@@RolandG-y3w Not really, there is a big difference between 105 and Ultegra such as smooth shifting and quick precise shifting each time. The reference which you stated about Shimano is the difference between Ulteegra and Shimano's high line Dura ace. Dura ace is made with carbon. Thus, making the equipment much lighter whereas, Ultegra is made with alloy. Get your facts straight.
That's one of the reasons why I changed my 10-speed 105 5700 deraileur to... 9-speed Alivio M4000 (Shadow) which has almost the same weight but provides better chain tension and is compatible with 36t or 40t cassettes.
So on this video I’d say the 105 system might have had one link too much on the chain, but I’d need to see it in the big ring and big cog. The reason the chain was possibly so loose and floppy when in the small ring and smallest cog. On the R8000, it looked nice but one observation, be sure to use the supplied derailleur cable, but if not, at least use the aluminum sealed ferrule on the end going into the adjuster. It adjuster will hold it much more rigidly and force the cable housing to stay perpendicular due to the new system using smaller housing lengths when exiting at the rear drop out on bikes with internal cable routing. It will be mentioned in the instructions with a new retail derailleur, and the cable and aluminum housing will be provided.
Hey man, I really didn't see a significant difference between them while I watched this video. In some point of view the 105 looked faster than Ultegra moving from big cog to little one... It seems that the real difference can be in the weight!
105 vs ultegra is noticable in many areas, quality of materials, ie bearings & pivot joints for increased longitivity etc, etc in Ultegra. Quality of design for better shifting & feel, lighter so more reaction plus assists with overall weight, for ultegra. Design difference is very noticable for more chain wrap, better control of chain slack & generally better for shifting from the underslung design on ultegra.
My old bike needs a group set but i was thinking about getting the Shimano 105 and ended up getting the latest 8 speed claris :) It does work great. But I wish I would have waited and now the 105 R7000 in coming.
Although not required. I would suggest using an aluminum cable ferrule on the housing going into the 105 derailleur. An aluminum ferrule has the same diameter along its whole length and when sitting in the adjuster, will be held better and not let the housing flex off to the side like seen in your video. You can see in the video that the cable housing is not being held rigidly and perpendicular to the adjuster, which also to my eye is sticking out from the adjuster housing (indicating too much slack in the cable when you first attached it to the derailleur).
node that that there might not be an actual difference (on function as you mention, not weight and looks) anymore when 105 gets an update too. Old ultegra probably functioned same way as current 105.
this is going beyond my original comment stating that there was no VIDEO that I have seen yet that shows a difference between 105 and Ultegra other than in weight and materials. Nevertheless, even between 5800 and 6800 there was a difference in the strength of the springs in the RD. From lower end Claris, each level up has a stronger spring when comparing like generations.
say danny, what's your opinion on dartmoor frames? Especially the hornet has seriously peaked my interest. I'd love to build up a proper hardtail bike for trails. The prices on those are extremely tempting i must say. The front would be an rst rogue (or rs pike) with a shimano Zee 1x10 groupset. And of course ye olde 26 wheels.
The lack of chain bounce is only due stiffer springs. I think Shimano cannot release the next 105 as it will steal nearly all sales away from the R8000. And, have you compared the price of the R8050 and the Chorus EPS! I think the whole Ultegra range will die after 3 years if it does not loose a lot of weight - the obvious way forward is carbon crank arms and (maybe) carbon rear derailleur body.
BMH1965 you could make the same argument between the new dura ace and ultegra groupsets. Ultegra is much better value but there's always going to be peeople who value better groupsets.
BMH1965 105 R7000 is available on pre order for June 2018. It's just slightly heavier than the Ultegra R8000. But yeah, it will out sell Ultegra for unit sales.
Well within two months this video is outdated. New 105 groupset announced, released in june 2018 and also new ultegra rx with a clutch derailleur spotted at flanders.
I don't understand how 3 or 4 hundreds grams influence that much while the weight of the bike only represent around 10% of the total weight, and so 400 grams only 0.5%. Could someone please give me an explanation?
the best reason for upgrading ur items are bearings. friction loss is so influential for over 30km/h riding. Maneuverability is the second reason I consider in instance, thickness of Sti lever is depending on it's Material and sophistication. that's very stressful during long riding. lightness is the last for me.
I don't think this is a fair comparison. I would wait until the new 105 comes out in a year or two to compare. The Ultegra is a brand new design, while the 105 is the old design. Comparing the 6800 Ultegra to 5800 105 would be a fair comparison.
Dan Lipp, you're right, but this is the fastest they've introduced a new 105 after introducing a new Ultegra. When I wrote that, I hadn't heard any news on when it was coming.
I had a 27 inch red and black mongoose bike While riding it a 4 in the morning some racist prick ran me off the street and I hit a raised side walk " who designed that " and that killed my derailleur as well as drive cain

Let's talk about these components: goo.gl/aLujxw
SickBiker Danny, did you add an extension on the dropout, or does the Ultegra derailleur come that way?
This is how Shimano Shadow derailleurs normally look like.
you think 105 shifters will work with my r8000 rear d? thank you your vids are awesome
11 speed 5800 shifters will work with ultegra r8000.
michwoz woohooo I’m riding this spring woohooo
I have no idea what I'm looking at. They both look the same to me.
Michael Fitzpatrick that's true
Michael Fitzpatrick because even Shimano says the mechanics are exactly the same. The one difference is the weight due to materials used.....
@Roland Goudriaan
LOL, these two derailleurs use a completely different design. If you were to compare R7000 vs R8000, that would be another story.

Have u done comparison R8000 to R7000?
The answer is...?
105 is 2/3 the price of ultegra r8000, so on my next bike im def going with 105 there is almost no difference in the shifting.
Compare like for like please. So 105 r7000 to ultegra r8000
Don't think the use of different tires made any difference?
Something is wrong: the 105 has an extra link. Like goatlink. The Ultegra not. Fail!!!
Ultegra is smoother but there no match for the all time favorite the Shimano tourney 😂😂😂😂
The video would have made more sense, if you showed the same shifts one after the other.
Don't you think the cx bike would also be smoother overall
Which is why Shimano upgraded their current road durailleur to the shadow design. More stability under riding load.
My old bike needs a group set but i was thinking about getting the Shimano 105 and ended up getting the latest 8 speed claris :) It does work great. But I wish I would have waited and now the 105 R7000 in coming.

I can't see much difference at all
whats the conclusion?
It might be fun to see how MicroShift does against Shimano.
That would be interesting indeed, considering the market is dominated by Simano, Sram and Campagnolo.
this might just be the first video showing an actual difference between Ultegra and 105 that does not have to do with materials and weight.
node taken into account this new ultegra vs old 105. Same difference would be there with old vs new ultegra.
i don't understand the significance of new vs old Ultegra regarding my original comment.

*sigh* I am not disagreeing with you. Just putting it in perspective.
Is it just me or the cable in the Ultegra looks like it is going to interfere with the spokes of the wheel or something?
It sure looks like one better pay extra attention to extra length.

Slowing down the footage is NOT slow motion, get yourself a camera that records 480 fps
Luke Sky it is though
goodyoutuber 69 it is not though
that is exactly what slow motion is. slowing down the footage
Recording at 120fps then playback at 30fps is 1/4 speed
Make the review again when 105 R7000 is available in the market.
In addition, put in Ultegra R8000 RX into comparison for next video. R7000 vs R8000 & R8000 RX.
Thanks for this video. Does the long cage make a difference vs. the short cage ?
Well within two months this video is outdated. New 105 groupset announced, released in june 2018 and also new ultegra rx with a clutch derailleur spotted at flanders.
This is almost the same videos a decade ago when Shimano introduced Deore XT with shadow derailleurs.
Adriel Tampubolon ㅅ
Both did pretty good
Visually, you can clearly see the difference. Ultegra has faster and more precise shifts. The 105 grinds through the gears as you shift the lever.
Remove the plastic disc for heavens sake
RD 5800 may be a less expensive alternative but is certainly not as defined as and shifts not as smooth as even RD 6600, speaking from experience.
I don't understand how 3 or 4 hundreds grams influence that much while the weight of the bike only represent around 10% of the total weight, and so 400 grams only 0.5%. Could someone please give me an explanation?

Where is the real problem. Is it the hand shifter on the handle bar, or the derailleur below or the 11 cog is not equally subdivided with the chain?
Ultegra is literally an alivio derailleur
Ethan Romasanta really? How?

This video was incredibly useful! Thank you! Now I know exactly which one to purchase! Perfect video! Thanks again!
Which one is that?
Everyone's an expert lol
there are a big different , its the ultegra is taller than 105 . S and G
they are dofferent generation in a 1st place... ultegra is a new model with shadow rd ysystem (chain stabilizer)
What is better pleas? 105 or Ultegra 8000
Ultegra
still got dork plates om mech
Might be my impression but the R8000 chain was more "Jumpy" when comparing to the 105
105 works great on road, who cares about chain wobbling?
Why are you comparing not only different groupsets but different generations?? Completely pointless.
my shimano STX derailleur from 1999 shifts at same quality.....to be fair..... on a 7 speed cassette xD
Shimano 105 is better and fastee

5800 was a piece of shit... shifting was pain in the ass! My sram force amd ultegra 6800 are way better.
Shut your filthy mouth.
i think that you dont know how to ride a bike LOL hahahahah my 5800 RD shifts perfectly
Are you sure? I have a 5800 it's much better than 5700. Can't find any fault really other than it's not as light as Ultegra.
