Case Study: Viewer Asks My Help in Upgrading his Batman 251 to a CGC 9.4 Condition Copy!
The Joker once said, 'If you're good something, never do it for free!' Luckily for you (assuming you are watching this video), I will not be taking the Joker's advice in this instance! After all, I'm Batman...or at the very least Superman, since everyone tells me I look like Clark Kent.
Welcome back to Reserved Investments, the premier, non-hype driven collectibles finance channel on UA-cam. In today's video, a long time viewer asks for help upgrading his CGC 8.0 condition copy of Batman #251 to a CGC 9.4 condition copy. The viewer wants to know if he is getting a good deal and how I would handle this situation. Topics discussed in this video include analyzing the optimal collecting grade of this book and also an in depth price analysis. Enjoy the video...

      This question is dangerous because graded video games are too new and speculative. Based on the information provided though and depending on prices, The 9.6A+ for $5K is the optimal collecting grade.

  • @mattbrosch

    I'd argue that the optimal grade for an ASM 300 is actually 9.6. A 9.8 is around 2800, whereas a 9.6 is around 875, which is a steep discount. There's a much less significant decrease between 9.6 and 9.4. I imagine you said 9.8 due to the number of 9.6 copies on the census (5500) but there's nearly 2k 9.8s. It's not a rare book in any grade below 9.9, and the steep price drop from 9.8 to 9.6, with a much shorter drop from 9.6 to 9.4, would position it as the more optimal choice. That, combined with the fact that the condition differential between a 9.6 and 9.8 is either minimal or nonexistent, makes it the more optimal choice. I'd similarly argue that a 9.2 is the optimal grade for a Batman 251, as its almost half the price of a 9.4, with only a relatively minor drop to 9.0, and they have almost the exact same census count (188 vs 207, respectively). I'm sure you'd stick to your guns, and what is 'optimal' is rather subjective anyway, but I thought it was interesting as I typically agree with your assessments but differed this time around. That aside, I very much appreciate the time and dedication you put into this channel and its subscribers. Thanks Shawn.

    Shawn, as to the frosting on the vinyl cape Jawa there is a method to remove it on a carded figure safely. Also, frosting does happen as result of environment. Most that have a climate controlled room don’t actually have an ideal proper environmentally controlled room for storage. Slight variations in temperature and humidity and not having proper air circulation over time can contribute to frosting along with discoloration.

    Hey Shawn, big fan of your channel. Would love to hear more perspective on sports cards and that especially on vintage baseball cards. I am a collector and I mainly focus on vintage baseball and hockey cards. I do have a strong love for this hobby but I am skeptical that the crazy prices we have been seeing will continue to go up. My reasoning is simple, current and next generation of collectors losing interest in vintage era players, and modern cards losing its value due to over-printing and having too many variations. What is your take on vintage baseball cards (or sports cards in general) and what do you think will be a wiser way to curate a valuable collection?

  • @patiencezero-xc9zl
    @patiencezero-xc9zl День тому

    For that kind of money, you should be able to afford keeping the item in darkness, sealed in a container filled with an inert gas. That may keep the plastic from discoloring for a significant amount of time. It may also help slightly pressurizing the container so as to minimize outgassing from the plastic in a toy like this. Frosting occurs in certain plastics because they often are imbued with olefins or other additives to aid in the manufacturing process. These chemicals, over time, migrate to the surface of plastic substrates and often look like a dusting or powdering of the plastic. It can be removed often or mitigated but not without the application of a counter agent. Also, only in the automotive industry will you generally find plastics of high enough quality to inherently NOT have these issues. Toys are made with the cheapest raw material available, generally.

    • @Gichie79
      @Gichie79 День тому

      Slight variations of temperature overtime which cause expansion and contraction contribute to discoloration of the plastic if the plastic is more disposed to discolor. Frosting can be removed by sunlight, heat of 100 plus degrees for an extended period of time or just putting it under an incandescent 60-100 watt light bulb for several hours.

    • @patiencezero-xc9zl

      @@Jacobey22 well right there is the issue. Modern toys are high risk and are most likely not a long term investment that will appreciate. They also have no business being graded as that market is very small. Modern toys especially stuff made this century aren’t collected based off nostalgia they are collected based off the quality of the sculpture, articulation, paint application, and design. All of which the toy manufacturers are improving and coming out with newer better versions which essentially devalue the previous ones. Add to the fact on modern stuff toy companies will reissue previously items that are sold out and hot on the secondary market. Modern stuff is really only suited for short term speculation and flipping as an investor.

    While I do have a couple of relatively cheap pieces from my childhood this market scares the crap out of me. Too much risk of deterioration like you said. I've been watching Froggy Flips on UA-cam and the thing he and other vendors say a lot is "It's hard to find a good example because most of these have broken down over time". Also, my mothers first business was in vintage toys and I remember she really struggled with it. I'll stick to my cardboard. 😂 Interesting to observe from the outside looking in though. I think not having it on display kills it for a lot of these collectors. They like having their items around them on full display. I've even seen some collectors who leave their collection exposed to sunlight all day which I find baffling. Just buy some blinds! Thanks as always Shawn. Fantastic content.

      Blinds aren’t enough even reflective or filtered sunlight overtime will fade or bleach items. Best to buy reproductions for display in those environments.
