    I've noticed that collectibles may have a difficult selling when they exceed $20,000. Even those with money are reluctant to pay those prices. So if the monied class doesn't want to buy, they don't sell at all. Therefore the buyer has to be careful not to pay too much.

    Shawn: Another good presentation (kudos to the finance team for allowing you to splurge close to $4 on the visual aids... I feel it was a worthy 'investment'.) 🙂
    Did you read the recent article on the late billionaire Silvio Berlusconi's 25,000 strong erotic art collection? It's housed in a 34,000 square foot warehouse. He purchased them from late-night shopping channels - but wait, Shawn, there's MORE...
    He often spent between £17,000 & £130,000 in one sitting.
    ***SPOILER ALERT***
    The collection is largely worthless (what a surprise!), and his family want to burn it! On the other hand, he invested in extreme higher-end art (Titian etc.) in his earlier years.
    Just proves that even billionaires - as sordid as Berlusconi was - can be a Timmy, a Kimmie, and a Pointdexter too.
    Keep up the great work, Shawn. 👍

    totally on point - great video - but since almost no one will follow your highlighting safer vs speculative (not too mention suggesting getting as educated as possible in any particular field) and will just stay speculative forever, i’ve got one tiny suggestion. talk to as many collectors as possible. ask them what they’d do if the market goes down (or even crashes) and the overwhelming response is not concern of loss but happy to be able to afford more to add to their collections, you may have found a slightly safer area to speculate - just don’t become convinced that you are buying investment grade items, just that you may be a slightly smarter speculator.

When people ask me why I don't buy more expensive cards even though I can afford it I say "because then it's no longer a collectible. It's an investment. And I'm not trying to do that." • @Pabmyster
      @Pabmyster 10 місяців тому +1

      @GamerStonks the sentiment of the video is quite confusing when you frame it like that. I think the response would be that a market where the peak is $200 is still a speculative market and therefore not a mature market to consider the other catgories worth investing. When you scale the theory back to relative proportions, then I would tend to agree with you. If an immature or niche collector's market places their highest item at $200, you're probably dealing with the rarest of the rare, because only the most hardcore within that market would pay that much for it. Depending on availability and demand, it would probably be the equivalent of the highly volatile hundred-thousand dollar range, because if the niche collector base fizzles out, you have a drop to nothing, but if the market grows, you have a premium item on your hands

    You're correct with all of this, but I think difficult pills to swallow are better done with data. Having clear numbers and showing common examples of investments at each level and the rates of return would do a ton to convince those who have an emotional barriers to understanding/believing these concepts. For instance, revised dual lands are a great example of the $100-$1000 collectible range where many people in the MTG community want to get into "investing" into Magic but have not historically provided a worthwhile rate of return (outside of crazy spikes which are rare exceptions). Just a thought! Thanks for the video.

  • @DeltaFH
    @DeltaFH 10 місяців тому

    I agree with majority of what was said here. Though, wouldn't timing play a factor into these price ranges? I am guessing you had to draw the lines somewhere and in a few years these amounts will be different again. For example during the pandemic hype a lot of extremely speculative collectibles would have been priced up in the pinnacle of investments section, now most would barely be in level 2 speculation. Likewise, with downturn in a lot of the antique markets right now there would be several markets where items that would normally be pinnacles of investments are now priced in level 2 speculation or tier 1 investments. Curious what your thoughts on that are, as well as the importance of liquidity. There's plenty of collectibles/antiques priced in the pinnacle of investment price range that are so painful to move. Likewise, there are a lot of ones in level 2 speculation or tier 1 that are extremely liquid. How would that factor in for you?

    Love the video! Awesome. I am cautious of the horror comics buying that has gripped the market for comics. Especially bronze age since those no one wanted in the 70s. There are long boxes with ungraded copies sitting in warehouses like Milehigh comics that if dumped on the market will deflate the values fast. And they will because if a business has overhead, it has to pay bills and taxes with its inventory, selling with the hype! I am suspect of some golden age as well.

    To your knowledge , have there ever been any collectibles that have run their course organically (gone up in value because of nostalgia and then come down as that generation passes on) and then for some reason or another had a second life years/decades down the road?

      That’s totally up to you, but you also need to look at the opportunity cost of holding on to the items in question.

      Lots of idiosyncrasies that you don’t have in other collecting markets. I usually tell people that unless you are really into wine and whiskey in general, avoid it like the plague if investing.

      @@ReservedInvestments Thank you for the response! It is a market I have been thrust into professionally and seems a little strange, because there is some level of mass-produced scarcity (particularly on the whiskey side of things), it is at the end of the day a commodity and people drink the stuff making organic scarcity a large factor as well. I would love to hear you dig into it some day!

    Sean what are your thoughts on rare items with limited release or awarded copies over $10k? Specifically Pokemon trophy cards, no I’m not talking about your speculative Charizard base set that’s only a 5 figure card because of the PSA 10 grade while other wise the card is a dime a dozen, I’m talking about your actual rare Pokemon trophy Cards with documented awarded release numbers such as 20 - 50 copies, surly you must think differently about these items? Please don’t use the illustrator to explain this point as that card is not as rare as the price would allude. There are plenty of pokemon cards that are far rarer then the illustrator, we have seen the illustrator come down massively in price do to availability, cards like trophy Pikachu cards that have no more then 33 copies awarded of the same art. And many other trophies cards that are in the $10k - $100k price point with 24 - 150 copies awarded.

      Pokemon trophy cards are volatile. If you do the price research, you’ll come to the same conclusion. The time to buy was when they were selling well below what they are now…
