As a fellow bus operator in Staten Island, I’d wish they would patrol our buses! It’s ridiculous, almost nobody pays and then if I ask them for the fare they’d get violent ! What happened to being respectful and following rules?
Thing is if that's the case you have to speak to everybody that walks on the bus without paying. I got called out a few days ago for trying to catch the bus. Mind you I was I don't like hopping the bus if I can pay I will pay but I got on and before I can even say anything to the bus driver while some Spanish white lady got on the bus he immediately was like no free rides even though the lady just walked on the bus. So I immediately took offense to it because he didn't even say anything to the lady and she didn't even pay her fare. Meanwhile I'm not a violent guy but I will stand up for myself
when the demographic for your service is poor people who can't afford vehicles, you have to expect the industry is going to be rough, especially when the city's police is paid for doing nothing as it is.
You have a very valid point. As a subway buff, I think that fare evasion is more prevalent on the buses than on rapid transit. There is lots of fare evasion that happens in Brooklyn. Two months ago, when I rode the SBS44, I had my fare ticket on hand, but saw no fare investigator aboard the bus. I know at least 3 lines that catch lots of fare evasion. Today, people are not like you and me anymore. They have changed to head to become worse as never before.
As a Bus Operator in a major Metro area, I can attest to the fact that people who want a free ride are 99x out of 100 the people who create trouble. Paying customers are responsible, law-abiding individuals at the start.
I'm guessing you didn't live in NYC in the 80's and early to mid 90's when part of mid town like Times Square was porn central and an open air drug market!! Or when NYC was averaging over a thousand homicides a yr, 2000+ in 89-91...
now the police will often not file the police report, they will just say they will look into it and talk to you a bit and send you on your way. so crime is down because of under reporting. Same with shoplifting, drug abuse, homeless camps, just turn and look the other way and crime has reduced
I am not fan of NYPD but they do be at certain stations regularly. I thought i would never say this but, they aren't enough cops to patrol every station and train car. Supposedly the National Guard is going to help them so that is going to be interesting.
They’re focused a lot on trains but the buses are loaded with farebeaters. They don’t even sneak in through the back exit as much. They just enter the bus from the front entrance, right past the bus driver.
The other day I was going to queens by bus and the bus officers that are on this specific spot who come in to check that everyone paied their fare were there and didn't come in the bus that day lol

fuck the rules

Keep in mind that there are some revenue passengers who do different wrong things in the omnibus, bus stops and in train stations.

Or when NYC was averaging over a thousand homicides a yr, 2000+ in 89-91...
People feel less safe when cops are around
Why they keep lieing about subway crimes is down like the people are stupid. Wow.
now the police will often not file the police report, they will just say they will look into it and talk to you a bit and send you on your way. so crime is down because of under reporting. Same with shoplifting, drug abuse, homeless camps, just turn and look the other way and crime has reduced
I was on about 4 subways yesterday and saw no police.anywhere. however, I did see about 6 people who jumped the turnstiles.
I am not fan of NYPD but they do be at certain stations regularly. I thought i would never say this but, they aren't enough cops to patrol every station and train car.
Supposedly the National Guard is going to help them so that is going to be interesting.

Exactly and good for you ! In all my years I never once hopped the turnstile despite being quite athletic ( track team, ran the hurdles ) . Also we grew up quite poor, on welfare for a while. Would never embarrass my mother like that. But in the end it served me well by not expecting freebies in life. Worked hard , studied and became quite well off.
