In this video, we break down the inner workings of an open differential, one of the most common types found in vehicles today. Learn how this essential component transfers engine power to the driving wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds during turns.

thank you for not advertising betterhelp or RAID
Could you add an axial coloured line to the shafts so that the rotation is more apparent? Since the shafts are uniformly grey, there is no way to see on the shaft itself that it rotates.
Definitely interested in more in-depth videos on limited slip and locked diffs, and transfer cases
We'll keep that in mind for future videos!
Yes please. And the Torsen diffs and how Audi use them in Quattro system.
Honestly I have seen countless videos of how differentials work but never one of how a transfer case works especially once you start combing low range and "on the fly" shifting
Thanks for the suggestion, we'll keep it in mind!
The graphics got even better than the last vid!
Thanks for noticing!
Such a good explanation! I love these old gear-based systems. It's so annoying when every single aspect of a new car boils down to "ehh idk the computer tells it to or somethin"
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! As the next topic I suggest electrical Circuit Breaker. Ranging from high voltage to MCBs they're all very mechanical devices designed to operate without electronics or even external power source.
Thank you for the suggestion, we'll keep it in mind!
Awesome video! Please show and compare posy, limited slip, and locking differentials with the open differential.
Beautiful explainer! This brings back memories of playing with Legos as a kid, where there was a Lego differential gear you could use in your Lego cars.
We're glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliantly explained especially where the ring gear casing is seated, I had a confusion with this one..
The Torsen limited slip differential- I wonder how much traction it got among new vehicles
Thank you for the great explanation!
I always wanted to know what "locking the differential" meant, and why it had to be done on poor terrain.
So now I know it will prevent loss of force due to uneven terrain. Nice!
Also explains why it needs to be "unlocked" before traveling at high speeds without causing damage. Because of the uneven wear you mentioned.
Glad we could help clear things up!
Video on how transfer case and different types of differential works.
You have very amazing videos, just watched all of them to gain an immense amount of knowledge.
We're glad you're enjoying our content!
This video is great! But I feel that it could have explained things better. This video "Around The Corner - How Differential Steering Works (1937)" from 1937 is awesome and its impossible to do not understand differential after watching it
Appreciate the feedback, we'll consider how to improve our explanations in future videos.
ive seen that and yes it is impossible to no understand differential after watching it.
anyone else get Sponsor PTSD when hearing "but before"?
at 0:32 there's an audio error
Yep, heard it to!!😂
Yep. So what?
Love the FJ40 at the start, grew up in one of those being the family vehicle, I now have a FJ80 myself as my daily driver.
Could you document the process of making one of these videos and include some snippets in the next video?
i would love to see how my miatas limited slip dif works... i would also like to have a in depth vid explaining whats the differnence between awd and 4x4
A separate ad popped up in the middle of the Brialliant ad. Good job, UA-cam
Limited slip differential. As well as diff locks
Thanks I knew what it did but the how was fuzzy and that has been cleared up
We're glad we could help!
The key concept, and the whole point of the video, and what I came here to see, is at 6:30 with the case open and two different axle speeds visible. But it's only shown for 1-2 sec. I think that's a major flaw in this otherwise excellent animation.
Coucou les loulous 😁

6:46 very common mistake! Power (or more precisely _torque_ ) is always the same on both wheels at an open diff. The problem is, that torque is limited by the "support" coming from the wheels. And if one wheel experiences a zero grip situation, the whole torque transfer brokes down.
Every teen: "What a nice invention. Now let me weld it so I can drift"
Every engineer's night mare, but effective.
would love to see a limited slip diff, this video is very simple and IMO you would get more viewers if you went a little more in depth.
Can you please tell me which software you use to make these animation? I am an educator and I want to include animations in my course.
Pay no attention to the air intake connected directly to the exhaust manifold. lol
Perhaps it was an AI generated picture?
Do a.pcm, can/bus ect.
4:50 ' which allows each wheel to rotate at different speeds [sic]..." I don't think you mean this. A wheel can operate at different speeds without a differential -- e.g. at 10 mph it will operate at a different speed than it does at 55 mph. I think what you mean is "....allows the two wheels to simultaneously operate at different speeds. "
No, because he already spent the preceding 4 minutes making it clear what he meant by "different speeds", so the brevity was justified.
Pedantry.
