Mossberg 500/590 Magpul Forend Installation: Keep your Heatshield!

- The first step in this custom 500 build is to install a Magpul forend. Now, they no longer advertise this as being 500 compatible, but I'll show you how to tell if it'll work for your gun, and how you can keep your heatshield!
You completely demystified the process. Best instructional I think I've ever seen. One thing I did differently was using a leather/silver workers rawhide mallet to peen over the heat shield. It was fast and really curled over the shield to hug the barrel. Weird I had a leather hammer but not a mousepad...
Hahaha, we all do our best work with what we have on hand!
I just did this to my Mossberg 500 SPX. Mossberg says you cant put a heat shield on that model due to the tall sight on the barrel - but spreading the front of shield apart a little did the trick. Also - my heat shield isnt contoured like that one. It comes down much further around the sides. I left the heat shield on the barrel and covered the teeth on my vice with a cloth, and used the vice to crimp it down. Finished it off with a soft face hammer from Harbor Freight and the Magpul grip slides easily back and forth, just barely touching the shield when the gun is racked all the way back. The SPX model comes from the factory with a pistol grip, ported barrel, ghost ring rear and AR style front sight. Shotgun looks awesome now with FDE Magpul furniture and factory parkerized heat shield. Just added the QD cups in the stock, and a QD front magazine tube cap for a Magpul sling. 7 round Black Velcro mounted elastic side saddle from Esstac on the receiver. Waiting on an Mlok mounted front hand strap made for the Remington tac14 which uses the same Magpul grip, and the 400 lumen Inforce light also in FDE to finish it off.
I like “this” shotgun better without the factory pistol grip and kinda flimsy AR style stock it came with. The Magpul stock is much better. I have a shockwave that i converted over to a pistol grip and arm brace anyway, so its nice having this SPX with a more traditional style stock setup. Don’t wanna sound arrogant, but i gotta say my SPX is pretty friggin sexy looking now. This vid inspired the transformation. Thanks
I think the Anti-Rotation insert went in BACKWARDS! It says flat end towards the forend! Thanks for the heat shield tip!! Worked grea
Thanks for close-ups of work and plain background with good lighting. Very good DIY video.
Thanks. I appreciate your attention to the graphics. Without graphics, these kinds of presentation just do not work. And taking photos of a nonm-reflective black surface is a tedious job. You did well. Thanks. I plan to make the same modification, but I shall take some time sanding down the inside surfaces of the Magpul fore-end, to gain a few extra thousandths of clearance.
Just crimp it bro. Likely too late, this comment was a year ago, but the crimp works great. Vise crimp with a pad to stop marks and rubber mallet the rest evenly. Good luck.
I have found what I believe to be a better way. It involves time and effort, and a little known practice of fitting parts. I (successfully) tested the proof of concept (poorly) with a black one, then found an FDE one online to match my SGA stock. For specificity I have a Mossberg 590, 20" Accu-choked Heavy Walled Barrel, w/bayo lug, Model #51663*
-Take the Magpul pump, lay an MLok rail in the slots on the side.
-Scribe a line on pump where the top of the rail meets it. Do that on both sides so that both sides have a scribed line a few mm from the top about half of the length of the pump.
-Now flip the pump over and run it over 80 grip paper while applying even pressure.
-When you get half a mm above that line, stop.
-Flip it back over, clean it with progressively finer paper (200-400-600-1000) to get rid of the marks and round off the edges.
-Now you have a fitted pump that can still accept MLok rails for stuffsnthings and fits with the heatshield that is still doing its job by being far enough away from the barrel to resist heat transfer.
*That's the closest model to what I have. I have a heavy walled barrel and bayo-lug like a 590A1, but I also have a plastic trigger guard like a 590, BUT also an accu-choke brrl which is only listed on one 590 option and no a1 options. My model no longer appears on the website because I guess we can't have nice things. The perfect pump action offered up by a company with sub-par options.
Is there any way you can show a video or pictures of how you did it step by step? Would help.
Its funny how both Magpul's website and on the box say only for the 590/590A1. However, the instructions inside the box point out which of the two spacers to use for the 500 series. I fitted one recently to an ATP8 500 riot gun from the 1980s - and it fits and works perfectly.
The 500 series has a few lengths of action tubes, which this is only compatible with one. So it makes sense they avoid saying it’s compatible.
Dang I ain't seen one of those bracelets since the early 90s. Great video
cheers to you sir. Easy, straight forward and helped me install my new forend in a matter of minutes. My first shot will be to you Booligan!!
+Chris Thomas glad it came together easily for you!
I swear to God.... I had this exact problem about 3 hrs ago..... didn't look anything up, just switched the heat shield to another 500, and now this pops up in my feed ?!?!?! BIG BROTHER IS OUT THERE....🙄
wow thanks for the video, been wanting to do this but thought it was gonna be a lot more technical, I have the same shotgun and definitely wanna keep my heat shield
Well done. All vids I have seen have you break down the entire action.
Looks awesome with that magpul forend. I hate that corn on the cob handguard. I got a nice hogue one but couldn't install it cuz my maverick has the action slide tube attached to the forend
Easy to follow, straight and to the point. Thanks man
If you have the short slide tube, you can get an extended hogue castle nut to make it work.
That is what I was thinking.....good call
Where can you get that? That is the problem I’m having
Saved my Christmas gift. Thanks man!
Thanks for the great video man. I am about to install the same forend on my 890 Shockwave (thinking about making a video, I'll try to remember to give you a shoutout if so).
Stipple the recessed area of the foregrip.
You'll wonder why it doesn't come that way from the factory!!
Man is it ever grippy and looks awesome!!
ANTI HERO
Of course the magpul one.
If you do the mossy fore grip let us know how it turns out.
Might want to practice on it before you start on the magpul grip.
I practiced on some BB gun parts first.
The materials vary in composition so start in a spot that isn't seen till you get your heat/technique dialed in.
Can you imagine a fully stippled mossy corncob forend? That wouldn't just be grip....that may actually hurt lol
I never would have thought about crimping the heatshield
Very good video, helped me out alot, cost me $0, fixed the problem I was having! 5/5 stars!
With the heat shield it looks like one of those trench shotguns with the regular pump grip
Such a great video. I have the Persuader. Will be buying this
These are great forend hand grips I installed one on my shotgun fix the problem of my sleeve getting jammed in the forend grip while pheasant hunting could not get off a second shot now I can
I had to heat up my Magpul grip with a heat gun and bend it out a bit In order to install the heat shield. Works fine!
You sir are a genius.... Please verify a year later. Are you still good? The forens still rigid and holding up?
Bending the heat shield defeats the purpose of a heat shield.😊
@@Rob_Nasty Thank you sir for the great compliment! It’s still going strong with no problems at all!
@@Paco-hh4jd You the man! I got a 590A1 and you have given me confidence to hear and bend the forend. I was gonna Dremel. But your idea is significantly smarter and easier.
Man ill have to give that a shot with my rem870, putting together a shopping cart for making a duck hunt a home defense and no foregrips seem tk accomodate a heatshield
You can put anything on the short action tube. There is an extension nut you can get for like 15-20 bucks. No need to buy the 7 5/8 slide if you have the shorty.
Great review and I was able to retain my heatshield by crimping slightly in the vise. Perfect fit and function.
Well done on f*cking up your shotgun just to fit a piece of plastic doh
@@disrealnow9664 If his gun is now set up how he wants and works for him, what the fuck do you care.
@@bigrack6668 crimping the heatshield to the barrel destroys the purpose of the heatshield. Might as well remove it.
@@nypigskin No it doesn't, it has raised dimples that continue to stop the heatshield from fully touching the barrel, retains an air gap and stops the shield getting hot. Having done this mod I am 100% sure the heatshield retains it ability to protect the shooter from the hot barrel. As standard the heatshield is very far away from the barrel at the sides and is what I would describe as a poor fit.
Nice little mod. Thanks for the tip.
Great video, even better 90s friendship bracelet bruh
Good tip on the vise. Good man.
Glad I saw this before I tore down the whole gun!
awsome pieces and love the bracelet
I'm highly surprised that you failed to use any oil for the retention nut!
I'm needing a forend for my Mossberg Shockwave.
Maybe a heat gun and flare the top of the foregrip a little?
thanks for the video
lg from Germany
Great video, helps alot before making the forend purchase. Not sure if you would be able to answer or have some insite. Looking to add an aimtech warhammer in replacement of the heatshield. Wondering if it would even be worth trying to see if the M-lok forend would be compatible. Would look sweet if they were. Thanks!
Can't see this working with the 590A1 because of the thicker barrel. Thanks for the informative vid though.
Thanks for the video. On the 590 Shockwave, the new forend does not slide on easily as shown at 5:30. I"m off to watch a Shockwave Magpul forend video.
Yeah, the Magpul forend isn't compatible with the factory Shockwave from what I've seen. This video is only for the standard 500/590 guns. Ultimately, I turned this into a Shockwave build using the kit that came out before Mossberg started selling them as factory guns, and retains the Magpul compatibility.
The Magpul website apparently advises that their 500/590 forend does not fit the Shockwave 590, but the Optics Planet web page (including the reviews) did not mention this important fact. I just left a review to let other Shockwave owners know. I guess I should have done my UA-cam research before getting cut on the new Shockwave bleeding edge. The corn cob forend went back on my Shockwave. I guess I'll use the Magpul forend on my pistol grip 500.
Thanks for the info, I would've broken something otherwise lol.
Thanks for the info man 🫡
So, does the magpul forend work with the shorter 6-5/8ths inch action tubes? I have the shorter one, no one seems to answer this question, I'd rather not have to spend an extra 60$ to get the longer one.
AND…..Talon Gun Grips makes a grip for this slide in rubber or a more aggressive compound. It installs easily and fits perfectly for firmer slip free grip. And it’s only $20.
How difficult was it to bang the forend off ?
Thank you great video
Not hard at all.
The heat shield has that gap because the heat will transfer to the metal shield if it's touching the barrel
And the gap remains. It’s not tight on the barrel, just closer.
Awesome! Thank You...
Very good DIY video. I'm new at this and wonder what level of computer is needed to print out a 3D gun please?
Great vid! I have a very old Mossberg 500 AB that was given to me by my dad and it has NEVER been cleaned. When I removed the forend nut, I see a little ring that appears to be stuck on the tube not allowing me to take off the forend. Is it really stuck or should I use a rubber mallet to remove it? Any advice? Thx!
Will this fit a maverick 88?
Huh. Wonder if this will work with the ACM Mossberg...
You have no idea how long it took me to find a 7 5/8s action slide tube for my mossberg 500. Mine originally came with the gay forend that has no tube. Every single place in existence was sold out or on back order for ever. I was so mad. And one day I happen to go on to optics planet and they actually had them in stock. Only a few but I was able to order one. I haven't gotten it in the mail yet. I still believe it's too good to be true. But hopefully it's it. Every place only has the 20 gauge slide action tube. I guess when magpul came out with this forend everyone and their mother went out and bought the proper slide action tube. I'm shocked mossberg even changed it from a proper tube to a gay forend without it. Damn part is like 20$ and every place has it up for 50$ plus and out of stock and on eBay used ones are $55-$85 and up.
+Bobby G. The nice part is that the tactical persuader models come with the correct one from the factory.
Thank you!
very well done. thankyou
Nice. Plan to do this to my persuader 500a. It should fit right?
Thank you sire
perfect vid! Let me know if you wanted me to send you some free zytel polymer heatshields to try out.
Could that apply to the 870? And does it block the sights?
I have very noticeable cosmetic issues on my mossberg flex 500 wonder if could just install something else I hate warranty processes
It's really easy to install new furniture on Mossberg models.
Great Video..Thank You
1991 called. it wants its friendship bracelet back.
+Joey Burdine 1991 called from its sweet neon phone.
You sound like ian from forgotten weapons
Good info!
i used a castle wrench for an ar to take the nut off. i didnt have a wrench that came with mine.
This makes my racking much harder. Trying to find out why. I've sanded my magpul foreend. Not rubbing anywhere. Works fine till I put barrel on???
The legs on my forend will not detach, i think i will have to purchase a slide action assembly to attach magpul forearm, u have a different model 500 than i do
Unfortunately, my 500 has the forend that won't allow the Magpul .
Crimping the heat shield the way you did just defeats its purpose
Craig Guerrero it still acts as a barrier between your hand and the hot barrel. Yes, it’ll reduce the effectiveness slightly since there’s less air space, but honestly, nobody is getting the barrel hot enough to cause issues on a pump action shotgun like this. It’s mainly cosmetic.
Do you have a video showing how to retain your heat shield. Thanks
My heatshield installation will only work on my specific build, not general Shockwave builds.
Does that castle nut tool come with the foreend or was it a seperate purchase?
Did you find that it eventually wore off the coating on the heatshield? Mine did in a few places and I was surprised that happened.
Is that a factory heatshield? Do you think it would fit a 590 shockwave?
Thanks. I was disappointed when I put my forend on.
Thanks for the video... I have the Mossberg 500 ATI and I just recently installed the same piece.. I'm not sure if I would have to add 1 of those spacers. I also have to do a little crimping on the heat shield because there is a space and the barrel is not sliding all the way down. Both spacers look very similar. Is there any way to tell the difference or is it just by trial-and-error and do I actually have to use a spacer?
Bro did you figure it out, im in the same boat and would appreciate the insight
Crimping the heat shield sucks - I would much rather file down / cut down the Magpul plastic than put elements of my shotgun into a vice - cmon now
And that’s a much more difficult and objectively worse solution. But you do you!
Isn’t the point of the heat shield not touching the barrel to help dissipate heat?
The heatshield already touches the barrel at multiple points.
Question. Online I see a lot of slide action tubes being advertised as 7-3/4" long. Will those work or does it HAVE to be the 7-5/8"?
Great video. This is kind of a random question, but you seem to know your shotguns so I'm hoping you (or anybody reading this) might be able to help me out. I have a rock island armory M5 12 gauge pump (nickel), and absolutely nobody makes any aftermarket furniture for it. Do you have any idea if this would fit my gun? I wouldn't mind doing small modifications to fit if needed. My understanding is my "M5 shotgun" is basically a clone of the "high standard flight-king". I have also heard mossberg come under fire back in the day for basically coping the flight-king to design the model 500. Since both these guns took their inspiration from the same shotgun, I'm hoping they are similar enough that I can steal from the massive pool of aftermarket 500 parts to fit my R.I.A M5. Any help would be appreciated, thanks
From what I've seen online, M500 parts are far enough off that they won't fit without substantial modification. Looks like there's not a lot of aftermarket support for it right now, unfortunately.
So I'm trying to to get a tube slide for the mavrick 88 and I got the wrong size I got 63/4 now which one shud I get then anyboby help me? Or tell me where to find it cheap
rawr7651 7 3/4” or 7 5/8” no 6’s
Mine doesnt fit to my mossberg 590’with factory heatshield.. but when looking at your video yours is also a factory heat shielf
Correct, this is factory but mine is a 500. You might not be able to crimp the 590 heatshield down enough due to the thicker barrel.
So there is no hope to use a magpul forend to mossberg 590 with factory heatshield? Im having problems too
So no to my molded forend that sits on top of receiver?
Couldn't you have just dremeled the inside of the edges on the top of the forend to make it clear the heat shield without bending it? Unfortunately I have the 20 gauge so this forend won't work on mine either way 😞 (although I might try to modify it to fit if I can)
It's infinitely easier to bend the heatshield than to evenly sand/dremel down the inner edge of the heat shield. Sanding plastic like this with a dremel tool is a recipe for wavy bumps.
So you DON'T have to totally disassemble the 500 to do this? Every other video I've seen says you have to - why is that?
No clue. This is a super easy install.
I wonder how that's gonna run when it gets hot
It’ll run exactly the same.
Does this mean to crimp the heat shield you will need a metal one?
Sanitys Void well yeah, you won’t be able to crimp a plastic heatshield .
OK, I'm confused...the stock hand guard on my 500 Persuader is 8 inches long, and your explanation is kind of confusing. Will this hand guard work only within the 6-3/4 to 7-5/8 range of sizes?
+Tom Dietzman the measurement is for the action tube inside your plastic hand guard. Gotta unscrew the front, slide the plastic cover off and measure the metal inner tube. If your plastic cover is pinned in place, you need a new action tube to fit this.
Ok! Thank you very much, for your quick reply! Much appreciated. I will check it out.
Fuck this, I’m getting rid of this heat shield. Nothing but a pain In the ass
Bought one of these for my 500A... everything else has swapped out easy-peasy. Not this though. Too long :(
Yeah, you really have to have the correct action tube in order to install it. Most 500s have the wrong action tube now unless it's a Tactical or Persuader model. That's why Magpul no longer sells this as the "Mossberg 500" model, only the 590 model.
It's all good. I'll put it on my Shockwave. I know that's a 590 :)
You can’t put it on a factory Shockwave either without substantial mods to the fore end. I built this gun into a shockwave which allows me to keep it on, but it requires a ton of work for a factory one.
JEEEE-SUS CHRIST!! Does the Magpul sticker work or do I need a different gun to put THAT on my window too?!? LOL!!!
Depends, are your windows post 1987? You’ll need the gluten free adhesive equipped sticker then. It’s a very complicated thing.
will this work on the 590A1?
Yep, I just did mine. I didnt crimp my heatshield, though.
Well, technically i dont have an A1, i have the plastic trigger guard, but it is the 20" Heavy-walled, bayonet accepting 590.
Do you have to have forend in certain position to remove barrel?
Could you just trim the edges of the new forend without crimping the shield?
You could, but to do it straight and make it look good is substantially harder than 30 seconds with a c clamp.
As far as disassembly/cleaning,
What is different/same with the existing Moss 590 and new 590"M"?
Traveler no clue, never worked on a 590. This is a 500.
Can u add a pistol grip to the new forend?
yes, all MOE M-lok hand guards will accept Magpul M-Lok vertical grips or slide stops.
Will this fit a 590 shockwave with 18.5 barrel?
hey! what heatshield is that? i would like to get the same one been looking all over but this is the only vid i see with the same forend thanks
Nick it’s a factory Mossberg heatshield that came with the gun.
Booligan Airsoft and Shooting Sports ah i got mine for a gunshow so it didnt come with one /:
QUESTION: When you did the Mouse Pad + Vise number on the heat shield, did you remove the heat shield from the barrel, or leave it on ?
I left it on so it would bend properly to the barrel contour.
@@booliganshootingsports Thanks !
What’s the overall length?
Doesn't work...well. Let me explain. I did this using a vice and carefully pinched the heat shield sides all the way down to the barrel. And although it is POSSIBLE to then rack it with the Magpul forend, it is not a smooth action. It gets stiff toward the receiver as the heat shield and barrel widen. If you were ever in a time of panic, and need to get shots off quickly, it would likely increase the chance of short stroking the forend. I ended up removing my heat shield, and will be trying a polymer heatshield that will hopefully fit. Otherwise, I might just be SOL.
Works just fine on my 500 model barrel. You may have a different barrel profile (the 590, for example, is a different barrel profile than my 500) which I can see would make it tighter. A polymer heatshield will always be thicker than steel and less pliable, so I don't believe one would work for you.
@@booliganshootingsports It's a 500A that came exactly as yours in the video. I can't imagine the barrels being different. I had it all the way down to the sides of the barrel, but it still rubbed. I really wanted it to work, and even destroyed the brass bead removing it to remove the heat shield. We'll see if the polymer one works...it doesn't come down as far on the sides.
I recently purchased a Maverick 88. Build date is of this year. My forehand pull Does have a Pin. As I understood you in the video. I CanNot install this Magpul due to Pin in Forehand Grip.. Correct?
Buy a mossberg 500 7 3/4 slide action tube and replace the whole deal. That'll take care of it.
Mr Anachronism ~ This is what I did. I ordered the action slides from the Mossberg 500. Then I ordered the Magpul for hand grip I wanted. And installed. Good to go other than excessive amounts of money in to some thing such as the Maverick. I’m happy. I believe that’s all that matters. Thanks again for chiming in
@@CloserLookAutomotive I did the same thing. Plus a hogue tamer pistol grip.
What sucks is the amount of video’s that exist in regards to the Maverick and changing the forehand grip. Let me simplify it for those that are confused as I was.
First. Check to see if the Action Tube Rails on your Maverick are Built/Molded Into your current ForeHand Grip.
***If The Action Rails ARE built into your Forehand Grip, you’ll need Two Items.
1.) Mossburg 500 Action Tube Rails in 7 3/4
2.) ForeHand Grip of your Choice.
It’s that simple. I hope somebody makes a video that is more streamlined and easier for people to understand regarding this specific weapon. Obviously there’s a different generations of the Maverick and or different configurations due to existing parts within the factory. So identifying what you have is the very first step. I’m happy to help since I have now completed it if anyone is unsure or still confused.
Hey, I just get a mossberg 500 tactical, it has a heat shield and muzzle brake... the forend is almost 8 inches, would magpul forend fit on my mossberg?
Panthers Fan you’d have to measure the actual action tube.
Is there any way I can get a Magpul M-LOK forend to be compatible with the RIA Armscor M5?
