Ha! This was a fun watch. I love that you managed to make a video about our series that is literally longer than every episode played back to back. Anyway, I *was* Captain S; AMA. Also if you want to see the “old” adventures of Captain S I could certainly make it happen. But it’s lost to time for good reason.
Also there was another failed attempt at a second season in 2013. Devon and I teamed up on our own and envisioned a less campy, slightly more adult second season and even raised a little money and shot a pilot, but unfortunately never finished editing it. Captain S is just unfortunately the kind of show that would either require significant financial backing from someone or a group of people who don’t need to worry about money while they’re making the show.
Anyway, I’d be happy to talk to you more about the show if you had any questions. I could also easily rip/burn the DVDs for you if you wanted so you could get all that SWEET SWEET EXTRA CONTENT!
Also, let it be known that the Nerd jokes you liked in the Christmas special when he’s stuck in Home Alone were all written by yours truly. SUCK IT, JAMES! (Miss you buddy!)

Say what you will about the quality of Captain S as a show, these folks were wildly ahead of their time and were far beyond what most were capable of. It's easy to poke fun of now, but this was 2006, way before a lot of the modern conveniences we have now, which I think makes the fact that they made a pretty accurate re-creation of your typical 90's sitcom very impressive. Yeah it ain't a great show, I can't see myself actually sitting down and watching it unless I'm drunk, but it's definitely cool for what it is and it's a shame that it never got a chance to expand beyond it's initial first season. While I don't think it would have ever been on the level of AVGN or Nostalgia Critic, I do think it could've had the potential to have generated a decent following of dedicated fans. Anyways, great job deep diving this show, I love learning about old internet stuff like this.

Captain S feels like a time capsule of content creation in the 2000s: pure passion, cheesy humor, low quality, but ambitious regardless of the limitations of content creation back then.
I have nothing but respect for PBC productions, end of the day they just wanted to produce an entertaining show that differentiated itself from gaming content back then.

Okay, so I held off of watching this video because I have a very personal connection with the this series. But I'm honestly glad that I finally did.
My brother is best friends with the actors who played Nes and Lunk, Devon and Shael Riley. And I can distinctly remember how happy and excited they were during the shows run. I was 15, but I can still remember how big of a deal it was for them.
By brother was even working on a special Captain S fan video using the PC game The Movies, and got the character models to look like all the cast members. But it was never really finished.
Seeing all this again after all these years really brought up a special sense of nostalgia for me. I nearly cried every time the music was played.
Captain S is a very special part of my childhood, mainly because of how close I was to the two people involved. I looked up to them and it was amazing seeing them in an internet show next to AVGN.
Thank you for reminding me of good times.

Captain S is like that really obscure, yet entirely delightful indie movie that you try to share around in the hopes that maybe it’ll get a little more attention, but sadly it never does. I found about it through Derek Alexander (formerly known as the Happy Video Game Nerd, now Stop Skeletons From Fighting) mostly because he would always have a Captain S poster in the background of his videos, so I decided to check it out, and thought it was awesome. But by then, the series was already dead and everyone had moved on. Such a shame.

1:28:40 That's the Sega Menacer, it was Sega's answer to the Super Scope (and evidently far less iconic!). So its basically just throwing in another, somewhat hyped but ultimately flopped Sega accessory to the mix. I guess you could call it a deeper cut for the Sega fans, though none of that's going to really address the plot contrivances of its sudden reveal. =p
They could have made a whole thing about it being a fabled replacement for the old Master System Light Phaser.

I enjoyed this episode. As for the retrospective on TGWTG/Channel Awesome, well, there's gonna be quite a lot to digest. I do wonder if it will mention Asalieri? From what I remember, he was the one who initially reported on the dark side of Channel Awesome. The organization could have been exposed long ago in 2011, but Linkara and Obscurus Lupa dismissed everything Asa said. Fast forward to 2018, and the very same things they dismissed from Asa, they wrote about in that document.

I entered Asalieri's "Whenever the Hell Reviewer Contest" back in 2011, and I won by one point. The most flattering thing was that Asa shot a video of him and the judges laughing at and enjoying my video, and that's a helluva compliment considering I could have easily been an RAR subject.

Having first heard of this series from your AVGN video, it is nice to see you cover it in full, as it is something I had never heard of it before. It's really nice to see someone covering these old internet series/personalities as they really are interesting stories and you tell them very well, being engaging throughout.
While this may not be fair, as I have only seen this series through this video (wish I could have been there for the discord group watch), my thoughts more or less mirror yours based on what I've seen with the series having interesting ideas, impressive effects, fantastic music, and some entertaining performances from the villains, but it sadly ends up also being pretty boring.
I mentioned in your Spax video that I found the highlights of that video being the clips of Spax doing something outlandish. Here it is the opposite where for the most part my brain was tuning out the clips of the show.
Knowing when this series came out seems to be very important in judging its quality as it does more or less feel like a trip down memory lane while also being impressive for the time. Maybe had they continued, the series could have found its footing, but seeing the ideas for season 2, it may have just been a big mess. As it is, I'm not surprised nobody talks about the series.
@1:44:30 Seeing the chemistry with AVGN and Captain S, I think it shows how much a good foil can really make a senario entertaining. Honestly, I'd argue not having a character with the sort of energy that AVGN has really harms the series overall now that I think about it.
Kind of a shame to see how the series ended. The fact that people were interested shows that the series may have become something bigger than it became. Time truly is malicious.
Best of luck with the Nostalgia Critic videos. Not surprised to hear that they will be separate parts because, oh lord, there's a lot to cover. Best of luck with all your other projects as well.

I never realized what a big influence the series Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad was on Captain S. It's a sort of Power Rangers-style adaptation of a different Japanese show called Gridman the Hyper Agent. The Game Genie's inflection and the use of the term "meat thing" are 100% based on that. Even Nes's appearance is based on the antagonist there. Weird.

Brett said in the interview that a new season would need a huge budget to create Video Land, and that he still envisions Captain S as a high school kid. The obvious solution would be an animated sequel, which would be cheaper to produce than live action VFX, plus the original actors could return to voice their characters. That they were the only kid friendly show in that bracket that I know of and that gave them an extra charm in a way. Yes, there were pacing problems in the Captain S episodes, but I'm sure those could have been ironed out in later seasons. Also I never understood how the AVGN xmas crossover didn't give them more exposure. I was sad when they folded but I guess a lot of them went on to other interesting jobs, like pursuing puppetry. It could take place after SNES came out. Some of us remember being told we can't afford Super Nintendo by our parents, along with some sarcastic inquiry about what makes it so super compared to the regular Nintendo we already have at home.

Great vid. I remember seeing this dude in the nerd critic showdown. He seemed out of place at the time. Also, despite the almost zero budget they had a great person behind the camera. It’s framed and held pretty well for a time when stabilizers and gimbals were out of amateur price range or even invented.

The series looks pretty cool, love the creative flair and ambition. I remember running into it in the old ScrewAttack days, but never gave it a chance. Love the Super Human Samurai vibe, wonder if it was an inspiration. It's a shame that narrative-based content never became popular in the content creation space, 2006-2010 has so many weird, quirky and honestly awesome attempts at webseries, it's truly fascinating. Makes you wonder what the landscape of it would look like today when everyone has access to professional tools and equipment.

Absolutely loved this video. While it was never overly popular I'd like to think it being the screwattack/youtube "sega" internet show in a time where we had a dedicated oldschool nintendo show through the Angry Nintendo Nerd may have put more eyes on it that otherwise wouldnt be there.
The "Game Genie" laugh is just a more dorky version of the Kilokahn laugh from Super Human Samurai Syber-Squad, which makes sense since Nes and Game Genie were basically copies of Malcom Fink and Kilokahn
All i remember about little miss gamer is that she was somewhere on one of the backpages of TGWTG that you needed to go through like 10 options to get to, and that she e begged for a 3ds(?) i think before disappearing forever.
Out of curiosity though, did you try reaching out to Brett and Chad for any possible further info?

Great job in this video Dylan! I was around during the Screw Attack days and even then Captain S was very obscure.

this was a very charming little series. the joke of it being all PG and 90s style is cheesy and endearing, and it seems like like had a blast making it. also the Asian girl is cute.

I never watched too much of this show, but there is a certain nostalgia factor to seeing it since I remember catching the AVGN tie in episode back in the day on Screwattack, so it is nice to have a sort of feeling of closure to seeing what exactly this show was in full.
On that note, while I'm certain these are *far* more remembered than Captain S was (even if I never see people ever talk about them), it would be cool to see a deepdive on some other forgotten internet series, like Doomsday Arcade, There will be Brawl, and Pure Pwnage. Especially that last one, since that one is a bit similar to Captain S in its super limited, early internet production quality, it being sort of a time capsule (the protagonist goes around calling people "ghey", not exactly something you'd see modern online creators do), and also having a crazy production history, like the show stopping partway through the second season due to one of the actors flat out dying during production, and the show awkwardly being rebooted years later as a TV show (I'd checked out before this point, no idea what became of that, though glancing around online apparently it was reviled by fans). Also funny is the show being an origin point for the ancient "boom headshot" meme, even though I'm sure 99% of people who used that never even knew what it was from.

old, forgotten internet shows make me a bit sad. They were a huge part of 2000s early internet culture, but have since been lost to time. Pure Pwnage was my favorite, and a lot of the fans hoped it'd be something bigger with the TV show, and then the crowd-funded movie, but the magic of the original online series was never re-captured. The only thing left of it culturally are the occasional "Boom Headshot" references, but those are fading, too. I'd love to see an episode about it.

Glad I finally got around to checking this one out, it was a great video! A couple of years ago I had the melody to the Captain S theme stuck in my head and when I finally remembered where it was from I re-watched the series and went down a bit of a Captain S rabbit hole... it's a fascinating look at what internet content was like back circa 2007. Also it's a show that occupies this weird space where everyone who was around back then seems to mostly have forgotten it, but still have vague memories of it...
Wanted to ask if you had any luck with finding a copy of the dvd? I imagine that will be a bit tough (who knows how many were even printed 500? 1000? Less? More?). I'm guessing the best bet to find one would be by getting in contact with someone who was involved with PBC Productions or Screwattack around that time, they might have an extra copy. If you do let me know, haha, I want to see that pilot too... anyway great video Dylan looking forward to the future of the channel.

Since I'm not a native english speaker, I came to know the AVGN through subtitled reuploads first, and then the real deal. Needless to say, I was oblivious to the more obscure/niche personalities that shared the relative internet spotlight with James, like Captain S. Not the critic, however; I think I saw the critic before I ever knew AVGN. I would like to see your promised NC/ThatGuyWithTheGlasses/Channel Awesome point of view. But, well, the fall of channel awesome's reputation is more mainstream at this point.
