Can an 18-volt String Trimmer Really Do the Job? Makita XRU12 Review

- Home Depot sent us the Makita XRU12 18-volt String Trimmer for review as part of their #thdprospective program. #sponsored #homedepot
As a user of their 18V X2 string trimmer, we knew that 36-volts was definitely a winner, but how would a single battery XRU12 string trimmer do? For the typical suburban American lot of 1/4-acre, this will be a perfect string trimmer to manicure the yard. If you're letting it get overgrown and not keeping it maintained, then maybe you should step up to the Makita X2 string trimmer.
You can choose from 4 speeds, Low, Medium, High, and Auto (4K, 5K, and 6K rpm). The 'Auto' mode will stay at 4,000 RPM and switch to higher speeds when it senses a slowdown. ie. More torque is needed. The Makita XRU12 string trimmer will speed up, cut through the tougher area, then slow down when it needs to. This extends battery life and runtime.
You can get the Makita XRU12 from the Home Depot for just $199. This includes the string trimmer, the 4.0 Ah battery, and the charger.

Thank you so much for the informative review. I bought one from a neighbor and didn't know anything about it, now I do!!
I wanted something light weight and capable of cutting. This little string trimmer is just that ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . The battery will last about half an hour. It cuts through most weeds and grass. I wanted to see what this trimmer could do and tried cutting down some brush. It does okay with light brush but heavy brush, not so much. This is a great tool for trimming around the yard. It's not great for clearing out brush but no one would expect it to be.Out of the box, this trimmer is extremely easy to use. All I had to do was attach the guard and load the battery.
very helpful, thanks.
I just bought this trimmer. The charger included doesn't have the fan function like the makita DC18RC which I also have that came with my drill driver and impact combo. The fan function is on that charger
Super helpful video - told me everything I wanted to know. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much.
This is a Japanese market trimmer and they use the circular saw blade for tall weeds and grass, not the nylon string head. In this case it can cut well and won't bog down like what you showed.
Great trimmer for the price. Just pick up an extra battery. I have been using makita products for years
At 5:49 you talk about attaching other tools to the power head, but I don't think that's possible. The connection between the power head and the attachment on this model is electrical, not mechanical, like on the XUX01Z (18v), XUX02Z (36v), or EX2650LH (gas) power heads. Also, in Makita's user guide for the XRU12, there is no mention of compatibility with other attachments, and the description of the detachable shaft only says that its for ease of transport and storage.
Came here trying to figure this exact thing out. I want to attach a polesaw to my power head but I don’t think I can with this unit.
It's an ok trimmer. I do yard maintenance for a Living. It works well for trimming. For maintenance I prefer the battery power over gas. But for heavy trimming gas trimmer will always will.
I have maybe 3000m2 of surface for grass trimming, grass is maybe between 0.5 - 1m hight, so my question is, can Makita 18 + 18 V is good for that?
So cheap for these tools in the US. I had to pay 600usd for the 18v x2 plus optional 5Ah batteries and charger. But the trimmer works really well.
The X2 is quite a bit more money than this one, even here in the US. Yes, their trimmers work really well.
Is there any attachment for it
My recent Makita split shaft item included a charger that does not seem to have a fan. My older ones do.
That must be their bottom-tier charger. I thought all their chargers had the fans. I must be mistaking. Thanks for letting us know.
How's the weed trimmer holding up after 3 years?
The single battery Makita trimmer, how would you say it compares to a Echo SRM 225? More powerful or less?
Apples and oranges, really. Hard to compare. The Echo is a 22cc gas, and the Makita battery-powered. It probably comes down to whether you want gas or battery power. Also, are you just maintaining your yard? If so, the Makita will be an easy choice. If you're trying to take car of overgrowth regularly, then you may choose the Echo.
Do all the attachments, like limb cutter, cultivator, hedge trimmer work on the 18V unit?
I was wondering the same....
You can't use attachments on this unit. The motor is in the head. It had wires going down the shaft
Nope it's the 36V powerhead that has multi attachments.
Really badly want a comparison between the 18v 36v and 40v Makita weed whackers.
36v is $$$
Will this model take the tiller attachment?
No, this is not the attachment model. Thanks for watching.
i have one.
powerfull enough for around the house.
battery last long.
dont like the trimmer head swap it for an echo speed feed 400.
Thanks for replying. That speed feed 400 head is a nice option.
Does the Echo speed feed 400 include everything needed to do this? also, is it fairly easy to switch?
Thank you for the video. Can we hook up brush cutter attachment to this Makita XRU12 power head by using one 18V only?
The brush cutter would be too much drag for the 18V. You'd want the 36v for that. Thanks for watching.
No, this model is not compatible with any attachments. The shaft only detaches for transport and storage.
i know it is kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Enrique Briggs Flixportal :)
@Dennis Johnny Thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it !
Have you tried any attachment to the XRU12? It seems the 36V coupled attachments are not made for the 18V units. You think Ryobi attachments will work? Thanks
No, just the Makita attachments work with this unit.
@@Shoptoolreviews the 36V attachment works with the unit?
Joe Peach I was wondering the same! Do the 36v attachments work on the 18v?
5:50 he mentions it
@@JS-.- those 36V attachments probably would not work for 18V power head. Call or send email to Makita technical support.
Will the battery in my Makita grinders an hand drill fit that weed eater to
If they’re 18V LXT then yes.
Could u told me Difference btw Dur365upm2 and Dur369az ? Please , my friend. Thanks a lot. From Brasil
We haven't tested these, but I just looked them up. The UPM is a brush cutter and the AZ is a string trimmer. The Brush Cutter turns a little slower than the String Trimmer, and the Brush Cutter should have a little more torque. Typically, the Brush Cutter is made to cut thicker material (tall weeds and small trees). The String Trimmer is only made to trim tall grass and weeds. Thanks for watching.
@@Shoptoolreviews Thanks a lot! Saved my day. I will buy UPM then! Hugs from BR
@@aliancaverde3062 You've probably worked out by now the 365 is a discontinued model, replaced by 368. The 369 is Makita's newest most powerful brushcutter with motor at battery end, not at cutting head. All 3 are marketed as brushcutters by Makita.
I got some 3.0ah makita batteries. How long would these typically last with the trimmer?
We do not recommend using a 3.0 battery with the trimmer. I don't think you'll be happy with it. Thanks for watching.
@Shop Tool Reviews thanks for the feedback! Is it because of lack of power or battery life? I have two 3.0 batteries and the trimmer I'm looking at comes with a 4.0.
@@natet53 probably like 15min tops. Mine last about 30min on a full charged 6amp battery.
3:36 When youre working for a drug cartel, but also your mom told you to cut the grass.
Lol. True. Thanks for watching
I just purchased a set blower and trimmer I like the blower lots of power for $220 I'm kinda iffy if I want to keep it. Everything was sold out milwaukee and Dewalt so makita was my choice 😔
You won’t be disappointed Makita tools tend to last me way longer
I just bought one of these with the blower and a 4amh battery for $156. I couldn't pass it up. I haven't used it yet but I only need it for my yard so it should work fine.
The one battery isn't a problem since I also have four 5amh batteries.
Where?
That was an awesome deal. Thanks for watching and for commenting.
@@user-jc2ez6ig5z It was at my local home depot on the clearance shelf. Nothing was wrong with it though. My local Home Depot has been having amazing deals on Makita cordless tools lately. I got a 36v cordless skill saw a month ago with two extra 5amp batteries for 250 + tax. That normally would have cost almost $500.
Yup I just did at HD also
How’s the blower ?
The correct expression is: "Not everyone needs...".
That feeling when you live in Russia and your salary is $ 500 a month. And 200 dollars is already hitting the wallet quite painfully =(
That's a tough one. Thanks for watching.
lol.
500 a month wouldn’t buy dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant for a family of 4…. The US is such a bad place ..so bad everyone wants to come here. You lost the lotto on life being born a communist. Enjoy your free toilet paper and vodka.
@@kickassclone75 the solution is very simple - we don't go to restaurants, but cook food at home)
And we don't drink vodka, you fool.
At least I don't drink.
And what makes you think I'm a communist? Russia is a free country, And I am not a member of any political stuff
@@Tosnowood Do not pay attention to him Tosnowood, ignorance is abundant with this one, proven in his comments.
Does anyone else have issues installing the head and it not operating correctly?!
Does it not snap into place?
I'm experiencing a problem where the head keeps falling off after letting go of the trigger, it doesn't seem to tighten properly
@@Shoptoolreviews my issue was because I was missing a part that wasn't in the instructions. It must have fallen out in transport or something. Regardless, I returned it and got a Milwaukee trimmer and am WAY happier with the quality and product all together.

milwaukee sucks.. all my brothers m18 tools are trash. Constantly burning smoking on him...
@@ggfcfhvyy9272 yeah I find this comment to be a troll. He could easily just warranty it if it's really smoking. Milwaukee is heavy duty. Based on YT vids, if a tools brand is going to smoke its Dewalt. 🔴🔥💣💥💯
What can an 18v whippersnipper handle?
ua-cam.com/video/33_aCLqFGWM/v-deo.html
The guy cutting with is needs lessons on how to cut. He missing all kinds of spots
do you wear corona outfits when you weed eat?
I disagree… if you have the batteries to switch in this thing will bush wack and never get hung up…. It’s insane
You could have just as easily said when using the single battery trimmer if one battery is not enough to trim your grass just purchase a second battery why in the frikkkken hell would you not say that instead of saying you might need to purchase the twin battery model. Just stupid.
Makita are disgraceful the way they deal with recalls. I’ll never buy a Makita product again because of the way they dealt with my situation.
I bought a Makita line trimmer.
I used it a handful of times, 5 at most, until I realised it was defective a couple of years later and found there was a recall notice on it.
I took it back to have it ‘repaired’ by a Makita authorised repairer.
After I got it back, I spent months trying to get it working without any success, then just started borrowing line trimmers from friends and family.
I tried to get it going again this year and took it to a Makita service centre at Keilor Park in October and they said an angle grinder had been taken to it and that's why it’s not working. I dealt with a donkey national service manager who just had a good laugh at my predicament and suggested I did the damage - brilliant customer service!
Other donkeys I dealt with at this place didn't have much of a clue either.
My advice is to avoid Makita products.
