Love your work dude!
Been a sub for awhile and never really comented
Keep it up!
Awesome review John!
It's amazing your family name is actually Gamster81! It is lucky you ended up loving gaming! What a coincidence!
Nice! I recently got the next version of the Portable system, myself.
I just got the one with 105 games for Christmas and very happy with it
Great review, but I came away disappointed with the Flashback Console yet again. There is absolutely no point in having paddle games in the game collection, if they don't bundle them in the box. Paddle games with a joystick are universally awful. Also whoever the brains trust was who thought mounting the joystick ports upside down was a good idea? Why? That just makes no sense.
I really want to like these flashback consoles and I even own a couple, but they are always in some way half baked. Maybe version 9.
Dan
Good review! I got one of these systems for Christmas! Not a bad little system, specially with the HDMI output. Still wish they would put a cartridge port in the system!
I got the genesis hd and the Atari hd at the same time. I played the genesis first. The frame rate was horrible. It had slow down on the music and the picture. Then I tried the Atari and it didn't work. So I took them both back to Target. By the way they are 70 dollars at target for some reason .Maybe I'll give the Atari another chance. I'm glad you're back. Thanks for your great reviews.
Great video. Growing up I had the atari 2600 (1987 model) and I loved it. I would love for them to come out with the 1987 model 2600 flashback with Mrs pac man and classic donkey kong....and your right....$80 is a bit much for that console.
good to see they moved the ports to front
The Flashback Series are often judged way too harshly? I've never had any problems with them. What's not too like?
I have 8. It plays great and looks great. You cant go wrong for $40
If I'm not mistaken, Space Invaders on this console is not a port at all, but a custom version specifically for the Flashback (a result of the licensing agreement with Taito).
If $80 seems too steep for some, the 'standard' (not gold) version of the Flashback 8 can be had for around $50 (and I saw it as low as $40 over Christmas).
I would wait for the 2018 versions, as they might finally have an SD card interface.
Greg2600 I doubt that will ever happen
Haha John, I think you meant that playing Centipede with a ROLLER BALL controller it much better. You're not going to get very far using PADDLE controllers in that game. :P
can you buy a separate controller with a roller ball?
Paddle controller with centipede ? how will you move up and down?
Apparently Mystique used Kaboom for their inspiration on some games. :)
Wasnt ever big on Atari, but seems pretty neat................. Audio was really low though John, might wanna fix that for future uploads
I watch this channel just for Jon's strong, manly hands.
Hey, what is the battery life of these wireless controllers?
Does it have any of the licensed games like Parker Brothers' Star Wars series or M-Network's TRON games? ...or Raiders of the Lost Ark or E.T.? ...or the original Mario Bros game?
There is probbaly a pause button on the unit ittself?
This is better than the indie go go one.
Why does my controller stick only move up and down but not left and right
Nice review
SupaPixelGirl more salty Mario plz
Hey. When I hit the power button on mine, the light just flashes but never fully turns on. Am I missing something? HELP it was a fathers day present for my dad
Joust, ET, Missle Command, Combat, are those on there?,
9:06 whoa! lool
I am collecting mine tomorrow morning. Won it on Ebay - the delux version with the paddles. Not many girl gamers on here. The joysticks batteries sound like a nightmare. I think that I may have an old controller in my mum's loft.
Why did they put the HDMI on the side and the power on the upper part of the back?
Random question, can this be modded to have an atari 2600 cartridge slot
I for one, hate that they have so many SKUs for Atari Flashback 8. Especially how some have certain games but not others. But most because they didn't offer one SKU with the HD version of the console with wired controllers and wired paddles. You can only get the wired controllers on the SD versions (with or without the wired paddles) with way less games.
Can I buy their brand new paddles form this comompany and plug inot my normal real atari? That would ROCK!
I'm very happy with my CIB Atari Flashback 2. Original hardware, and the only one that can be modded to play carts.
M Network games had some of the best graphics.
I have a Atari flashback and I like it. It's fun and I do Money Videos because I make a lot of money 👍😄
I thought they said a new flashback could play carts?
aaaaa my mom was talking about atari and i neew what she was talking abount and i would be fun to play a game not so hard and have fun playing games on a diforent controler
The games on the 2600 does not interest me at all but I do enjoy watching videos about it
10:03 A good indication of how terrible those AtGames wireless sticks control!
Anything by AtGames is usually lackluster just like their many Sega Genesis disasters.
How do you play the Swordquest series without the comics?
Steelebourne with the World Wide Web~~~~~~~~~~
You can download the manuals and comics from ReplacementDocs - replacementdocs.com/download.php They're all in PDF format. They do not have every manual for every game. For Swordquest, they do have them - manuals and comics.
Steelebourne if you have a special uncle like me he has them but you have to do things to get them
JohnConnor333 best comment ever
Are their nintendo games on it like mario bros & donkeykong? Or is nintendo’s policy sooo strong that even those atari 2600 versions of those games are not on it.
No they ain't
Decathlon was the best Atari game!
Damn good point, many say about Nintendo, seldom heard about their immediate predecessor Atari, *no* video games absolutely would not have evolved the way they did without Atari clearing a path, fun fact Nintendo was going to make games for Atari, but wound up making their own, if you fast forward, almost the same thing Nintendo did to Sony PlayStation, funny how history repeated like that
why give you kaboom when you need a paddle that was with the original system
I love how he calls these games ports while the machine is actually emulating 2600/5200 roms
Just played with this .. pretty nice.. Ironically Pitfall looks kinda choppy/crappy... why advertise it on the box of it's junky. Most of other games seemed fine.. tho Asteroids was choppy too
Check your sound level at 9 min in...almost blew my speakers!! smh
You can't play Kaboom! with a joystick. Just don't.
I am disappointed that there are no Atari porn games on it
Get the new Sega Genesis flash back
That's not an ATARI port of space invaders. The 5200 version looks like butt, this is not that one either. No version on any old Atari looked like that.
Too bad they don't add movie based games like Raiders of the Lost Ark,Superman or any of the Star Wars and also too bad no Pac Man and they can't get the rights from Nintendo to get Donkey Kongor original Mario Bros. oh yeah and Popeye
Nice job with the review, but I'm not a fan of AtGames.
$80 for junk emulation is not ideal.
My advice would be to seek out an original Atari Flashback 2 system. That was before AtGames got their hands on it, and subsequently, ruined it.
AF2 used a perfect replication of the TIA chip used in the actual Atari 2600 hardware, and therefore the games look and run perfectly.
You can even add-on a cartridge slot and play actual carts on it!
There is always RetroPie and other options, but better still is an actual original Atari 2600 or 7800.
That said, I like the AtGames efforts and have several of them. It provides convenient and reasonably priced access to classic gaming. It is quickly playable right out of the box; You don't have to assemble and configure anything, download a bunch of games, or track down aging cartridges .
Of course the original Atari VCS or 7800 system is a given, but I figured anyone considering one of these, is already aware of that.
I personally love the Atari 7800 with my Longhorn Engineer Svideo/composite mod and Atari CX78 NES style controllers. It's a huge step up from RF, and plays the full library of 2600 & 7800 games.
The main problem I have seen with the Flashback 8, aside from inaccurate emulation, latency, etc.. Is that the wireless controllers are horrible, and in many cases, barely function. Just read the many reviews floating around.
Sure you can just download an emulator, use A raspberry Pi, or even buy the pretty decent Atari Flashback PS4, and Xbox One (IIRC) collections. Which for some odd reason they've decided to split up on to 2 volumes... Apparently 25-50GB just wasn't enough to hold Atari 100 2600 roms, but the problem with that being, some of the best games (Warlords, Kaboom!, Pong, Circus, etc..) Are nearly unplayable without the Atari paddles. Had they properly implemented the touchpad on the PS4's DualShock 4, it might have worked better.
Flashback 2 isn't compatible with 100% of 2600 games (there's a compatibility list on AtariAge). An improved VCS-on-a-chip was planned but never released due to AtGames taking over the Flashback line. The emulation on later Flashbacks is ok, though nothing beats a real 2600.
There are so differences between revisions of the FB2 as well.
I've seen the list on AA, and know that some which were marked as glitched, or not working do in fact work for me. So I imagine that also plays a part into it. For example, Quadrun on my Revision A has the voice samples working, but on later versions it does not.
I'd say that Rev A is about 99% compatible with original releases, Supercharger aside, and about 75℅ compatible with homebrew, all dependent on the back switching.
I agree with original hardware being superior. I am very happy with my Svideo modded 7800.
I don't want no stinking HMDI port on my Atari! Unless it has composite too!
How about an Atari with atari prices from
The 70s.
Even then it's a rip off.
Atari sucks
you dont have a show, homie. you just make videos on youtube
Worst purchases of 2017
To be honest i never liked this console atari 2600.Ok, its history and so on but still...
