helpful :)
It looks like the strength and quality of the slave node depends on the Wi-Fi connection it gets from the master node. What’s the best way to maximize the slave node's source signal?
Remove obstacles that obstruct a direct line between the two or put them closer
Absolutely fantastic explaination!
WELLL...
Yes it's stupid-easy to set up, but there are glitches with old wifi devices, like WEP printers and such... At least it's an issue with the Eero mesh; YMMV. Before jumping in to installing the mesh, it would be nice to mention this...
ALSO, some relatively new, but older smartphones (like older Samsungs in my case) do not host the mesh well... the app gets clunky...
AND... some of us less-fortunate folks out there got some work-mandated equipment (usually older, but tell THEM that...) and aps that don't fly well if there are multiple network entry point in the home - which some of us gotta do...
But this video is awesome.
I have the Google Nest Wifi Pro and its great (yes i know its capped at 1 gig by 1 gig but we cant get those speeds here) it has fixed all of our wifi coverage issues in our home
Hey what about the ping in mesh router? Is it same or higher....extender usually has bad ping
Thank you. Using a mesh network, we would like to connect a USB printer to the Mesh thus creating a Wi-Fi printer. On your screen shots I do not see any USB Type A ports. We could just purchase a new inexpensive Wi-Fi printer and be done with it, however we do not like disposing of a perfectly good USB printer.
Thanks for explaining this. Unfortunately, these are no longer available. Are there any others you'd recommend?
Awesome! I can finally put my NAS next to my bed where I've always wanted it. ;)
To sleep to the lullaby hum of its fans
We have the Google mesh in our house and we love it, no issues whatsoever
Is it the Pro ?
@@darkkforest just the regular one, I've had it for a few years now
Hi thanks that was so good to hear your video on mesh wifi . I have a very large fig tree between my studio and house the nbn is connected to the house and I am looking for a solution as there is no internet signal at the studio some 30-40 meters away from the house. Do you think the mesh will work for me . The house is double storey and the shed is metal mainly.
Thanks for your help😄
Thank you for this. Any chance you can discuss about the terminology in the wifi mesh configuration GUI? not the app.
Perfect explanation. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I have mesh Wi-Fi at my home works well!
Excellent video !!thank you
Like you’re simple to the point style. Can you do one on WIFI 7 comparison?
Thanks for the explanation of things. It makes it much clearer, but with some challenges. If I want to move from the old conventional 2.4GHz Wifi to 5 or 6 GHz, how do I cover a space of 8000M2 with a lot of concrete (fortified) walls. I would need a lot of mesh wifi devices. Correct or is there a smarter way of doing that? Salamat
Peter thank you for explaining the wi fi gor us.
Question for you .
I have wi fo in my house which covers my computer and Internet. When i tried yo hook up my cameras outside and to view them from inside my house my wi fi is weak and cannot see my car outside..which type of wi fi should i get in irder yo see my vehicle from inside my home on my phone.. thanks
I think since Bluetooth is about 30ft connection, would you think that maybe these mesh aps' are interconnexted that way and has an algorythm or auto adjustment amongst each oth interms of antenuation, obstructions, that during setup doesn't it ask you to place the access points one by one during setup? I think its seting that up accordingly with the aforementioned in mind, obstructions, antenuation, having its mimmo or algo qos in its code. Possibly during setup adjusting the Dbi as well during setup even things like wifi throttle, Dbi and range bluetooth, Channel interference.
Can you connect Mesh to a Router and then distribute?
Thank you for this video! I need a wired connection for my work from home position and am looking for solutions. If I have the mesh routers wirelessly connected to the main router can I hardwire my laptop to one of the mesh routers? Thank you
Great explanation!
thanks man, solid video
Very nerdy :-) informative! Great vid! Thanks!
Can I plug two satellites in to the main router? I have the CAT 5e cables going in two different directions and just need to extend my wireless.
Thank you very much. Needed to educate myself on the difference between the new mesh 😎👌 much appreciated my bro. Keep them coming 💪😎👌
How do you know where the edge is though buddy, i think thats the only question i have which is preventing me from buying right now!
Nice video. Is it dangerous for the health to put the satellite mesh near your bed?
Hmmm I'm still confused as to how this might work - I wouldn't use any of that stuff on the app! All I need is a booster to increase the range of my router, which is terrible. My broadband provider told me to not get a mesh system as it it is too complicated, so I bought an 'extender' which just reduced the signal even more. Maybe our house just isn't suited to wi-fi.
I’m really wanting to switch to a mesh system, but my home only has coax. Do I have to have Ethernet in order to use mesh?
Hi! My apartment complex provides wifi for us in the complex with our rent. Do you think I can connect the original mesh router to the ethernet port in our living room wall and have that be our "main mesh router", or does this only work if you have an actual modem in the apartment...
So every mesh needs an Ethernet to connect it to the modem? My modem only has 1 Ethernet hole
i have a question. My wife and I just bought our first home and we love it! We currently have a NETGEAR Nighthawk RAXE500 Router for our home and it works great but as I am starting to understand how Mesh Wifi works, it is something I definitely want to get for our home down the road. is buying a Mesh Wifi System worth getting for a 1400 Sq Ft Home? or is sticking with our NETGEAR RAXE500 just fine?
We just got a starter home for now and once we start having a family in a couple of years, we will move into a bigger house then
If your current wifi setup works well across your home and you have no issues with signal and performance, you don't necessarily need any mesh devices.
Thanks!!! Great info!!!
I have those same Le Creuset mugs
Thanks for teaching everybody how to make coffee
You're welcome
Using your link to the Motorola Q14 doesn't turn up any places which currently carry this mesh system.
I am wondering whether it would work in my setup. I have a Modem placed in a locker above the entrance door. Router is about 2 meters away from it in living room. Shall I then connect 1 of such Mesh router into the main router and second as an access point ?
I cannot replace the router completely because it's also allowing the connection to TV from my network provider
@the unlockr would the mesh wifi systems work with DSL? My neighborhood lives in the stone ages an the HOA voted against fiber a few years ago. Starlink was my other option but this might be a cheaper option. Appreciate the video
Well, the q14 part of this didn't age well. turns out the q14 was a defective design that broke down and had to pulled from the shelf. I got a TPlink x75 and so far been happy.
Would like to use the mesh extender to cover the distance from my house to the barn and garage which is about 150 ft from the house. Seems to far for the mesh units to work?
Super helpful! Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Great video thanks 🙏
Thanks for watching!
I don't get it. Surely the backhaul link is still subject to the same limitations as the usual 2.4GHz, 5GHz etc. bandwidth limits because the backhaul link runs on the same generational frequencies? And it's still receiving and retransmiting like a wifi extender would so surely latency goes up and useable bandwidth still goes down when compared to a wired Wireless Access Point and is probably only slightly faster than a range extender version?
I'd like to see real world test results in terms of speed, latency and jitter for mesh vs wifi extender vs wired WAPs. Obviously using standards that are not artificially restricted so use a 2.5Gb, 5Gbps or 10Gb ethernet link (and not 1Gbps) when comparing to a 3.5Gbps WiFi link.
Great info. Luv'd the ending! LoL 😆
Thank you and ha thanks!
Nice coffee setup!
Solid video. Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks for the information, I’m still confused as to whether this system replaces my modem and router? Or does it plug into either of them?
This would plug into your router. It can't replace the modem as it isn't a modem.
6e is amazing! What i dnt understand is why theyre still making 2.4 devices
Great video but can I ask a silly question (this is all new to me). With a mesh system does it have a WPS
So I can connect my tv, printer with just one push like I do now ?
When you swap out the router how does the new one know how to connect to your internet provider account?
Hey, thanks for the great video. If the router+modem that’s supplied by my internet provider is just Wi-Fi 5, will that limit my speeds even if I get Wi-Fi 6 mesh system? Cheers
🏏 I’ve been all about the cricket betting. My brother's tips have been golden so far. Have you ventured into sports betting yet
You for got the tight beam laser extender
When you talk about plugging in the other 2 mesh where does it plug into. I know the main one plugs into modem
The other ones just need to be plugged in to power and that's it
Best buy says they are around 1500 square feet in coverage. Is that for EACH mesh device or all three?
Great video. Thanks for getting me up to speed... pun intended.
What would you recommend to share a wifi signal to an accessory dwelling about 200 foot away from the main house with fiber internet? Thanks for this awesome video, it explained mesh wifi really well.
probably just run a cable... or install a point to point microwave link
@@haydenpulchinski4836 Very good video! This is my issue as well...what do you mean by point to point microwave link?
Very clear...Thanks..
Thank you for watching
I wish I knew about this before I bought my extender.
im still confused does it replace my current wifi box? or wha? because this is sounding like it replaces it (i live in the UK so please tell me if its any different i desperately need better wifi and want to buy one of these
I just bought a new tp-link archer: aX3000 but i dont know if its mesh compatible. Do i need another router that's mesh compatible or can i still use this one?
But....do you "need" it?? I never had any issues with my wifi signal. I don't have 5k apps, (exaggeration), running all over the house and on my phone. What is the reason for this necessity, or is it a necessity?
Thanks a lot!
I have an art studio in my grandparents garage attic. It isn’t crazy far away. I get 1-2 bars on average but sometimes more. Do you guys think this would work for us??
We got mesh wifi6 and now our ring camera wont work any idea on how to get it to work without wiring an ethermet cable
