Auction fees alone make collectibles a bad investment, combining that with the opportunity cost versus the S&P and you got yourself a horrible investment. This channel saved me a lot of money ❤

      Hahaha, briliant!
This resonates with me, except I have the struggle between rationality and irrationality... and everything in between.
On one hand, the voices in my head saying "price these to the MOON... and if they don't sell, then keep in your collection" vs. "Don't be a DH... get what you can, take the profit, and rinse and repeat!" vs. "why are you even selling these, you heretic! These will further enhance your collection! Keep them!"
The biggest issue is getting attached to items. I always say I won't... but more often than not, I do!
I know full well what I SHOULD do... but suppressing that greedy voice in my head is often hard. A constant struggle between collecting/hoarding and not wanting to leave money on the table.

at one point I realized, collecting isn't healthy for me. So I made buying and selling a side hustle. Now I get the excitement of searching for the items without the hoarding part.

Collecting can so easily become hoarding. As a coin collector I became a hoarder. I'm in the process of nailing down my collection, selling off what I don't want, and organizing and cataloguing what I do want - until then I am off ALL coin purchases. The point made in the video about defining what you collect is critical. I am in a lot of niches in coins ranging from bullion to world coins - that's a mistake. I am now focusing more on Irish 20th century 1928 - 2000 coins and Philippines key types. I also have a sizeable collection of world coins, which I am in the processing of selling off. Luckily my collection is probably 1% or less of my investment portfolio.

Collecting can easily spiral out of control. I ended up going overboard and getting all this random stuff. Sold off a bunch of the stuff that I really shouldn’t have bought in the first place

I learned a Looooong time ago that I can't be both a collector and a reseller. I had to pick a street and stick to it. That hasn't been easy and other than a few select items that i HAVE decided to keep, I have made the, often times, difficult decisions to sell things that I would have loved to keep. This mindset has kept me disciplined and I'm better for it. Now If I was just a little MORE disciplined, I'd actually finish listing my idiotically large backlog...

    • @RandomGuy-lu1en

maybe it helps to remind yourself from time to time that all popculture collectibles are just trash? If I have problems selling something I ask myself "would I be still attached to the item if it wasn't worth anything?" Most of the time the honest answer is no. The stuff has an appeal because it's valuable. Because other people want it. It's usually that simple.

Another excellent video. A common mistake I see often is people using their collection as an emergency fund. “Oh if I need money I’ll just sell this stuff”. Yes but what if the market is down and what if you need money fast? Then an emergency comes and they sell at a loss or huge discount to raise capital. They also don’t take into account the work and time it takes to sell a collection. It is an emergency if you don’t have an emergency fund.

Enjoyed the video and think there's a lot of useful points for people to consider. I like to think of myself as a collector that collects like a dealer. I look for opportunity in the antique category I collect. Majority of my items are bought below market value and I make friends with dealers to collect hot items first before others and at a small discount. I diversify between unique high value items and very liquid items in the category. The idea is to keep my collection highly desirable for a dealer to purchase down the road, while also having a lower entry point on most items than the standard collector.

  • @4fb182

Great video per usual Shawn! You’ve touched on opportunity cost a lot in past videos and this video. I find the idea of investing in antiques and collectibles so fascinating and alluring. Yet given the economic climate, I can’t help but park extra money into HYSA and the ol’ S&P. Perhaps it’s common sense getting the better of me 😅.
But I hope to learn when good entry points are for certain collecting categories

Boomers: buy my gold, stocks, my bonds and my real estate.
Millennials&onwards: no thanks, I'll buy Bitcoin, Pokemon and One Piece.
Boomers: you have to be smart about investing and look at income-producing assets!
Millennials&onwards: I did; your assets barely keep up with inflation; my Bitcoin, solid crypto networks and collectibles have appreciated multiples higher than your strategy in the past 5 years. Real inflation is under-reported, so high that makes any income-producing yield nearly irrelevant when choosing your investment strategy.
Boomers: But that bubble can pop at any time, and you will regret not choosing the old battle-tested strategy of wealth creation.
Millennials&onwards: I will regret not buying more Bitcoin at $69,000 in 2024, the same way you regret not buying more Apple stock at $2.17 in 2005.
