About Archie Bunker's Place: Archie and his partner, Murray buy the neighborhood bar and rechristen it “Archie's Place.” The Bunkers adopt their niece, Stephanie, but during the show's second season, Edith dies, leaving Archie to raise Stephanie, and, soon, another niece, with the help of a black housekeeper. Most of the action is set at the restaurant, with a cast of new characters including Anne Meara as the cook and Jason Wingreen as the bartender.

Archie Bunker's Place | Gloria Refuses To Say Why She Left Mike | The Norman Lear Effect
bit.ly/NormanL...
Ironically this episode vindicates Archies long term dislike for Mike Stivic.
No it just destroys Mike and Gloria's relationship for the sake of a show that lasted two months. Terrible.
Mike was all talk and no action.
I always disliked that meathead.
@@Ravenscroft82 You mean the show Gloria? That lasted a year.
@@Ravenscroft82 Couldn’t agree more. There was no need to have Mike run off to a commune with one of his students. All they had to say was that Mike and Gloria continued to drift apart (they were actually separated in that Christmas episode) and decided to go their separate ways. It wasn’t necessary to destroy the Mike character in order to make Gloria single for her own show.
Archie was right all along about Meathead😂
yes!
But didn't Gloria cheat on him? I forget
@@kungfumind. If she didn't she should have...he's a meathead
@@LeeHill66 😆
Meathead is a real life meathead. And today he's worse.
Rather than her own show, They should have had Gloria and Joey move in with Archie, possibly all move to a bigger house. That would have given Archie Bunker's Place the boost it needed and would have been far better than the show Gloria that only lasted a few episodes anyway.
But what about the Jo de Winter role?
@@Mister_Listener That show had so much potential, but it was lame.
Surprisingly Gloria actually lasted for a full 22 episodes. I feel they could have made your idea work though although maybe Gloria and Joey could've got an apartment nearby or something. Definitely would've helped the show.
@@justmeiniowa No, someone else was living there by then.
Gloria actually had good ratings, CBS just decided to cut bait on it for some unknown reason.
10 years later Mike had become everything Archie dislikes. Archie let him live in his home and eat for free for 4-5 years.
@Jon Stewart Actually, you can thank the producers / writers for that stupid maneuver. It was a dumb idea that wasn't in keeping with the character of Michael Stivic.
@@terrisorenson6791 What?!! This absolutely kept with the character of Mike.
Wanting to live in a commune was in character. Hooking up with one of his own students, especially one probably 20 years younger, doesn't sounds in character
@@mikeleone1347 that’s ABSOLUTELY in character. Liberals are phonies, everybody knows that!
@@mikeleone1347 Bad job on the writers. Mike would not abandon his family plus communes weren't a thing in the 80's.
The chemistry between the cast and characters of All in the Family was perfect. And so of course, when Edith “died,” the series died with her.
You see, I remember the episode where the family was playing this kind of "Honesty Game", and during the game Lionel Jefferson kind of called Mike out for being a phony who (perhaps subconsciously) only did good things because it made him look good. I also remember that Edith was the only player to come out unscathed in that Honesty Game.
Yes I remember Mike always wanted to talk to Lionel about the "black " issues and sometimes he said he is more than just a black man not his exact wording but his message. Like Lionel said Archie doesn't know any better and Mike is educated should know better 😉
The game was "cop out" and that was the funniest episode in the whole series.
@@tomterry2139 Thank you it was a great episode 👏
I remember that episode. Mike wanting to play this "honesty " game is a perfect example of be careful what you ask for. I think games like that are stupid because sooner or later someone will say something they shouldn't and a big argument will start. Honesty is not always the best policy. Monopoly or watching a movie would have been more sensible.
@@tomterry2139 The game was GROUP THERAPY, With It and Cop Out were the voting cards!
So he went to Kool-Aid land. That's my takeaway here.
I never forgave the writers for this. But then it never should have continued without Edith.
Absolutely! In my house they moved to California but came right back and stayed in the Jefferson's house lol No separation, no divorce and no death.
I believe that they did mention Edith in this episode and how the house wasn’t the same without her and Michael.
Come on. Edith was part of that show but Archie does well on his own. They did at least 2 more seasons without Edith. Thats a long time for a sitcom in those days.
They made it realistic. People die.
Im sure they lost a lot of sleep over that 😂
Mike lied. Archie asked Mike to always take care of Gloria. Mike said Archie would NEVER have to worry about that.
It wasn’t up to Archie to make decisions about Gloria’s life, Or meathead. If she wanted both of those men out of her life…so be it.

When Jean Stapleton decided to leave, It seemed pointless..
Can you imagine the Meathead's reaction to Trump?!?
Mike would have become catatonic and would have had to have had electro-shock therapy.
He’d be a bigger vegetable than Biden
Reiner really is a Meathead. He goes nuts at the mention of President Trump.
I’m confused, is the meat headed atheist a Democrat or a Republican? I don’t even like Rob Reiner or follow him on Twitter.
@@barbarafischbach8480 Imagine Archie's reaction to Trump.
It's terrible to hear that Mike ended up like this. By the end of All in the Family, he seemed like a pretty normal Dad with a good job and a family. Such a shame.
No, he is a MEAT HEAD AND ALWAYS BE A MEAT HEAD!!!
He was never anything more than a meathead.
Mike was a libtard.
MeatHead dead from the neck up.
Gloria married a dirty hippie, what did she expect.
I remember when Archie told Michael he was to good for Gloria when she cheated on him.
Gloria didn't leave Michael, that louse left her.
Might be silly but I pretend All in the family was cancelled after season seven and the family is still, “all in the family.”
I have to live in that same alternate universe.
Agreed
For me All In the Family seems like it ended when Mike and Gloria left for California at the end of season 8. Season 9 feels more like Archie Bunker's Place
Gloria was very rude to her Daddy who help put Meathead through school.
Gloria worked and put Mike thru school, Archie gave them both a place to live and food on the table.
@@justmeiniowa could they have a place to live and food and tuition costs without Archie? I don’t think so.
Mike "promised" that Gloria could go to college but college turned into Graduate School and a Ph.D

@@robertpreston2220 yeah it's so funny cuz my dad was a hippie i hated him weak man
Say what you want about later in life, but during all in the family, this and even the short lived spin off named "Gloria", Sally Struthers was a really good looking woman during those days.
Especially in the early seasons of AITF where she wore tight shorts with pigtails.mmmmmm
Versatile too. At the same time that She played "Gloria Stivic" on "All In The Family", Miss Sally Struthers voiced the part of "Fred and Wilma's Daughter Pebbles" in a CBS Saturday Morning version of life in "The Town of Bedrock!"😂🎤💃📺B.W.
ikr i hated Mike called her fat but made sure he ate off and lived off her and her parents he the one was fat
@@sassyd8738He sure did. She worked & put him through school while they lived with her family.
Mike was a Meathead in the show and he's even a BIGGER MEATHEAD right now !!! 🤣🤣
Yeah, he’s actually worse now than he was then. Can you imagine not growing in damn near 60 years?
Until I joined Twitter I never realized Reiner was type cast in the role of Mike.
Woke A$$
Right he didn't disappoint us??? 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤣
What he do
Can anyone picture lazy super indulgent Mike Stivic lasting for more than a month on a commune? There they would expect real work from him and Mike would never be able to abide sharing the same bathroom with fifty other people.
Allegedly, Bernie Sanders got kicked out of a commune in his hippie days because he did no work.
Once again, A. Bunker is proven right, this time about Mike Stivic's evil nature. Joey's nearly 50 now. I wonder how he's doing in the ABTVU(Archie Bunker TeleVision Universe)?
I would have much preferred that Mike was killed trying to help someone or was tragically murdered by trying to reason with a criminal -- than turning him into a cheating, overbearing, deadbeat forever. It would have made for better storytelling with the context of the characters they spent years developing. Both Archie and Gloria dealing with loss in their own ways. The respect that Archie would have developed for the man he called Meathead. It would have been much more depressing, but it would have served the characters and the show better.
A similar stunt was pulled on One Day at a Time when MacKenzie Phillips was fired from the show a second time after relapsing; the show wrote her out when her Julie character left her husband Max and infant daughter Annie which, looking back, made Julie a deadbeat mother which did not sit well with fans of the show. The writers could have written a better scenario should MacKenzie decided to return or had her killed off in an accident if she didn't want to return. But the show would end at the end of that season. Around the time Gloria returned to NYC, Rob Reiner declined to return because he was filming/directing the movie "This is Spinal Tap" which was released in 1984.
This shows version is far more realistic and likely tho
Academics are often overbearing.
The sad thing though is this is real life. Sometimes psrtners do become meatheads
I agree. Seems like lazy writing to me. These characters deserved better.
Totally wrong about Reagan...of course...
They shouldn't have played this for laughs. Mike and Gloria breaking up was a tragedy
He was a mooching bum
I really like how they made Gloria strong and real…and it made me get a bit teary seeing Archie not wanting Gloria to work while raising her son. I know that’s all counter-pc and would freak ppl out today, but I’m just looking at the sentiment-he didn’t mean it to diminish anyone-it seemed clear that he wanted Joey to have his mom around full-time, and I’m sure Archie was going to be out working to support everyone. Again, I know, not PC, but I gotta respect someone who values their family/beliefs enough to back them up. Lovely scene💗
Wow. No Edith
Yeah, gotta love science fiction.
The Politically correct card is beyond over used....it's pure & simple that a Father saw the importance of a child having his Mom home. How incredibly sweet & thoughtful of Archie. It has nothing to do with the over played record of Political correctness~
Look at this way when mike was in college remember archie wanted mike to work but oh his studies more important we saw the signs and ignored it
I thought Mike gave up his hippie ways by the middle of the 70's.
Once a meathead...always a meathead.
Funny thing is we come to see the Democrats do the same thing. Military Industrial Complex.

Yep……”dead from the neck up, a meat head”. The wisdom of Archie Bunker.
Mike was always a hippie at deep down... a particularly selfish hippie. So much for the man who said Archie would never have to worry about him looking after Archie's "little girl".
Carroll O'Connor had neautiful eyes.
Everyone. Notice the lighting. On all in the family the house was always brightly lit. The lighting in this scene is dark. Somber. Sobering. Almost cold. Far from the warmth that embraced Archie during All in the family. That was like a sitcom this was like if that sitcom became real. Everyone is older. Mike and Gloria divorced. Jeffersons moved away. Edith dead. Archie has come full circle and is accepting truths he previously denied earlier in life. That's life an ultimately Archie became what he was always meant to become. He's not a loveable bigot. Because he's simply not a bigot anymore. If he ever really was.
It was very dark...keen observation
They got rid of the studio audience, and installed a laugh track instead. Perhaps the atmosphere was intended to be bleaker due to the absence of Edith.
Edith was the light in the house, with her gone everything was drearier
The chemistry was off after Edith died.
I was disappointed with this explanation for the break up of their marriage, particularly aftwr it was shown what a decent person Mike was. It just didn't seem feasible that Mike would just turn his back on his family like that. Then again, I've known people who did show their true colors sooner or later.
Meathead promised Archie to take care of Gloria and Joey, turns out Archie was right all the time about him.

Lazy and bad writing. Stopped watching the show after Edith died.
The marriage was over long before they moved to California i mean when they said when they tired to rekindle their marriage that all they had in common was Joey. And then when hey moved to California when Edith and Archie went or their for Xmas. They found out. Gloria had an affair. So why blame mike Archie when he found it was Gloria. Isn't it immediately lonesome when the life of the home is gone. Ediths presence actually added a lot of life to the home
Same when my mom passed away. After she was gone, the heart of the home was gone. 😢
When my mom passed away, the same thing happened to us. She was the glue that held us together. I haven’t seen my immediate family in years.
That season of the show was kind of sad when edith was no longer part of the critical discussions.
This was Archie Bunker's Place, a different show. Edith had died by then.
So meat head turned out just like the actor who played him...
Shocker meathead abandons his family and responsibilities after having leached off Archie for years. Who could have seen that coming?
If Gloria is going to move into Archie’s house, he’s got the right to know why.
Leaving Meathead is the best thing she ever did!
He was a meathead then and he still is!!
Gloria cheated on Mike prior to this. They attempted to reconcile. But obviously the damage had been done.
I totally remember that! And Archie was beyond shocked when he found out about it.
I thought Gloria had an affair first?! They were separated & put on an act when The Bunkers came to visit.
She did. And Archie was beyond shocked when Gloria told him.
I'm glad my family quit watching this show long before this came around. It seems that Mike turned out to be what Archie was always accusing him of being.
yep
Archie was right!
a meathead?
Actually, here's what really happened. When you think about it, this was nothing more than a stupid producer maneuver, that had nothing to do with the man Michael Stivic was....his character never suggested he was the kind of man who would leave his wife and child. This was simply a bad move that was in poor taste by the producers / writers. It was dumb!
Because Archie was right from the very beginning...... Mike didn't turn out this way, he was ALWAYS this way.

The Meathead was wrong. Ronald Reagan didn't destroy the world. He saved it by winning the Cold War.
Let’s face facts: Gloria was always too beautiful for Michael. That’s why All in the Family was fiction. Ha!
Crazy. Everything Gloria described happening in the US is happening today.
This was honestly the most off character thing that could have happened with Mike. He would never have left his family like that. If his character had to go they should have just killed him off like they did Edith that would have been more believable
Having 2 of the main characters killed off might have been too much. Honestly I could see Mike and Gloria splitting up even on AITF. Mike always seem to feel superior to Gloria and could say some really nasty things to her insulting her intelligence when they would fight. Even calling her "stupid"
@@jonnaking3054 yeah, but dat aheess.
Yep...early Mike might have done something this. but not the Mike we saw him evolve into. They did the character dirty to set up a mediocre show that they lost control of, which then became downright lousy.
Trying to blame it on Ronald Reagan only made it worse.
Funny how fiction turns real life. None of us want to live in the world the way it is today .
Got that right
Sally looks so beautiful here.
I wish I could say I’m surprised but truth of the matter is Mike always been like that. Remember the episode of all in the family where they reminisce about when Mike and Gloria met
I agree I said the signs were shown all thru All in the family we just aint wanna see them he was all about college nothing much of anything else he grew up a lil bit but still made college his priority and loved living off them I use to always wonder why he wanted to get away from them i see why never wanted all that just what he got money and college degrees he wanted to be free and thats how it ended FREE no kids no wife he started back how she met him free
This AFTER Edith, Archie and Stephanie went to California for Christmas, found out Gloria and Mike were seperated due to her having an affair
Given they killed off Edith, it made no sense for them to give Sally Struthers her own show unless she and Carroll O’Connell had some strife going on. I always wondered why she didn't just remain on this show. Gloria could have definitely filled in the void being the woman and mother of the house and foil for Archie. We also could have had a brother and sister sort of dynamic with Joey and Stephanie. Considering both Gloria and this show got cancelled at the same time, I wonder had this one continued would they have had Gloria and Joey relocate with Archie for good. But if you ask me, they should have remained on this show.
Edith wanted out
The one thing that made no sense about this show was after Edith’s death, Mike not Gloria showed up to handle the arrangements or at least check in on Archie
Those were the days? Was life really simpler back in the 1970s-1980s?
Depends on who you ask.
Life has never been simple. It was however more decent in general.
Yes it was. People were allowed to be people
Yes
What would Archie be thinking in the 2020s with Wokeness, pronouns, lockdowns, Jab mandates, homelessness, etc.
They had trouble in paradise from the start. Their situation was the poster child for why everyone don't need to Marry. I grew up observing the same dysfunction in my family tree.
All in the family shows the ups and downs of the Bunker family, Archie Bunkers place shows it collapsing. I feel bad for Archie through this series. He had his hang ups but was more open minded then people would believe, He didn't deserve this.
Mike's gonna love what he sees in the 2010s.
Had forgotten how beautiful gloria was
Jesus Christ, how many sharks had this show jumped by this point? It's just sad.
Boy she spews nonsense about Reagan
A previous episode had Gloria cheating on Mike. It's not too surprising he would leave for a commune, since he eschewed some of those values when marrying Gloria - even sticking up for Archie when his hippie friends came to visit.
I like how Gloria had her own mind in this episode, complete with sharp wit.
This show was not afraid to be complex and daring to be controversial. Ditto for its sequel "704 Hauser".
The reason they wrote that in was that Rob Reiner didn't want to return to playing Mike, so they had to explain his absence.
Maybe they could have killed off his character like they did Edith's? Maybe killed in some protest?
What!!!! I didnt see this :O
Sally Struthers was certainly very pretty here. All in the Family was one of my all-time favorite shows, Archie Bunker's Place not so much.
I'm sorry but this is silly. Mike leaving is perfectly justified since Gloria chested on him before this. In fact I think because of that they were already divorced so what does it matter if he leaves to be with someone else?
They should bring back this show with Rob and Sally remarried to each other. Having to move into Archie's old home. Bring on Mel Brooks to play Robs father. Bring a bunch of wonderful actors to play neighbors. Valerie Berrtinill, Martin Short. Bring on Dick Van Dyke to make some appearances. I think with great writers and there's so many beloved actors that could be apart and make it a great ensemble cast. So much talent that just waiting to be seen again.
No thanks, no one under 50 knows who any of those people are.

I think the writers did a disservice making Mike desert his family. He loved Edith and he loved Archie regardless.
In all fairness ,Mike was right to leave Gloria but I think he should have fought for custody of Joey .
Neither of them were admirable
They did the Mike Stivic character dirty jut to set the premise for a mediocre sitcom.
Like when Norman Fell and Audra Lindley were booted from Three's Company to set up a sitcom just because the British version had done so. In that case they did the actor Norman Fell dirty. The producers said they could return if the spinoff didn't last, but then kept the show on life support just long enough to renege. We then had to suffer years of Mr. Furley.
Regan was the best president. Loved All in the family, but Hollywood always for Democrats and it sad because JFk put us in Vietnam, they didnt say that in the 70s...so there is bad on both sides..
Great casting. Some of the best I've seen.
Kudos to Gloria for wanting to step up and take care of her son when her husband went bonkers, BUT- the rest doesn't add up.
Mike chooses to be an adulterer or, at the very least, leave his wife for some other woman+ Mike chooses to become a deadbeat dad+ Mike chooses to join a "commune"= Ronald Reagan is to blame?
If my dad left my mom and joined a "commune" with some other woman, is that Joe Biden's fault? Exactly...🤦♀️
I also agree that, if the Mike Stivvik character had to be written off, he should've been shot trying to stop an armed robbery or killed by a runaway truck while trying to help an elder put their groceries in their car. Like everyone else, Mike had his flaws, but he was a very compassionate man- should've written him off that way, not having him go crackers like that...
He's still a meathead in real life.
