except this has been going on for years before they really started cracking down and fining people. Even now people aren't even paying the fines and nothing's being done about it because we are handling crime, yes this is crime and those are criminals, so poorly.
In the UK fare evasion is virtually impossible. We have staff monitoring barriers at stations, ticket inspectors on trains, random stops in stations and sometimes police watching people go through barriers at stations waiting to catch people without tickets. Paying a fare here looks optional!
I HAVE A STORY: They evade the fare. They get caught by police. The police asks why they didn't pay. They evader says they can't afford it. The police then gives a $400 fine. The evader now can't afford to pay the fine because he or she has to pay rent. The evader now has a warrant for arrest. The evader is arrested and held in jail. The evader now see the judge. The judge now gives him or her jail time. The jail times passes. The evader goes back to his or her house. The evader sees a lock on his house. The evader goes to get it off. The evader is told he's been evicted for not paying his rent. The evader explains he was in jail for 4 months. The landlord says he can't rent the house to him again because his credit score went down. Now the evader is forced to live in a motel. The evader pays for a week in a motel. The evader wakes up the next day and goes to work. The evader's work manager tells them he or she is fired. The evader explain the situation to his or her manager. The manager wants to help but can't because of company policy. The evader now has no job. The evader returns to his motel room and uses his phone to apply for another job. A few days later the evader is receiving calls back but they're not giving him or her a job because of his or her jail time. The evader's week is over at the motel now he or she has to leave. The evader is now homeless. He or she continues to look for work but still being turned down. The evader's phone is now turned off. Now he or she can't call or receive any calls. Now the evader has no contact, no money, no food, no water and no home. The evader now is on the streets begging for money. The evader is told by police he or she can't do that. The evader now can't do anything. The winter comes and it is below zero. The evader now froze to death. The evader now is dead. THE END Point being: The system is designed so people are forced to break the law just to survive. The law is made so the rich stay rich, and the poor stay poor. That's the world we live in. And it all sucks! 😢
Oh well. There are consequences for actions. Just as I risk a $200 ticket when I speed on the freeway, you risk a fine, and more consequences, when you jump the fare. If you can't handle the consequences, don't do the crime. It's really that simple.
Well, for one they should install chest high faregates, barriers, and emergency doors. Along with locking said emergency door, it shouldn't be open in the first place
Emergency door should be alarmed-you can’t lock an emergency exit-that would be a fire code/penalty for Bart. If there was an emergency and ppl couldn’t run out due to a locked door = lawsuits.
Even worse at the DC Metro. You can be at any Metro station and literally see a gate jumper every 5-10 seconds. Right in front of security and station managers too and no one does a damn thing about it. Metro is losing $40 million per year to fare evasion alone.
Living In Los Angeles for nearly 35 years,I've seen this all too often. On the Metro Los Angeles buses,I see people with food and drinks with them and they claim that they can't pay the $1.75 and I think to myself "Wow! That Coke/other drinks would have paid the fare."
I'm sure if they went from $4.20 to $3.75 all these people would suddenly start finding it in their hearts to pay. In NYC, fare evasion costs the MTA 200 million dollars a year. Money stolen from every single person who relies on these public transportation system.
They raise the prices because so many people avoid the fares that they’re losing thousands of dollars every day and that forces them to increase the prices
Barriers shouldnt be necessary, fare evaders are the problem in all cities. These people are uncivilized and out of control, no morals or self respect. Look at japans rail system, i can watch countless videos on youtube and not a single fare evader like in america.
Interesting how they guy thinks he should now pay the fare because "they're watching". How about you pay because the system doesn't owe you a free ride.
Bart has more problems than "Fare Evaders". The stations are dated, homelessness, panhandling, drunks, drug dealers, muggers, car thieves, teens with no shame or guilt committing crimes for quick cash. I think BART needs to be proactive assigning more visible security monitors to patrol every station that has a zealous for public safety (example: Darren Long kick a** mall cop). Parking garages parking lots need to be more monitored since break ins happen everyday and people are reluctant to report the incident because BART is indifferent and refuse to release surveillance on property crimes.

The one person that made me angry was the person going through the handicapped gate......that is just really low. If people don't have enough $$ for fare, there are services they can sign up for to help pay for it.
I can afford it but I'm not paying for horrible service. Delays with warning, delays with no warning, trains showing up 20 minutes late. All lines have horrible service. Either I step over the turnstile or I check the gate to see if it's open. Half the times that gate is open. Too much stopping in between stops, moving too slow. You can pay for that mess if you want too. Hell, if the service was good I'm still not paying. Why pay when I can get a free ride. Cops are usually not in the subway, so why pay. Just open the gate or pull back the turnstile and then step over, simple as that.
This is what majority of SFPD rather do on a day to day basis rather than catching drug dealers and or any other sort of violence happening in the city, and there is always something violent going on in the city.
They aren't paying their fares, but does it really matter considering San Francisco taxes the hell out of the residents here? There are more important problems in San Francisco. The Elites not only want to steal money from you, they want to dictate what you do. San Francisco is not in California, it's its own country and it is run by tyrants.
Simple put a bar over the fare gates like NY and Chicago. someone tries jumping the gate, they smash their head into a bar. Public transit agencies complain they are running out of money yet their 98,000 employees get to ride scott free? Maybe that is the problem. Make the 91000 employees pay full fare. bet the system wouldn't be loosing $25 million a year.
He's not saving his money for MUNI...he's gonna evade that too. And to BART...whatever. Fix the free emergency door and maybe you can prevent about half the evaders. I say maybe. Good luck.
