Great Information Scotty. Hate that you moved out of the Great State of Tennessee. Just wondering why of all the cars and boo coos of money you have made informing everyone how to fix their own car, why do you still drive older model cars????? And since you have some really expensive cars stored in a vault? They won't be of any value after your gone. ???? Get Ready Jesus is Coming Back Soon.
IMPORTANT... Scotty is the best and he knows way more than me but sometimes he omits information and is occasionally wrong.... LIGHT BULBS.... light bulbs life has a great deal of variation... one bulb May last 1 year and another bulb will last 10 years. It's fine to buy two bulbs but only replace the one bad bulb... Otherwise you might be replacing the one that will last 10 years with a bulb that will last only 1 year. STOP LEAK.... Scotty knows this but he omitted it from the video ...know why you are using stop leak if it is the water pump bearings going out you don't want to use stop leak you need to replace the water pump if it is a hose that is leaking again you do not want to use stop leak. I avoid using stop leak but will admit to recently using some because it is a 10-hour job to repair and it will probably take me 20 hours to repair and tear my hands all to pieces. I recommend using stop leak only in a car you don't give a s*** about and you know the proper repair is going to be a ton of effort or cost.

😂 you're right about the sparkplugs.I once had a brand new 1995 Pontiac Trans Am that I bought brand new in 1995. I rode it to work everyday. I'm 30:49 1998 the plugs began misfiring you could hear it I couldn't get a mechanic to schedule a date to change them because I had to work and they were closed on weekends. So I changed them myself. I changed all sparkplugs in my V-8 engine except for the two plugs in the main back because I couldn't reach them. I drove to work for awhile then one evening on the interstate the car died, the motor stopped and the power steering quit working. And I pulled to the side of road and had to get towed. Running the V-8 engine with the two bad back plugs caused the electronic ignition to go out.
The "we only put new tires on the back" policy is universal to tire shops, and it is stupid. They always state it is somehow "dangerous". The only thing that you can do it either rotate the tires yourself or just pull the front wheels (if you have another car) and bring them to the tire shop to have them replaced.
Iam sorry to loose your channel. Iam a widow,67 yrs old. I've learned so much from you. I have been able to do some things for myself. Thank you Scotty!

This video is a few years old. Notice that he is at his old Houston home.
Dear scotty, I used to download and keep many of your older videos for my own car repair reference years ago. I will do so for this video as well. Thank you for saving me a ton of money in my car repairs
Scotty maybe older than all of us, but he has the knowledge we can obtain through years of experience or just listen to every word that comes out his mouth.
God bless you, Scotty! Over the many years, you have been BOTH entertaining AND informative which is a combination few journalists have been able pull off successfully!
Scotty, I've had that same argument about best tires on the front. What ever happened to customer service? Front wheel drive car, best tires on the front, PERIOD.
I have successfully used Deepwoods off aerosol to clean/restore old headlights to a very usable condition. If you have a newer car, probably just use the stuff Scotty recommends. I found that applying it when it’s about 75° out got the most benefit. Use a lint free cloth, nitrile gloves, and a well ventilated area. Don’t smoke while you’re doing this :-) .give the application no more than 30 seconds (don’t let it dry) then wipe. If you need to repeat, go ahead and do that. I did this with Ford Toyota, Kia and Dodge. It would be best to remove the headlight assembly to clean it. After you’re done And the the headlight is conditioned AND DRY, go ahead and wash it with soapy water and then use the stuff Scotty recommends.
Almost everyone in General Aviation and Gliding uses Plexus on their Canopies. Clean the bugs off with water, then dry with a microfibre cloth. Then spray the Plexus on very leniently, wait 20 seconds and wipe off with a dry microfibre, and the screen is as sharp as a mirror. ( don't wait much more than 30 seconds as the spray will dry.) It re-plasticises the outer layer of the plexiglass to avoid brittleness.
I've used the radiator sealers when I needed it out in the back woods. In my experience it worked quite well as a temporary seal. Got me through the rest of the long weekend and home in one piece. Six months later radiator starred leaking again. Hey saved my weekend camping trip and saved me an expensive tow. These products have their place.
Here's a story for you... bought four struts for my 99 Honda accord. Replaced the front ones first, then had to leave. Noticed when I went over a speed bump or dip in the road, my car bottomed out badly. So once back home, the rear struts were replaced, no more bottoming out. Having all new struts replaced was like driving on clouds. Even my young kids noticed a better and smoother ride. My car had 200k miles on it and thought it was a good idea to change out the struts for a safer drive for better stopping time on a dime.
If they were stupid enough to shut your channel down I would be smart enough to not watch anymore you tube your the best I’m old too but I learn a lot from the master mechanic Scotty so rock on brother
I have my reservations about using cooling system sealants like Bars Stop Leak. I bought a used 1992 Honda Accord for my son some years back. After the engine would warm up, it would begin surging. It would begin to rev up then down. I finally found the root of the problem to be in the Idle Air Control Valve. The small ports that allow engine coolant to flow through the valve were completely plugged with stop leak. I had to take the valve all apart and carefully drill out all the crap that had built up solid in the valve body. After thoroughly cleaning the valve and reinstalling it, the engine ran great. Apparently some lazy previous owner had dumped a lot of this crap into the cooling system to try and fix a leak. I also fixed the leak properly by replacing a steel coolant pipe that was rusted out.
Also when changing your light bulbs, try to wear some type of glove when handling them. Avoid bare hands as any oil on the glass will dramatically cut the life of the bulb.
@@DocMackGarage I see ok nice .i baught a 2008 gs350 from my neighbor love the car i always wanted one of these I see why they are popular and people like to buy Lexus
I d like to thank you I follow your video for more than 10 years from Saudi Arabia you are number one one for me, are honest not like some advertising people from my heart thank Ali
I am glad the "new tires on the rear" argument was mentioned. Logic tells me the front wheels do all of the steering, all of the acceleration on a front drive car, and most of the braking. Why put the tires with more wear on the front? Put the new tires on the front. I do exactly what Scotty says to do.
Most pro drivers will tell you that it is safest to have your best tyres at the rear of the car. Becouse if you lose grip in the front, the car wont spin around but just slides forward intill it hase grip again.
I put Barr’s Leak in my 1952 Ford Jubilee radiator in 1971. Fifty years later it still works. I have added more from time to time but the radiator has never been off ever. Did Ford really mean for their things to last a hundred years? Quality used to be job one you know. I use the brown.
Oh no! Scotty say it isn’t so?!?! Please keep going, you are a solid old school, no nonsense, entertaining, informative, one of a kind! Please keep going, you are like an old reliable buddy 😊
Wasn't UA-cam used in the first place to help others as a blog video channel ? Thus channel is one of the most handy useful and wholesome channels uut there. He's the uncle I never had.
If I lived in your area you would be my go to mechanic. As it is please keep this channel going. It is an incredible resource of wisdom and knowledge. Two things that don’t often combine.
I'm wondering if they have that rear tire policy so that when turning (especially in slippery conditions) it keeps your car from fish tailing. Sure, having the new tires in the front makes sense from a driving and braking point of view, but when you're driving around in less than ideal conditions, having them in the back would be a good idea for more total vehicle control. But as he said, it IS best to buy 4 new tires. If you could put $20 aside every month, you can buy a new set of tires in just 2-3 years (obviously depending on the car and the type of tire). Well before most recommended tire replacement dates.
Here in Argentina even car manuals recommend rotating the tires every 6.000 miles or so (in older cars manuals, it even recommended changing them from left to right! Crazy, ain't it?). The tires in my Chevrolet Cruze have 40.000 miles on them, have been rotated 3 times, and while -granted- it isn't a sport car, it did not feel unstable at any speed it could reach... let alone legal speeds.
Great content. The AT205 works great and sealed my trans leak on my 1995 Ford Taurus GL wagon with 60k miles on it. Seals were dried out. This stuff really works!
Scotty appreciate your videos, Im 50 and having a rough time as i assume as many of your viewrs are having.Your videos brighten my day and stand tall everyone hopefully tomm will be a better day
Mashallah. Thank you Scotty. This brother been doing good positive work for years helping people save money and be more knowledgeable on there vehicles for years.
In the case of Spark Plugs, sometimes replacing just 1 will result in THAT cylinder throwing a misfire code AGAIN. Subaru recommends plugs every 60k. I picked up my 15' STi with 66k on it so I assumed one of 2 possibilities. Either they've all been replaced recently, or not a damn 1. Welp, I was wrong. Cylinder #1 was replaced with a Denso, and the rest were NGK factory plugs. Well past their recommended replacement time. Guess which cylinder threw the misfire? #1. Newest plug didn't work well with the others. So naturally I replaced all 4 with NGKs. No more misfires. At all. Replacing in sets is ALWAYS recommended for plugs. Laziness oftentimes results in MORE work over-all. Do it right the 1st time and save yourself extra headaches.
Scotty, All your educational & lessons learned videos are excellent and much appreciated! Keep up the awesome practical education with humor & enthusiasms! I love it!!! You the man! I’ll keep watching & subscribing…
Only matters for low-traction road conditions when you are cornering too hard for the conditions present. Aka it stops the stupid people from killing themselves as quickly. Anyone who's ever tried drifting a front wheel drive vehicle gets it. You get good bite on the rear and less bite on the fronts, and you slide both sets on loose gravel. You have good fronts and bald rears, you slide the rear and psuedo-drift the corner. That's really it. Some well intentioned parent gave their teen this advice to keep them from killing themselves by spinning the rear out in front of the car on a gravel, and they just kept that idea and now spread it from the tire shop they work at.
all big car companies cannot make more money because of mr. scotty, but people are with you they cannot shut your channel down. more helpfull videos to come...😁
Scotty on the bars HG1 blown head gasket repair that you mentioned in the video I have used that stuff and my recommendation is to pull your plugs and see which ones are leaking and if it's just one you're lucky if it's more than one you're less lucky but it still might work I used it in my 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee when it's head gasket blew, and how I fixed it was by removing the two plugs that it was leaking into and idled the jeep until it got to temp, and then let it cool completely, one night of repeating the thermocycles and let it sit for 24 hours to cure it and it was sealed, I took it very easy on that jeeps motor after that and it lasted me a while. I have to let anyone who tries that know DO NOT HIT THE GAS WITH THE PLUGS OUT, IDK if it will damage the motor but I literally just let mine idle to operating temp. Also it is LOUD running a V6 on 4 plugs...So if you're going to do it preferably do it during the day, I had really cool neighbors and I let them know what I was doing and they didn't complain, though I know it was loud AF!
front tires will crown, wearing the out side i. back tires will flat top. yes it is a good Idea to rotate front to back to get the most wear and traction of your tire. never change the rotation of a radial tire, eg. left to right. clock wise to counter clock wise as the tire will go against it's pattern of wear, and will desentigrade.
Huh what? Most tires are designed uni-directional for that specific type of rotation, X pattern. Your concern is solely for mono-directional tires which are generally reserved for performance cars. Front tires will wear on the inside, not the outside. At 20k miles they should be dismounted from the rim, flipped, and re-mounted to put the less worn outer shoulder on the inside to improve traction and the life of the tire.
Thank you for confirming my belief of putting the best tires on the front! I also want to avoid any blow outs on the steering tires, I’d rather the rear tire blows!
In Canada at Kal Tire you must buy 4 new (I bought 4 winters with studs, 14 inch $574 all in, NOKKIAN, a Finnish made tyre), .They don't sell me 2 winters for front only. Company policy.
You actually can cover your headlights with clearcoat, and it wont peel off for ages - it is just that before coating the plastic surface shall not be polished: it shall be fine-sanded.
Interesting point on the front vs rear for new tires. My understanding of the logic was that, in a low traction situation, you want the grippier tires on the back so it doesn’t want to kick the back out when you need to brake hard. I won’t be changing just one axle in the foreseeable future, but it’s good to know there can be other considerations.
Hi Scotty! This vid was awesome for people like me that don't know a lot about the workings of a car. Especially about the tires. I hope you are having a well deserved day off on this beautiful fall day.
I always loved changing headlights on a Chevy traverse when I was a lube tech, paid 6/10ths of an hour. Most people have to remove the wheel well to get to the lights, but I have small hands and can do it pretty quick. Easy money lol. It’d be nice if people could learn how to do some work to their cars. Brakes and oil changes most of the time are so easy. A basic socket set and a pair of channel lock pliers will get you going.
That tire thing is real and annoying. Took my car into multiple tire shops to get a rotation, even left my car for hours in line to have my tires rotated only to be told that they couldn't do it because the higher tread tires must be in the back due to their policy. Not sure if its true but I heard they do not want to be sued for the on in a million chance you get into a hydroplane accident and sue the tire shop. TLDR: Tire shops WONT rotate tires
Super-instructive collection of tips. I know some, if not all, of these came from previous videos, but viewing it like this was very handy. Please keep it up Scotty!
I must thank you for all the tips on cars. Honestly I greatly benifiting your videos for free. Keep on your good work. I am a Malaysian but I feel as I if have known you for a long time.
I saw an advertisement for putting little beads inside your tires and they supposedly balance your tires every time you drive it. Is this really true? Please give us the true lowdown on this please. You rock Scotty.
If you do anything diy definitely get an online subscription to something. Even if you don't do anything diy, I would still recommend it; you can at least get an idea on parts and labor that a shop will quote you for a repair. I like the interface for all data diy over Chilton but they're both a solid choice!
That's the best video you ever did. I've been putting my 2 best tires on the front for decades, even when the "experts" (like Dad) said otherwise. And I only own and drive RWD vehicles. The front wheels do 90% of the braking and 100% of the steering!
You want your best tread on the rear. If the front brakes loose on bad tires you can recover from it. If the back brakes loose on bad tires you're going into a spin. You are not recovering from that. Both situations are dangerous, so it's best to have good tires properly rotated.
Scotty I love your channel but I would like to know why the AP 205 caused my 2005 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 LM 7 Valve Stem Seals to Fail in dramatic fashion. I added the AP 205 for a main oil seal seeping problem and followed the exact directions, 48 hours later I had huge blue smoke billowing from the exhaust at startup and oil consumption increased from 1 qt of pennzoil 5w30 platinum every 3000 miles to 1 qt every 500 miles. After 2 months of this I pulled the valve covers and replaced the valve stem seals which restored oil consumption to 1 qt every 5000 miles. Since you have extensive experience with all types of engines I would like your honest knowledge if you have experienced this issue with any similar GM engines in particular. Thank You for what you do and keep up the good work.
ATP205 Reseal is an emulsifier. Old factory valve stem seals may have been marginal anyway. I am a 1st gen SBC guy. Never worked on any Chevy V8 past 1986. I do know that the Cam Companies like Comp, etc sell Teflon Seals that required the machine shop to mill off the top of the valve guide to install the Teflon seals. I have a four banger Chevy that one of my kids used Royal Purple and 2 years later when he gave it back to me, it had developed a rear main seal leak at 144,000 miles. Tried the ATP205. Seemed to make it worse.
I’ve replaced the front and rear main seal of my car many times, still leaks. I’ve used that AT-205 stuff as recommended by Mr Kilmer. STILL LEAKED. Somehow, replacing the rear main seal for a 4th time fixed the leak. Now I freak out because “if there’s no oil under it, there not oil in it,” but there is.
What a Joy, to watch your Extremely very Informative videos Sir. What a shame if your Channel was shut down. You my Friend are a very Good and Honest person. Giving people the Truth about the car Industry and Helping people when they are deciding to Purchase what is a Big Purchase for them. I have really enjoyed watching your videos Scotty. Thank you very much. Regards. Jonathan.
Or, get calipers from the self-service wrecking yard. Look for a vehicle that has good brakes and you'll probably get a good one. Vehicles end up in there because they need too much work or can't pass an emissions test. Sometimes they sit for a couple of years out of registration before the owner calls the wrecking yard. Bad brakes is not the typical reason.
I've always believed the best tires should be in the front. Sure, a deeper tread in the back may help prevent fishtailing but what is far more likely is hydroplaning. A deeper tread in the front is the best defense. I haven't found a tire dealer that agrees with me yet after decades of driving. I've always suspected that knowing the front tires wear quicker is why they want the lesser tread tires up front so that they can sell you two more tires sooner.
In a front wheel drive car. There is a good reason to put the better tires in the back. IMHO it is easier to manage the front slipping out, than it is to manage the back coming around.
Power steering? Best stuff is Lucas. In my experience. But, when you have a power steering leak, look for bad hoses, fittings and connections before you look for a problem with the pump or rack. Lucas will stop or reduce many rack leaks. Worked pretty well with the notorious Oldsmobile Alero my former girlfriend had.
One interesting fact about Plexus is that bush pilots (and many others) substitute lemon pledge. It has to be the lemon in particular. It is claimed to work even better than the Plexus. I haven't done any extensive testing, however I have used it and it does give good results for aircraft plastics.

I love Scott. Just wish he’d SLOW down and let me write down the product.
Also when changing your light bulbs, try to wear some type of glove when handling them. Avoid bare hands as any oil on the glass will dramatically cut the life of the bulb.
Do you take of neg cable? I bought only 1 for my back brake light. The others work. 1 bulb cost me $1.17.
The most standout thing which ages the car is the headlights. That Lexus ES300 or ES330 looks great now.

I am glad the "new tires on the rear" argument was mentioned. Logic tells me the front wheels do all of the steering, all of the acceleration on a front drive car, and most of the braking. Why put the tires with more wear on the front? Put the new tires on the front. I do exactly what Scotty says to do.
Enjoy spinning around and around when you steer sharply in the snow.
I rotate my tires at every oil change so I usually replace all 4 at the same time.
Me too, even tho I drive a 4x4 pickup, like the grip up front. Usually keep in 2 wheel so I can drift in the winter lol 😂
Most pro drivers will tell you that it is safest to have your best tyres at the rear of the car. Becouse if you lose grip in the front, the car wont spin around but just slides forward intill it hase grip again.
*Tyres,
I put Barr’s Leak in my 1952 Ford Jubilee radiator in 1971.

Scotty, Thank you for pointing out how the new tires need to go on the Front! I’m so tired of arguing with Discount Tire and there scammy ways.
Good luck finding any! Lol

Good advice, Scotty. Technician, as you for 50 years. Keep up the good work.

That AT 205 is good stuff! Scottys right on it stops leaks while you look at it! Expensive but worth it!
Ive used Bars-leak in 2 Chevys that had the v6 Intake manifold leak that happened with the Dex-cool systems in the late 1990s .
It worked great .
Whenever I used that type of sealer I never had to keep using it. The softened and expanded seals kept there condition for years with the one use.
Glad I watched. Tire Kingdom told me all 4 calipers went out at the same time. I had no choice as I was out of town & was where towed.
Scotty sure does know his stuff. I highly recommend you checking out his other videos.
I started using Plexus on motorcycles too a couple decades ago. I use it on my computer/tv screens as well.
Scotty - Hello from Nebraska! Enjoy your channel and your decades of common sense / experience! Take care of your vehicle and it'll take care of you!
Thank you for confirming what I always knew. Tire places would tell me to put the better tires on the back. That makes no sense at all.

You are such a legendary human, Scotty. Much love from New Zealand
JB Weld and liquid sealants have been my best friends
PLEXUS is mostly used on general aviation airplanes that mostly have plexiglass windshields and windows
Another good reason to put newer tyres (better tread) on the front, is it's easier to get out of a rear wheel slide than a front wheel slide!
I used AT-205 2 oil changes ago and it stopped my rear main seal leak! Haven’t used it since and still no leak!
Thank you for all Videos you share on UA-cam, I do believe that any mechanic schools need to see these videos in there school to make them smarter
front tires will crown, wearing the out side i. back tires will flat top. yes it is a good Idea to rotate front to back to get the most wear and traction of your tire. never change the rotation of a radial tire, eg. left to right. clock wise to counter clock wise as the tire will go against it's pattern of wear, and will desentigrade.

Best tyres all round is preferable
In Canada at Kal Tire you must buy 4 new (I bought 4 winters with studs, 14 inch $574 all in, NOKKIAN, a Finnish made tyre), .They don't sell me 2 winters for front only. Company policy.
You actually can cover your headlights with clearcoat, and it wont peel off for ages - it is just that before coating the plastic surface shall not be polished: it shall be fine-sanded.
Clearcoat has still yellow effect after few years, next I will try transparent foil
Yep , then once cured , polish lightly and apply wax.
This process never worked for me. 2 years later, my headlights looked like they had cataracts
@@medvedmarek Or try a better clearcoat. Mine has no yellow effect, after 5 years.
I love your common sense and honest approach towards çar maintenance. You are a true professional and master of your trade! Keep it real brother.
We love you Scotty if this truly was your last, it was quite a time 🤟
That tire thing is real and annoying.

I've used the atp reseal and it's great. I added it in an old camry and it worked great. Scotty knows his stuff!!!
Thanks for the tip. I have a Toyota 4 cyl. pickup with 224,000 miles - it is still running perfectly so I keep my fingers crossed.

I'd be so happy if I had a 1/4 of Scotty's knowledge!❤👍

I’ve replaced the front and rear main seal of my car many times, still leaks. I’ve used that AT-205 stuff as recommended by Mr Kilmer. STILL LEAKED. Somehow, replacing the rear main seal for a 4th time fixed the leak. Now I freak out because “if there’s no oil under it, there not oil in it,” but there is.

Haven't been able to find the 205 reseal anywhere yet. But then with 100 Million people no longer in the work force, our country is going down fast.
Stay safe and say blazing my friend 🔥🍃
