    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx 8 місяців тому +51

That's not the way this works.
She wasn't "cancelled" - the people who make up the greater majority of her audience simply stopped watching because it was awkward for them to jack off thinking about her now with a boyfriend entering the fantasy equation.
I used to be a lot more into Jennifer Connoly until I realised she had been married to paul Bettany for about 20 years - it's kinda an automatic response to feel more awkward about being attracted to someone you know is already taken.
I mean you know, unless you happen to be a sociopath that is - so I take my awkwardness as a good sign that I'm not devolving from an emotionless hermit into a proto serial killer quite yet 😅

I think my introduction to the existence of idol culture in general was about 10 years ago, the video of Minami Minegishi of the group AKB48 crying her eyes out and begging for forgiveness, both from the public and from her group's agency, with a freshly shaved head. Her slight against the public, that resulted in her being demoted from a full member to trainee status? Being caught by the paparazzi going on a date. Mind you, this is an adult woman that is essentially being demoted as far down the chain as possible for going on a date.

this moment, speaks alot of what "japan's idol culture" is.
you don't need to be a literal idol, as long as you are an object of an idolization, you are one.
especially the case if you are one or being made as one.
and being an idol mean you became more or less a puppet to your fans who will dictate what you can/can't do. simply because you are their idol.
you no longer have a freedom to the point you have to lie to do what you want. (i heard some company or agencies even persuade/telling the popular ones to abide to what fans wants to keep the popularity stays afloat.)
at this point, being an idol in japan mean you stop being "human".

That means at least that many people are just in it for the fantasy and know full well what exactly is the product they’re consuming.
So outcry is more like “ok I know you’re selling me a wet dream, and here’s my money. But it’s unacceptable if you introduce other man into my wet dream.”

Sometimes it's not even just related to the romantic fantasy or, in Asmon's case, the relatability factor. It's also that a lot of people rely on their parasocial relationships with influencers to give them stability. Their engagement with streams, broadcasts etc. is their social (and general life) routine. When Asmon gets a girlfriend, the paradigm or status quo changes, and it leaves those people uncertain about what social dynamic they'll have with Asmon going forward, e.g. how often he will stream, whether she will be part of the streams, whether he will quit playing video games, and most importantly, how all those things affect their own sleeping/eating/gaming routine. It's selfishness on multiple levels.

  • @TheRandomMuffinMan

Honestly, I think this idol worship and obsession is from the fact that a lot of people in Japan don’t have a girlfriend/boyfriend. And are using their idol as a substitute. So when it’s revealed that a celebrity has a significant other, they feel betrayed. It’s honestly really sad when you think of it that way. It’s still pathetic and creepy, but also a bit sad I’d say. What’s also alarming is that idol culture is starting to come into the west a bit with vtubers. I just hope we don’t get creepy fans like this here.
Edit: yeah I’m aware we have some creepy fans here as well that do weird stuff like stalking or buying used tissue papers. Don’t get me wrong that the western audience has some really weird fans too. But I’m mainly referring to this Parasocial behavior that fans think their favorite celebrity or idol is theirs and they can’t be in a relationship. Since I genuinely can’t think of people who get too upset over that here about that stuff. There’s probably some examples but way less when you compare it to places like Japan. As for Idol worship already being a thing in the West? True, but I was also mainly referring to Japanese idol culture since it’s different in a few ways when you compare it to the West. Also I’m aware that there’s a lot of lonely men in the U.S, but we don’t have a crisis with our age demographic and declining birth rate like in Japan.

If you want proof, go watch an old video of Charlie where he discussed a girl who gets suddenly popular from a video and their fans later learn about her boyfriend.
Also fans who are too excited for their celebrity are present everywhere. Beatles, Micheal Jackson, BTS fan army. It is everywhere. It is human nature not Japan's exclusive quirk.

If it's a significant fraction of the population, then at what level would it not be considered pathetic and just considered the state of the world? What if you are actually the minority? That might be the scary thought to consider?
If you own many thousands to a bank, it's your problem. If you own the bank a billion dollar, the banks has a problem.
So if there is a few pathetic boys and girls with a loose grip on reality and idol obsession then it's their problem.
If it's a big chunk of the population then... it's society's problem and we would have to ask the hard questions on if we as a society has dropped the ball in raising our next generation.
Considering the obsession in extracting the economic value out of their citizen to the point that death from overwork has it's own Japanese word...

A lot of the times it is literally put into their contracts that they are not allowed to be in a romantic relationship with anyone while under contract. I used to be into Japanese idols a long time ago and once you see the dirt thats under the rig of bit only that industry but all entertaining industries in japan (and most asian cultures) its hard to see it the same.also didnt help that the idols i was fans of all graduated lol
Edit: and rifht after i post this the video talks about it lol. And no, at least when i was into idols it wasnt illegal. Maybe after i stopped watching (2010 ish) things changed but like he said its at least pressured onto these people not to date.

In latest years the problem grows exponentially, due to many reasons, most of which I am unqualified to analyze, but even an layman like me can see more and more people going too deep in the parasocial relationships with streamers, idols, etc. Of course I can scream "I blame the Internet" like some dumbass Neanderthal that got into politics, but the internet, while a factor is one of many existing factors in this growing trend and it is easiest to blame to boot, as pushing for reform for better mental heath care is hard, expensive and it wants some effort.

Treat these people like actual people and acknowledge that they know what they're doing. She knows her audience and what she is hired for. The company knows what she is there for and Jp men also know why she is hired, and that's why they get upset, because she's no longer fulfilling her side of the "social contract" that she's made with the fans. I'm not saying it's right, like yes she should be allowed to have a bf, but when you cater to simps as a career choice, it's not surprising when this happens and she 100% knew that.

Just like the argument Asmon was making at the end of the video. She knows what she's doing by pandering to that specific audience and by being a part of an "idol agency" disguised as a weather station lol. The lonely men are literally just giving the expected response, which is why they have that 'no dating rule" in their idol culture in the first place. It's not right, but you're fooling yourself if you don't think they don't know about these consequences before ever going into this industry. Also, love how anytime you criticize the online simp market or discuss women taking personal accountability when participating in said market, it's always "incel" or defending incels" as a response, almost like these groups are above criticism.

Their job is to milk simps and they can't take advantage of them as easily if they think she's taken.
