Just bought one based on this review. Just smashed out my 1000m2 yard in tropical Darwin. Next to my Makita 36v chainsaw this is the best piece of kit EVER. $299 for the skin, a 4ah battery and the new fast charging battery station. Unbelievable value. Top performance for everyday backyards. You can't go wrong with Makita battery tools.

Yep you sold me on it. I have an old Stilh 55r. Finally giving me trouble. I have only had it in the shop a few times. Really good product. When it wouldn't run today I was 30 miles from the Stilh dealer. Had to load up the truck, go to the dealer, get the parts, go back to the shop, install the parts and then back to the job that only took 15 more minutes to finish. Needless to say I choked the old rascal a few times and thought about bashing it on the driveway. Yeah I kinda lost it with a few choise words thrown. I have many Makita products with at least 4 extra sets of batteries. You jetting around and one handing it pushed me over. Thanks!!!! They have 10 in stock at the Home Depot near me.
Man, I COMPLETELY understand everything you just described. I love my Stihl but MAN it was a beast to start sometimes and rattled my arms off! NIce one mate. I just bought one this evening and had to give it a test run. The brushless motor sound makes me think I'm launching one of my RC planes, which has been known to make me nervous, being a rookie pilot! This "whipper snipper" as we say in Oz seems to be pretty robust and gets through the thick stuff OK. Thanks for the demo - well done and cheers from Sydney, Dave

I wanted something light weight and capable of cutting. This little string trimmer is just that ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . The battery will last about half an hour. It cuts through most weeds and grass. I wanted to see what this trimmer could do and tried cutting down some brush. It does okay with light brush but heavy brush, not so much. This is a great tool for trimming around the yard. It's not great for clearing out brush but no one would expect it to be.Out of the box, this trimmer is extremely easy to use. All I had to do was attach the guard and load the battery.

I just got the kit with the trimmer and the blower they are both awesomely powered.
Haven't decided if I will sell my Stihl brand equipment. It's nice to be able to grab these tools and go do a little work without smelling like two stroke.

Well your video sold me. I just sold my Stihl gas weed eater this past weekend and I have Makita tools and batteries but I was going to buy the DUR181Z because of price but I'll spend the extra money and get the DUR187LZ. Great video and goddamn that concrete driveway is the sexiest.

For anyone interested, Home Depot has this item listed at $150 right now. Makita is trying to push their new 36v models, which have a more powerful & efficient motor, with longer runtime. With that said, I will be buying this 18v brushless model this weekend because I don't really have the need for the bigger version.

@@jaithevegan Great question! At the very bottom of the spool mechanism there is a rounded bump. When you are spinning your feed (using your weedeater) it is spinning very fast, when you tap it on the ground the bottom "bumps" pushing up the plastic and releasing some of the plastic line allowing it to "feed" out a little bit. Hope that helps!
Does the string get wrapped to the RIGHT OR LEFT does it matter?
Great review, I had been waiting for the fuel to hit a sale, but this Makita looks nice…..first one to offer a good deal gets my money, since I have batteries for both. Great content as always, we need to get you on belts and boxes…..Maybe they have featured you before and I missed it.

Welcome to the future. Battery powered equipment has come a LONG way! You need to try hedge trimmers too. I have a gas Echo and a battery powered hedge trimmer. I ALWAYS grab the battery powered one.

Thanks for your video, I was having problems with the head flying off, I had forgotten to use the ellen key to tighten the head when putting it on, saves an embarrassing trip to the dealer.

Nice video thank you. The trimmers are new to me. How do you increase the length of the cord once it starts to wear out?
Thank you for the kind words. The trimmer has a "bump" feed to allow more line to extend out of it as you go. When the line runs out, you can refill the spool, similar to the way you would refill a tape dispenser. Hope that helps!

Awesome brand I find the gas ones hard to use personally remember we had a Black and Decker battery one but unfortunately back then the battery technology wasn't as good as it was now but it cut very nicely really enjoyed it minus the slow charging and cost to replace the battery was almost the same as we paid to buy the whole set but apart from that all was good but I know technology has improved a lot since then
Right on! Yea I’d say that the battery tech is way better now so much so that I bought into it.
I was skeptical on the power of these battery tools and got myself 18v x2 (36V) model, I was so wrong. At the slowest speed it is already pretty strong, such a nice upgrade over the gas ones.

Hey Andrew, just bought one of these yesterday & have just finished putting it together with help of your video...thanks for great video. I read a comment down below of a guy saying you don’t have to bump the head to feed the line, he says that it’s meant to automatically feed the line through when it gets low...is this true or do I still have to tap the head on the ground to feed the line? Sorry for my ignorance but I’ve never used an edge trimmer before & have just moved into a house from an apartment.
Hi Michelle. Thanks for the kind comment and great question. You absolutely have to bump the line to feed more of the line out of the spool. I typically just stop and bump a few times in the grass. Enjoy your new toy!

I did find some steel blades for less then $20 that operate like a beast and you won't have to deal with the string game. I will send you the link if I find something long term. Do you know what size Arbor it has becuase my hasn't arrived yet? All these replacement heads seem to be 1" Arbors.

I have a slightly older model. The LH or RH respooling directions were confusing. I went with LH as did you as shown in your video. How is this considered LH?
Honestly I have no idea! I assume it is left handed? I went with the "trial and error" approach. lol

All of our tools are DeWalt, so was really bummed to realize that the shaft on their string trimmer is just too long for my 5'3", 68 year old body. I find I'm bending backwards so it doesn't go too far down. I landed on your review through a search engine. Question: Is the model reviewed adjustable? Ours is 39" and WAY too long for me. Husband is 6'3" and works for him but I'm an impatient sort and want to do it myself. Also, can you put pre-loaded string cartridges on rather than playing with the string? I think that part may lose me. Too impatient. Thanks for your review and glad to hear it's still going strong.

I got a question that puzzling me for a long time. Can you help me answering this?
My question is:
I used to have an electric trimmer similar to this one and the theory of how it works is by spinning a thin plastic wire to cut the grass. The problem I had was the wire keep breaking into two pieces after about every 30 seconds when I was trimming the wild grass. Out of curiosity I wonder whether the trimmer that professionals are using the same kind of plastic wire?
Hi Mike. Hmm. I don’t know. I know for me I use the Makita branded plastic and don’t have any issues unless it gets too long and the metal cutter on the edge of the guard cuts it down a little. Maybe another viewer can help with input.

Hoping for some help. I have the subcompact tools with 2ah batteries. Should I save money and purchase tool only, or do you recommend the 4ah battery kit? will 2ah lessen the torque/power? thank you in advance whoever answers.
Great question! I don’t think the 2ah will lesson the power at all. I just think they won’t last as long. I’d get the bare tool and see if it works. If not you can always snag a 4ah whenever they go on sale. That’s my honest take.

I cannot get the spool off to replace the string. No matter how I press the tabs in and try and pull it off it won’t budge. Any advice?
Man that sounds like a manufacture defect. I would contact Makita or the store you bought it from. Sorry to hear that happened. I've had no issues.

One quick comment after owning this product. Buy all your string direct or Makita brand. You can not hardly wear this stuff out they make. I am going into my second summer and I have only had to replace that string twice. That is probably in 50 to 75 uses! I don't know what the plastic is made of, but it is as amazing as the trimmer!!! A bit pricey but all Makita stuff is. I own about 5 products and and getting more as needed.

I'm stuck between this and the Milwaukee. I like that with the mil you can exchange attachments. Edger, saw, etc. But I like the price of this one waaaaay more and I plan on going all in on mikita power tools so the battery unison would be nice.
I felt the EXACT same way. I almost bought Milwaukee. My neighbor had the Milwaukee and I was able to test it. It is a great string trimmer. Very powerful. However it is much heavier, bigger and I didn't have any Milwaukee batteries. Since I already have the Makita Cordless track saw, that uses these same Makita batteries and I wanted a lighter trimmer, this was the right call. Good luck with your decision!
@@diywithandrew I went with the mikita, after doing more digging at 2am I found that the huge 9ah bats on the mil could overheat and burnout in hot temps. Gets 100+ here regularly. Plus as cool as beast mode products are realistically the worst thing I'm going to wack is like dandelions. Gives me an excuse to buy more mikita tools
I have both and the Milwaukee is heavy and very unbalanced. Yes its powerful but weight is a concern and honestly i think makita batteries hold charge better.
You forgot 2 things: On the head assy there are actually 2 nuts/washers. The heavy one and the light thin one. I think the heavy one goes in first so the flat side is facing out. The thin one follows to keep grass out of the inside of the head. Then, the head screws on counter clockwise! Then as you mentioned stick an allen wench in a side hole to hand tighten the head. Skip this step, and the head will spin off when you stop the unit.

I don't understand why you keep on bumping the cord. I have had a spool strimmer (yep that's what we all it in the UK) for years. These things are auto feeding so anytime the cord cuts, it automatically extends. This continues until the cord runs out.
I addressed that in the video. Since it was new I didn't have a feel for when the cord ran out. And I've had a lot of experience with the trimmer needing a "bump" to auto extend the cord. Thanks for your comment!

Does not have a telescoping feature? We have other String Trimmers, but they are too long (or tall) for me. I was on the web the other day ... and I thought in a review I read, there is a Makita that has a telescope feature. ... I have a cheap [and short] Black & Decker that is an electrical plug in. It does not have much power for the grass and areas that need weed eating on our property. The thing I like about the Black & Decker -- it is "short". [senior female that has lost height with the passing of time]

just sold me on this. im going to buy the one that comes with a 4.0ah battery just so i have the extra. i have the makita drill/driver combo with (2) 2.Ah batteries read the online manual and my batteries are compatible so i will have (2) 2Ah and (1) 4.0Ah i use this for my little side lawn business as i can charge the batteries from yard to yard with my power inverter in the cig lighter port. i currently have a crap and decker and only get about 10 mins of weedeating on each 2.0ah battery

The amount of bars showing can be 25% out in terms of how much has been used depending on whether it just dropped from 4 to 3 or just about to drop from 3 to 2.

Man I can't tell. All I can say is what battery amount (bars) was left after I completed my yard.
In your video it looks like you used a 5ah batt- just wondering how long the 4ah which comes w unit will last?
Did you not think the shaft was to long? Is it adjustable?
I think the length is great. This model is not adjustable. (That I know of)
I've been searching all day for a cordless because I've only known gas. This seems like a great overall idea since Makita tools are great and the battery will be interchangeable. I was going to end up with a Greenworks or something but the reviews were kind of mixed. I don't have real thick brush but how is the Makita up against thicker weeds? Thanks
Thanks for sharing. I also like the compatible batteries with other tools of mine (I actually just got the mower and will review soon). I haven’t tested against way high weeds but have no reason to thing it’s wouldn’t perform decent. But again I did only buy this for my personal yard and not for commercial application.
I have the same model as you have. I didn't like the rear protector because it is too small and short. While I was trimming the grass, my left pant (below the knee) was stuck with grass. So, I decide to add a 12" W x 5" H black plastic thin sheet onto the original one. It stops 95% of the debris.

So I bought this recently and I have a question. Does anyone else's batteries die super fast? Like within 20-30 minutes? Even after a full charge?
I hope you can get some good feedback here. As for me 20-30 minutes depending on your use snd battery ah seems like a good runtime. I use 4 & 5 ah batteries.
Yo! You seem to respond to comments so here's a quick question from Eastern Europe, where our lawns are probably dense jungles for ya.
I usually trim with my very little brushcutter, it's a small petrol powered boy, my father bought it around 2003, it is a Stihl FS 350! I use it for trimming. Like, rarely! Knee high grass cant be done with lawnmovers especially with varying ground elevation, crapload of mole hills and in between lots of trees. Next time, when I have my own money, I want to buy an electric one (battery ofc), but Stihl's highest offering is at the "130". FSA 130. I probably could not live with what I saw most US citizens use, the FS 89, but the 130 seemed powerful when I borrowed it from a store (they allow it for regular customers), but the whole battery thing from stihl is laughably expensive. Can you check out some high-end battery brushcutters, either with trimmer line or the 3-blade tool that can do 4 inch high, very dense flora? It is such a nice place you got to live, my man. It's all grass. Most of us here, step out of the front door and we have all kinds of unknown vegetation right in our face, it is really a magic how can you guys manage such nice lawns.

@@diywithandrew Thanks for the fast reply! I can't seem to access prices for my country, but checking the reviews, it's $180 for the DeWalt and about $300(Canada) for the Milwaukee. They seem pretty good, but considering the reviews for the DeWalt it looks like it has motor issues, but the more unknown brand (for me at least) seems powerful, and by the reviews, it is. I'll try to contact them if they're in the country and ask them for a demo spin, as said, I really want to go green, it's all my dream getting rid of gas power, but I have to find something with both juice and runtime, not necessarily at the same time. Really glad for the findings, thanks again. A quick question if you do have some time, can we access data regarding their power? I mean, electric cars have a kW (not kWh) rating for power, and they run on batteries. So I find it unconfortable to see cordless drills and battery equipment with only torque data and not watts. I tried extrapolating with given runtime on a certain x Ah battery, and found the FSA 130 to be around 200-300 watts which is very very low compared to the 1.6 hp of the gas one, so if you do have any info about that, I would be moe than eager for that! Great question, Ken! Since it is electric there is no risk of gasoline being unable to be sucked into the engine and stall out. I just turn it over in my hands and good to go!
