    Make a to do list - Yep
    Make a daily list - Uh huh
    Write things to do on white board - Mhm
    Estimate time I do everything - Yes
    Fudge ratio time buffer - Got it
    Commitment to your plan - Ah, that's where I go wrong.

      +KakinTseGamePlayer have you triangulated every part of the pan with complicated calculus. Then given yourself a scenario outcome to follow if every possible event were to happen in a 20 page flow chart with colour coding.....
      If so you are procrastinating. Fudge ratio time buffer sounds like procrastination.
      end result= 100 pages of planning. You were only meant to write 1000 words on a chapter of a book.
      I just go for a walk and come back to it. You stop wasting time when you intentionally do something else which is productive but unrelated to the work, like getting procrastination out the way in one sweep.

      +jorgepeterbarton YOU SOUND LIKE A MANAGER THAT WILL MAKE A VERY POOR LEADER. A MANAGER ONLY FOLLOWS THE RULES. THIS IS FOR A LEADER THAT MAKES THE RULES AND NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF THE CONSEQUENCES OR UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF CHOICES. POPULAR OR NOT

      Pete Deiler wut? yeh i'm in a self employed career so it probably a different skill. I manage and lead myself. Have no desire to manage and lead others, my personality type I suppose would find it horrible (you know the rule that only people who don't care bout others to a psychopathic level become politicians, and if not cold, it breaks people...) . But i do a good job managing myself thanks.

    I see everyone complaining about "I have no drive/commitment/motivation" and nobody seems to realize that... you've gotta do things that you don't want to do. Like, 90 percent of the time. 100 percent if you suffer from depression. The key is to force yourself to your own happiness. Stop waiting until you "feel like it". You're never gonna feel like it.
    Motivation isn't part of the plan, for a good reason. There will never be a "how to" for motivation. Stop lying to yourself and just get things done. You can be happy later, and I mean truly happy, not "I watched netflix all morning"-happy.

After a short while I just end up doing whatever the fuck I want to do and at this point I really dont know what to do. My brain just doesnt like following rules, or "should do". How can people like me find a deeper reason to stick to this.

    Also filming yourself while studying in a time lapse and uploading that video to tumblr is motivating. There is a whole community supports and pushes each other to be productive. all the planning scares me... when every slot on the calendar is filled im not me anymore im just a machine

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX 8 років тому +2

      Who is this »you«, though?
      Isn't it just another machine on auto-mode that's ultimately following a particular pattern as well?
      Just because something isn't planned and thus the reaction comes more spontaneously doesn't necessarily mean that it's any more »you« than if this »you« followed a plan.
      After all, that plan also comes from that »you«, as it must have been set up at one point in time.
      So in the end, you just made some decisions earlier than you would have otherwise.
      And isn't that just what planning is meant to do?

    • @LoneWolf-wp9dn
      @LoneWolf-wp9dn 8 років тому +2

      LinkEX
      meh just words... i know what im talking about... sometimes you just need to get a lot of stuff done for exterior reasons and they end up taking up all of your time... after a week like that i feel like drinking my brains out cause i didnt do anything for my self all week... but i did that because i was constrained to do that for constructive purposes is hard to fathom... its not that i never do constructive work but its hard to plan like that

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX 8 років тому +3

      Lone Wolf Well, then the problem is not so much the planning than merely coming to the realization through the planning that you don't actually have as much leisure time as you'd like to have.
      Thinking you'd have more if you didn't plan is a fallacy. In fact, good planning often leaves more time for yourself, as you know when you can afford to lean back.
      I don't always plan either because I make the same mistake and like to persuade myself that there's still time to do the stuff I'm supposed to do later.
      But in the end, procrastinating only increases the time you have for yourself at the cost of being forced to cut down the time of doing something constructive and ending up with something half-assed.
      As a compromise, you could plan with a less restrictive schedule right away (which is what you should do to begin with - before you don't plan at all, better just plan a little bit, and leave the rest of the day open so you don't feel constrained).
      Better settle with the middle ground and be proactive every so often than always be reactive.

    • @Kojitsu
      @Kojitsu 8 років тому +7

      When your calendar is filled with things you actually want to do, accomplish, and enjoy, what part of that isn't you? I find that when I make plans and stick to them I'm being more true to myself because I'm not listening to my impulses. I don't identify with my impulses, my thoughts, or anything that tugs at me for control over my actions(especially against my better judgment.) Intention is key, you are in the pilot seat, find out what you want and take control of your body or it will take control of you, THEN you are just a machine, running on habits and impulses. Autopilots don't make plans.

    Your insights are great.
    It's easy to get confused when everyone around seems to be " busy " , while not being totally productive, so the question arises : " Is being ' busy ' the optimal way for productivity ? " and the answer is a colossal " NO " .
    Being busy arises often from a constant feeling of pressure and irritability; busy people are unconsciously being in a state of constant tension , because they don't master time , but get defeated by it. The reason for this is that they don't apply the formula:
    Focus -> Analyze goals/Required Actions/Current Situation/Etc. -> Plan -> Execute
    I like very much your idea of " fudge ratio " , because that is very logical and often one gets nervous because not fitting in the time causes stress, but this problem gets solved by the fudge ratio. I call it " dynamic planning " also, because for every plan that one has, it is a smart idea to make it dynamically changing, in case in which it is required.

    Suggestion for a video: How do you stay motivated to keep doing accomplished goals. Things that are necessary to maintain in an accomplished state, not just to achieve. Example: Have a daily fasting blood sugar of less than 110. Once you achieve the goal, the sense of accomplishment stamps "done" and it is hard to remember to check the blood sugar after that. This can apply to a number of things, financial goals, etc. It is almost like success is the beginning stage of failure.

    This is great advice. I need to diversify my study times better. Sometimes I'll just stare at a set of homework problems after two hours of intense study, when I could have solved the rest in 30 min if I worked on it the next day. Math + words = .....squiggly lines.

    This is such a crucial video. The idea of productive vs busy is something relevant to everyone, even and sometime especially outside of the school environment. I feel that while in school I was ridiculously productive, able to knock out a masters program and graduate by 22 in only 3 semesters, with a 3.98 GPA... I never appreciated the importance of that accomplishment and what it showed about my work ethic until much later in life. Jump forward to being a full time work from home entrepreneur I was lost in the trap of BUSY ALL THE TIME, nothing to show for it ever. smh I had to step back and analyze myself, my life, and what changed. The idea of school seemed obvious, this is just what I'm supposed to do - I have to do my schoolwork, etc. When it came to my own life projects, with no teacher handing out a syllabus, that's where the busy crept in and productivity stopped. Appreciate your channel and this information being presented so much!

    I hear a lot of people saying "I have a lot to do", but the weeks go and go on, and they never get those things done!, it's amazing how some people can spend their time doing simply nothing, and, it's okay, "do nothing" is awesome. I always think of easy things become when you just "leave your pc and cellphone away", you do a lot of stuff that way :)

    I love this. This is pretty much exactly what I began to do and it.is.awesome. I went out and bought a daily planner complete with labeled hours. I write down everything and know exactly when I should be doing tasks and where I need to be.
    Factoring in buffer time is such a great tip. It took me much longer than it should have to figure out tasks rarely go as planned. Great advice! Thanks for sharing :)

    Don't bother seeing "busy-ness" as a needed virtue. What you want instead, is the self-awareness of WHY you would want to get work done in the first place. The saying goes "where there's a will, there's a way", which speaks to the "WHY", and no system of techniques or apps will ever be the magical formula to this. Even after the will is acquired, the work one does should be more about quality than quantity. The more we develop the genuine will, the more heart we will put into the work we do, the more valuable it will be, and the less "quantity" of it will ever matter. That is the virtue of simply being present. :)

    Thomas, I loved this video. I have read IboNLable's (somewhat hateful) comment below, but for me, it worked. You did NOT just focus on to do lists, and motivation alone doesn't work, either! There are thousands of motivational videos on youtube that help, but are not enough! What's helped me is what you said about focusing on OUTPUT. Not doing things, but OUTPUT. Excellent stuff, thanks.

    I believe it has to be adaptable. My schedule is fairly simple (school work/studying/classes/p.t. work/volunteer work) but I also struggle with doing what I need to do with no one watching - mainly school work/studying. My major involves theory (reading and understanding) and also a lot of hands-on skills (involving step-by step tutorials and hands-on practice in a lab).
    I guess I could be considered lucky because I have it all mapped out for me in a gigantic syllabus. Therefore, I always know what I need to do. It's the doing it when I need to in order not to waste time that takes commitment. I usually map out my day the night before, not a week or month before, but the night before. I put out usually at least 3 big general tasks (what I need to read, what I need to practice that day, what hours I'll be working for $) that must be accomplished no matter what followed by more specific tasks that could technically be put off or just aren't very important (calling someone not business related - buying energy drinks). With many things on my to-do list my mind is usually filled with the things I should be doing. Although I know subconsciously I'll more often not accomplish everything on my list in a day, my important tasks are usually accomplished and its easier not to steer off course from pertinent things.
    This may sound all-over the place but I have at least a mild case of A.D.D. that makes sticking to my essentials a decent challenge. It works for me. I stay busy, what I do is usually worth doing (as Tom Edison says-productive), and I've accomplished a good amount since I began using this plan a year and a half ago.
    Great video, though. I really appreciated it.
