I like when bad endings actually help expand on a character’s personality or motivations that actually aren’t seen in the good ending. Putting them in the worst case scenario and seeing how they react to it is something only games can do.
Also, I’m excited to see what you have planned for the future.

This is the true fun of bad endings for me, too. Every character, if written believably, has a breaking point. It's incredibly interesting to see what circumstances are enough to finally break your favorites, and how they change when that happens.
Fiction gives us a safe, cathartic space to explore what happens when the worst comes to pass, like Daryl covers in his videos on the peace of being lost or the helplessness of Deepnest, and bad endings are a fiction within that fiction - in actual canon, everything is fine.

This is a major part of it for me too, and it's why I love games like visual novels that have distinct routes. You might have one whole plot where you're in the antihero's shadow, trying to get on his level but prove him wrong -- and then another whole route where this fixture in your character's life _dies,_ and you have to see who you'd be without him.

As someone who enjoys story-driven games, I really like optional bad endings. Unfortunately, the games I play usually don't feature such thing ^^' Majora's Mask is the best example for this, Skyward Sword has something for it, too. The only other Zelda-game with a proper bad ending is Minish Cap of all things... I wish Zelda-games would go this route more often!

Bad endings are just a conjecture. So are good endings. Until anything hapens... it's anyone's game. Just as things can go wrong, they can go well. No one can tell until the outcome has been revealed.
Believe me, I'm autistic and have anxiety too. I take the worst case scenario as a posibility, but not as the only possibility. The anxiety is the bitchy saboteur. I once was in the same situation as you... big hug ny friend.

I won't lie, the psychology aspect of this channel is what initially brought me to your videos, because of my fascination of psychology and my love of games. Each video helped me learn and understand new things, and hell, it even got me interested in wrestling (even if by a small part). But the thing I liked most about it was how you seemed to genuinely like talking about all the subjects you do. I often put videos in the background to listen to people ramble on and on about their likes and dislikes, its just fun.

My favorite Bad Ending of a game ever is Persona 3. It's not the most obvious ending but soooo much goes wrong. Yukari's line about not caring what you want with your life, neither Junpei nor Yukari knowing how they met, Aigis clearly remembering you but not being able to bear looking you in the eye, Mitsuru's speech about her father dying from an illness despite it very obviously feeling wrong, and the fact that they all die with no one knowing or expecting it while it's coming. Especially with the fact that Ken dying without remembering what happened to his mother. It's just such a perfect fuster cluck of every thing that could possibly go wrong from memory erasure and oh my god I just love it so much

    • @MidniteSpectre
      @MidniteSpectre 6 місяців тому +2

I believe the best thing about it is that its a choice. You can choose that ending. It wasn't beought about by branching flowcharts of decisions, but just one single choice, and it tells you very clearly what happens if you make this choice.
It is understandable, being told that this is the natural state of things, that this was inevitable and that resistance is futile.

I found this channel due to my interest in Psychology, but I stayed because of your personality and even your voice. I watch whenever something from you pops up anyway, it's a soothing thing for me. I'll miss psychology but I'm happy you're going to go in a direction which you'll feel more free to discover yourself, at the end of the day, you've amassed a following who want you to be happy and will enjoy whatever you do. Good luck with it all and I can't wait to see what you do!
In terms of the actual video, I find that I replay one specific memory over and over again, the same 'what ifs'. This memory was when I had my first semi serious motorcycle crash. I remember slipping and losing control of the bike, being flung over a curb and having my head on the road while my body was on the paving, then I remember looking up at a wheel of an 18 wheeler that was passing by safely on the other side of the road. Everything goes through my mind whenever I approach that corner now but I'm more confident then ever, but what if? What if I had gone an inch or two further? what if I had hit a car? what if I had serious injuries besides a messed up ankle? what if I hadn't insisted on my full gear? What if I had a bad ending? All these go through my mind but then I return to reality and realise I'm okay. I think that's what I do it for, remembering that I am okay.

had me stressin through the whole video xD
But of course I support this change!! I love your content- the psychology was just another neat aspect! So getting to see more of your content and ideas and hearing what you think about games even if its not Psych based is still going to be amazing :D
I can't wait to see what comes next, and I hope you have a great time making it all happen :]

Daryl, psychology is a fun sub topic. Which a lot of people love to sit and analyze together. Your channel has always been “Daryl Talks Games” not psyche of play. I think removing it from the past is a little much. As it was what it was. Though for the new focus of a channel to be games is honestly heart warming. As again you talk about games whatever they may entail. The good, the bad, the psyche. Really the raw emotion of how it makes you feel. Keep up the good work man.

Obsessing over the worst possible outcomes or inventing whole new awful scenarios to mentally live in and do all the emotional labor of experiencing was one of the first major hurdles I had to overcome when getting a handle on my depression and mental health. As covered here, the framing of a thing is the most important part; being glad that it wasn't worse and learning from it (or rejecting the what-ifs that intrusive thoughts present), instead of trapping yourself thinking that it could have been worse or beating yourself up for "not doing better".

so i just got into my first car accident ever - it was this morning, and i hit a deer from behind a slightly foggy windshield. my sister screamed, i tried to get over to the side, and in that moment i tried to think about what to do in the situation. one of the first things i actually thought of was the upward and downward counterfactual thinking, and it has helped tremendously with the terrifying situation. understanding what could have gone better, or even worse, it makes you realize how things are now, and what you couldn’t have controlled. thank you daryl for the breakdown of your crash story, and for giving me a sense of reprieve from something this scary.

Man this feels weird. Your videos have hit me on a deep place at times, and have helped me realize so much of myself. I just find it to be such a coincidence that the day after I realized so much of myself that I needed to free up and stop holding unto, I watch this. A video of you realizing you want to stop holding unto a format that has worked for you and evolve into something new. I will continue to watch your content and I can’t wait to see what you do in the future. ✌🏾

Dude, don't compare yourself to other people so much (or as you said "similar / identical" channels).
You're already unique because of your personality, not the way you narrate or talk, but in the way you think.
Psychology, a field I respect, is just another tool that allows you to talk about topics you select from another angle, it doesn't define your channel or being.
Even students pick their favorite teachers based on teacher's personality, not their job position.

Bruh the teasing and tension building was nuts, I didn't even notice the changes in the titles til recently, just holy crap!
Firstly, this was an awesome video for talking about the almost morbid drive for seeking bad endings and the likes as mentioned whilst ingraining your desires and plans for your channel. You've been a inspiration since I found you and a joy to listen to on repeat (especially whenever you mention Bioshock goddamn that is my butter to my croissants!)
Secondly, around halfway through the video with your snippets of you talking about feeling stuck and not enjoying games the same way anymore literally became the most relatable thing for me as a games university student; Something that's always become a problem for me, especially now as I enter my final year and on the design-related pathways no less, I feel that sometimes I'm trying to find ways to analyse games over just playing them. It's actually something I've been talking to others on my course about, and as it turns out, a fair amount of us don't game as much because of that fear, even to a point where we are doing the course just because rather than to enter industry like we probably were planning to do.
I dunno why the video reminded me of this specific thing or the likes, but the factor that content creators and even industry folks probably feel/do the same thing that makes gaming feel more like work than like play is... equally scary and comforting, as odd as it is.
Perhaps this is my wake-up call to try and not overanalyse it for uni work and assignments that don't even exist, and to try and put my need to replenish my enjoyment bar over my productive bar.

Jesus, I spent the video thinking your cut-ins were just some gimmick for the theme of the video. But then you catapult off of that into an epilogue ending that makes the "bad ending" canon, but just a step into a brighter future! Truly brilliant!
And it's also a huge thing I've been thinking myself while watching your videos over the years. I've always thought your opinions were worth more than just being bound to the pretext of psychology and have always been waiting for this evolution of content. I'm proud of you!

The bad ending I love the most is from Pikmin. Something about being stuck on a foreign planet, knowing that you have no way of heading back home, but still having to try.
Then you realize that even if you try, you won't make it back. You fall back down, knowing that you'll die either in the crash, or lack of breathable air, with you family never knowing where you are or what happened to you.
It is, of course, cut off by a funny cutscene to lighten the mood, but the final results screen does show before that. That, and the music that plays during then makes me feel really reflective of my life.

Thanks to this video I learned about CFT which is a staple of my chronic insomnia. It will help me put things into words next time I go to a therapist. Also I had a similar car crash when I was young, fortunately I was alone and my neck only got micro-fractured. It's lessons learned the hard way.
