As a west Indian I had a close up view of Lara and went tru all the emotions of his brilliant career.. Lara was flamboyant and daring a pure thrill to behold and the stats to back it up.. People discredit some of the runs made by sub continent batsmen cause of tge docile nature of the majority of the pitches there.. Sachin proved his worth outside of india also.. He has a textbook technique, great timing, and a wonderful mental approach to batting... He faced the same bowlers as Lara and excelled.. These 2 in my opinion had parallel great careers in the same era and I enjoyed them both.... I never liked choosing one above the other.. They were differently beautiful....

He was for most of his career part of a not very strong batting line up so he carried a lot on his shoulder.. I hope you are not basing your cricket education on white ball cricket.. I feel Lara underperformed based on how gifted he was. One reason for it could have been the lack of other batsmen in his team, who performed consistently at a high level. To put it another way, he did not have a Ganguly,, a Dravid, a VVS, a Sehwag that Tendulkar had. This made Tendulkar build a lot of successful ODI and Test partnerships that lead to Sachin's own performances to consistently be at a high level.

Murali rarely bowled to Sehwag in his prime it was only in the later part of his career in a couple of flat pitches that Sehwag had better of him. There were some phenomenal batsmen around during Lara’s time.. what set Lara apart, imo, was his ability to react to the situation of a game or to someone sledging him and just take control of it.. in that sense, he could impose himself on a game and change the flow like a fast bowler does when he gets angry or fires up for a brutal spell.. and once Lara got in that mode, it felt like the opposition was virtually powerless to do anything about it.. even those great Australian attacks were like side acts a couple of times when Lara decided it was all on his shoulders or when someone said something to piss him off.. not many, if any, other world class batsmen were in that same mould where they could just flick a switch and bully and demoralise a bowling side like Lara could
Brian Lara is a wonderful, wonderful batsman to watch and is right up there with the best of the best. Stats alone cannot begin to rate how good a batsman he was. If one would recall there were lots of turmoil taking place in WI cricket during his career yet he possessed that nerve of steel and high levels of concentration to score tons and tons of runs. I shudder to think what could have been in more player friendly environment. So as for the debate which one of these players is the best it dependsof the "yard stick" used. However I would not venture to pick one over the other as they're in different class all by themselves. The both of them are so exciting to watch.

Tendulkar developed his techniques over the years and got better while Lara was naturally gifted and talented player. If you compare early years of cricket for Lara and Sachin, lara was way ahead. Then Tendulkar got slightly ahead of lara in the middle of their careers and in the end of their careers lara was again ahead of sachin. Both are great players but I love to watch lara batting.

Brian has a test batting average of 52, that's not even in the top 10 of all time batting averages. Bradman had a test average of "99.9" per innings. Lara not even close to best ever. Laughable.

In my view, one of his greatest innings was against India at St. Lucia test in 2006. Lara was so restrainful and scored a slowest century in the 4th innings to force a draw from a near certain defeat. If one wants to witness Lara's concentration and his ultra defensive side, his batting in the 4th innings would put even Dravid to shame on a rank turning track. Nothing is more aesthetically pleasing to the sight than see Lara play a defensive stroke with a 360-degree backlift.

Allan Donald talks abt Sachin ,Lara ,Steve waugh in an interview in 2009 , I had been watching Sachin Tendulkar on and off before we (South Africa) were readmitted in 1991. Everything about him is just so exceptional. He is wonderful technically and he has everything - class, speed, all the shots, and he is cool under pressure. Cricketers always talk about his amazing balance, even the Aussies. I've seen tapes of Sunil Gavaskar and if you split the screen between him and Tendulkar, they look virtually identical. I have never seen a man with such immaculate balance - it is freakish. People go to a Test match just to watch Tendulkar. I, for one, would rather watch him than bowl against him. Actually, I'm glad I'll never have to bowl to him in a Test match again, though I've been quite successful against him. He is No. 1 in my book - the best player I have ever had the privilege of bowling to. There's Steve Waugh and there's Brian Lara, who was wonderful in 1995, but Tendulkar is a class above, consistently special. The best knock I can remember him playing was at Newlands in 1997, when he was just unstoppable. We only got him thanks to a blinding catch by Adam Bacher off a hook shot, otherwise he would have gone on and on. Under Hansie Cronje we studied hard for a Tendulkar weakness. We thought he might be vulnerable, especially early in his innings, to the ball that is bowled from wide of the crease, coming back in off a good length. He might then be bowled through the gate, or be lbw, especially on English wickets. We also tried peppering him with short balls - not many top-class batters like that - but it didn't really seem to bother him. The one thing that might rattle him is being restricted. i started life a right hand bat but swapped to left and imitated BC with the back lift and shots when i played club cricket. being ambidextrous i was able to switch hit any shot including drives with my hands still in left hand position. a team mate said he would break his wrists if he tried to do it. i could also play a shot behind my back with either hand to balls going down the leg side.

Lara was love child of a tradition that was fan boy of West Indian cricket. A great batsman indeed, but still protected by lesser scrutiny ,providing umbrella cover to his impact as a batsman. Just take an example … Lara hitting century against Australia in his home ground is considered one of the best. However, Sachin’s knocks in his home country are dismissed as subpar. Whereas, in fact Lara was less successful while batting overseas. In Australia his average is 41 while Sachin is way ahead. Similarly in England too his average is some 800 bp below Sachin. But predisposition conquers rationality so good luck 😅
In my opinion, the classiest stroke player was Gary Sobers; the most explosive hitter and most confident batsman was Sir Viv, and the rarest combination of stroke playing and century-making is B. C. Lara - and will put Sachin among them.

If one would recall there were lots of turmoil taking place in WI cricket during his career yet he possessed that nerve of steel and high levels of concentration to score tons and tons of runs. I shudder to think what could have been in more player friendly environment. So as for the debate which one of these players is the best it dependsof the "yard stick" used. However I would not venture to pick one over the other as they're in different class all by themselves. The both of them are so exciting to watch.

Tendulkar developed his techniques over the years and got better while Lara was naturally gifted and talented player. If you compare early years of cricket for Lara and Sachin, lara was way ahead. Then Tendulkar got slightly ahead of lara in the middle of their careers and in the end of their careers lara was again ahead of sachin. Both are great players but I love to watch lara batting.

He was on track to breaking the record for the most runs in test cricket when he was unfortunately run out trying to sneak an impossible run. In that inning, he didn't give any chances. His observation was correct.My brother was on the Jamaican School Boys cricket squad.

In my view, one of his greatest innings was against India at St. Lucia test in 2006. Lara was so restrainful and scored a slowest century in the 4th innings to force a draw from a near certain defeat. If one wants to witness Lara's concentration and his ultra defensive side, his batting in the 4th innings would put even Dravid to shame on a rank turning track. Nothing is more aesthetically pleasing to the sight than see Lara play a defensive stroke with a 360-degree backlift.

In my opinion the greatest test batsman ever. For the most of his career he played in a team in misery. If not his average and the performances would have been much much better. Undoubtably the most lalented batsman I have seen. He is the finest artist when it comes to the art of battting. Can watch him for hours and hours . It never gets boring.
Lara is an all time great for sure, a pure genius....in terms of talent , Sachin and Lara was on par, but what took Sachin ahead was his dedication towards the game. For Lara, playing cricket was part of life , For Sachin, Life was cricket and only cricket. Lara would party the whole night before the test match, walk in at no.3 next day and score the most beautiful hundred ever or play the most casual shot ever and get out cheaply...

Tests and ODIs he was goat in both formats. No body comes close to Viv. TechnIque wise Gavaskar was best opener as he needed to dig in against quality bowlers playing in an avg team but overall complete dominant game was Viv something else...

I had been watching Sachin Tendulkar on and off before we (South Africa) were readmitted in 1991.
Everything about him is just so exceptional. He is wonderful technically and he has everything - class, speed, all the shots, and he is cool under pressure. Cricketers always talk about his amazing balance, even the Aussies. I've seen tapes of Sunil Gavaskar and if you split the screen between him and Tendulkar, they look virtually identical. I have never seen a man with such immaculate balance - it is freakish.
People go to a Test match just to watch Tendulkar. I, for one, would rather watch him than bowl against him. Actually, I'm glad I'll never have to bowl to him in a Test match again, though I've been quite successful against him. He is No. 1 in my book - the best player I have ever had the privilege of bowling to. There's Steve Waugh and there's Brian Lara, who was wonderful in 1995, but Tendulkar is a class above, consistently special.
The best knock I can remember him playing was at Newlands in 1997, when he was just unstoppable. We only got him thanks to a blinding catch by Adam Bacher off a hook shot, otherwise he would have gone on and on.
Under Hansie Cronje we studied hard for a Tendulkar weakness. We thought he might be vulnerable, especially early in his innings, to the ball that is bowled from wide of the crease, coming back in off a good length. He might then be bowled through the gate, or be lbw, especially on English wickets. We also tried peppering him with short balls - not many top-class batters like that - but it didn't really seem to bother him. The one thing that might rattle him is being restricted. He loves scoring, and scoring quickly, and if he is frustrated, sometimes he goes out and looks for the big shot.
I don't think he really gets rattled by sledging. Glenn McGrath tried it and Tendulkar just kept running at him and hitting him back over his head for four. I think that, like Steve Waugh, sledging just makes him more focused: I don't think it is a good idea to have a word.
Tendulkar is already a legend so I'm not sure how he'll be remembered - what comes after legend? . He's the best in the world, one of the most magnificent players there's ever been.

i started life a right hand bat but swapped to left and imitated BC with the back lift and shots when i played club cricket. being ambidextrous i was able to switch hit any shot including drives with my hands still in left hand position. a team mate said he would break his wrists if he tried to do it. i could also play a shot behind my back with either hand to balls going down the leg side.
