Scenario 1 the planet gears are driven indirectly by the sun gear, which is driven by the motor. Scenario 2 the sun gear is locked and not driven by the motor, the motor instead goes directly to the planetary gear hub, which turns the ring gear at a greater than 1:1 ratio. It's now spinning faster than the crank itself, so it's called overdrive.
