  • We've all had that small motor that only runs with the choke on, here's how to fix it by cleaning the carburetor jet. Applies to all small engines like a snowblower, mower, trimmer weedeater, blower, chainsaw etc.

Thanks for posting this! I have a John Deere D105 that would only run with the choke on. I was going to pull the carburetor and clean it or replace it when I saw this video. I was able to pull the main jet without removing the carb and in ten minutes, I was back up and running. I really appreciate channels like yours that keep me from having to spend big money on easy fixes!!!

Cutting torch tip cleaners work the best. They are about $2 and come with all sizes. They are cut like a file to remove fouling.

Brand new carb, exact replacement, does exactly same as prior, almost new carb. Has nothing to do with "dirty jets", screwed float level, goofed fuel line. Requires 1/2 choke to run smoothly. With choke fully open, droplets of raw gasoline are seen momentarily in the air just above the choke plate.

I used a sewing kit needle to push through the hole in the jet after cleaning out the inlet,… A little carburetor cleaner after, and it worked perfectly. Great video for an easy fix.

Yep that works too. Usually the buildup is so small and a similar color to the brass jet that it's hard to see but you clear that hole and it'll run!

WYPO torch tip cleaners work great on different jet orifices.

I had exactly this “choke needed” condition on a Briggs & Stratton 11 HP engine, and your fix worked 100% . Super well explained in the video. Thanks . I used cutting torch tip cleaner files as mentioned in an earlier post and spray carb cleaner. Now “no choke” needed at high RPMs. 🥳

Not always. I have a torch tip cleaner and could not open the jet on my Cub Cadet. It's plugged solid. I had another carb that I cleaned to get the blower running, but since I didn't have the correct bit, the plugged jet remains in my tool chest.

Yeah, every couple years I have to clean the Jet in mine even putting stable in isn’t helping. I am just going to run non-ethanol fuel in that from now on.

The last day before i went overseas last week, I had a job. It should have taken 30 mins to mow (about 2 acres), but 5 mins in it stopped. The only way it would run was half throttle and full choke, haha. It did clear for 2 mins or so initially buy then was 2x worse... long story short, took me 3 hours instead. I kinda hoped I would melt something so i could buy a new one, but no, lol. (30hp kawasaki)

This may be the solution to my problem, do you think the passage from the main jet to the carb could also need cleaning on Mine

Get an index drill bit set. That what the orifice sizes are exactly.

What is you have a Coleman motor that you can’t remove the jets in the carb? All it has is a bowl drain bolt. Can’t take off the actual bowl :(

Awesome video I have the exact same problem with my wood chipper and I am going to try the exact same process as you did I'm pretty sure it will work just makes good sense. I wanna leave you with a question I have a lawn more that starts up And runs fine but when it warmed up if you turned it off it will not restart. Why wouldn't anybody do this well I use it to get the small areas in the yard are multiple leaves into the catcher So when the catcher fills I must stop the Lawn mower and hence the problem I cannot restart any suggestions thank you great video

How do you go from a 66 to a 65 by enlarging the hole, wouldn't it be the opposite going from a 65 to a 66?

Just make it fast and simple everyone. Carb cleanner and a wire to clean it out. This is unnecessary

    • @buildsomethingstupid1736
      @buildsomethingstupid1736  9 місяців тому +1

Exactly! Just clean the jet. I thought it appropriate to pull the jet so everyone can see and understand exactly what they are doing and why. This gives a good illustration of a narrowing jet causing a lean running condition. Also as I mentioned in the video, since new I have found the Snowblower to be hard starting and it really didnt like to run when it was 0 degrees out. Bore the main jet 1 size larger and these problems are solved.

fuel flow to the carb? plugged tank cap not letting fuel flow out? fuel valve malfunction, not letting fuel flow? Try disconnect fuel line, then turn on fuel with cap on, see if fuel flows to carb freely.
