I've been playing this for some time, and it's seriously great. But to enhance it a little, I added 3 little custom rules in regard of the bear, and those are the following: 1. Bears can only take fish and fish queens. It's a bear, so it should be able to eat the fish, and the fish queens, they cannot take the other way around though, so they spend most of their time avoiding the bear. That makes for a scenario where both players want to progress with the players keeping the bear as far away as possible from their fish, thus making more use of the gained movement freedom the fish has. 2. A bear can only be taken by either an elephant or a queen. This one is just to make players try to redirect their elephants in a way they can get rid of the bear, again, making more space with the now meaningless pawn-walls, as for queens, they are powerful, but now a condition to lose, so one will protect them more, if you truly want to have freedom on the board, maybe a queen should step in. That will open a lot of new possibilities. 3. Each player takes a turn in moving the bear, with the black player starting. Since white starts moving, black gets the first bear move, to clarify, black will choose 1 of the center squares to lay the bear on, these being: d4, d5, e4 and e5, after choosing the bear's starting square, black will still be able to move a fish. From there on out, moving the bear will cost a turn though. Therefore from there on out players each will try to get the bear on each opposites throat, ruining their structures, open for weaknesses. Getting rid of him when he becomes a nuisance will become a major objective. I hope this will help to make a greater experience, if you try that is ^^.

Okay so I tested this out with people and it was actually incredibly interesting. I think it has a lot of potential. Here’s my feedback. 1. The rook and monkey are awesome. They add a lot of interesting complexity and were very fun to play with. They are pretty much perfect as is. Kings and queens also function pretty well and don't really need any adjusting. 2. The elephant is extremely weak. They're worse than fish, but unlike fish can't even promote. Each elephant can literally only access 8 squares of the board, with most of those squares often getting blocked off anyways. So, I'd recommend doing something to improve their options. A suggestion I have is to allow them to move horizontally/vertically 1 space, on top of diagonally 2 spaces. It would greatly increase their options, and I think would overall improve the game. Of course, you could do something else too. I just think it needs to have more maneuverability in general. 3. It takes too long to develop the fish. Allow them to move 2 spaces in the beginning like pawns can in Chess 1. 4. Just like pawns in Chess 1, I think fish should be also able to promote into any piece, not just queens. Especially with how useful rooks and monkeys can be. 5. There's very rarely a reason to move the bear, so it mostly does nothing. And then if it does manage to get into play there's also the risk of a situation where both players are just moving the bear back and forth endlessly. I know loops like that aren't new to chess, but I still thought it was especially bad with the bear. The people I played with suggested some changes, such as maybe the bear moves 1 space the first time it's moved, 2 spaces the second time it's moved, 3 spaces the third time, etc. Or maybe allow it move anywhere like the rook does, but just not the same place multiple times. Overall, very solid game. I enjoyed it a lot, and with some tweaks it could be pretty darn awesome.
Fun fact, your suggestion for the elephant in point 2) is almost EXACTLY how a _phoenix_ moves in many large variants of Japanese chess! _(Chū shōgi, dai shōgi_ and _maka dai dai shōgi_ all have a piece like this)
Elephant should trample enemy pieces on the square it skipped over, so it could potentially take 2 pieces at once. But it can't trample other elephants, instead it will stop on the first diagonal if an enemy elephant was there
@@EldronGah I’m joking about how this channel made a video about fixing the alphabet and in that video he called it the “correct alphabet” and that “everyone should use it” (Autocorrect keeps stopping me from doing that though lol)
Hey! I got an interesting rule: Imagine that the king gets jailed and the monkey rescue him. If the monkey with the banana dies, the king can recollect the banana and then the other monkey of his team can save him if he get captured, but if the other monkey dies and he get captured again, then he gets jailed forever.
And another thing: Everywhere the bear moves for the first time he can get killed by the elephants. You should make it the same as boring and lame chess with the bishop thing
I know you made this as a joke, but this actually does seem like a fun variant of chess EDIT: I forgot to mention this, but I think it need bird from Egypt
Quick critique. There needs to be a better win condition than just letting the queen live. Shes impossible to capture in most endgames. Suggest monkeys being gone or the king being captured while no bannana
That was also my first reaction. Games will literally never end, because no unit can ever touch the Queen unless it gets blundered. Capturing a Queen without saccing your own is hard enough in regular chess, and with all the other units being heavily nerfed, it certainly won't get easier.
I think the rule as stated in the video does have some merit. In Chess 1, it is not uncommon to sacrifice the Queen to gain a positional advantage or help Pawns towards promotion. However, because Fishy Queens are not real Queens, this tactic now comes with a greater risk.
Really cool idea I’ve actually played a few games and it’s pretty fun. One thing I’d change is the elephant. Right now it’s even worse than a pawn it’s forced to one spot but can’t even hop like a knight. Instead you could make it that it stampedes through the two spaces killing both pieces in the way.
@@milofrens3730 If you have a chess board do this test. Place a pawn anywhere on the board. Then from that position put a pawn on any diagonal that is 2 squares from that first pawn. Do the same for the newly placed pawns until you can do no more and then tell me how many pawns there are on the board.
The sorcerer can go to any position in the board independent of it's currently position. The way it captures is through skipping 1 circular row, and the next ring after it is where the sorcerer captures, it does not move to the location of the piece when it captures. Bird.
fun fact the rook is actually called “the castle” in turkish also bishop is called “the elephant” in turkish too and the queen is called “king’s advisor”
In German it's tower, too. The bishop is a "runner", the knight is a "jumper" and the queen is a "lady" - which is also the name of the "checkers" game. If we had the bear, it would probably be called the "Hasselhoff".
Because that makes more sense, bishops doesnt fights in battles or in front lines and queens are not known for their war and figthing capabilities. European version of the chest is dumb
As person who plays regular chess the rules seem a bit complicated and hard to remember with some cleaning up this could be fun but not at the state it is now
Fun fact about the monkey: there's a chess variant called Congo which has a piece also called monkey with the exact same movement, except it captures the pieces it jumps over (so they can only be of the opposite color) instead of the last one
What a smart dude so cool man keep the great video’s coming at us, bro you’ve done great and you will keep doing great! Never think that your not inportent because your important to me 😃
The "Get Out of Jail Banana" is one of my favorites. I love it. I don't even care if this game actually can be played through without major problems; I still want to play it.
By the way, the pawn doesn't necessarily have to turn into a queen, it can also turn into a bishop, knight, or rook. but you'd only usually want to switch into a queen or knight.
@@mrraggadish Bishops are worth 3 points and queens are worth 9. Also there are endgames where promoting to queen will end in a stalemate, but promoting to bishop won't.
i think the fish should also be able to switch into either some kind of nerfed monkey in case both monkeys get wiped out early game or maybe it could switch into a banana thing that could replenish the king's banana once used up
Chaturanga has a bunch of random rules, but my favorite has to be the Boat Triumph from its 4-player variant, Chaturaji. The Boat in Chaturaji moves like the Chess 2 elephant, but if any player moves a Boat to form a 2x2 square of boats, a Boat Triumph occurs, and the boat instantly captures all other boats in the square.
nobody is talking about how OP the rook is in chess 2 (everyone is talking about monkey). Think about how chess is played. You place pieces to cover other pieces that are covering other peices that if moved will discover other pieces that can be taken out. The fact rook can only attack after a piece is taken means nothing, as you would use a piece that can just apear everywhere on the board defensively by nature anyway. Take this super simple example- the enemy moves to a spot that will take your monkey, you only have once turn to save it. Just take your rook from all the way on the other side of the board and fly it to defend that monkey. The rook ALWAYS guarantees a defense. Side note- rook goes from the best end game piece (as you can easily box the king for a safe checkmate) to the worst piece, as it literally can't attack with a solo king on the board. In the event the king does take a piece, it can ONLY do so in a place the rook can't kill it, as you can't place yourself in check.
@@prerakgames4668 You can capture two pieces in a single turn? On the turn where they are both protected from everything but monkeys? Huh? I was talking about the very end of the comment which said you can't place yourself in check. Since there is no check, that's not an actual restriction. The entire side note is a bit confusing to me though so I might just misunderstanding.
"The monkey saves the King because he has a banana" "If the King has no banana the monkey does not have any incentive to save him" "The monkey never saves the Queen because she does not have a banana" 🍌 nice.
It's hard to see through all the levels of irony. I can't tell if you know everything about chess's history or if you don't even know what a variant is, but either way, the video is very funny, very accessible, a bit educational, and actually has a lot of cool ideas. I've tried making my own variants in the past, and this sure gave me inspiration for new rules, thanks. Great work dude, keep it up
I can’t wait to see someone try to make this playable in Tabletop Simulator. As a 3D artist, I’ll even go as far as to start modeling the pieces themselves when I have time lol
Idea for the elephant: if there's an enemy in between where it's going and where it is, it dashes through the enemy, taking the piece but it still goes all the way to 2 pieces.
Some Suggestions for balancing the pieces after many hours playing this version of chess: -Buff the Elephant so it can see 2 squares in each direction. It's range is pitiful (currently it can see only eight squares on the entire chess board). -The Crow's purpose as a piece should be a planned revenge killer (but only if the crow is touching the piece that was taken). -Limit the monkey's range to 3 hops per move. There are 32 pieces and 64 squares on the board. That being said, if the monkey can continuously jump over every other square, the monkey has the most capabilities out of any chess piece I have ever seen. It desperately needs a nerf of some kind. - Fish should be able to take pieces that are in front of it. - Taking the Bear should also capture the piece taking it -- incentivizing making it an obstacle throughout the game that either player can move. One final suggestion, make a clause to insure once both the king and queen are captured, despite the monkey remaining on the board, the game ends in defeat.

The cannon is actually a relatively shit piece, it's value is around 1/2 a Rook, the only reason the cannon looks powerful in Xiangqi is because the other pieces in Xiangqi (except Rook/Chariot) are far weaker than the cannon
In chess the cannon would be better i think. Xiangqi has elephants and the palace assistants to mitigate cannons which chess does not have (though the King in chess has better movement so maybe that balances it out). I dont think the monkey plays at all like the cannon lol, calculating all the places the monkey can attack seems like a nightmare.
the only brilliant thing is that is the monkey can save the king only 1 time, doesn't matter what piece you change and add, chess will still be better.
Oh yeah, i never gonna forget a matchup in 5D chess. When i was losing i traveled back in time and kill the parents of mi rival, but in the same time he did the same, so whe draw for time :/
There's a slight flaw in the bear, in which no matter where it's first move goes, it can be captured by an elephant. But I really like the idea of it. It should be uncapturable. And maybe add another. More dead square make the game interesting.
Being honest, this chess is SOOOO much more interesting, will check it out! Also, I think that we could add a rule page on the download link so that we can play with people who haven't watched the video yet.
7:17 the fishy queen probably takes inspiration from 1 point queen, which, in many variants, since they count captured piece points, prevents players from farming promotion sacrifices
I love how some of these ideas already exist in different games (taking pieces via jumping kinda in chinese chess, capturing pieces, fishie's move and fishie queen in shogi and piece that can be used by both players in Sáhkku)
I mean, rooks are still a thing, so theoretically you could still castle as normal, but it wouldn't make thematic sense anymore. Instead of the king hiding behind his castle walls, he is hiding behind... A bird?
It doesnt make so much sense here, bcz u one of the reasons to castle in chess 1.0 is to connect rooks to control the entire back roll, from there you can prepare the rooks to atack (if needed) Since chess 2 crows cant capture like rooks, castling wouldn't make them controll the back roll, only the spaces adjacent to them
Ps: You could only castle to make a shield on the king, so unlike chess 1.0 you could make a rule where you can castle even if the king is in check, or maybe you could castle with the Queen once she's captured, you could make the crow fly to the jail and break free the queen swaping their position. But ONLY of the crow selected hasnt moved yet
I would love to watch someone play this. I find fairy chess layouts like this fascinating and seeing people figure out new strategies because of that is always interesting.
The soldier moves exactly 2 spaces in every direction. The way it captures is when moving, all pieces in your way are captured. Elephant. capturing everything at it's way.
Hello Mr. Jenkins. This is the government department of chess that JFK was too lazy to name. We are pleased to report that your new model of Chess is now being put into use for 100 new chess sets being created as we speak. We would furthermore like to request your permission to put these sets into use immediately and ban all other chess sets. We will be eagerly waiting for your response.
I think adding a banana on top of the kings head truly is extremely vital as there would be no incentive for the monkey knight to take part in the game, absolutely genius 𓅱
The problem with making an chess 2 playing engine is the bird's movement. It has a huge branching factor, and that messes up traditional mini-max searching algorithms, they get overwhelmed. So you might have to use a more modern kind of AI. Maybe an Upper Confidence Bound algorithm, or better yet a learning AI that uses UCT (Upper Confidence bound applied to Tree search) base algorithm
1: The queen is Uber-powered in this version because everything has become so much weaker. 2: Strengthen the Elephant by making it to where they can move 2 spaces in any direction, diagonal or orthagonal, and they capture all pieces along their path. 3: The Rook is weird, but you should really build on the idea of it feeding on dead pieces. Instead of the Rook being able to capture when a piece is captured, instead it can move to a square where a piece died and promote to that piece by "eating it's dead body." 4: With the pieces you have capturing the Queen will be really difficult. I advise making multiple winstates. First, if the King and Queen are captured. 2nd, if the King is captured twice (has no banana). 3rd, all non-royal pieces are captured.
6:17 it does not need to become a queen, it can become any piece the player wants to. However in chess 1.0M (M = Modern times) the best option is queen or knight and a queen is better than a knight in new chess tho you can turn a pawn into a BERD (oh yea and this nerf on bishops is sadge)

_(Chū shōgi, dai shōgi_ and _maka dai dai shōgi_ all have a piece like this)
I agree entirely with you! Hope he makes some changes in an balance update - chess 2.1 perhaps
Elephant should trample enemy pieces on the square it skipped over, so it could potentially take 2 pieces at once. But it can't trample other elephants, instead it will stop on the first diagonal if an enemy elephant was there

Hey! I got an interesting rule:
Imagine that the king gets jailed and the monkey rescue him. If the monkey with the banana dies, the king can recollect the banana and then the other monkey of his team can save him if he get captured, but if the other monkey dies and he get captured again, then he gets jailed forever.
And another thing:
Everywhere the bear moves for the first time he can get killed by the elephants. You should make it the same as boring and lame chess with the bishop thing

You can’t really checkmate a Queen. All you have to do is keep her safe the whole time and this game will never end.
It's possible ._.
u can, you have to do a king checkmate on the queen, then, make it so any moves are unsafe, and every piece is protected by another
or, you can make the whole board in danger. way harder and probably not possible though
Omg chill it’s just a joke
I would say have the queen move like the king if the king is in jail. Fishy queens still get to move like queens
@@doomse150 If the king is dead, she may still be able move any direction, but she'll have to stop in front of any pieces in front of her

Best comment
Realised the problem with the elephant also. It literally only has access to 8 squares.
@@anythingpeteives why 8, it can only move to 4 squares ( he said that he has to move 2 spaces)

The sorcerer can go to any position in the board independent of it's currently position.

Chaturanga has a bunch of random rules, but my favorite has to be the Boat Triumph from its 4-player variant, Chaturaji. The Boat in Chaturaji moves like the Chess 2 elephant, but if any player moves a Boat to form a 2x2 square of boats, a Boat Triumph occurs, and the boat instantly captures all other boats in the square.
need to work the phrase Boat Triumph into my every day speech more often
10:36 the bear always gets captured instantly bc each elephant has control over d4, d5, e4, and e5
nobody is talking about how OP the rook is in chess 2 (everyone is talking about monkey).
There's no check in this version.
also the rook can easily get a king
@@TheRedSmarty well you will be checkmated on turn 1

After a piece is killed the rook can capture the king or Queen

Idea for the elephant: if there's an enemy in between where it's going and where it is, it dashes through the enemy, taking the piece but it still goes all the way to 2 pieces.
Ye
Actually that seems like a nice improvement, considering the fact that Oats took away its special ability.
Some Suggestions for balancing the pieces after many hours playing this version of chess:
-Buff the Elephant so it can see 2 squares in each direction.
Ur bear idea is amazing😮
The Queen still can run forever

there should be a special move that's the equivalent of Castling in Chess 1.0
I mean, rooks are still a thing, so theoretically you could still castle as normal, but it wouldn't make thematic sense anymore. Instead of the king hiding behind his castle walls, he is hiding behind... A bird?
It doesnt make so much sense here, bcz u one of the reasons to castle in chess 1.0 is to connect rooks to control the entire back roll, from there you can prepare the rooks to atack (if needed)
Since chess 2 crows cant capture like rooks, castling wouldn't make them controll the back roll, only the spaces adjacent to them
Ps: You could only castle to make a shield on the king, so unlike chess 1.0 you could make a rule where you can castle even if the king is in check, or maybe you could castle with the Queen once she's captured, you could make the crow fly to the jail and break free the queen swaping their position. This single 11 minute video has taught me the fundamentals of chess, while trying to make them different.
Instead of the Rook being able to capture when a piece is captured, instead it can move to a square where a piece died and promote to that piece by "eating it's dead body."
4: With the pieces you have capturing the Queen will be really difficult. I advise making multiple winstates. First, if the King and Queen are captured. 2nd, if the King is captured twice (has no banana). 3rd, all non-royal pieces are captured.
As a chess player I unironically think this is an improvement
6:17 it does not need to become a queen, it can become any piece the player wants to. However in chess 1.0M (M = Modern times) the best option is queen or knight and a queen is better than a knight
