I think it was a hidden meaning to offering him the water and not booze. IRA are so consumed with their mission they don't even have time to drink water
Love this scene, it's such a microcosm of the show. Some "different class of organization" threatens Tommy's interests (Russian Oligarchy, British Parliament, Italian Mafia, the list goes on) and Tommy's got to play his hand perfectly to survive and eventually profit. Malacki Byrne set the stage for 5 more seasons of villainy.
That's the main weakness of the show imo, it's repetitive. I was entertained by all 5 seasons, but I completely get why so many of my mates stopped halfway through. It is a bit too formulaic.
In the show the russian oligarchy aren’t his threats in S3 It’s Section D. Tommy is f**king the Russian oligarchy wouldn’t call that opposite interests lol.

drinking the whole class of water in front of Tommy is great writing for this new rival. It shows that he's very comfortable in confronting Shelby and that he's speaking from sincerity about what they will do. It's the same concept of cops leaving food in front of you when they throw you in an interrogation room and let you sit alone for a bit. If you're innocent and have nothing to worry about, you'd probably be comfortable enough to eat. It's not 100% an indicator that the person is innocent but it gives them an idea of who they're dealing with.
The reason he says he is from South Armagh ,is ...an out of time form of menace, referring to the part of Ulster the British feared the most during the troubles ,"bandit country" with constant ambushing terrain ,and a "foreign border" with countless passing points. Nowadays its more of a reference to tough bastards that play GAA.
I agree your point, but also, pretend not, “peaky Blinders,” is anachronistic phantasmagori. I do like the latent resolve the S.A. Respects. Fervent people committed now and always to best living and peace.
What makes the rare shows like Peaky Blinders a "cut above " the dross that TV companies churn out year after year is the Dialogue , the writing , it has depth meaning purpose and realism . Everything I have ever watched on TV etc in the past 60 years that has been worth my time all have one thing in common superb writing . That's why 95 % of TV productions are absolutely dire or formulaic . the acting sets , etc etc are all secondary Writing first and last every time .
Perfect explanation, actually. This is why I have such trouble telling folks what genre I'm into. Uh.. the "well written" genre? A lazy bit of writing takes me out of the moment and possibly out of the show. I have so many half-watched Netflix shows.. but peaky blinders is a cut above.
Could it signify that the enemy has only visions of dominating Tommy, so their view is blinkered with a solid back drop with Tommy centre but Tommy has eyes past the road block and out through the window. Or is it for the enemy to get back through that door they have to deal appropriately with Tommy as Tommy controls the route Lastly If the enemy is against an external wall and is of significantly high risk, a car 💣 could roll up as Tommy leaves the room to collect something for the person left as sitting duck. I think it’s a mix of 1-2 visually showing forward thinking but with the physical dominance of the space and ownership of the route to safety
“But they have become a burden to me… perhaps it is time to unload that burden… for the right price” The perfect combination of counter-intimidation and resolution.
