I just was given a XRU 09 trimmer that looks to be discontinued and was used for a year or so I am guessing. The XRU 15 is the newer version with 3 speeds rather than 2 like this one has. Two seems to be enough for our yard and I got new batteries (5amp) and it runs great. I will never use it as much as it was used so it will last a LONG time. Really well built, those brushless motors are impressive.

I bought this about 8 months ago because of this video. My favorite part is storing it for months and being able to use it right away every time. When before with my gas one I would have to spend time cleaning the carb and sometimes just giving up on yard work for the day because of maintenance on it.

I have this exact trimmer and have used it for a year now. I really like it, my only gripe is it needs to be longer for taller people, I'm 6'1" and my son is 6'4" and after about 20 minutes my back is killing me from the hump over effect. My solution is to extend the aluminum pole to make it longer thus no more humped over. Because there is only wires in the pole it should not be to hard to Fab up. Thanks for the very accurate review on this model!

Nice demo Dan. You answered many questions I had. I am just over 5' tall, and think this may not be practical for me, since the head does not pivot. (PS. Wear your sunglasses, or some eye protection, I had an eye injury with my smaller Makita cordless trimmer. Very painful while the scratch on my cornea healed.)

I am always impressed by what brushless motors can do these days! I run the Milwaukee combi system (trimmer, edger and hedge trimmer) and the blower. I love it. I used to own all gas and hated it. I am just missing a mower and I'll be set (Milwaukee has nine out yet)... and a snow blower also. My Ariens will be tough to let go though lolll.
I like the reverse feature! It is not an option on mine. Can you actually cut with it though? I am left handed and when doing my flower bed edges, I have to walk into the bed to prevent the grass trimmings from flying into the bed itself. Right rotation and having the unit on the left side is not the best. Having reverse would be perfect for that.

I just bought a new one and they must have change it since. It’s now got an easier line feed things that you don’t have to pull apart (loads from the top).
I did find I had to stoop down a bit but I’m also 6’5”. I was hoping it was just an adjustment.
Overall I love this thing because you just pick it up and go. No smells or mixing fuel. My 36v Makita blower compliments it nicely as well.

@@jaradrockley I have the 21” self propelled Makita mower that you can get for $699 and it is an absolute BEAST! Makes my Toro gas mower obsolete. My back yard flooded during the last winter season and took out my gas mower in my basement. I replaced it with the Makita mower and by the time I got it, my back yard grass was as tall as me. Im 5’10”-6’1” depending on what convenience store im leaving. I actually used the makita hedge trimmer to cut the gras to about 6”. From there I set the mower on it. And when I thought I would bog it down, it just kicked into high gear. The bonus is right now you get a total of 4- 5 Amp hour batteries and a dual charger in the package for $699. The cost of the batteries and charger come to about $500 if bought separately. Makes the mower a steal.

No problem, I now have a newer model which may be a bit better but my father has adopted this trimmer and uses it for hours every day ( no exaggeration) cutting the kind of under brush in the video and it is still going strong to this day. The only down side is that the woody brush eats through the trimmer line pretty fast but that has nothing to do with the trimmer! Thanks again.

You should go for the blade with that kind of grass. In Japan all the Makita trimmers come with blades by default, like a sharp circular saw blade. Would work really well for you, just have to find out if Makita can sell you their blades in your area.

I finally made the purchase and tried it for the first time. Awesome, really impressed. I haven't read anything in the manual yet but I don't understand how to feed more line out. I haven't put any new line on it yet so maybe there just isn't any extra, but the classic bump feed doesn't seem to be working.

The debris shield on yours is more substantial than the one makita now ships the XRU15 with. It's about half the width. I wish there was a way to get the older shield.

I have been studying the Makita LXT 36 volt products for quite some time and they all look very promising. This string trimmer has one flaw that keeps me from spending my money on one, that is the trimmer line replacement. If Makita would change over to a speed feed head, I'd be in for one.

Yes, those OEM Makita trimmer heads are abysmal, which is very surprising given the quality and innovation that Makita's engineers bring to the market with their power tools. But the feeding of the line is not the worst part of it, (many companies use pretty much the same system of feeding the line into the head). The biggest problem is the bump action that releases the line when the strings get short. It's a hit and miss. Sometimes you have to bump that s*** multiple times without any result. It's gets frustrating fast, especially when you're running a business. But the solution is out there - using a head from another manufacturer. Many professionals use the Echo Speedfeed head that eliminates dissasembling of the head completely. I won't explain how it works here, there are tons of videos showing their clever system in detail. I find the Speedfeed head to expensive for a small upgrade it brings in the way you're feeding the line. I use Husqvarna's T35 trimmer head. The feeding system is similar to Makita's, but the operating experience is smooth as butter. The line gets out of the head very easy and just the right amount of it. T35 also proved to be much more durable than Makita's head or even the Speedfeed.

String goes around clockwise if the base plate faces you (side with printing and hole).
String goes around Counter-clockwise if the base plate face you.
But don't forget that we are referring to the direction the string goes around the hub...
so if instead you are focusing on the direction you spin the hub when holding string steady in your fingers (like Dan), then spin the hub the opposite of the above.
Geesh, maybe it's easier just to forget it all and try whatever you want, then if it doesn't work you know to thread it the other way!
Anywho, from his perspective Dan is facing the nobbed end (not hole) facing towards him and moves the HUB clockwise - that's my story and I'm sticking to it (and will continue to look for my comment most every time I rethread (or eventually scribe the direction on the hub!)

Ive had mine as long as dan, if you use 4amp battery it lasts for at least half hour, ive put 2 6amp in an cut loads an then they still had half left so used I'm up in my grinder. I think unless you're a farmer or company doing lawns, I would not worry about run time. It's that powerful and quick ive always been done before the battery.

It really depends on what you are doing with the weed eater. We have found that it will cut tall grass and small brush for around 45 minutes - an hour. However most people will not use it non-stop so it is a little hard to say. Hope this helps at some level.

My 18 year old Echo string trimmer is about to crap the bed. Maybe it's time to go battery. Since I'm already heavily vested in Makita, this seems like the logical direction to go. But here lies my dilemma. Makita offers this and other similar models as well as a couple shaft model which accepts different accessories. On that one, the motor is located in the power head along with the batteries. This results in a totally different weight distribution than having it at the opposite end. Before I make this investment, does anyone know which configuration is more user friendly?

I see you're being humped forwards when using the trimmer. This can get very uncomfortable and painful during the longer sessions of trimming. EGO trimmer is, as far as I know, the only trimmer on the market with the telescoping shaft that allows the user to adjust the length of the trimmer and personalize it for their own height. It's a brilliant, although expensive solution, given that a shaft is made out of the carbon fiber. I'm surprised no other manufacturer tried to do that, from the commercial heavyweights like Stihl and Husqvarna to Makita or DeWalt.

Makita are disgraceful the way they deal with recalls. I’ll never buy a Makita product again because of the way they dealt with my situation.
I bought a Makita line trimmer.
I used it a handful of times, 5 at most, until I realised it was defective a couple of years later and found there was a recall notice on it.
I took it back to have it ‘repaired’ by a Makita authorised repairer.
After I got it back, I spent months trying to get it working without any success, then just started borrowing line trimmers from friends and family.
I tried to get it going again this year and took it to a Makita service centre at Keilor Park in October and they said an angle grinder had been taken to it and that's why it’s not working. I dealt with a donkey national service manager who just had a good laugh at my predicament and suggested I did the damage - brilliant customer service!
Other donkeys I dealt with at this place didn't have much of a clue either.
My advice is to avoid Makita products.

Wow, sorry to hear about your experiance. Honestly though, no power tool manfacturer is great on warranty and replacement help. (Unless you happen to be part of a huge construction company and the regonal sales people are trying to keep you happy. Seen that first hand with B&D.) I just tried to have my Festool vaccum repaired by an authorized repair location but they said that Festool no longer provided parts for it so too bad. I don't expect a power tool to last more than four or five years so I don't even bother with the store warranty. If you find somthing better, let us know. Thanks.
