    quality shoes do help too..I wore through a pair of Brooks adrenaline gts 12's and couldn't afford a new pair so I bought a pair of 60$ new balance running shoes..they're the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever owned, but they're what I could afford..

    Gait and running analysis lab is a really helpful thing. My wife had terrible shin splints and only thorough analysis in the lab helped find out what causes the condition. To note, she treated her shin splints at NYDNRehab Clinic in NYC.

    There's only so much you can do if they are that tender. I would recommend getting in to see your doctor or physical therapist to receive treatment. You need to be careful, as it can develop into a stress reaction or stress fracture.

    If your post tib is too weak, running barefoot won't solve any problem. You still need to fix the weak muscle.

    I am a junior in high school and I run cross country. I went 4 weeks running without having shin splints on the inlner Lowe part of my shins, and now they won't stop hurting. They are so tender that when I touch them they hurt so bad. I would not like to miss much practice so what do you suggest I do? I have a cross country meet on Saturday I would not want to miss it

    Short bursts of jogging or short burst of high intensity running? If the latter, go much easier. Changing your run form at this point will do very little for you. Once the tissue is inflamed it won't matter how you run.. it will hurt. I suggest finding a running specialty store to fit you with shoes (Fleet Feet?). Go slow and slowly ease your running into your walking.

    bursts of jogging and running, maybe 30 feet. I am very new to running so I figure if i start correctly I can prevent bad habits that I will need to change later. I have taken a few days off to allow the shin splints to heal up a bit. I want to make sure my form isnt causing problems.

    Matt, you likely need to rest a bet. You may want to substitute the bike and elliptical for an alternate form of exercise. Of course, consulting a clinician would be your best course of action. Generally the shin will get sore from too much too soon. Best of luck!

    I am 32 years old, I had open heart surgery in august of last year. Now that nice weather is here I am trying to get into shape.I started walking at the local park (asphalt surface) and was doing great. could walk forever no issues. I began jogging/running in short bursts and developed shin splints very quickly, very sore to touch. I think I am heel striking, If I switch to landing on the balls of feet it still hurts. I need to buy shoes for running but am not sure what to get. help!

    I was super fit in my teens (thank you 8 years of rep hockey) and never had any injuries. Now that I'm 30, I started running again after ~10 years w/o running (surgery and health probe) and getting medial shin splints. I don't think my foot form has changed. Raising my knees higher has helped tho. Any other points to add?

      if u run bare foot thats the best way to strengthen your shins ankles if your running everyday try running once or twice barefoot. DO NOT get shoes that have lots of support that will just make your body weaking and you'll need to wear shoes like that because your muscles will never get stronger

    • @14cheetah14
      @14cheetah14 10 років тому

      Angus Pimentil thanks for the tips. I'm actually using new balance minimus trail 10 and zeros. Very close to barefoot. The trail 10's have helped for sure

      Wile E. Coyote Angus Pimentil It's important to know that there are many tools in the toolbox. Simply running with less shoe may not be your answer. In fact, we often treat patients who lose a lot of time due to injury caused by running in a lesser supportive shoe. You may even cause worsening of shin splints by removing any support the shoe offers. The best bet is to strengthen your feet through runner-specific exercise and find a knowledgeable individual to fit you properly.

    I have a problem that I don't know if it's shin splints, or that the muscle is just so tight? I don't land on my heel when I run, and the pain is only temporary, so that's why I don't think it's shin splints. I also don't think it's just tightness either, because the pain goes away and then doesn't come back. Would you think it's that I need a better warmup, or should I really try and stretch out the muscle?

    • @runsmartofficial
      @runsmartofficial  10 років тому +3

      Leroy, not landing on your heel is not necessarily the fix for shin splits. In fact, it could cause them. It's about control for most people and slowing the foot down through midstance. Jump over to our site and try some of the workouts with our free trial.

    Hello,
    I used to run on the mid foot earlier but switched to running more on the forefoot... like i never really touch my ankle to the ground and it stays above the ground approx an 1/2 inches at all times... while i run, slow down or accelerate... I am now suffering from posterior shin splints...

    • @suyashsharma5272
      @suyashsharma5272 9 років тому

      Getting back to midfoot besides also giving up on the realrunning (skora) shoes for running on the race track that i used to do, has made it feel better. Getting the old nike/adidas comfort running shoes with my natural mid-foot stride will solve some of the issue for me.

    i have constant anterior shin splint mainly on right leg only...wondering why. my right calf is also super tight, could this be the reason or is it due to heel strike (as per your video above) but why it only on right leg only? wondering why?

    • @andreeaadn
      @andreeaadn 7 років тому

      I tend to favor doing certain motions with a certain leg. If I land (while jumping) with one leg the first is usually the right. My left foot is much more relaxed.
      -> Try releasing your gastrocnemius muscle...
      -> Do some one-leg balancing for strengthening
      -> Take a day or two off when you have shin splints... and massage them.

    I've had several surgeries for a damaged right medial femoral condyle. I run ~25-30k/wk but occasionally get anterior shin pain on that side. I notice my shoe sole wear on the right is greatest on the outer heal. I do quad lifts which has helped a lot (I would not be able to run with them), but the shin splints on that side can stop me for days. I do not heal-strike, but the heal wear seems to contradict that. Is there an insert or or exercise that can help here? I have high arches and use inserts the running store recommended. Thanks for any wisdom.

    • @andreeaadn
      @andreeaadn 7 років тому

      I honestly hated running. In a short amount of time either my ankle, knee or back would hurt. I do not know what it is best for you or if this is overdue, but do 2 things: try new stuff that could help and stop when it hurts. Learn the value of stretching, miofascial release and rest days.
      Here's some new stuff you could try:
      - Start walking barefoot - in parks - both on grass and asphalt. Take your shoes with you. Start with a few hundred meters and build up. After a month or so, try running a short distance. If you do too much too soon, you will give yourself a new source of pain. Expect soreness even from that!
      - Vary the terrain on which you are running - asphalt makes you lazy-striding. Hills, grass. Vary your speed while running. Repetitive motion is not fun, just damaging. Run like a kid.
      - I do not like arch support. It hurts my arches in a matter of minutes. After seeing this video, I can understand why people might find it useful. I run in a cheap wide-toed sneaker or even sports sandals. But that might not work for everybody. My advice to you is: find a shoe that doesn't hurt anything while running for a few hundred meters. And don't jog, you can cheat with jogging. Run.
      - Have fun. Run while it's fun. Run when it's fun. Do some other exercise on the other days. Something you would have done as a kid. Kick around a bottle of water, try to see how high can you jump...

    Is there a way to get rid of the shin splints like very fast ? I have a physical contest that I really need to pass in like 2 weeks. All I need to do is run 2km in 8:30 mins, but my legs started to hurt like crazy when I am running.

    • @alexw9020
      @alexw9020 9 років тому +1

      Damian Radinoiu Exercises mate. DO NOT RUN WHILE YOU HAVE SHIN SPLITS. Take maybe 2-3 weeks off running. Do swimming or cycling instead its less damaging on the leg. Ice pack on the lower leg 10 mins ever few hours. Stretches/ foot taps. stretch cord exercises.
      You have got shin splits either because ur running posture, your feet are maybe in toe or out toe so you might need shoe inserts if that is the case. Or maybe your running shoes are crap or perhaps its the surface you are running on. Also might be the fact you are trying to hard on ur run and ur tibia cant handle the stress. Gradually build up your running distance and speed week by week to toughen the bone and muscle. Google it mate, You wont find many answers on youtube.
      Also is you 2km run is for the Military DO NOT GO AND SEE YOUR doctor it will go on record and you will fail medical and have to wait ages so you are clear !
