John K writing an episode about how great he is, only for him to get fired and his staff rewrite it into a big "fuck you" might actually be one of the funniest things I've heard.

Artist and cofounder of Radio Comix Elin Winkler once gave me advice in the same league as the plot of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. "Your dream project doesn't matter. All that ever matters is finished pages." At first, as an artist fresh out of leaving my full time job and moving into full time commissioned art, it kinda felt less like advice at the time and more like a "give up, kid" sort of message. But as time wore on, I realized that she meant it as "Your dream project can't ever be complete if you can't keep yourself afloat, so keep creating and make your dream project as best you can on the side." Now I've never properly come up with a dream project I truly wanted to make, but knowing full well that all that matters is finished pages motivates me to continue regardless.
I find it interesting how most of the kids cartoons episodes portray the job as a fucking nightmare whereas the adult ones are like a dream, stress free job
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 Not to mention kids cartoons/properties are a LOT more restrictive in what the studio will do, meaning the job is much more stressful (Give a peek to SEGA's Sonic mandates from recent years as an example)
Not really, no. Having a tall, short, and in-between character, wacky expressions, and one that also likes money is definitely not the anime equivalent. The dynamic is entirely different, the tone is entirely different, and the message is entirely different. It was just a silly meme to say that, hopefully nobody actually believed that (none of them are Ed, for example).

John K is the definition of pathetic. The amount of eye rolls the artists who have had to listen to his shit over the years would be enough to power 3 major cities for 200 years.
@@Lozzomatic It is likely aracadtic as John does not even think of himself. He would ocassionaly cringe on a few parts of directing and storyboarding in seasoms 1 of Ren and Stimpy.

There is an episode of Sailor Moon I watched a few months ago that featured a character named Lori working on the upcoming Sailor V film, but was criticized for her drawings being less than stellar. In desperate hope for more pencils to use, she decides to use some from her friend, with the last one remaining being charged by Nephilite's dark matter. Throughout the rest of the episode, after completing some animations, Lori plans on destroying Sailor V at the end of the film in favor of making her own studio. She was luckily turned back to normal at the end thanks to the Sailor Scouts destroying the Gemini Warriors and the Sailor V film got a happy ending.
Stimpy's cartoon show was originally supposed to be about how cartoonists and generally people in show production get abused and mistreated by networks and executives. These problems still exist the industry. In my opinion the true middle finger to John K is Reverend Jack, an episode that only has jokes/injokes about him.
Animation Runner Kuromi is a great two episode OVA about anime production. Aoi Honoo, or Blue Blazes, is about a guy who went to college with the Studio Gainax founders (Evangelion, Daicon, FLCL, Gurren Lagann) and is one the most anime looking live action show I've ever seen. Very relatable for any procrastinators out there.
These kind of episodes get a lot more entertaining if you’ve actually worked in animation yourself. In fact: The Tiny Toons “Animaniacs” episode was literally my first education on how cartoons are made.
Has anyone else seen the Big City Greens episode where Cricket and Tilly get to see how their favourite show is animated? Its also a take that to the final season of Game of Thrones and its one of my fave episodes.
4:43 "this is just ugly for ugly sake" this is just john k talking out of his ass, stimpy looks so grotesque there to emphasize how exhausted and burnt out he is. can't believe he's really trying to act like he wouldnt have done that if he had gotten to actually produce the episode lol
Also if u watch his more recent animations (like his Simpsons couch gags or cans without labels) he does the “weirdness/ugliness for no apparent reason” thing all the time so yeah he’s full of shit lol
Eizouken I think captures the essence and magic of working on an animation project as a passion. It's wholesome, and has a great dynamic and balance to the cast that makes it feel so genuine.
Not gonna lie the staff behind Akira are my favorite example for an animation crew going through hell to make something. It's just admirable even if you don't do anything art related, the amount of detail you see them putting in just amazes me every time and inspires me as an artist. Your vid has a lot to appreciate, great job Pan.
Eizouken is great and it's one of my favorite animes from last year, the opening is is great and the song is catchy, also, the music video of Easy Breezy is very creative and references the anime, but If I love the anime is thanks to it's imaginative scenery when the mc talk about their projects and the style of the show radically changes and makes you feel like amazing about what are they talking about.
Very awesome video. a lot of these shows with these types of episodes I loved as a kid. it made me appreciate animation and made me wanna be a Voice Actor. If you got the chance, watch Sgt Frog's episode on how they want to make a cartoon to take over earth (Pekopond)
@@KidMisfit Man, now I realize how much I miss the series. I've never been able to find translations of the manga past a certain volume, and the anime just stopped.
If these were truly accurate to today's animation, there should be at least one episode where the cartoonist has to deal with the pilot either being marked as "for kids", age restricted, or struck down by Sony Music Entertainment for having three seconds of a copyrighted song.
The only one I think needs an honorable mention is the episode of South Park where the kids try to save christmas and mr Hankey by making a cartoon, and the kids end up making 'The Spirit Of Christmas' aka the south park short that served as unofficial pilot.
I didn’t realize the manga creator had a UA-cam account until fairly recently. Which is rather weird for me, as I usually hear about that info first. Maybe someday, when it gets more volumes out. Because from what I’ve seen, catching up with adapting a still running manga can get pretty weird.
Idk if anyone has ever told you, but your transitions are really cool, the shot of the parking lot was a nice breath of fresh air. You also go into your ads really smoothly without shoehorning it in lyke most youtubers I've seen do. Kudos ma dude
Here are some recommendations if you visit this topic again: - *Otaku no Video* - one of the earliest works by Gainax, there's a part of the story where the characters basically create their own OVA from their basement, using multiple VCR's to copy the footage (it was the 80's) - *Animation Runner Kuromi* - a new hire at an anime studio is suddenly put in charge (the actual studio head is hospitalized and her coworkers all suck at their jobs) - *The Reluctant Dragon* - made by Disney in the 1940's as a propaganda piece during the infamous animators' strike, it's notable for having Donald Duck's original VA on-screen and hearing Walt Disney prior to decades of smoking - *Seiyu's Life* - technically the series is more about voice acting than animation, but it's still really interesting, especially since a lot of notable Japanese voice actors make guest appearances as themselves (Rie Kugimiya for the win!!!)
I was in the kitchen getting tape for my sketchbook while you were talking about Mr. Pickles, and it reminded me of that time in my one and only semester of art school when my teacher told us of the time they had this guy who would buy coffee for the animators to draw continuously while on drugs, and it's because they saw him draw rats in his spare time. And that's how a certain animated film about a rat who wanted to become a chef came to life.
There was one episode of Wander Over Yonder in season 2 where Lord Hater tries to make a cartoon making him more badass villain he actually is and the whole thing turns out to be a big parody of He-Man cartoon with a couple of meta jokes on making cartoons. ("ANIMATION IS SO HARD!!! PEOPLE WHO DO THIS FOR A LIVING DESERVE MORE CREDIT AND RESPECT!!!")
slight correction on Shirobako. They DONT work together, and that's pretty much the main arc of the girls. Them coming together to work at the same studio.
A part of my soul dies every time I see that scene from Paranoia Agent where the clueless production manager folds up the background artist's painting.
Keep your hands off Eizouken is a show that I feel everyone should watch despite being about anime cos it's a show that really inspires you to do what you love as well as educate you on the obstacles that come with it. Especially for anyone who's interested in the creative fields or someone who's burnt out doing something they may enjoy, I guarantee you watching this show will ignite a spark of passion in you to go and achieve the goals you desire. Plus it's just fun and beautiful as all hell.
Watching episodes like this as a kid made me want to make a cartoon of my own so badly. Despite constantly being shown how stressful and hard it was, I just wanted to do it more
the kirby anime is such an underrated gem, i would definitely recommend checking out the japanese dub of some other episodes! eizouken is one of my favourite anime of all time. its such a gorgeous and charming show. i didnt know much about the others mentioned, but it was really interesting to see each episode's perspective on the process! EDIT: i really appreciate the proper use of rachel's name, even if shes just a cartoon character it makes me feel validated as a trans person. thanks rebel!
Animators is one of the few fields motivated by passion and enthusiasm for the craft and not mostly money. Too bad they usually get taken advantage of because of it. I am so glad that the internet has made a boom in personal animators.
The funny thing with that Kirby episode is that if you look at many of the anime that came out during the 50's and 60's, this actually doesn't look that much different.
19:25-19:33, "Secret Mountain Fort Awesome": 4 wons at various award festivals (2 at Primetime Emmy, 1 at Annies and 1 at Annecy) plus 2 nominations only at Annies. In other words were, and still today it is, one of the most underrated cartoons of all time (along with "Uncle Grandpa").
Oh shit, you slapped my nostalgia button hard with that opening of Paranoya Agent! I remember Lil Slugger and that dog...but for the life of me, that show just never held my attention long enough and seemed too weird to me, lol. Granted, it also had massive shoes to fill as Inuyasha reigned supreme to all anime during that era for me and if it wasn't cute dog boys and hot demon men, I only gave it a courtesy interest. But wow...damn, it's fun to be reminded of shows you've forgotten :)
When I watched the first episode of Eizouken, it actually inspired me to draw something. Now, I'd been drawing at that point, I continue to draw, and I will always draw, but I tend to be rather lazy and will often go long stretches without even opening up my sketchbook. But that first episode was so full of passion for animation and art that I just really wanted to draw, and I did (I don't remember what it was I drew). It really felt like a piping hot, delicious cup of coffee for my creative motivation.
That’s practically how I feel about Eizouken. Except their film is a stand-alone live-action one. Maybe someday there’ll be more animated Eizouken stuff. Probably when there are more manga volumes out. As there are apparently around 6 volumes at the moment, and from what I’ve heard anime crew’s tend to not like catching up with the source material they’re adapting.
For the record, a layout artist is the one who visually sets up scenes. They design the negative space (ie, backgrounds) where the character is going to act and where in that space the character is going to be/how they'll look. Think of it like blocking in theater or live action: you have you set and you have your marks within the set that the actor is supposed to hit. Layout is the animation version of that.
3:16 I’m going to be honest, I wouldn’t mind if the Ren and Stimpy reboot had a small bit that took a shot at John K. The creep deserves it. 5:10 Oh man, I remember watching the show last year when it was on Toonami. 8:13 To be honest, there’s potential in an Animaniacs and Tiny Toons crossover show where the siblings are sent to Acme Looniversity with Pinky and the Brain becoming Class pets. 13:38 I wonder how the Angry Dad shorts would fare today.. then again Modern Simpsons might have answered that already 14:01 This was the episode that got a renanimated collab a while back. I would really love to see another shot at giving Kirby another cartoon. Especially with all the characters that have appeared. You could do so much with them like an adaptation of the games or original stories like with the anime. 14:05 I would personally love to see you take a look at modern Kirby lore, it gets genuinely nuts at times. 16:43 It’d be nice for this show to be put on streaming like Peacock or Netflix. 19:33 Not true. I have watched that show too. Also what a trip for Browngardt to go from Uncle Grandpa which got screwed over to doing the Looney Tunes cartoons on HBO Max. Also heard he guest starred on Spongebob. 21:52 You could also be late on any homework you have. 23:34 Could you imagine being the crew from both Shiro Bako and Eizouken and seeing the massive success that is, Wacky Deli? 25:11 In fact, let’s be happy the Shiro Bako and Eizouken characters aren’t going to be dealing with John K.
thanks for reminding me how terrible the entertainment industry really is Hollywood: pedos games: crunch and low pay music: all the money goes to the studios animation: more crunch and low pay
I watched your video a few hours ago and it turned out great. Cartoon production episodes are my favorite types of episode on how you make the stuff. I'm actually glad I gave you my list a while back. I hope there's more of it from my list like the Big City Greens episode "Animation Abomination", and just that one live action drama, Blue Blazer. I'm glad you mentioned Kirby reanimated cause there's a lot of reanimated collabs after the very first one back in 2014. Your video has finally lifted my mood to finish my first story time animation and making more animations for this fall. Thank you. :)
I was hoping to see the Paranoia Agent episode mentioned in the video, it was a pretty stand-out episode of the series focusing on many characters through the whole team of animators rather than just one or two tormented people. It was also a pretty great insight into how many animation studios function.
I think you oversimplified Shirobako. The girls just start working together from the middle to the end of the second season. In the beginning there are five girls, two work at the same studio, other is still in uni, other is a voice actor but only gets trash roles, and the one that works with 3D keeps modelling car wheels for a game company. Yeah, the explanations are lengthy and it is kinda depressing at times, but certainly one of the best explanations of the japanese animation industry. But it's full of references that only industry savvy people will recognize, like in one of the last episodes of the first cour, the main character meets Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion creator).
6:35 Oh GAWD... I remember doing a group project in mid school that I drew a background for this little puppet play. I gave it to the other kid on the project since we were going for lunch... unfortunately he folded my damn background and had some points off for "unprofessional/mishandled production". Hearing that crunch was like a ptsd flashback. NEVER HAND YOUR WORK TO LESSER RESPONSIBLE PROJECT TEAMMATES. And keep it in portfolio bags.
I always felt like there should be more film and tv shows (especially live action) about the animation process. I think it would be really cool if they were to make a TV miniseries about animator Richard Williams and his process to make The Thief and the Cobbler with the same amount of money and resources used to make other shows like The Queen’s Gambit or Chernobyl. So yeah, Netflix or HBO or whoever else is listening, I’m willing to pitch to you this series and sell out for money
Dude, the "making a crtoon in a cartoon" episode were the BEST. Some of my favorite shows always had one, especially rocko's modern life, Kirby, and a few others, nice video!
If you were one of the people that got ripped off by his Kickstarter he had a few years back you probably get it. Sure Pan has already covered this before during adult party cartoon review or something. If you seen BlameitonJorge documentary on it, the joke was explained a bit on other messy things that went on in his life that may warrant why we have these jokes. It’s been revived from the dead for a bit because a meme joke for the newest arena style brawler game. Nicktoons all star brawl, jokes John K gonna be too op and you need an ambulance etc on Reddit and 4 Chan and sections of UA-cam comments.
I came to this honestly cause Eizouken is a recent fav oh mine. The crazy dream like creative sequences combined the the really stronger and wacky dynamic of the main cast and town really pull together this great look and explanation of the minds and struggles of the industry without feeling like its to put off others from going into it from such a negative outlook.
The still image of the jar of mayo is an absolute cartoon classic and I’m glad you brought up such great topic when it comes to making cartoons. But I’m surprised that you even managed to bring up Kirby, shirobako and eizouken in this video, cuz these shows are an absolute blast to watch imo! Keep it up!
You should've mentioned to the sequel episode to the Kirby one (episode 89), where Nightmare introduces three otakus to DDD, and they end up making a anime girl version of Tiff. Oh also a fake Walt Disney is the villain of the episode.
Another honorable mention for animation episodes is episode 33 of Sgt Frog: "The Episode We Wanted to Call Tiny Toons or Animaniacs, But Those Were Already Taken"

I feel I really dodged a bullet by never getting into/attached-to that one myself, yeah, I'm happy to keep my only intake of that show being the Marco _fanart_ I see online.
Artist and cofounder of Radio Comix Elin Winkler once gave me advice in the same league as the plot of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken.
"Your dream project doesn't matter. All that ever matters is finished pages."
At first, as an artist fresh out of leaving my full time job and moving into full time commissioned art, it kinda felt less like advice at the time and more like a "give up, kid" sort of message.
But as time wore on, I realized that she meant it as "Your dream project can't ever be complete if you can't keep yourself afloat, so keep creating and make your dream project as best you can on the side."
Now I've never properly come up with a dream project I truly wanted to make, but knowing full well that all that matters is finished pages motivates me to continue regardless.
I find it interesting how most of the kids cartoons episodes portray the job as a fucking nightmare whereas the adult ones are like a dream, stress free job
It’s like biting the hand that feeds them. If you’re saying making cartoons is a nightmare job, then why are you making cartoons?
@@Poever Because it’s usually all they got. They can either quit or ease the pain by poking fun of the system.
@@Poever Sunk cost fallacy, maybe?
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 Not to mention kids cartoons/properties are a LOT more restrictive in what the studio will do, meaning the job is much more stressful (Give a peek to SEGA's Sonic mandates from recent years as an example)
@@Poever Because 1) Its just a joke 2) poking fun at yourself can be funny. The Simpsons and Family Guy bash Fox.
Someone once told me “Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken,” was the anime equivalent of Ed Edd n Eddy, and I mean…they’re not entirely off.
@@klg9549 yeah its about 3 girls banding together for one passion project whereas the other show is about 3 boys banding together for several money making schemes
Eizouken is one of my favorite anime of all time, and it's extremely inspiring for someone who wants to pursue animation like myself.
same here! i don't really watch anime that much because i usually lose interest but i'm in love with this series because i love so many things about it.
The Simpsons shitting on Ren and Stimpy made me laugh way harder than it realistically should have.
I didn't get that when I was younger... now I understand lol
It was too good genuinely made me laugh
Even back then Matt Groening knew that John K was a douchebag
Realistically, you should've been laughing your ass off for an hour because that was hilarious, so it's impressive you laughed harder than that
@@SnowpawShaw Thanks I've been working on my laughing gimmick.

I'm just messing with you. I think you mean college. 😉
Also good luck with your courses.

@Shin Shaman it is?
you didn’t mention the second cartoon making episode of the kirby anime where they hire otakus to make a cartoon and they make a tiff anime by stalking her
I wonder why. Anime Tiff with boobas
@Shin Shaman checks out
Only two of the girls in Shirobako work at animation studios, one is a production manager and the other is auditioning to be a voice actress. The other three friends found other jobs
That John K audio commentary is legitimately pathetic
John K is the definition of pathetic. The amount of eye rolls the artists who have had to listen to his shit over the years would be enough to power 3 major cities for 200 years.
@Shin Shaman I really really hope you're kidding, dear fucking God
@@Lozzomatic It is likely aracadtic as John does not even think of himself. He would ocassionaly cringe on a few parts of directing and storyboarding in seasoms 1 of Ren and Stimpy.
Wait until you listen to his Sven Hoek commentary, which included one of his future accusers. Yikes.
@@inovakovsky I heard a clip from it where he was asking them if she - like how Sven had a ball of used band aids he'd collected over the years - had a collection of err...'women's sanitary products' . Yikes is a pretty accurate description and I don't want to hear much more
Animation is so hard. People who do this for a living deserve more credit and respect
-Lord Hater
john k is absolutely SEETHING in that commentary
Aoi Honoo/Blue Blazes is that good shit!

That and the episode with a sequence boarded by Tilly. Man BCG's writing is absolute genius and criminally underrated
Cricket was so mean in that episode

this is just john k talking out of his ass, stimpy looks so grotesque there to emphasize how exhausted and burnt out he is. can't believe he's really trying to act like he wouldnt have done that if he had gotten to actually produce the episode lol
Also if u watch his more recent animations (like his Simpsons couch gags or cans without labels) he does the “weirdness/ugliness for no apparent reason” thing all the time so yeah he’s full of shit lol
Ironically I’ve heard that’s how some would describe the Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon. Which John K. was in charge of for the most part.
I like how Pan actually tried applying for animation positions and is making his own cartoon while telling you he's completely incompetent XD

Imagine the Ed boys teaching the viewers how an episode of Ed Edd n Eddy is made.
It's mostly Double D lecturing while Ed asks dumb questions/pitches outthere concepts and Eddy tries to monitize the whole thing.
Closest we’ve got to that at the moment is Eizouken.
(Was that too obvious?)
Knowing Pan he’ll no doubt talk about the best episode of Rocko, Wacky Deli.
im glad someone else appreciates wacky deli as much as i do
@Shin Shaman ok lol

If you got the chance, watch Sgt Frog's episode on how they want to make a cartoon to take over earth (Pekopond)

My favorite aspect about the episode is how they give up doing the animation themselves so they outsource the project to Korea lol

I would give my soul for Hands Off Eizouken season two! For now I just watch the manga creator's livestreams.
I didn’t realize the manga creator had a UA-cam account until fairly recently. Which is rather weird for me, as I usually hear about that info first.
Maybe someday, when it gets more volumes out. Because from what I’ve seen, catching up with adapting a still running manga can get pretty weird.

Here are some recommendations if you visit this topic again:
- *Otaku no Video* - one of the earliest works by Gainax, there's a part of the story where the characters basically create their own OVA from their basement, using multiple VCR's to copy the footage (it was the 80's)
- *Animation Runner Kuromi* - a new hire at an anime studio is suddenly put in charge (the actual studio head is hospitalized and her coworkers all suck at their jobs)
- *The Reluctant Dragon* - made by Disney in the 1940's as a propaganda piece during the infamous animators' strike, it's notable for having Donald Duck's original VA on-screen and hearing Walt Disney prior to decades of smoking
- *Seiyu's Life* - technically the series is more about voice acting than animation, but it's still really interesting, especially since a lot of notable Japanese voice actors make guest appearances as themselves (Rie Kugimiya for the win!!!)

Ratatoing?

There was one episode of Wander Over Yonder in season 2 where Lord Hater tries to make a cartoon making him more badass villain he actually is and the whole thing turns out to be a big parody of He-Man cartoon with a couple of meta jokes on making cartoons. slight correction on Shirobako.
A Cartoon about the process of making a Cartoon is one of the things I enjoy from the Meta Genre.
If you think about it every episode of Chalk Zone is about cartoons making cartoons
If only they had included a bit in that Ren & Stimpy episode about animation boss Ren hitting on a puppy.
Watching episodes like this as a kid made me want to make a cartoon of my own so badly. Despite constantly being shown how stressful and hard it was, I just wanted to do it more
Well. do it. just do it.

I’m so happy to see Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken get the attention it deserves.
Man, Eizouken is a beautiful love letter to animation.
It's the anime for those that like to watch the behind the scenes stuff for movies
Ren & Stimpy had the best episode about making a cartoon out of the bunch.
As the great philosopher Pusha T once said, 'If you know, you know'
Animators is one of the few fields motivated by passion and enthusiasm for the craft and not mostly money. Too bad they usually get taken advantage of because of it. I am so glad that the internet has made a boom in personal animators.
The funny thing with that Kirby episode is that if you look at many of the anime that came out during the 50's and 60's, this actually doesn't look that much different.
YO!! Paranoia Agent Opening waiting me up in the middle of the night. That memory is so fresh.
Given the rumors about CN Studios and the creative process on some of their shows, the monkeys throwing mud at the wall joke feels personal.
What rumors?
Oh man, Paranoia Agent. The episode with the trio of online chat members who meet up for the first time is still amazing.
3:45 thank god, I thought you were about to humanize him. Now I can go back to hating his guts.

Ah Shirobako, I can re-watch that many times and still enjoy it. Would love them to make a season 2 continuing after the movie.
Need to watch the movie still
That’s practically how I feel about Eizouken.
13:38 I wonder how the Angry Dad shorts would fare today.. then again Modern Simpsons might have answered that already
14:01 This was the episode that got a renanimated collab a while back.
Be honest, bro. How long have you been thinking about that crossover?

18:37 “I kid you not, he turns himself into a pickle...”
Called that Paranoia Agent segment. Love that episode.
That Ren and Stimpy episode would have been more accurate if it had Ren walking around the office with his underage girlfriend.
Fun fact! My high school counselor was actually the mom of the dude that made Mr pickles! She was proud of him but I could sense her disappointment!

I remember doing a group project in mid school that I drew a background for this little puppet play.

There are some documentaries like "Richard Williams and The Thief Who Never Gave Up ( 1982 )" and "Persistence Of Vision" :)
Dude, the "making a crtoon in a cartoon" episode were the BEST. Some of my favorite shows always had one, especially rocko's modern life, Kirby, and a few others, nice video!
The 90s : Aka the era were almost every animator at the time were making potshots at John K .
Who would get the joke though..
If you were one of the people that got ripped off by his Kickstarter he had a few years back you probably get it.
Sure Pan has already covered this before during adult party cartoon review or something.

I considered keep your hands of Eizouken one of the best anime of 2020
The still image of the jar of mayo is an absolute cartoon classic and I’m glad you brought up such great topic when it comes to making cartoons.
