Oh, I can't wait to do this. I have put up with some even worse stains on my floor for a long time--they are so awful! I didn't know what to do! I am starting this right now. Thank you for the video!
Excellent tutorial! It feels so deflating to see stains on your hardwood floors. This gives me hope for a small area on an area this size in my hallway.
California life, whoever you are, whatever your name is, I want to tell you I appreciate you, love you, and thank you so much for doing this video. You probably never know how much I appreciate this because you saved me thousands of dollars. 🥰😍😘😘Thank you from the bottom of my heart
that was more of the floor being scuffed from the garbage leaving a black residue behind ..so this is def a great video you gave it a good deep grain cleaning without actually sanding it yet scrubbing it and a good coat awesome job. thanx for posting it. great idea for cleaning ladies
Wonderful Tutorial! I must admit the most important thing I learned here is that brilliant little "Leave the cap half on" to not dump the HP all over. I've never been good at thinking outside the box. A Woman in the home is invaluable! Thank you, maam!
@@soapoperasoftherealworldby6854 Thankyou for this video. You have saved people thousands and showed us we don't have to leave it and look at a bad spot like this. Ty!
My .02$. Using a slightly darker stain blended better for me than the original Miniwax Stain. I orginally used Miniwax Finish Pecan 245. I replaced it with choosing a darker tint. I applied the Minwax MW1107 Amber which was purchased at Lowes. Blended perfect !! (I suppose the hydrogen Peroxide and sanding effect the wood and makes the wood turn white so that using the original stain will not not penetrate the same ) Anyway going darker worked for me and I had many bad spots caused by urine from two small male dogs who mark their territory on my hardwood floors. *** one more tip: Anyone giving away dogs on Caigslist is NOT gonna give away a perfect dog. My two small males mark their territory in the house and I cannot figure out how to correct their behavior. They mark their territory when I am not looking and the dogs know it is wrong.
Hydrogen peroxide will also work for cat urine smells. If you have a wood floor, you know how difficult it can be to eliminate that smell. I used a syringe to literally inject it into openings. Repeated applications were required, but it worked! It also helps that the reacting H2O2 bubbles up some of the dried pee (now dissolved into the water since the H2O2 is only 3%), meaning you can wipe away whatever rises to the surface. Do a little every evening until the smell is gone and/or the H2O2 no longer bubbles up (i.e., there's nothing left to react with).
Thank you so much! I just bought a house that had 50+ year old carpet over beautiful hardwood floors and it's absolutely covered in pet stains and spills. Will definitely give this a try.
@@californialife3191 The bigger problem is how to remove embedded dirt from the seams of old hardwood floors - wood filler is not the answer ... anybody have any ideas?
@@douglascarlson9006 - if there are big seams, and the dirt is not finished in place with poly or other finish, I would want to try a stiff bristled brush, or possibly even fine stainless wire to loosen up the dirt, possibly blowing it out with a fine compressed air nozzle, and then vacuum it all up. Might also find a wet process with a stiff toothbrush to loosen the dirt up, then saturate and wet vac.
this is freakin awesome, I have the 35% food grade hp and can dilute down to whatever strength I want, going to experiment on pet stain, ty for sharing
so I've been trying the hp and it's actually working, the stain was so dark and it's lightened up a lot. I put bubble wrap on top to keep it from drying too fast and it works. Sometimes it's still wet the next day. I just bought the regular 3% so I can keep my food grade.... I'm probably halfway there. Thanks again for the solution.
@@californialife3191 I have multiple problem areas all due to dog pee, and one was from laundry soap soaking in. This worked great for both spots. I hope others see this!
In your case, the finish was worn off, which left exposed wood grain to collect dirt. (And allowed wood to darken/stain from water/uv/other assuming you wash the foor). So you mainly scrubbed out the dirt. The very light water discoloration was lightened via the bleaching(H Peroxide), yes, to some degree. The sanding creates dust which lightens the surface temporaily(so don't be fooled by that effect). However, it can remove very minor staining that is only surface deep. But mainly the repeating scrubbing/wiping was removing more dirt each time you did it. The point here is that your floor was not deeply stained or warped from extreme amounts of water. So a very easy case. For major water damage and or pet stains, specially formulated wood bleach will be neccesary. And even then it won't dissapear completely. Unless you bleach to extreme. Only deep sanding will expose undamaged/unstained wood in that case. Or staining the floor a dark color will blend the damaged areas. Final note: Never scrub or sand against(perpendicular) to wood grain. Even scotch bright pad. Grain is made up of softer and harder layers(summer vs winter growth). Softer wood will sand away faster. So sand/scrub accordingly. If my thoughts are not helpful then feel free to try your own methods and ignore mine, lol.
I have had better luck with zar stains as they do not seal the surface once they dry. Heat the stain in an old crockpot as it will help the stain penetrate better.Keep in mind if you use hydrogen peroxide and you plan on staining you are going to need to use a stain controller as the hydrogen peroxide seems to affect how the stain penetrates. If the stain is still there after the use of hydrogen peroxide try using Bar Keepers Friend as it has oxalic acid in it. You should really use an osculating sander instead, as that type will leave swirl marks.
Great tutorial fantastic outcome; from beginning to end I didn't miss a second. Question did the strainer have a strong scent? I will try this. Thanks for sharing.
The previous owners put down a jute runner between my kitchen island sink and microwave/cabinet area.. The jute runner did not have a mat underneath... I never paid attention to the area until after we moved in and i noticed the previous owners left the runner. The jute runner has rubbed off the protective gloss coat on the wood floor and the area under the entire rug looks just like the area you repaired in your video... Its literally a 2x5 ft strip of ugly. Can i perform the same method you did on this area of my floor??
This ended up amazing! Were your stains from water ..? I have a stain little bit smaller but looking like that which is water damage. Do you think the hydrogen peroxide will work for that?
I think maybe do the sanding first with electric sander. Then hydrogen peroxide after if the stain is still there. Might save a lot of time. But still looks great. 1000 ways to do anything. But great work
I wonder if this will work for my flooring sanded the floor but the area by the bathroom is darker and I can see where ever nail has stain the wood black as well.
Thank you. We have stains like this in the living room and master bedroom. However, the floors are not sealed with something like the polyurethane. How does that change the procedure, if at all? Adrian
Wait, garbage compactor is a real thing? I am loving your wood care tips, but wtf does a garbage compactor do to the point you have an appliance for that
Thanks for the peroxide tip!! Normally wood floors are stained to a desired color then there are a couple clear coats of usually polyurethane (water or oil base) put over the colored wood stain. The clear coats range from dull to very glossy depending on preference. The clear coats add a barrier to make floors cleanable & more moisture resistant. Were these floors never clear coated?
Our floor is at least 20+ years old.. and the color looks similar to yours! Maybe a tiny bit lighter but because of the sun age maybe its even the same color ? The problem is that if I fix a spot with the original color.. (which I can only guess ) it would be too saturated right ? Like since the color faded over time. I'd have to find something thats a lighter shade of the original color ? Sorry long post !
