    Zeus was both Heracles' father, great grandfather, and father in law. Being his father by birth, a decendent of Perseus, and his wife on Olympus being a daughter of Zeus

    One of the myths is that Hera, unknowingly, gave a baby Heracles some of her breast milk which then gave him his super human strength.

      Yeah but she could still mess him up a bit. Zeus is afraid of her. I think all the gods are. She storms and yells at Zeus and makes him miserable for a little while than goes and murders the person he raped and utterly destroys the child's life

    I can't remember which book, but in one of the Percy Jackson stories they make a specific point of that Heracles is actually pretty happy that it was Romanised as Hercules, removing the Hera connection.

      Thalia is greek, and as she was the first child in a while, Hera wasn't quite so pissed. Thalia is named after the muse of comedy, whether her mother intended that I don't know

    As another user said, I've read a version according to which Hera was given the baby to breastfeed it, not knowing who he was, and so he got his name. When she realised who the baby was, she pushed it away and some of the milk spilled onto the sky, creating the Milky Way, or galaxy, from the greek word "gala", meaning "milk".

    Cursed Knowledge: Heracles was born with a twin Iphicles, who then had a son Iolaus.
    Iolaus was a charioteer who became Heracles' protegé AND boyfriend that helped him slay the Lernean Hydra.
    There was also a tale in which Heracles gave away Megara his wife to Iolaus because everytime he looked at her he was haunted by the faces of his two children whom he burned and beat to death in a fit of madness caused by Hera.

    Let's not be too kind with Heracles here, he also accidentally*murdered his teacher in a temper tantrum* as a child in one of his stories.
    Also he waged war on entire kingdoms for petty reasons, so that's cool. He had it rough with Hera but he also killed *a lot* of people for bad reasons.

    I keep seeing comments saying its pronounced hercules or is hercules the same person as heracles. well let me help the people wondering these questions, hercules is the roman/latin way to say and spell his name heracles is the greek way to say his name, and they are not different people they are the same.

    The meaning of Heracles’ name always made me wonder how different his life would’ve been if he had actually served Hera as a means of appeasing her, but tbh it probably just would’ve ended up with him being an antagonist for another demigod.

    I believe it was done for appeasement but received as mockery, it makes Hera's subsequent attacks make more sense. Like no matter what he does, how much he suffers, he still keeps that name so it's never enough for Hera because he's still parading around that name mocking her. Meanwhile there's no way in Hades Herc is changing his name, if this is what she does while he's trying to appease her imagine what she'd do if he discarded her name.

    I did know this, but I was heard the version that he was breastfed by Hera (Hera did not know it was him ofc), and that's why it changed.
