  • It's good to be back! This week I'm going into a lot more depth about character sprites, specifically on how to generate clear and readable images that will help your work pop off the screen.
    I tried my best to upload my brain on this one and just explain how I think about these topics, so feel free to work alongside me through the video. I'd love to see what you come up with so don't be shy, link me your stuff on Twitter or join us on Discord below.
    Thanks for watching, see you soon for the followup!

    A cool way to practice this is by starting with a random silhouette. I like to scribble some random shape and then fill it in.
    Then I basically play that "What's that Pokemon?" game on my random shape and start making it into something by blocking out some shapes with a few shades of grey.
    The way your initial scribble looks will also often inspire you to use a distinctive artstyle.
    Would recommend giving it a try, if you are new to blocking and unsure how to create silhouettes on the screen from ideas in your head :)

    • @AdamCYounis
      @AdamCYounis  3 роки тому +3

      if you're working on a single sprite, I'd say you could probably get it done in usually less than 16, for sure. Each colour can have four or so shades, and you might use three colours, so 12-16 colours for a single sprite seems really reasonable to me, that's about what I end up with for a character like this..

    Adam, could you make a series creating characters like this from different themes, without necessarily being characters in your game? Well, it's a nice type of video to watch and be inspired by. It would be interesting to see you take one or more random themes and explore that.

  • @sleepmusic-sleepsound5682
    @sleepmusic-sleepsound5682 3 роки тому +3

    Hi Adam! Thank you for making these -- i do want to know how you were able to have it so that your brush was only able to paint on the silhouette you created and not on the transparent background. This would make it much easier for me to play around with colors and not have to worry about going in an erasing colors that bled over the silhouette i created.
    I just subbed, because after comparing your videos to the others out there, yours seem to be the more informative and have the highest quality. Keep it up! I know you're helping inspire a lot of other beginners out there. Also, your Insignia game looks great!

      I'm not sure what program you're using, but there are two options depending on the program! (I don't have the program he's using, so I don't know what the features on it are.)
      There is a setting called Protect Alpha on certain programs, which paints on the silhouette you have created.
      You could also use a Clipping Layer to draw on the silhouette you created as well.
      Hope this helped! Looking up the program you're using can help as well :)

    That looks awesome. I tryna get into pixelart too, since I do create games. What I wonder is, doesn't it make sense if you'd put each bodypart on different layers to animate? I think it's much easier to move each body part around. What's difficultier though is to paint over different layers while connecting the parts seamless. Don't know which method is better to work with.
