    Whoever created the differential is a genius. I didn't think that differentials were this simple and compact.

      From what I understand, differential gears were not created by any one person. It was independently created multiple times in multiple regions across Eurasia at multiple points in history (eg. the ancient Greeks, ancient Chinese kingdoms, etc independently developed it as early as 2000 years ago). So it was already an old and well known concept by the premodern era.

      @@Intranetusa I guess I'm not well versed in history that far back, but, as I understand it, it was also used as a multiplier gear in mechanical adding machines before it was in cars.

    This is the best animation I've ever seen that demonstrates how a differential works.
    It allows the viewer to visually sense how the torque is transmitted at the two different speeds.

    For Christmas 1962 I got a large scale model car. Although I had to assemble the differential I didn't completely understand the mechanics. After all these years it is nice to have such a clear explanation and animated illustration of its operation.

      @@RichardFStripeRendezvous so when its going straight, both wheels want to slow down so they both exert a force backwards on the spider wheel but they cancel out. Image just the left wheel trying to slow down, it would push back on the spider wheel and rotate it counter clockwise. If the two wheels are doing this theyll try to rotate it opposite ways and it cancels out. (This is about why they dont rotate when going straight)
      Now for turning, the spider wheel is pushing both wheels forwards still because of the larger gear it is mounted on, but the wheel on the right needs to spin less and if it didnt it would have to slip and drag along the ground. This is friction. Instead of this friction happening to the rubber of the wheel it carries through the axle to the spider gear. Remember what we learned about both wheels equally pushing back on it? Well now this added friction causes the spider wheel to rotate. If you look at just the sides of it where it connects to the wheel axles, on the right side the larger ring gear rotation will be rotating the right wheel, but the spider wheel’s side that we are looking at is moving the opposite way.
      For the left side its the same, but since the friction is rotating the spider wheel on the right this rotation is added to the left axle. You really just have to think about the gears colliding and pushing.

      There's a rear end called a "Detroit Locker" that locks the gears so they turn at the same speed. I don't know it's origins but's used for drag racing so power goes to both wheels evenly at all times. If the racing car turns a corner the inside wheel typically chirps as it rounds the corner because the weight is on the outer wheel and the inner wheel has to spin freely by doing short little wheel hops.

    My husband is an airplane mechanic and loves watching these kind of videos. When I was a child, my dad was in charge of tractor drivers when part of the Federal route of Brazil Rio/Bahia was building, around 1950’s, and he had a room just for his tools and equipment that he had to work with, so I always enjoyed being around heavy machinery, tractors and its equipments and tools.. loved this video.. thanks a lot, it brought me back good memories of my dad, which I miss a lot!

    Thats the best representation of the power train n how its divided by a differential based on your curve of travel. It does well to convey how the free spinning gears simultaneous apply power but allow each axle to spin as need.

      I think most inventor and or engineers simply wanted more efficient ways so they come up with rough ideas until we finally get what we have now. They're goal is to solve problems first. Then they can improve on that I suspect.

    I feel for those who are still not getting it that a different wording is needed. The differential allows the wheels to freely slip relative to the main drive shaft and relative to eachother. The differential has no direct control of the individual wheels apart from when both of the wheels are rotating at the same speed (equal forces)

      I don't think that makes it easier to understand. The unit contains only gears, and gears don't freely slip.

    That is so smart ! I never even considered that the wheels have to travel at different rpm’s to accommodate a turn, something so simple I overlooked that blew my mind and the solution is so brilliant 👌

    It wasn't mentioned in the video, but the gears have a helical cut to provide more contact surface area for strength.

    Amazing animations help make this quite clear. However, the part about velocity (of spider and side gears) was a bit opaque (again the animation helped, but the terms and the arrows shown from an isometric angle were not the easiest to grasp intuitively)--maybe rotating the view to on top during that section might help?

    It's brilliantly simple. It just finally clicked in my head. If one side turns lets say a quarter turn more then it's going to cause the gears to spin which has the opposite effect on the other side so it would turn a quarter turn less relative to the other side
    Now it also makes perfect sense why if you have a car lifted in the air and spin the tire by hand it causes the other tire to spin in the other way, it's just simply because it has to have the opposite effect on the other side and because the other wheel is stopped the only way it can "slow down" is to turn backwards because the equation goes negative

    What an ingeniouos invention this is. I neve really understood the inner workings of a differential, but this video clears a up a lot. Thnx for creating!
    If someone read this: do I see it correct when I say that the outer wheel in a turn dictates the division of torque by the spider wheel, or is it a combination of both wheels?

    A differential is a gear train with three shafts that has the property that the rotational speed of one shaft is the average of the speeds of the others, or a fixed multiple of that average.
    The following description of a differential applies to a traditional rear-wheel-drive car or truck with an open or limited slip differential combined with a reduction gearset using bevel gears (these are not strictly necessary - see spur-gear differential):
    Thus, for example, if the car is making a turn to the right, the main ring gear may make 10 full rotations. During that time, the left wheel will make more rotations because it has farther to travel, and the right wheel will make fewer rotations as it has less distance to travel. The sun gears (which drive the axle half-shafts) will rotate at different speeds relative to the ring gear (one faster, one slower) by, say, 2 full turns each (4 full turns relative to each other), resulting in the left wheel making 12 rotations, and the right wheel making 8 rotations.
    The rotation of the ring gear is always the average of the rotations of the side sun gears. This is why if the driven roadwheels are lifted clear of the ground with the engine off, and the drive shaft is held (say, leaving the transmission in gear preventing the ring gear from turning inside the differential), manually rotating one driven roadwheel causes the opposite roadwheel to rotate in the opposite direction by the same amount.
    When the vehicle is traveling in a straight line there will be no differential movement of the planetary system of gears other than the minute movements necessary to compensate for slight differences in wheel diameter, undulations in the road which make for a longer or shorter wheel path, etc.

    Great animation! Just the one correction towards the end of the video: an open differential, by design, *always* sends equal torque to the left and right sides. There are inherent manufacturing imperfections and other issues that contribute to 'torque steer' and 'torque wander', which is why in practice any road load data will not show a perfect 50:50 split.
    When one wheel is on ice, for example, the loading on the engine drops, so the overall torque being sent through the driveshaft drops, but is still split nearly equally across the halfshafts.
    Another way to understand the torque path is through classical mechanics: the pinion gear applies a force (N) on the ring gear, which gets multiplied by the length from the center/pivot (m). This gets applied to the side gears via the spider gear. When the car is moving in a straight line, the force is equally applied in the same direction to the left and right side gears. When a wheel begins to slip, the force is still equally split left to right, but the direction changes (one sees the force in the opposite direction). This video has a great representation of that around the 3:00 minute mark. However, since the same force is being applied on both sides and at the same distance to the pivot point (but in reversed directions), the torque applied to both halfshafts is the same.

      You are both correct. He says all the POWER goes to the right wheel. In the situation shown, torque is the same, but rpm of the right wheel is significantly higher than that of the left wheel. So both wheels receive the same torque, but the right wheel expends way more of the horsepower (torque x rpm) in doing so

      power stays the same but torque doesnt. Power is based on rpm as well and since 1 half shaft is goinng faster itll have more power at higher rpm but less torque

      The force vectors on two sides of the spider gear decide the turning of spider gear. If the forces are same, the probability of rotation becomes 0. Sounds esoteric but thats how its embedded in our physics.

    I would love to see a helical limited slip explained. I have seen decent videos on torsen and clutch type limited slip, but nothing that breaks down a helical type well.
    It's one thing to read about the principle of operation, but a video is always good to help visualize the principles at play.

    This was a good video as always but you guys could have mentioned that, to overcome the problem at 4:15, cars computers use the brakes to brake the wheel with no traction to force the other wheel with traction to spin as well. This is known as "Traction Control"

      What you describe is called brake based limited slip differential. Traction Control existed before those brake based LSD’s and only reduced engine power to create enough traction.

    Differential gears were independently created multiple times in multiple regions across Eurasia at multiple points in history. It is interesting that ancient China/Han Dynasty and the ancient Greek kingdoms had these devices around 2000 years ago.
