  • It's not as easy to say no to House as people think. Cameron takes on Cuddy's responsibilities for a day and she may be a little too okay with House's requests.

    From Season 5 Episode 13 ''Big Baby'': When Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) decides to spend more time caring for her baby, she hands some of her day-to-day responsibilities to Cameron (Jennifer Morrison). One of them is supervising House (Hugh Laurie), whose patient is a very nice special-education teacher who collapsed in class. House doesn't think that her niceness is a good thing.

    I love these kinds of clips, because other than just being a recap of an episode, it shows us the literal point of view from another character. Cameron hands off a case to House and then stops thinking about it because she needs to delegate brain power to her other duties; and then this maniac doctor just barges in, spouts some medical mumbo jumbo and in 5 seconds you gotta unravel what he's talking about and make a decision, it really illustrates the chaos of Cuddys job, without even involving Cuddy

    Ironically, if Cameron had been more like House she'd have been a better Cuddy. The piece of House's mindset that Cameron was missing was "good things usually happen, bad things sometimes happen": a process that usually produces good results can still be a good process even if sometimes it produces bad results, so long as the process produces more good results than other processes.
    House wants an insanely invasive and probably harmful procedure but has no evidence for why it's necessary -> Cuddy demands SOMETHING concrete before okaying it -> House looks harder, finds something that allows Cuddy to okay the procedure
    That's a good process. It usually produces good results, and sometimes produces bad results, but it's better than other processes. Cameron was unable to trust the process, because she couldn't handle the possibility of a patient dying due to a call she made. If she's a regular doctor, those kinds of decisions are above her paygrade (which is why Cuddy needs to okay them in the first place), but if she's Cuddy, then the buck stops with her. So she'll always say yes because if the patient dies then it's House's fault, but if she says no and House turns out to be right then it's her fault. She can't handle that, so she quits. Cuddy isn't exactly okay with a patient dying, but she also knows that House isn't always right and that he needs to be kept at least somewhat in check, and that if the patient dies because she said no then it's still House's fault for not finding better evidence. Good things usually happen, bad things sometimes happen.

    • @wolffang489
      @wolffang489 Місяць тому +1

      She did ask for something concrete. House couldn't follow through and she still okayed it. That was her point on why she quit.
