  • In this episode of The Big Build, we now have a great big scaffold to cover the entire property, this has enabled us to start removing all the existing roof tiles and look at some of the existing fabric of the roof structure

I agree with the other people too. The previous Roofer/Builders did not have a clue what they were doing. We've had a loft conversion done about 10 years ago and come winter I can't bear the coldness of the room, so I sometimes stay down stairs on the sofa to get a good nights sleep. What our builder did when he had to plaster the pitched side of the roof was to put a thin space blanket across the rafters and then used thin plaster board to cover up the so called insulation. Knowing what I now know, I would have insisted this be done correctly. At the time when I questioned it, I was told it is being built according to building regs. What utter rubbish !!! I know the building company are no longer around so there's no point in naming them...Thank god for small mercies. We would love to have this put right but money is so tight at the moment. When our son moves out in Sept for university we are moving back to what was our old room...Cant wait to sleep in a warm room again in winter. Even with our heating on 24/7 we still find the loft conversion simply to cold to bear. When you think we shelled out the best part of £38 thousand for this, I can't express how disappointed and let down we are.

The original builder already has "spoken" in the form of his shoddy work. No excuses. It's not isolated. Other channels like "roofing shite roofing" find this stuff is all too commonplace.

Love you're showing all the stages, so please continue; it's great viewing for the general public to see the difference between those who haven't a clue what they're doing, and the knowledgeable, experienced, professional constructors like you. Hi Robin love the plain tile but valleys are better with the valley tile if you have the same pitch looks so much neater. The roof over is so much better than struggling with Tarps.I have seen that before over the years with the use of silicone with pieces of tile in the valleys being stuck in place not good trades people who take pride would never even consider it. Looking forward to the new roof lay out. Many thanks

Its frightening to see such bad work that people are doing and so hard to get a builder who you can trust and do the job right
I need extensive repairs doing to a chimney had many builders out of giving me all kinds of stories of what was wrong with the chimney so I got a drone to fly around the chimney to take high detail pictures of it state of repair and caught lot of these builders out telling lies about what needed doing
I only shown the builders the high-definition photos of the chimney after they give me there conclusions of what needed doing
Good tradesman are hard to find fantastic job Robin look forward to the future videos and see how you get on

Lovely to see a tin roof on a scaffold, as a bricklayer it means I can earn a full weeks money every week.
I worked on a very similar job to this one three years ago, doubled the size of the house, so really looking forward to this build.
During my apprenticeship we covered other trades breifly, they taught us about the tile overlap etc.
That has all been lost now in apprenticeships, not enough time apparently. So wrong, sureley the most expensive purchase of anyones lifes should be built by the best trained men.
I find it so relaxing to watch your videos because I know everything is going to be done as close to perfect as you can make it.
Such a long way from most builders.
As for the polystrene in the roof, break a peice off and set light to it on camera for the veiwers Rob. Just to show why we don't use it.
I can remember ceilings being covered in polystrene tiles in the seventies until the fire brigade did videos showing ceilings on fire.

You speak about poor work, one of my customers had a garage rebuilt by a local builder from Dorking, white van yellow magnets, new tiles etc but didn't fill in the edges below the tiles with cement, just all open you can see the long tile patterns. Dodgy job and the client knows its not right but not had it sorted, should have got you in Robin!

Shoddy scaffolding that no kentledge or anything on it. beams not braced correctly. I'd be checking temporary works design. But doubt there is 1. All temporary roof scaffolds should be designed not bodged due to uplift etc

Throwing off tiles. As they used to say to ensure you caught them aim at their head or their balls. That roof was shocking. I disagree with you again about the pitches just bad roofers. You could easily have used all tile valleys on that roof. That abortion we used to call Chatham valleys where I come from. Any roofer would know that was crap. Even on camera you can see the gauges were wrong. Done right those tiles can last years. I have stripped original peg tile roofs from the 1700's still laid on split lathes and wooden pegs. Re tile and 50 % go back on. This is definitely a big build.
