@@KrakDuk That's part of why I really like the Mordant Acid Dogs (frequently confused with the Savlar Chem Dogs). Fun fact: The Tallarn Desert Raider fought the Eldar of the Biel-Tan craftworld (correct me if I am wrong), but in the middle of the conflict due to the appearance of the Iron Warrior Choas Marine, the two side stepped into a truce and fought side by side against the new comer. And at the end of the war, both side gained respect for each other with some fighters even became war friends as they taught the other 's their perspectives of warfare.

Steel Legion were my initial gateway drug into accepting that in 40k the lowliest average human has spirit and balls in such an unforgiving galaxy. The moment I realized they exist, GW took them away from us and somehow their greatest series is also a brutal pain in the arse to find. That being said, the Elysian Drop troopers are also a favorite purely because of my time in Darktide.

They mirror how a lot of societies under pressure turn to organized crime, despondents, and criminals to secure battle-ready troops. Like how say, after the invasion of Iraq, a lot of the more hardcore for the various more extreme fedayeen insurgent groups recruited from bandit gangs, displaced farmers, etc, who even adopted the practice of being given the privilege of looting weapons from fallen enemies as a form of payment for their services, just like how the Chem-Dogs do.

Also, Steel Legion could be possibly based of Soviets in late ww2 and cold war due to their uniform resembling radioactive uniforms due to the leathery and covered nature which is peak cold war aesthetic and their beige/khaki uniform with green helmet is really similar to the soviet ww2 uniform. The chimera is based of soviet BMP and there are lots of legionnaires that have Russian names (Kurov, Andrej, etc.). Soviets in late ww2 and cold war where extremely mechanized and had an industry on par with the Americans (late ww2 and cold war). They also were obsessed with tanks just like the steel legion. war for armaggedon also resemble the war for Stalingrad due to tanks being produced in factories while battles occurred there for example. So they could be based on both ww2 Germans and cold war soviets.

I'd say there's a good amount of Soviet Union - Russian (Latter in particular) for the Steel Legion in that their overall strategy and organization (whilst still Panzegrenadier in nature ) is heavily similar to certain Cold War USSR Guards Divisions who took great lessons and training in what they were as primarily mechanized divisions with good armor and artillery support whilst still having a well trained infantry complement. They have a similar number and again when it comes to unit organization and how each of their units incorporates each and every asset it can through finagling and politicking (While other Regiments are more restricted in comparison) also to somewhat of a stretch it all stems from how the Chimera is very much similar to the BMP-2 (Especially in how the SL prefer the ones that have Hunter-Killer ATGM's, mounted similarly in most depictions much like the BMP-2's Kornet.)
There's also the fact in how all wars of Armageddon (the third war especially) played out very similar to the various marches into Russia by Western nations. The third war of Armageddon is quite literally a reference to Operation Barbarossa of WW2 with the Steel Legion taking the Soviet role of the war. Not to mention there were parts where when the Orks entered Armageddon Hives there were literal Stalingrad moments where freshly made vehicles were being pumped out and fighting within minutes of their completion, there were even fights inside factories that involved artillery use and Legionnaires entering half finished vehicles to use against the Orks.
A couple things mentioning too that isn't related to the Soviet/Cold war bit is that Armageddon is considered very friendly to Abhumans. There was also a Colonel who detected that there was going to be a rebellion on a relatively backwater but still developed Agri-world of Cassel in the form of a religious revolt, he deployed his Steel Legion there and right when the Heretical Cardinal declared for a crusade the Colonel quickly acted and within 6 hours the rebellion had been defeated.

Their uniform resemble radioactive uniforms due to the leathery and covered nature which is peak cold war aesthetic and their beige/khaki uniform with green helmet is really similar to the soviet ww2 uniform. Their chimera is based of soviet BMP and there are lots of legionnaires that have Russian names (Kurov, Andrej, etc.). Soviets in late ww2 and cold war where extremely mechanized and had an industry rivaling the Americans. They also were obsessed with tanks just like the steel legion. war for armaggedon also resemble the war for Stalingrad.

I think the steel legion may also take some queues from early Cold War stuff. The uniform does also resemble the experimental US Pentomic Division armour. Between that and heavy APC usage over blasted wastes it takes queues from the 50s idea of what ww3 would be.
