It always amazes me how solid houses are even with shoddy work like this. We had a structural wall held up by nothing other than fresh air and it hadn't budged in 100 years! 🤣😬 So just left it... (joke!)

Your opening piece about seeing what sort of a job a previous carpenter has made, is one of the big reasons I always try and leave my carpentry work as good as possible. I don't like to criticise other people's work, but everything in that roof was astonishingly poor. I've never seen anything like it. You are about to claim victory once it is all stripped off, as you will then be in control. I'm excited to see new, level plates go on and the new roof structure take shape. 😎

I have seen worse. This Man 100 years ago built a house of 2 stories apparently with a dish for a level and a plumbob that was not level with the ocean breeze. Not a level piece anywhere ,no Square corners, Square cut nails used even for the Trim, Mortar that crumbled and plumbing that flowed in the wrong direction. It still stands today , is occupied and the asphalt shingles keep it somewhat dry. I believe he used a hatchet for most cuts.
A Drunk he died accidentally . He probably did not remember building it . his real name was not known but he used an Irish surname. I'll bet it will still be standing for 50 more years unless it burns. Have you a light?

Hi Robin can I add another point, I think standard of work you have uncovered that some people think I have a saw and a hammer so that makes me qualified obviously not believe or not I have seen some worse work than this executed through my years in the trade. Keep up your excellent work.

Thank you for caring about your workmanship; your clients; your trade; your legacy; your environment; your workers; your safety; your professionalism. Many may not realize or understand that all that you have pointed out directly affects and effects their WELL BEING! Some tradesmen do not recognize it either! But awareness and truthfulness allow for honest change. Thank You. [73 year old carpenter builder that has had to explain to his clients why their lives are impacted by slipshod workmanship]

Hi Robin I think it would be an insult to our profession to say that, that bad work has been carried out by a Carpenter it fits where it touches no true tradesman would do that. It must be such a relief to remove it. Thanks for sharing that's one lucky building to have yourself putting it right, cheers👍

Really like the way you explain and also show proof of bad workmanship. Seen you do other roofs and your attention to detail is spot on....👍👍👍

I was actually quite gratified watching this, I'm classic "all the gear no idea", but reckon you'd find it harder to take my home made shed down than that house. I've done due diligence, but god I hope the builders that start my extension on monday are better than whoever built that pile of poo.

Thanks for this series Robin it’s really interesting! 👍 Really shocking though, that workmanship is theft, cutting corners to ‘save’ on time and material cost (that where no doubt charged for). It’s sad that some trades people see people with money and think they can take advantage. Great to see it done right, I would hire you or those that come with your seal of approval.👍👏

Cowboys everywhere even on new builds all due to a shortage of craftsman and who's at fault the government without a doubt no investment in young people for many many years. I have worked in schools the quality of the tools in the design technology are beyond bad or they just cant afford to buy them 2 hammers for a whole department and 10 blunt and useless chisels. MDF instead of real wood no glue and list list goes on. I watched as a new school was built with lathes with no tooling and universal milling machine which an experienced tradesman would find hard to use also no tooling ( who got the back hander to supply them?) Keep showing us your great work Robin some of it might rub off on so called joiners and tradesman. Great VLOG.

Hi Robin, it is not always about the cost, I know there are areas that have so many nails it is ridiculers and removing the nails is nor cost effective, but one thing is never taken into the cost and that is landfill. We are a nation of “throw it away and get new” but the cost of throwing it away is becoming very expensive not only to the landfill but also to the planet

I guess you just have to look at what's visible and if the tell tale signs are there then walk away. We need a new building standard "RC" proper.

I now understand that roofs don't so much blow off but there's an aerofoil effect that lifts the roof up from the walls and then, depending on strength of wind, blows what is a floating roof away - like a hovercraft or the pucks in a table hockey game that blew air from underneath the pitch which someone had at school.
