Sounds good.I have a Ford F-250 and thought about a Detroit change. The problem with current diesel pickups is reliability of the electronic sensors and components. I had to be towed 3 time in 2 months. I have 2 Detroit 671s from the late 1940s still going strong in my boat. I ran twin 6v53s in the Navy in Vietnam patrol boats. Good engine.
Yes, I am running into the same dilemma. I want a diesel truck but I want it with mechanical fuel injectors and injector pump. I would like to have a 4-53T Detroit in a pickup or a mini semi like in this video.

My dad had one of those engines in an old Chevy dump truck. It would run 50mph down hill loaded if you were lucky and it sounded like it was going 100mph. Neat old truck you got there.
This truck could tear the ass out of the earth if it had the traction. Hp is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you move it. Beautiful truck and great work. Bless.
For those that keep asking, yes it's a 2 stroke. This engine is not about horsepower, it's about torque, and that's all that matters here. He could get a ton more torque out of it, if he wanted. A 4-53 can make 900 ft-lb with twin turbos and a blower (they all got blowers). This is bad ass, if all you can think about is the HP of a snowmobile engine, you've missed the point. HP is a function of RPM, which this engine isn't designed to spin like that; 3000 RPM is pushing the envelope.
Yes 900 ft-lbs out of 212 cubic inches! Even 2 stroke mountain sled make good torque for their size and 4 joke cant keep up unless revving really high!
That's a sharp truck, I'm working on getting an aluminum block 3-53 running to put in a Blazer. I'm hoping to put a turbo on it and get up around 140Hp... unfortuantely that's going to require alot of work to get there (machining the head, cam and valve swap and an overhaul)!
Mercury pushes way more power than 6v53 and can go to 800hp with turbo and tuned pipe with much less weight. The motoer is 190 CID 3.2 L from dave bush racing. I assume tune pipes and turbo should tale a 318 CID 2 stroke to well over 460HP. Mercury, Evinrude and Rotax make much more power per CID than a 6v53 stock.
Why only 185hp from a 318CID 2 stroke, a new rotax 850 has 165hp which is over 3hp per CID, rotax has much more power for its size. Hell a mercury 3.2 liter v6 2 stroke outboard engine will over 330hp witch i would rather have in my truck than this thing. A 6v53 is like a 1970 sled JLO engine in a boxy Arcrtic Cat.
A DDEC 6v53 should make around 335 HP without breaking a sweat the military DDEC 6v53 makes 400Hp and you can make just about as much Hp as you want with larger turbos and more fuel... but with decreased longevity as a side effect the problem here is that we are dealing with 30+ year old mechanical injection and cam systems. It is also worth noting that even with all the mechanical injection drawbacks you can still slap 140 series injectors into a 53 series and make probably 700-1000HP out of a 6v53 with a tuned valve setup and solid trunk style pistons... at least that's what I hear. Now how long that would hold together I have no idea... and probably once you push above 500Hp you'll start finding weak points as the engine just wasn't designed for it but that is the case when hopping anything up ;-)
OMG!! Memories of riding in the old 1959 Seagrave K-series pump with its 6V-53. All you need is a siren and air horns!!! Was originally a V-12 gas, repowered in 1983.

I love it. Nice work. Question, I have heard that leaving your hand on the stick shift is bad for the trans as it inevitably puts pressure on the shifting forks. The stick should be allowed to "ride" where it wants and this will minimize wear. Any truth to that? And, must you use the clutch once rolling? Can you 'float' shift? I used to do it in my VW Bus.
