Sometimes I can watch a TV show like bringing sexy back which is I believe in Australian TV show on Netflix...and seeing people with that drive makes me driven.
But once the glow of their success and the, "if they can do this, then I should be able to do that" feeling dissipates.
I have my own business that I have been stuck trying to build up for years and I'm not getting anywhere.
I have chores at home that need to be done and organization. But my 'sense of priority' is not there. Do I do the chore, do I try to make the video, if I do the video am I going to waste time because of not knowing the flow the video needs.
I live in a town that is not tiny, but also doesn't have "Life Coaches" or "Professional Organizers". You seem to be super knowledgeable about the subject and may have a thought that has helped you or idea that can direct me (and possibly others).
Thank you for your time (your time reading this & making your videos).

One thing that I do whenever I feel overwhelmed is disconnecting from social media or technology as much as I can. What the constant flow of information on the internet it can add to me feeling overwhelmed plus being disconnected from technology can also help me get a lot of my work done which will help me feel less overwhelmed since it ends up getting me a little bit ahead.

@@stephaniemuller5500 I tend to either uninstall all of my social media or if I am presently using a couple of them I will uninstall all that I don't use or if I can simply just use it on my laptop I'll uninstall it on my phone so I am not constantly checking it. If I don't need my phone then I will also turn it off and hide it somewhere. (I obviously know where it is but since I hide it, it's always out of vision so I am less likely to be tempted by it) Then I also disconnect from the internet if I can or at least limit which sites I can go to. Over a longer period I try to do 30 day challenges where I am not watching any Netflix or Hulu because I end up getting sucked into the shows and wasting a lot of time. Overall, this results in me focusing more on a few things rather than consuming a bunch of content from all over the internet, which allows my mind to be more free from distracting thoughts so I can focus on what really matters, get it done, or have a better understanding of it because it is not being interrupted by other information.

Hey Thomas! I wanted to share with you something my therapist told me once. He said "Ok, you work and are passionate about your work. You work out and eat healthy so your body is well. You like reading and you have plenty of fulfilling hobbies. But when do you slow down? I mean, when do you take a minute to connect with yourself?"
And this made me think a lot, and I realised that that's what my life was missing: a moment of literally doing nothing, not be listening to music, not be listening to a podcast in the background, completely disconnected from any technology and any task, just staring out the window and letting my thoughts rub free. I used to feel very overwhelmed all the time, but ever since I have started doing this once in a while, I have felt much healthier and relaxed and energetic.
Just a thought that I wanted to share with you so maybe you can explore it and see if you find it works :)

@Papacito RICOAnxiety is a state of anxiousness. There are two types of anxiety - clinical and reactive. Reactive is generally considered normal - something happens that creates a sense of anxiousness or threat. Clinical anxiety is a diagnosable state such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, ocd - there are 11 syndromes. Clinical anxiety used to be called neurosis and someone that exhibited anxiety (syndrome) is often referred to as neurotic. There are numerous symptoms and I would be very surprised if you not suffered some form of anxiety. Clinical anxiety is generally considered treatable and somewhat resolvable unlike psychosis which is to be managed. Anxiety can cause a lot of lost days of being ble to go to work; hospital visits; downtime and is frequently involved with depression. So a very common diagnosis (example) is generalized anxiety disorder with major depressive disorder. These conditions are significantly consequential and the earlier diagnosis the more effective treatment.

I think one of the most important thing to remember is that overwhelm is a symptom of our HABITS, not our TASKS. If we don't look at the patterns that led us there (boundaries, routines, bad habits, mindset, everything), we'll just wind up there again.

My brilliant advice: forget hard work and put chill as a very high priority in life. I don't envy highly successful people at all. I know I'm enjoying life a lot more overall, even if I can't show it off.
The root of the overwhelm problem is fear. You're afraid of being perceived as low status. Let go of it and you'll be happy. I promise! As a rule of thumb, when you see people desperately seeking validation on social media, you should feel sorry for them, not envious. Then you know you've made it!
This actually does not go that much against the advice of the video. You will still find motivation this way, but they'll be more natural. Things like learning to play piano for no good reason for example, like the video said.

Hi! We have the same viewpoint in life. I also just want to stay lowkey, just making enough to get through life and help my family.
I'm having anxiety attacks right now and I freeze and wanting to kill myself. I have this undying issue with my mother wherein she wants me to offer help to relatives. I expressed my point that I couldn't do that and probably won't help in the way she wants me to but every time this happens, she would say I'm being ungrateful and I should pay them back.
I constantly want to help, I'm happy to do help but the way I can and want. I recently can't control my anxiety attacks and just freeze. You won't believe it's like hell. I'm living but I'm not.
I have an issue with my health and I don't know how to source for the expenses of that, paying my share to our mortgage, paying another bill. All of these are super important and I don't know what to prioritize. Not to mention that my earnings aren't enough plus I'm constantly sprinting to earn more, more and more.
I want to take a break and reconnect myself but I can't do that because I'm broke af.

"If I continually put all my time into my business just because I feel that the force multiplier is there, just because I feel like there's more opportunity there, I'm going to burn out. I'm going to feel overwhelmed, because the desire for discovery is not going to go away. It's just going to be kind of stifled, but it's still going to be there, and it's still going to cause me stress."
There is so much depth and insight here, and I really appreciate you putting these words to this. I'm recovering from a long period of homelessness and housing insecurity, and that comes with a lot of hurdles to overcome with regard to mental health and physical/financial security, and it comes with a ton of guilt because I'm trying to build my own content empire/nonprofit career, and every minute I spend on those is essential but also feels like I should be spending my time wage-earning for immediate survival, and every minute I spend doing anything for self-care (like practicing music, or going to the rec center for a better real shower -- it even affects me eating enough because I feel compelled to spend less time and money on eating than is reasonable) is also time that carries guilt because I feel like I should be working on building my career or immediate wage-earning. It's a really intense and tough position to be in, and self-care -- specifically, feeding that desire for discovery, spending time studying for the CLEP tests I need to take if I'll ever be able to get back to school, spending time practicing music so I at least don't lose any more skill than I've already lost -- is one of the first things to fall by the wayside when the guilt and overwhelm take over. But it's so critical to make that time, otherwise I stop functioning at any-of-the-above at all, and I struggle to defend that reality and act on it appropriately.
That got more in-depth than I expected and you'll probably never see it, but thanks for the content you make, because it really affects me deeply. Thanks for creating material that is focused on universal human experiences and never being tone-deaf to the way these things impact poorer classes of people. I really get a lot from your channel and it helps me keep pushing forward through the fire.

I have been reading your blog and watching your videos religiously for a few years now, Thomas. You really got me through university, and I don't say that lightly. This is the most human video I've ever seen you make. It is something I've always felt missing from this medium, something raw that opens a personal side you've at times coveted away and kept private from the public. And understandable so. You obviously recognise that the overwhelming majority of your viewers will empathise, but when your fans look at you like an organised, entrepreneurial, studious beast, source of inspiration and motivation, it's easy to forget that you, like most everyone watching this, suffer from being overwhelmed and risk being taken to dark and upsetting places. A few more videos unpacking this more would be great.

Your plan and routine videos always interest me. I would like to see more videos addressing those of us that can't start our day willy nilly on some random schedule that we set. For instance, I have to leave for work every morning at about 6:30. Everything I add before that moves my alarm back 30 minutes. If I were to do all you do, I would have to get up at 3. Also, evenings are often eaten up with time helping the kids with their homework, cooking dinner, leisure time with the family so they remember me when I'm dead...

My issue is that my routine is constantly sprinting. I need to create healthier habits because I don’t have healthy habits to “re-establish”. I’m just running from one thing to another and it’s exhausting.

Thank you Thomas for sharing that with us ♥

As a man in charge of an organization 450 people strong, I’m constantly in meetings, coordinating and planning. I literally have almost no time to complete my daily tasks, which are VERY critical to my operations and established processes.
I literally work 16 hour days most days and I think it’s killing me.
I feel like I’m drowning and if I stop sprinting, I’ll sink.
Unlike you, I have a boss. And any changes in operations require agreement. That’s where I have not taken action. I’ve been looking to impress when I should have been looking to become healthy. Both as a boss and an individual who needs to survive in this position for the long haul.
This was excellent. You spoke to me in a way other content makers could not. Thank you!

It's sort of that mentality I learned running banquets: Hurry up and wait!
You sprint to get your mis en place ready, you're ready to fire the entrees for 500 people. The event still has 30 minuets before you can start.
So you relax. You recheck your notes. Make sure you have everything in place. Take a breather. Crack some jokes.
Then you plate, you sprint to get the food out as fast as possible then, you can chill a bit

That's really helpful as someone who nearly burnt out relatively recently, but I have to add something I find important: the seeking new knowledge part is an element of what caused my near-burn out (both by overcramming my brain without pause and getting overwhelmed by all the stuff I wanted to learn) so try not to take it too far either!

  • @chelle4419

Thank you soooo much for this video. As soon as I saw the notification pop up, I clicked on it because I was freaking out after a really stressful video. And it is really nice to have someone else say they learn for the sake of that click of understanding. I have been learning Japanese lately and I keep coming back for that reason. Everyone else has these huge goals of being able to speak like a native or live in Japan, but I really am learning it for the sake of it. And my morning routine is definitely a habit that’s fallen to the wayside. I really liked being able to relax before going to class, but I made the mistake of letting myself do homework during that time, and it has crushed my motivation to get up early. I’m going to go back to it.
I hope you have a nice day, and good luck with your own habits. :)

I'll be honest, I haven't watched one of your videos for a few years, since I was in high school and needed study tips. Now I'm back! This time, it's because in the last few months I've taken the leap into entrepreneurship!... and I need help from Thomas Frank again LOL. Your videos are always more helpful than you can know -- one of the biggest takeaways from this one, for me, was the sprinting idea in the beginning. I just got started, and I realized I have mistakenly taken the sprint phase I've been in as my new normal -- which is why I now have procrastination and burnout. But now I know to go between sprinting and slow-and-steady, and I can get back on track!

The joy of discovery is something I thoughts isn't as important. Those toxic inner voices, I didn't consider them toxic. More like thinking realistically. I guess now, those voices really are somewhat toxic.
Right now, I'm focusing on my day-job to earn money for a living and neglecting my other goals in life that has little to no benefit to me to survive.
Recognizing that the joy of discovery is important in my life, I realized some of the little things I do were actually trying to satisfy the need for that joy.
