Not really stupid, They just count on someone else doing the actual job. They are business people, after all. So "take the money and let someone else do the actual work". They glued their airfix kits together like crap, so why should this be any different?
Remote lab on Mars: I was thinking that too. I suppose there would be less analysis possible though, since institutions in such a program would be competing for time on the few labs on Mars rather than each receiving a small sample to analyze in their own labs.
10:30 pity we don't have David Bowie anymore to comment on that. Agreed, we don't want another facehuggers and xenomorphs, haha. Tunnels on Mars? Something for Colin Furze, haha! I may loathe Felon Mollusk and keep saying he fell so low he's next to Putin now, but still admire the engineers and workers at SpaceX for what they achieved. I will also criticize SpaceX for some of their actions like spouting thousands of satellites into the orbit, contributing to space congestion and making future spaceflight harder and riskier. I'm a fan of '60s cars too, but also like the '80s sports cars with their sleek curvy lines and futuristic dashboards. I like muscle cars like Ford Mustang (or Mad Max's V8 Interceptor). Cars these days have become so overgrown they're impractical and overtly dangerous while advertised as being safer than others. It's a friggin' arms race out there. Wondering about the Google situation. AT&T had a pan-American range, but Google is global. Far more people will be affected. Obstructing the sunlight? Hell no. Fucking up the planet to prevent other ways it is being fucked up is just... yeah, you've guessed it... fucked up. End of an elitist tradition, that's right. I'm absolutely in favor of having meals together, but make it accessible and affordable for everyone. "NOT THE BEES!"
So, what are the REAL benefits of public-private partnerships between NASA and private corporations? It’s sounding more like a politically based arrangement so governmental organizations (ie NASA) can absolve themselves of liability, regardless of cost (which is typically much larger for us, taxpayers), and benefiting private corporations that rake in huge profits. When will these facts be revealed?
NASA DOESN'T RUN NASA. Congress does. So your revelation is based on "semi-facts". You are dead-on about the huge contractors, but NASA's hands are tied.
Tin foil hat time: Bill Nelson got a tap on the shoulder from the white house that it would be very bad for his career if something happened to the astronauts before the US election in November.
You might be interested, or maybe not, to know that Rebecca Oppenheimer, quoted in the article about the food at Mt Palomar, is a trans woman, out since 2014. I don't see any significance in that. But it's a sign of the times that it's not mentioned in every article every time she is cited or mentioned. Still a long way to go, but there's progress.
Point on the extra provisions and capacity for Starliner: They wouldn't need any additional resources to have them there for the additional 6 months. There were planned to be 4 members of Crew 9, and there would still be four members of Crew 9. Two of them would just be different people than they were originally expecting. So, no extra capacity requirements. Also from the sounds of things, it's not so much that NASA as a whole doesn't have 100% confidence. Most of NASA is confident along with Boeing, but there is a holdout of a small group of engineers at NASA that aren't as confident, but I don't know who they are or what their qualifications are.
Fran,You may have already covered this but many new fans I am sure ( who like I am fascinated by all the equipment around you) would like to know more about the type of work you perform.❤

Hi. I think it would be awesome to see your perspective on Elon musk's colonization of Mars project. It's viability, tech hurdles, what has been overcome, etc.
I hate that Boeing is such a disaster. Mismanagementeering over engineering has been a bad, bad confirmation of the need to rethink the concept of "management".
SpaceX also likes to keep SpaceX as separate from Elon as possible. They always have some easily-solved problem on hand to show him when he comes around so he can pretend he saved the day by coming up with the solution and they can send him away thinking he's a hero
Dear Fran, could you please do an item on a nice little rocket company called Rocket Lab. They are into earth observation, cleaning up space junk, pharmaceuticals manufacturing in zero G, and much more. Also they seem to be a nice bunch of people. With thanks, Pete.
You didn't say why you think it's a bad idea for possible Mars life to be brought here, but I hope you don't believe it would have any chance of outcompeting (or even surviving) the life that's been intensely training for a billion years here. Add to that that Mars rocks have spontaneously come to Earth innumerable times already and I'm not sure I see what the problem is.
Meteorites are sterile because they are heated to thousands of degrees entering Earth's atmosphere. As for human immunity to an alien microbe, you go first.
@@FranLab From "Astrobiology At NASA": > Taking the Temperature of a Martian Meteorite > April 2, 2001 [….] > New research by Benjamin Weiss and his colleagues at the California Institute of Technology indicates that at least one such meteorite - ALH84001 - didn’t get all that hot. Weiss’s team believes that the interior of ALH84001 was never heated above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). “The rock had probably never even been above room temperature since before it left Mars,” says Weiss. > Because temperatures below 40 C cannot sterilize most bacteria, their study suggests that if meteorites like ALH84001 contained living organisms, they could, in theory, transfer life between planets in the solar system. > “This study has lowered the maximum temperature - by a significant amount - into the range where biology ought to be able to survive without any trouble,” says Jay Melosh, professor of theoretical geophysics at the University of Arizona.
Edison motors is pretty cool they reserved a tesla semi and waiting for it they built their own hybrid semi. They are from Canada and ordered a cybertruck but still waiting they going to make thier own hybrid truck with a retro kit.

Fran I love your content. Thank you so much! I'm sad that your view of Elon Musk programs are so biased. I've watched videos of much work on environmental mitigations for SpaceX including the trenching that you said isn't done they're building them right now.
Jeepers! Spacex in danger of becoming a space monopoly! Muscling out the competition! So, the man and his organization that is lowering the cost of spaceflight to the point where humanity can finally get out into space in a serious way, is suddenly a "problem"? Why should SpaceX win so many contracts, just because they are not throwing away the whole rocket every time they launch? Pinning your hopes on Blue Origin is interesting. I like Rocket Lab as a competitor, myself. Stoke Space is also interesting. You really need to do some deeper thinking on things before falling into the "Elon Bad" narrative trap. Edit: I had paused the video and posted the above just before you launched into the Trans topic. I actually did not know that you were Trans, so I can see why you may view Elon through a more emotionally charged lens. I won't get into that whole topic, except to say that Elon's issues are around the age of consent, not about "anti Trans" as far as I can tell. At least I understand (a little bit) about why you don't like Elon.
Even if we ignored Elon's right wing politics, he's still just a spoiled loser who has only failed upwards. He hasn't started any companies, and is ruining Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter. He wouldn't even be who he is without his daddies emerald mine money. I find it funny he takes issue with gender affirmative surgeries, when he himself added hair with hair plugs, and had surgery on his jaw.
Thanks for the news, Fran!
Elon's Wild West Outlaw name is Billy the Kids don't talk to me anymore.

Boeing = the Gibson guitars of the aerospace industry . And hell yes make them pay for a mission to bring them back early.
Starliner is playing like the White socks… they can do better, but they choose not to
Tin foil hat time: Bill Nelson got a tap on the shoulder from the white house that it would be very bad for his career if something happened to the astronauts before the US election in November.
I'm sure this is completely about Boeing and NASA. It's not a Soyuz, after all.
You had me at "kung fu bees."
It's not Boeing anymore it's Douglas.
The fomer safety was their aim, the latter just sell it no matter what.

Shit for Boeing, profit over safety. I wonder if the astronauts are actually pleased they get to stay there longer.

Do they get overtime pay for that extra time stuck on the ISS?
Just the bonus time looking out the window.
The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one they said 🎵👾
Left without the means to move from somewhere, sounds stranded to me.
They are not stranded. The ISS has the Assured Crew Return Vehicle (ACRV). Astronauts can return at anytime if they have to.
