- Today I discuss whether or not the sisters of battle armor makes sense, you know what i'm referring to... I will consider lore, history, and aesthetics to find out once and for all!
I always want to put out accurate lore, but I recognize the real and likely possibility I will make mistakes. Entertainment is the first priority of the Quick 40K lore series, and I always implore you to look into the topics discussed more in depth. Read the books, play the game, and watch other creators too!

Great video. There’s also an in-universe reason for the boob armor that most people don’t realize: The armor was commissioned and designed by Goge Vandire who used the sisters (called the brides of the emperor at the time) as his personal harem. So, it makes sense for it to look like that because it was designed by a pervy crazy despot.

Yes, but also no. The Sisters of Silence also have boob plate and have since before the Heresy. If anything, the Sororatas armour is based off of the Null Maiden armour in the same way that Astarte armour is derived from Custodes armour.
My favorite fan-canon reason is so that even under armor they are distinguishable as feminine, as the Ecclesiarchy can have no men under arms. So they have boob armor to go "Yeah these are girls, it's okay, we are following The Rules™️"

Aye the blood angels definitely have a cool unique gothic aesthetic. I'm more of a Dark Angels guy myself I just love the monk robes over power armor look.
For me at least, isn’t that the sister have boob armor, but that they ONLY have boob armor.
Also, I just prefer women in not boob armor in general and they are other way of making armor feminine that just look cooler.

Frankly, I am not even against all types of boob armor, has long has it doesn’t have a gap in between the boob and cover the body, then I am fine with it.
I just think that boob armor (the one with the gap) just doesn’t look has cool and badass has not boob. Maybe if it has abs, it could work.
I also don’t collect minis because I know how much they cost, I don’t always have the best control on my money, don’t have a job and I am also a cheap bastard, so while I would like to collect them and kitbash them, I won’t for a while.
Kitbashing would also not change warhammer art of the sister of battle.

There's a lot of rule of cool in 40k designs, the dialogue about boob armour doesn't take into account that boobs are cool and therefore boob armour fits in the rule of cool

As a woman the boob armor is awesome. Men get stylized armor all the time to accentuate their masculine features, women doing the same isn't a big deal.
Now historically irl it would have been more of an issue with the materials holding up to what they would likely encounter on the battlefield, and not accidentally deflecting a blade directly into your heart. But given the state of 40k, you'd be hard pressed to say that's a realistic or important thing to account for with their armor which is mostly there to protect against lasers and similar weapons, and where all the swords are chainsaws ironically making the boob plate less of a liability because of the lack of piercing potential.
Not to mention the whole problem is with more pronounced armor, which is only a consideration for named and important characters/officers who are clearly wearing it because it's more ceremonial and they are less likely to personally be on the front lines making the point moot. The standard armor given to normal Sisters of Battle barely have any bump, well within the realms of what is safe and practical even irl
(also idk how to explain this to the guys, but the boobs don't just squish down, having a little extra space is important to make sure they can actually breath in their armor and aren't slowly crushing their rib cage while doing high exertion activities like purging the heretical and xenos filth that plague Humanity's Galaxy. And as someone else pointed out, if you really want to talk about the armor being bad you're looking in entirely the wrong place, it's the horrifically inexcusable high heels that don't make any sense. Give these ladies some proper boots Emperor Damnit!!!)

Only thing I think I would disagree with here is the whole "internal deflection" thing. Personally, I think it's highly exaggerated to the point of absurdity. That's not to say that it isn't sub-optimal, I just think that *certain* people on the internet overexaggerate the issues with it.
Looking at historical precedents, boob shaped armour could have easily existed if more women were knights. Ofc there were a few documented cases here and there, but the thing about armour is: It's not tightly fit to the body. They often wore thick leader underneath, multiple layers of clothes to dampen the force of the strike, and in case of penetration, or a hit between armour parts, to have more layers of safety. This meant that "conventional" male armour fit women just as much as it did men. Till this point, we're just talking about practicality. Now, if female knights were more common, bigger customizations for women or cultural shifts would have easily been possible, including armour mirroring the shape of women, perhaps idealized versions of the female human form, like often found in male armour.
Tldr.: Boob armour didn't exist because this is the way our culture and civilization happened to shape, but that doesn't make it unrealistic in a fantasy setting or a hypothetical history that just happened to unfold in a different direction.
I much prefer an armor that is clearly tailored to fit boobs but, not so super exaggerated.
in real life, there are examples of boob armour but for very rich women, as it takes a lot more work to make, so women would just ware the same as men but with a bigger chest size

I think it's just more obvious with the Sisters because the entire army has it. But yeah, Howling Banshees might actually predate the Sisters in terms of when they were introduced to the game.

@@Trayzentheinfinite In the WH40K chronology, Banshees as one of the first Aspect Warrior shrines definitely predate Sisters that only showed up a few thousand years after the Heresy. I just don't know enough about the really early game to be 100% sure that the Howling Banshees were introduced to the canon before any mention of the Sisters of Battle.

Mini’s are pretty small and it’s hard to tell male from female unless they have boob armour. Without it they’re just skinny guys with somewhat feminine heads tacked on.

And honestly you can't really tell the difference at tabletop distance. A trooper in armor with a rifle looks the same be they male or female. Men are just larger versions. "boob armor" is an aesthetic thing, and the "nuns with guns" is a fetish thing from the 80's/90's. However armor that shows off physical features isn't a new thing. The Romans and Greeks wore breast plates that imitated ideals in masculine appearance and were reasonably effective as body armor.

This is similar to how i feel about space marines not wearing helmets.
Other people say its stupid, but the way i look at it is: a space marine is someone that would totally expose their most critical weakness to the enemy, just to put the fear of the emperor into them. Or for any other religious or ego reason a space marine could come up with lol.

i headcanoned it as space marine super sense like a space marine can smell and feel the difference in air pressure and while marine do get good gear outside of the salamanders, ultra's, iron hands etc. and the rate they lose stc's most space marine chapters armor is just two parts of broken armor jury rigged to make one working one so maybe since if i had enough courage (which i don't) i would shoot for the head so maybe most helmets have breaking audio or vox equipment but the real reason is to look like a badass and sell models

When i think about it the armour of the Emperors 'Imperial Truth' Imperium should probably have been more ultilitarian in the 30k period, all dull practical armour with little flair, while the 40k era, driven by its faith and passion for ceremony, is naturally filled with elaborate, baroque gothic fashions.
I've seen a few discussions regarding "boob armour" (in the context of breastplates with individual cups, not bikini armour, which is obviously not actual armour) from people who do have experience, and the general consensus is that it doesn't really make a significant difference to the protective qualities. Good quality plate is going to be good quality plate regardless, let alone power armour, and the cuirass is one of the toughest pieces by default - shot trap or not, any hit that can penetrate right at the centre of the cuirass can probably get through other parts of the armour far more easily. As long as there's proper padding beneath the armour (which there should be anyway) - it might theoretically be a little more vulnerable than a more conventionally shaped cuirass, but not enough to matter.
It'd be more expensive to shape the cuirass that way, and there's not really a benefit to doing so (breastplates normally have a bulge anyway, and moving the bulge up slightly wouldn't be too hard), but if the armorer really wanted to make sure it was obvious that the wearer was a woman (or wanted to be seen as one), there's really not anything significant to be lost from shaping a cuirass that way. And the Ecclesiarchy armorers really don't want anyone mistaking the Sisters for men under arms.
Also everything in 40k revolves around the Rule of Cool. And Sisters of Battle are coolness incarnate

To add to the importance of femininity for the Sororitas, I need enthasise just how important it is this idea of looking like a woman matters. The imperium practically worships all things human, and the purity of the human form is appart of this. The boob armor and corsets of sororitas armor isn't just there to say "I am a woman", its to scream "I am a beautiful woman and a pinnacle of the female human form!!" The irony is that the armor can ensure the sisters look the part of a perfect woman even if their actual bodies might not be so blessed, be it by poor genetics or the countless battle scars they accumulate. Thusly, removing the boob armor would be a huge insult to a sororitas as it claims that something is wrong with the female form at its peak. Its akin to saying the Emperor was somehow wrong in the gifts he granted humanity.
Let's remind that sororitas don't shy away from things like make-up. Their appearance very much matters to them.
The practically point of view falls flat when you remember this is Warhammer 40,000, the faction that gets put on all the posters literally cannot raise their arms due to comically large pauldrons. Being practical was never the intent.

To the Imperium, being human is very important. This can be seen by all the damn (human) skulls they got everywhere on their armour and in their iconography. Also in their distaste for the mutant. So having the most religious branch of their military accentuate their human form a bit more than normal seems plausible to me.
My take: erotica is one of the crucial parts of John Blanche's art, who helped to bring SoB to life, and was a major influence on the development of 40k visual and symbolic languages. When he drew both male and female characters, especially high-standing bureaucracy, inquisition and all sorts of Imperial adventurers, it wasn't rare for him to include erotic elements, even some bdsm-coded undertones and a lot of the grotesque elements. I don't think that designers should give up the artistic integrity of what's left of the franchise before it succumbs to the inevitability of being watered down to appeal to the broadest audience possible.
And it's an awesome design, and by that I mean it gives a recognizable profile, it stands out and it's appealing to those who actually gonna buy this stuff and whos opinions actually matter.
And it doesn't have to make sense. Admechs literally make the most high tech rifles but also with the freaking wooden stocks, and their sniper stays on the freaking leg extensions for crying out loud. And Space Marine Chaplains stick pieces of paper for the good luck. And they find it easier to make an elevator switch out of a human by turning him into a servitor than to build a device that a science fair kid can build. And this is exactly the type of energy boob armor had, and part of the reason we love 40k.
Thank you for this. As much as I enjoyed the arguments made in the video, I feel like it didn't address the elephant in the room. People get upset about boob armor not because it's impractical. They get upset about it because it's boobs.
Anything erotic or suggestive has the potential to attract angry comments - be it from "concerned" parents (fuck them), the sex-negative identity politics crowd (fuck them too), or the religious and conservative crowd (fuck 'em both ways).
Saying that boob armor is "impractical" is just a stand-in, a cop-out, an attempt to find a different angle other than "I find human sexuality offensive". So I don't see how proving or disproving its practicality can address the issue.
The designers and artists draw them this way because it's sexy. It's like adding a pinch of salt to your sweet pancake batter, or sprinkling a bit of pepper on your steak. It's by far not the main ingredient, but a spice that can vastly improve and deepen the flavor of the dish, when done right.
If you don't like the resulting dish - just order something else. If you feel like you have the right to dictate whether or not others may pepper their steaks, or spice up their character designs - you need a therapist.
I don't think we're going far enough, I'm thinking of the blue body paint armor of the Britons.

What always amuses me about the "boob armour" argument in general, not just 40K, is the fact the ancient Greeks and Romans had breast plates with huge pectorals and six packs. And you never hear anyone complaining about that!

Honestly, I first got into Warhammer 40k because I thought the Sister of Battle on the Dawn of War: Soulstorm banner looked really cool. The armor they wear looks really cool to me and the stylized breastplate and all the skulls and flare really made it stand out.
I'd agree. You covered the major points that I'd think of, so great job. I guess I would add that the Adeptus Sororitas aren't so much a standing military as being a security force for the Adeptus Ministorum. Yes, they can fight in battles, but they aren't a conventional military with all of the proper arms necessary to fight as an independent fighting force. I mean, they don't have the air support, artillery, or the logistical forces necessary to fight proper military campaigns. That's not really their job. Their job is to provide security for the Adeptus Ministorum's facilities: holy sites, churches, and for high ranking officials (who are assigned a security detachment of Sisters). That means that they are a highly visible force, so they must wear gear that impresses as well as being practical. Their very existence requires them to PROVE that they are a force of women, so boob armor it is. Their armor HAS to be very eye-catching, and it is very ceremonial (Seriously, these girls wear nothing that could be considered camoflauge! Their color schemes are EXTREMELY VISIBLE!). In real world terms they aren't "soldiers" like say a trooper in the 12th Cavalry Regiment, they are "honor guards" like the Swiss Guards at the Vatican, but more grim dark and ready to do some bloody business (which the old Swiss Guard was happy enough to do 200+ years ago!).

-female shaped armor (look at police vests) is a thing. Yes it's not boobplate but it does exist. I'd imagine it'd be if anything more critical with power armor.
-for all the "practical" critiques of sister armor, it gets the biggest part right in that it covers everything. Bad boobplate armor leaves the wearers cleavage (and thus heart) exposed. Sister armor doesn't do that.
-Especially in ancient cultures, looking impressive was a real serious important thing. Since 40k is what it is, this applies here.

The wise Eldar already know this. Every suit of armor either has boobs or abs. Plus large helm crests are obviously very important.
On a side note, the intimidation factor of armor or helm crests on the battlefield historically should probably not be underestimated. Fear and morale was a really big part of winning an ancient battle.

I have heard from others that in earlier editions, (pre 8th edition to be specific, because with me getting into 40k & being a Sisters player in 8th, it isn't anything I personally know currently happening), the boobs of the armor housed explosives, most likely as a self destruct functionality or straight up detachable grenades.

Also it's important to not forget that it's 40k and things often aren't very practical in this universe, it just fits the over the top theme of the universe
Boob armor is bad for melee combat because it concentrates force between the ribs. However sororitas armor is ballistic armor, so the boob plate has more positives than negatives. It makes most chest shots hit at an angle on a rounded surface, lowering penetration chance, and deflection isn't a problem as long as the wearer has a deflector neck plate equipped. It helps more than it inhibits, and looks super cool.

The codpiece was legitimately practical though, it was the middle ground between plate armor faulds and mail skirts, it offered quality protection of the groin which was legitimately important but usually difficult to compromise between good protection of that area or important mobility, specifically for reasons of horse riding because you know, knights. The cod-piece offered reasonable mobility but with better protection than simple mail.
You forgot about their religious faith in a 10ft talk "dead" superhuman giving them space magic protection.

One of my favorite quotes about the armor from the guard is “they come in two sizes, too big or too small”
A lot of people that complain about how titty armor would work seem to always assume the wearer would just stand there and take a blow to the chest
Like bruh if they're trained to wear armor of any kind they're trained to step aside when a strike comes
And, you know
Sororitas use guns and flamethrowers before getting into melee range
To be able to strike a sororitas in the titty to test the force distribution you kinda have to get past all the bolts and flame jets first

Tbh I don't mind the soritas boobplate as long as it's not actually form-fitting. It would be neat to see more "practical" sisters armor just as a contrast. The high heels/platform heels are probably the most stupid things about their armor, but it would be interesting if these sorts of "hyperfeminine designs" were mainly kept to high-ranking sisters and the rank and file were more subtle about it. More visual variety is always good.

I've seen a guy argue that boob armor acts like a tank shot trap but a tank shot trap only occurs under specific ballistic conditions and I don't think getting hit by a gauss flayer or pulse carbine will be any more deadly with boob armor than with any other kind of plate. Edit: you touched upon that nvm

I remember coming across a fan art of a remembrancer drawing a Sister of Battle in armour. The joke was the actual sister was wearing rather bulky power armour, while the artwork was the classic 40k art.

I have often found myself wishing I had a codpiece, slaying my enemies causes uncomfortable arousal in my armor.
I like the armour being super ornate but I wish it was more bulky, it doesn't look like power armour, it doesn't even look more thick than a kevlar vest. Super thick power armour wouldn't be able to cling to boobs like that. Also i fuckinh hate that they have high heels, I know there's a reason but it's stupid and would prevent them from fighting for more than a couple hours (no amount of training will let you fight in high heels for more than an hour) I would much prefer they have platform boots (I think a sisters order who mistakenly where built on a Forge world where they worship the omnisier and they are given robotic legs below the knee would go hard but wouldn't fit most armies, it would need to be a homebred thing)
Also the muscle curas was ornate, it was used by officers who weren't expected to actually fight. The cod piece was just as silly, just as stupid and just as real as they seem.

Ok, so logically you would reenforce the armour in that area. Now the boobs funnel attacks towards the thickest part of the armour. Plus it's the sturnum, it's one of the most naturally armoured points on the human body.
This is of course completely ignoring the fact that when fighting someone in armour you don't try to attack straight through the thick metal plates on the torso, but instead attack weak-points like joints, the back of legs or the opponents head.
The downsides of the "boob plate" are often horribly exaggerated. The internal deflection issue can easily be mitigated while still keeping the boobplate, there's already tons of designs out there that do it pretty well. Also, I don't get the whole "grab point" thing, that one is new but, if it's referring to grabbing the boobplate itself...you're not gonna get much leverage out of that. You simply wouldn't grab the boobplate to throw her to the ground. It would be so much easier to grab anywhere else on the armor anyway. Also, the added weight point is, again, insanely negligible when you remember that she's already wearing armor. Like one or two more pounds isn't going to be felt.
Could the "boobplates" be designed better while keeping the aesthetic? Yeah, probably. But is it like a critical weakpoint on the armor? No, not really and, as someone else pointed out, the real issue with Sororitas armor is the high heels.
Definitely every faction needs boob armor.
Eldar also has boob armor so pretending that only the sisters have it is just anti-intellectual

People seem to forget that the sister’s power armor is made from the same material as the space marine’s power armor, so there’s not really any significant difference in terms of protection.

Warhammer is primarily based on aesthethics (ie. "rule of cool"), not practicality, and while you can dismiss this as just an out-of-universe explanation, it can explain a lot of things in-universe as well. The marine helmets scowl, the titans and spaceships carry cathedrals, the units carry battle standards and banners, their drones are built into skulls, their digital styluses are shaped like feather quills, and so forth. The point is that the Imperium is heavily steeped in symbolism, traditionalism and archaicism, often to the point of simply fearing innovation and repeating traditions for the sake of continuity. There may have been artistic and cultural reasons specifically for sculpting Sororita armor the way it is once, but at this point, it probably persists in a "boob plate" style because this creates a sense of connection to previous generations, centuries and millennia of Sororitas, because it has become codified (and fossilized) as what Sororitas SHOULD look like.
The Space Marines have SHIT TON of stuff like this that people only rarely bat an eye at, like the chaplains have skull faces, or them lugging around bug chunks of cloth for some reason, or wearing capes or pelts or crests or any number of dumbass accoutrements that are just going to get fried or ripped off the minute combat starts. Or shoulder pads so gigantic they can't look to the side. But it's because cultural identity and continuity matters SO MUCH for the different groups in 40k. Practicality is a secondary concern.
Good video but the issue also is that realistically, the writers that made the sisters just wanted an excuse to put their kinks into the universe. Because even with your examples you can see that the guys in 40k have a lot more practical armor and more limited additions. Baseline space marines armor is made to be practical, they don’t have any abs or codpieces built in, even for the previously loyalist Emperors Children who you’d think would be into that. Not to mention this also extends past the sisters, pretty much any female character bar guardsmen have boob armor, from inquisitors, to assassins to the sisters of silence. They all have it despite the impracticality and difference in their station. People often forget that due to the huge mass of authors and creators 40k has and due to its age, it’s gonna have some weird and less then great parts due to those issues. The sister’s armor from the boobs, to corsets to heels make it extremely impractical and realistically uncomfortable to wear as well. But since the original writers just wanted hot women and didn’t put much thought into it (you can tell due to their extremely limited lore in the past) they didn’t really design something practical and limited their designs to what dudes would find hot so they’d garner more attention
What I can't wrap my head around is the armored high heels. That 'Cannot' be practical when you're stepping about a rubble strewn battlefield.

I spent the entire video waiting for you to talk about whether or not they wear fashionable combat high heels, or wedge heels, or just boots with normal soles, since I kept noticing their heels in your drawings - although I suppose one could argue the heels fall into the same category as everything else artistic-wise in 40k: it's rule of cool and you're not supposed to think about it / in this case it accentuates their femininity, so (possible in conjunction with the previous point) they might actual want to wear heels into battle since their femininity is the reason the Adeptus Sororitas has an Order Militant in the first place
Also might be a power armour argument, that the systems can do their own balance calculations for the sister during combat to alleviate the balance concerns brought on by a reduced footprint - but in doing so, wearing power armour (that isn't connected to their nervous system, and thus is comparatively sluggish to respond compared to that of the Imperium's transhuman armouries like you said) to enable you to be able to wield bigger, stronger and therefore heavier weapons, is really not gonna help if you're wearing heels, potentially on muddly or sandy terrain.
The sister would heft her heavy bolter, then sink straight into the ground until the heavy bolter is resting comfortably on said ground, and she's up to her mid-thighs in mud

Yeah I was originally going to talk about the other aspects of the sisters armor design like the high heels, but it ended up taking too much time and detracting from the flow of the video imo. I think the points you brought up are very valid though.
I suppose one other use might just simply be the extra height. Considering sisters are mostly unaugmented and women are generally shorter, having the extra hight over opponents would be presumably more intimidating. This also plays into the perspective of sisters being a big symbol of the ecclisarcys might. Kind of a stretch, but idk. Tbh I think the high heels are much more impractical than the rest of their kit

Wearing bras causes tedious backpain, but it's better for the longterm health of the breasts. That's why women wear them, even when they're not dressing up to look sexy for a night out or something. Gotta spend time not wearing a bra to let yourself breathe and relax. If the boob armor is POWERED ARMOR, then you get a bra that causes no backpain. The powered armor is handling its own weight and the heft of the boobs. This becomes even more advantageous for older women who have survived many battles and grown into mature bodies, as boob size and weight tends to increase with age. Just to add another point in favor of this cool design.
Getting rid of boob armor is like getting rid of Space Marine shoulders.

The only in-universe justification for the sororitas armor that I can ascertain is that Goge Vandire was a creepy old man and that it's the modern eclassiarchy's way of rubbing the glaring legal loophole that they technically don't have 'men' under arms in the administratums face.
Ya the little loophole is the biggest one for me. I think Sebastian Thor exploiting that loophole almost immediately after he reformed the ecclisiarchy is so funny and 40K to me.

The Orks should have boop armor!
There is ACTUAL boob armor in real life. It was made for a queen in africa I believe. It even had sculpted pierced nipples.
Also most armor is steel or other durable metals. If you try to stab that you will see it isnt going through. Even with non boob armor, just a flat plane of metal won't be pierced easily. Boob plate doesn't magically weaken it because they can stab the middle. That being said, most arguments against it seem to not really know how armor works.
But bikini armor is never a good idea
sororitas are also running around with automatic grenade launchers in their bolters and aoe weapons like flamers and meltas, even marines arent going to loiter around looking for weak points while on fire or getting hassled with an anti tank gun. they also tend to vastly outnumber any other power armored force in a given engagement as theyre just highly trained women, not hyper augmented bio weapons, and in any given engagement using church money can field an arsenal that would not be out of place in an astartes armory. they're zealots not idiots, theyre generally going to leverage range and some of the best gear in the imperium against things like chaos marines or orks if at all possible, and against things like fire warriors or cultists they're in power armor and favor power weapons over chain swords, to give them a measurable advantage.

the sororitas; on the contrary, i have ahold of you and a hand flamer / inferno pistol in my pocket. look at sororitas jump troops, theres the zephyrim the sororitas assault squad, they default carry a power sword that tends to pass through most armor with very little encouragement, or the seraphim which echo 30k destroyer squads with jump packs. the squad leader can carry a power sword and plasma pistol and two of their number can dual wield hand flamers or inferno pistols . first born assault squads were frequently issued a flamer or a melta gun, the seraphims option is much more accessible in a melee press, where astartes will default to a chain sword they can physically force through the opponent. even the repentia who run in unarmored arent armed for a drawn out duel , they bring eviscerators which generally function similarly to guts dragon slayer, namely use their massive size to hit the enemy once really really hard with it and pump the trigger to keep them focused on the teeth.
The "bullet trap" everyone complains about assumes that the center part of their breastplate is actually a weakness. I want all of you to grab a Sister of Battle model and look at the neck guard. Do you see something? It's a perfectly flat surface down to the center of the Sister's chest. Now I want you to do the same thing to your own chest. Then I want you to remember that this piece of armor goes past a fully-contained helmet, complete with a built-in breathing apparatus.
