It a mesmerizing watch. PlayStation could pump out the 3D, but the Saturn had some of the most colorful and stunning games. Heck, it even has Cotton, from the "Cotton" series, as a secret unit as well. So yeah, "Izuna" is involved in a grand total of four games, two of their own and crossover-ed into two others.

For real. I'm not super into beat-em-ups but this game being the first Rare game produced under Microsoft really feels like the conversation around the actual game itself took a nose-dive and honestly feels underappreciated. Can't believe the buyout is the only thing I've ever heard surrounding this game. Good ol' Rareware humor and a very great flow of different area's. Every new area You visit feels like the logical next area to visit. Kitchen > Freezer > Dumpster outside area (I don't know what You call it) and enemy variety I also find interesting with Mummies that are invulnerable to all types of damage except fire. They create a lot of interesting scenarios around these gimmicks and then You got this Wacky Races "D!ck Dastardly" lookin' villain giving You these random feeling circumstances to work with while giving a goofy chuckle. Haven't watched the whole game but I really enjoyed what I had seen of it :)
I remember buying it at Gamestop when the damn stickers were on the art cover. Didn't play it often but it was a very worthy entry for Rare considering Microsoft hasn't done much with the company since Kameo.
The moment I saw the animation of Musashi Samurai Legend the first thing that came to mind was "This feels like Studio Trigger's animation" and sure enough I was right. Gainax/Trigger animations are too cartoonish (or whatever word that would describe it) and have insane fights that you can tell it's them
It's kinda of a shame that the last game isn't all that great but the visuals, the 2D opening, the music as well is just so cool. So with that, I forgive it for it is due to the stylish art style despite what the gameplay is like. Likely will never happen but Musashi Samurai Legend is one of those games that should have some sorta remake perhaps.
@Ahmed Malaki agreed kinda wish that was the norm to remake games that have the chance to be good But I guess there's more to it of why popular games get remade and so on
I have a cousin who had Musashi as a demo disk that came with other demos. I got a nostalgia blast just looking at the main character down slash and seeing the enemy design.
I first learned about Izuna through G4's review. They did a few skits with an unemployed ninja that kept trying to find a new job but also kept killing his employer out of frustration
The people behind Splosion Man and The Maw made Comic Jumper... it's not really a comix zone game, but it might be the closest there'll be, and I remember having some fun with it in the times of Summer of Arcade (Summer of Arcade could probably fill one of your video series about weird games)
I remember seeing Izuna 1 and 2 on the shelf at GameStop when I was a kid. I was going to get both but the employee convinced my mom to only let me get 2. Years later I decided I still wanted the first one only to realize it goes for a hefty price on the second hand market. I will forever curse that GameStop lady
This was some great fun, I definitely found Tempo and Comix Zone a highlight for me, I never heard of Tempo before this video and Comix Zone is a legend of a game for it's visuals alone and it's a crime it never got a sequel or a spiritual successor to it's style both Gameplay and Presentation wise and also the Legend of the Unemployed Ninja is pretty cool, haven't played it myself, but hear a lot of good things about it.
Never have I found out something existed that sounded amazing then immediately be disappointed. An intro directed by Imaishi, my favorite anime director of all time who made Gurren my fave anime ever, and made by Square Soft, my favorite game company, with designs by Nomura, one of my fave designers who made my 2 fave series KH and FF? How have I never heard of this game literally made for me??? Oh thats why
I don't believe Rayman Legends had a dynamic score (in the way you referenced it). The music levels were rigidly structurered auto~scrollers so if you didn't adapt to the music you just died. The music never adapted to you. It was all just a glorified music~themed rollercoaster.
Yeah I guess I phrased that poorly. Really Sackboy's Big Adventure's music stages would fit as a better example since you can go at your own pace and it's not on rails.
Honestly i actually kind of wish Tempo would get a comeback, i really think he's one of those characters from the 90s who was in a shitty game once but absolutely deserves another chance in the modern day with how much video game standards have changed, he was made in an incredibly experimental time and thus practically didn't stand a chance, but if they where to try with him again today now that people know how to make video games, i wouldn't mind at all, i like this funky little cricket.
Tempo actually had a second game, on the Saturn and of course left in Japan. It is better in everyway than the first game. I really like the Art of both Tempo games but the first game is kind of basic.
I was also subscribed to Nintendo Power around that time but never followed through with the games. Glad I can rely on you to show me what they were really about, 15 years later lmao
Holy shit! I remember playing Brave Fencer Musashi on ps1 and for the past 10 years i've been unable to remember the name of the game. You helped me solve a 10 year old personal mystery. I remember it was awesome. And I only played the demo so it was difficult to remember the name.
I really dug Izuna. I never finished the games, but I found the games charming. The game's character designer Yoshida On had an OC named Bikko. She's an amputee musician who doesn't let her lack of a leg and an eye bother her. Her design was cool.
With the "HD Remake/Remaster" kick Square Enix has been on over the years, I feel like a Brave Fencer Musashi revival is only a matter of time at this point. It's such a cool, cute, and endearing game (with a fun soundtrack and English dub to boot!) that it's such a shame that there's no modern way to play it outside of having a Japanese PSN account. That said, SE did post a UA-cam video acknowledging its 20th anniversary back in 2018, so mayyyyyyybe there might be a surprise in store for its 25th in 2023? If nothing else, for anyone reading this comment, do check out the OST! That game might be my earliest memory of a leitmotif before even understanding what a leitmotif was.
Really? I don’t see it, not to say the game is bad, it’s awesome. It’s just not something I would see getting an Hd Remaster, mainly for the fact that it’s been years since I last heard anyone really talk about unless you search for discussion. And maybe because of “Samurai Legend” just not being as good as the original.
@@MultiBoxingKid I only assume it's gonna happen eventually, considering SE seems to be all about appealing to niche audiences and retro-style games as of late. If a game like Live-A-Live (seldom talked about, released only in Japan, apparently didnt perform too well originally) can get an HD remake and global release, I dont think BF Musashi is too far outside the real of possibility.
I think that "backpack" is like a single square representation of the full set of internal organs; lungs, intestines and such. It is just in a neat little cube I guess
Comix Zone unlocked a memory. I distinctly remember playing it on my home computer along with lego island! I didn't beat either and only vaguely remember fighting the snot monsters. 10/10 video thanks for helping me remember.
Square Enix funny enough went to go with Japan's edgy and eccentric aesthetics at the time with the NItro+ guys (hyper edgy visual novels with cute girls like Saya no Uta and Fate/Zero, also their total tonal whiplash mascot Super Sonico) with Gunslinger Stratos. Which even actually was innovative by making it a clean hybrid arena fighter and arena shooter where you would lock on, but only your vision of the opponent, you had to aim at their center mass to not miss. And the gun controller in arcades was something from Power Rangers where you had dual hand cannons that could be locked horizontally and vertically. Becoming punt shotguns, KILLSAT laser pointers, nuclear bazookas, homing drones, etc. Alas, it never came here in overseas outside Round 1 entertainment centers, interest dropped competitively as no new content came, and the attempt to make it a high concept PC title was left in alpha test. So even its spiritual Wiimote fighter sequel Magician's Dead was left to abandonware and converted to spare fighting game monitors and arcade sticks, and the developer is now the My Hero Academia content farm.
Okay, thank you for including Izuna. My college roommate got that way back when and it's occasionally popped into my head but I could never remember the name.
I've been a fan since I was a little dweeb in late middle school - early high school and I'm glad that you're still consistent and have improved so much. Have a good day or night or existential pondering dude
That Izuna quote, 'Rest assured, their friendship is purely platonic', reminded me of that line from YGO Season Zero Abridged: "Let's have sex later. As FRIENDS Yugi! Geez!!"
It's nice to know with enough budget an indie studio today can pull off the aesthetic they want and provide good gameplay at the same time. The 2000's felt like it's was either/or in most cases, which is why we get so many of these lost media gems. Most of which were forgotten as a consequence of having bland or disappointing gameplay loops. Obviously a few managed to incorporate both, but that was usually because the console's parent company sank a bunch of money into it, and the developers were often veterans from the previous console era (Insomniac from Spyro, ND from Crash, Sucker Punch from that one game in 1999, etc.)
I loved Izuna on the DS, it was so massively hard but I did beat the first game and the sequel was more forgiving and playable (but still difficult, I didn't have the patience to finish this one despite that)
I remember as a kid I was so infatuated with the part in the intro scene of Motor Toon where the lady is in the shower. It used to make my mom laugh so hard sitting there watching me as I waited at the title screen for the intro to play over and over again. I was so young so I had no idea what I was watching, I just liked it lmao
Gun Loco looks like if you put Fortnite in a blender with Team Fortress 2, Devil’s Third, Gears of War, Saints Row and Anarchy Reigns, and was written by Tim and Eric
Izuna also had a sequel and appeared as a playable character in a DS fighting game called Windy x Windam. Never heard of Windy x Windam? That's because the US release was only sold in online retailers and had almost no advertising. Frankly, I'm surprised it got a US release at all.
Oh wow, gameplay-wise a bunch of stuff shown and mentioned in Izuna happens in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon lol. I can't remember if Atlus worked on that too or not. ChunSoft or something I think, but the general design and dungeon layout and how enemies move and gang up on you and the dang npc moving everytime you wanna talk to them...
Izuna follows the Mystery Dungeon formula that Chunsoft established long before Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It first started as a Dragon Quest spinoff in 1993 and has had alot of crossover with other series including Pokemon and Final Fantasy. Atlus only published Izuna 1 and 2 in the west but they did eventually work with Chunsoft to develop a Mystery Dungeon spinoff of one of Atlus' series, Etrian Mystery Dungeon
As a middle school student in the late 2000s I read Nintendo Power and had never seen anything so blatantly sexual in there as the preview of Izuna, so reading the suggestive jokes and seeing that pic of her and her “platonic” friend made me feel like I was getting hit on by a teacher lmao
Hey Pan, remember Blazing Samurai? Yeah it’s actually a real film now and now out of development hell. Though it’s now called “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank”. You going to talk about it in……..7 years?
I vaguely remember titles as I read from various gaming magazines. That toon racing game looks great, with more refininging, Comix Zone, a classic I played at an Atgames port of, and I do enjoyed the look & asthethic of Samurai Legend, even if the game is incredibly slogging.
Postal brain damaged came out and I love it way more than should be considered healthy. It plays so well and the arr direction is very strong, and it has way too many memes to count but reshapes them into new, unique forms. The entire game is such a fever dream, which makes sense because that's literally the story. Also, there's some romhacks that I've been playing lately. I recently found one that turns super Mario bros 2 USA into the yellow submarine, allowing you to play as all four members of the Beatles, and the game's soundtrack is just Beatles songs done on nes hardware, it's such a treat.
I know you’ve been wanting to cover Comix Zone for the longest time so it was satisfying to see you cover it here. Might be some of your best editing yet
That was great! If you ever do more of these, look into the PS2 game "PK: Out of the Shadows" starring Donald Duck's famous (out of the US) alter ego, PK. Also, Love Hina ruined my life too brother...
I'm glad I'm randomly seeing more Izuna around, I remember grabbing the first game around it's release and loved it so much that even though I never got farther that two areas, I still grabbed the sequel on the day it came out this game was hard
Tempo on the 32X also had score-based endings, with the highest rank ending being Tempo and Katy winning a house and subsequently starting a family together. Though, personally, my favorite ending is the island vacation one.
izuna in the thumbnail, this gon be good 👀 there are a LOT of funky obscure DS games, it's one of my favorite consoles for this reason! for a future video, "feel the magic XY/XX" and its sequel "rub rabbits" might be fun to go over! fun aesthetic and surprisingly adult humor at times, they're awesome games
You know what could Save the Musashi Reboot? Making it an Anime Fighting Game, similar to Guilty Gear obviously with the Ps2 Intro Style instead of the KH Illustrator, i think it fits better
Oh, I LOVED Comix Zone growing up, but then lost it during multiple moves! I genuinely thought it was a fever dream until I found it years later on one of those Sega Genesis collection games. Lol.
Wow, the disparity between the Musashi intro and the game is staggering. It was definitely possible to make a game as cool as that animation in the early 2000s. What the hell, Square?!
@@RebelTaxi Thanks man. My name’s Alden Davis but you can credit my UA-cam name if you want. It's been 2 years, but Pan, if you're reading this, drop that playlist on youtube.
“This is for assigned men who ain’t afraid to be ninja girls. HRT is the way to be!”
Only Pan could possibly deliver a line like that.
i can't believe that this is a real line lol
It's kinda of a shame that the last game isn't all that great but the visuals, the 2D opening, the music as well is just so cool. So with that, I forgive it for it is due to the stylish art style despite what the gameplay is like. Likely will never happen but Musashi Samurai Legend is one of those games that should have some sorta remake perhaps.
Seriously, the opening is textbook Gainax/Trigger, I would've bought it off of that alone.
@@SuspiciousScout I would of been perfect for a anime series or something.
@Ahmed Malaki Yeah I kinda wish at times games that weren't so great are given a second chance to be better.
@Ahmed Malaki agreed kinda wish that was the norm to remake games that have the chance to be good
But I guess there's more to it of why popular games get remade and so on
Nobody expected a Panty and Stocking Season 2 and yet...
“Stop getting drunk and start tweaking on heroin instead”
- Pan
I can't believe they turned sol badguy into a twink and he's still a badass
Twink Badguy
Soon as I saw Izuna I was like "Oh, the hot ninja from the Nintendo Power ad!"
The people behind Splosion Man and The Maw made Comic Jumper... it's not really a comix zone game, but it might be the closest there'll be, and I remember having some fun with it in the times of Summer of Arcade (Summer of Arcade could probably fill one of your video series about weird games)
It's better than Comix Zone cause it's not a poorly designed mess
Tempo is kind of boring, but it's easy to emulate. It's graphics make it stand out. However there's a second game on the Saturn that is way better.
Kinda like Buck bumble
Tempo actually had a second game, on the Saturn and of course left in Japan. It is better in everyway than the first game. I really like the Art of both Tempo games but the first game is kind of basic.
Izuna is a phenomenal game that more people need to talk about. Its _sequel,_ though- hoo boy, they doubled up on everything. It's even better.
There's a new Izuna game in the works.
Tempo is so damn FUNKY, love him!! Too bad his game could probably give someone a seizure.
Love the Strange Colorful Games series!
If you are into emulation at all check out Tempo on the Saturn. It's way better than the first game. It was never released in America.
Ah I still remember watching Pan’s play through of Comix Zone years ago on the RebelTaxi Megadrive channel. Oh the memories.
Fun fact: Musashi is voiced by everyone's favorite Poochie-type reploid, Axl.
Wait, they're drawn by the same artist? No wonder I found her design so appealing! That man can create the coolest chicks you'll ever see.
Pan I thought you were taking a break this month and instead we get the gift of an amazing video, Thank you so much truly!!
I really loved Brave Fencer Musashi. I played the demo so much, finally played it at my friend's house later. Fun game.
To this day, I could never complete Comix Zone. Hell, I don't even know what the game's ending looks like.
Rebel taxi videos always pair well with Lunch or dinner. Never brekfast tho....
true that! i also always feel the urge to get a six pack of pepsi before watching, it just feels right.
Why not breakfast?
@@wisconsinking323 we don't talk about breakfast...
@@ablur5129 Is this a reference to something?
@@wisconsinking323 No. I am just insane.
I thought I saw Izuna in your tweet yesterday you made for the thumbnail, God I miss those games
Geez!!"
These videos are such a mood with those transitions.
I loved Izuna on the DS, it was so massively hard but I did beat the first game and the sequel was more forgiving and playable (but still difficult, I didn't have the patience to finish this one despite that)
"this is for assigned men who want to be ninja girls. HRT is the way to be" Panpizza 8:47
Oh man! I remembered Comix Zone! I never could get through that game. I need to replay that game someday. Anyway, awesome video!
She was also in a Strategy RPG on the DS, Rondo of Swords.
@@ShadowWolfRising Oh yeah, I had completely forgotten about that game's existence.
@@TheDinoKitteh where on his Twitter?
On Twitter i think, he said that he now has to talk about it because of his past video on it.
I vaguely remember titles as I read from various gaming magazines.
That toon racing game looks great, with more refininging, Comix Zone, a classic I played at an Atgames port of, and I do enjoyed the look & asthethic of Samurai Legend, even if the game is incredibly slogging.
Eww... Atgames.
Vib-Ribbon for PS1, it's sequel for PS2, Vib-Ripple and it's spin-off Mojib-Ribbon for PS2 are all good choices
Ok the animation in Tempo is INCREDIBLE, for 1995 they went all out!
Did he ever talk about viva pinata? That was a great colorful game!
I love this channel; it make me feel like I'm back in the early 00's. The short commercials he adds to the videos is the best too.
That was great! If you ever do more of these, look into the PS2 game "PK: Out of the Shadows" starring Donald Duck's famous (out of the US) alter ego, PK.
Also, Love Hina ruined my life too brother...
yeah, pk gets none of the respect it's owned
Man, how many alter egos does Donald have ? There's also Maui Mallard and Cold Shadow.
Musashi Samurai Legend really needed to take lessons from Dynasty Warriors...
Also, good lord, his hands are HUGE.
I love how I’m getting old school toonami vibes from this. Because holy shit, I’m getting a whole lot of nostalgia
I'm glad I'm randomly seeing more Izuna around, I remember grabbing the first game around it's release and loved it so much that even though I never got farther that two areas, I still grabbed the sequel on the day it came out
this game was hard
I love these videos for those brief moments when Pan becomes the Surly Electronic Entertainment Connoisseur
I loved Musashi, both of them. I still play it at least once a year. I don't care if most people didn't like the PS2 game, I like it
6:00 Bro, did you just say "Love Hyena?" I'm never not calling it that now. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I like how your slick video style keeps on getting even better
Just wait until Gun Loco becomes canon in Kingdom Hearts 4.
I missed you, man. Hope everything is fine with the production of your pilot.
Loved the video, the designs for Musashi and Comix Zone were very cool. The editing for this video was also fun
I read about the cancellation of Gun Loco once, and it's been stuck in my head ever since!
i love the vibe of your videos so much it's like a mix of looking through a cool looking video game menu and watching tv
Tempo on the 32X also had score-based endings, with the highest rank ending being Tempo and Katy winning a house and subsequently starting a family together. Though, personally, my favorite ending is the island vacation one.
Your editing skills are amazing.
Holy shit those sprite animation for tempo are so fucking smooth
izuna in the thumbnail, this gon be good 👀
there are a LOT of funky obscure DS games, it's one of my favorite consoles for this reason! for a future video, "feel the magic XY/XX" and its sequel "rub rabbits" might be fun to go over! fun aesthetic and surprisingly adult humor at times, they're awesome games
I love how whenever game devs have to come up with wacky proportions for a black character they always make them look like old pickaninnys
Frickin A man that pause at 3:20 "wait a minute" had me cracking up
"Freaking Shaman King-lookin' ass" Good to know I'm not the only one who saw a Yoh Asakura air to Musashi.
Lol.
Man, that Musashi game looks great in every way until you see the combat, what a bummer that they botched the most important part.
Such an exhausting part of the game. Didn't even make the game fun or entertaining.
Can't believe you've done 11 of these! Love this series!
Speaking of 'Copy Mechanic" the obscure-enough Threads of Fate lets you copy monsters you kill. You are basically an Animorph.
Wow, the disparity between the Musashi intro and the game is staggering. It was definitely possible to make a game as cool as that animation in the early 2000s. What the hell, Square?!
im obsessed with pan's style of transitions and editing. are there any games/media that utilize this style? shits like pure eyecandy to me
Street Fighter Alpha 3
A lot of futuristic racers in the PS1 or 2 era like Wipeout or Rollcage 2. Crossniq+

I'm hearing the description of Izuna and all I can think is... "Oh, so it's Azure Dreams."
Aw, I never got past level 2 in Comic Zone.
The moment I saw the logo for Musashi, I was hoping it'd be Brave Fencer for ps1.
